Maybe the lighter part is his teeth showing.

Didn't help that some of the official art for Pokemon depicted Metapod as the angry eyes with a pointy nose version:Also, the Gen 1 and 2 sprites for Metapod always threw me off. It only became clear later on when they changed position on the sprite.
How did folks not see the Black Omen as a Star Destroyer?

Yes! Tho I thought all peons had actually lost their right eye for some reason. I always found the beak peons to be kinda cool. Then my brother pointed out the truth and, well... peons are kinda lame now.The peon portrait in Warcraft 2 threw me off for years. Probably due to his right eye just barely being visible so I hardly even noticed it.
His left ear looked like his left eye and that he was winking or something. The left cheek was some kind of beak and the tusk his smiling mouth.
And this one was way cooler when I thought the octopus nose was actually it's mouth.

Because storywise it's an evolution of the Ocean Palace, which was not a Star Destroyer, and because it desintegrates like this:
Game grumps recently ruined this for me. Arin mentioned the sideburn looking like one eye (both eyes showing with a weird side mouth) and I can't help but think of that now.well....
Yeah, plus the way it hovers is more like a giant vertical structure would, rising and sagging and such. Horizontal ships in video games tend to be mostly still.
I'm not sold on the star destroyer thing unless there's official art.
THANK YOU!
I'm glad someone else saw this because for the longest time while playing it drove me nuts! For those who can't see it, I made a quick GIF to highlight both ways this is seen.
Well, the dungeon design actually has you mostly going north in long (but large) corridors, with only two or three elevators going up. If it were a pyramid you'd think there'd be more elevators. Moreover the top of the Black Omen is this:
This is definitely more consistent with a Star Destroyer type shape, despite the messed up perspective on the world map.
This still doesn't explain what you thought the entire rest of the face was. If somebody could draw it the incorrect way of seeing it, it would be much appreciated.

I'm pretty sure he's supposed to be viewed in two different ways. It would make sense for him to appear like a big angry thing considering he's a cocoon which would be vulnerable.
Eh...I like it better as a tower, so that's where I'll keep it.

But when it is below the sea you can see the shadow, it's not like a pyramid would project the same kind of shadow if it's in a vertical position under the sea.Agahnim is a pretty awfully-made sprite, but I think this is the worst. I refuse to believe ANYONE thought that thing was a Star Destroyer when they were playing the game back in the mid-90's.

Also the two engines give it away.
BTW I understand the sprite is too busy compared to other overworld structures, that might be one reason.

These guys
Their sprite in the game looked like they had only one big eye with narrow, snake-like pupil.
I didn't realised they had two eyes till I got Hyrule Historia last year.
Because it just sits there all pyramid/oblisk like. If they'd had the thing move around or sit at a horizontal layout, it might have been easier to tell what it was.
How were we supposed to see that exactly?
Because the perspective is all fucked up.
Because storywise it's an evolution of the Ocean Palace, which was not a Star Destroyer, and because it desintegrates like this:
its just one big giant blob. the shadow could be coming from about 45 degrees in front of and above, casting a long shadow of a vertical object.
in short , its a big mess so interpretation is open.

Not to mention the shadow beeing cast shows a horizontal design rather than a vertical one.

Tunnel vision man. I remember looking at the other tusk and scratching my head what it was, not noticing the teeth or other eye. That couldn't be the teeth because peons have beaks, obviously!Nobody is explaining what they thought the right side of the Warcraft sprite was intended to be. They just keep explaining how they saw the left side of the sprite as the face. But what about the other 60% of the sprite? What did you think the rest of it was? The actual mouth with the teeth, the second tusk, the other eye. You're ignoring almost the entire image in favor of a small portion.
What they said.
Agahnim is a pretty awfully-made sprite, but I think this is the worst. I refuse to believe ANYONE thought that thing was a Star Destroyer when they were playing the game back in the mid-90's.
Now that's reaching.

I mean... who didn't, man? Starman was pure, unfiltered, guaranteed awesomeness. Hot damn, I miss this game. I may end up buying an NES again just for this game. Great times.
I always saw it as green hair, not a cap. The "nose" people are seeing looked (and still kinda looks) like a mouth. The Agahnim one is hilarious to me because the wrong interpretation looks exactly like Andy Capp.

Man, so many of you didn't seem to understand how shadows work if that thing looked like a tower to you...
