Sprites that look like things they're not supposed to

The Agahnim one is hilarious to me because the wrong interpretation looks exactly like Andy Capp.

Maturity, bitches.
Also, the Gen 1 and 2 sprites for Metapod always threw me off. It only became clear later on when they changed position on the sprite.
Didn't help that some of the official art for Pokemon depicted Metapod as the angry eyes with a pointy nose version:

Honestly, when I realized what Agahnim really looked like, I wasn't really a fan. I enjoyed Agahnim a lot due in part to him looking like a more normal guy - an older wizard character as opposed to some evil wizard.

I'm pretty sure he's supposed to be viewed in two different ways. It would make sense for him to appear like a big angry thing considering he's a cocoon which would be vulnerable.

For some reason, I only properly saw the Mario Crouching Sprite for what it was meant to be, after playing Super Mario Bros. 3 this past Christmas season..

Might be because I'm now playing on a trinitron, which is quite a bit clearer than any other CRT I've ever used.

Anyway, I realized that the red part of the sprite in the bottom half was the arm, and it was covering the black, which would be the pants and the rest of the body.. I used to see the wrist as basically the bending knee.

I always just imagined Mario wedged into a tiny ball, and.. well I never questioned why the pants would suddenly become red when crouching.

Even as a kid I never liked Link to the Past's graphics. Especially when comparing it to the hand drawn Zelda art of Nintendo Power or the instruction booklet. Looking back on it now the sprite work really was crap. Everything has this round chunky look.

The peon portrait in Warcraft 2 threw me off for years. Probably due to his right eye just barely being visible so I hardly even noticed it.

peonkyuua.png

His left ear looked like his left eye and that he was winking or something. The left cheek was some kind of beak and the tusk his smiling mouth.
Yes! Tho I thought all peons had actually lost their right eye for some reason. I always found the beak peons to be kinda cool. Then my brother pointed out the truth and, well... peons are kinda lame now.
And this one was way cooler when I thought the octopus nose was actually it's mouth.

Because storywise it's an evolution of the Ocean Palace, which was not a Star Destroyer, and because it desintegrates like this:

okA1JQk.png

Yeah, plus the way it hovers is more like a giant vertical structure would, rising and sagging and such. Horizontal ships in video games tend to be mostly still.

I'm not sold on the star destroyer thing unless there's official art.

Well, the dungeon design actually has you mostly going north in long (but large) corridors, with only two or three elevators going up. If it were a pyramid you'd think there'd be more elevators. Moreover the top of the Black Omen is this:

This is definitely more consistent with a Star Destroyer type shape, despite the messed up perspective on the world map.

THANK YOU!

I'm glad someone else saw this because for the longest time while playing it drove me nuts! For those who can't see it, I made a quick GIF to highlight both ways this is seen.

vPEf6XF.gif

This still doesn't explain what you thought the entire rest of the face was. If somebody could draw it the incorrect way of seeing it, it would be much appreciated.

Not to mention the shadow beeing cast shows a horizontal design rather than a vertical one.

Nobody is explaining what they thought the right side of the Warcraft sprite was intended to be. They just keep explaining how they saw the left side of the sprite as the face. But what about the other 60% of the sprite? What did you think the rest of it was? The actual mouth with the teeth, the second tusk, the other eye. You're ignoring almost the entire image in favor of a small portion.

What they said.

Eh...I like it better as a tower, so that's where I'll keep it.

If there is truth to this, I don't think it's meant to be shown to the extent seen in that picture. In the more recent generations, his eyes can still be seen from the back sprite, but they are clearly on the side of his body and not the middle of the back like that picture shows.

I've just checked the Japanese script. The Black Omen actually is literally called a ship once by Queen Zeal:

Translation said:
Queen: I can't draw out my power here......

I've come up with a good idea.
I'll take and stick you vermin into the Demonic
Vessel. I hope you're thankful......

To be able to become a part of this ship!
To be able to become a part of me!!
To be able become a part of Lavos-sama!!!

Agahnim is a pretty awfully-made sprite, but I think this is the worst. I refuse to believe ANYONE thought that thing was a Star Destroyer when they were playing the game back in the mid-90's.
But when it is below the sea you can see the shadow, it's not like a pyramid would project the same kind of shadow if it's in a vertical position under the sea. :(
Also the two engines give it away.

BTW I understand the sprite is too busy compared to other overworld structures, that might be one reason.

And the fact that the game implies it's the Ocean Palace, just floating in the air. At no point it's made to look like an airship, really. Honestly, I don't see the shadow making it clear, or the engine. Back on my 14" TV playing through RF cables those "engines" could be anything at all. It just looks like a tower. Just bad sprite design. If they want to make it clear it was a spaceship they should have had placed it horizontally.

How did folks not see the Black Omen as a Star Destroyer?

its just one big giant blob. the shadow could be coming from about 45 degrees in front of and above, casting a long shadow of a vertical object.

in short , its a big mess so interpretation is open.

These guys

Their sprite in the game looked like they had only one big eye with narrow, snake-like pupil.

Subrosian_Green.png

I didn't realised they had two eyes till I got Hyrule Historia last year.

Nah, those are butt faces:

Because it just sits there all pyramid/oblisk like. If they'd had the thing move around or sit at a horizontal layout, it might have been easier to tell what it was.

How were we supposed to see that exactly?

Because the perspective is all fucked up.

Because storywise it's an evolution of the Ocean Palace, which was not a Star Destroyer, and because it desintegrates like this:

Not to mention the shadow beeing cast shows a horizontal design rather than a vertical one.

In addition, the bridge area is drawn on a layer above the main body and casts a shadow onto the areas of the body just below it. The two bottom parts look like engines too. Having a vertical tower with a weird side protrusion on one side is kind of strange as well.

I totally did. I can't even recall if I'd seen a Star Destroyer yet but I definitely thought of it as something closer to that than a giant floating pyramid thing. Probably the shadows.

Tunnel vision man. I remember looking at the other tusk and scratching my head what it was, not noticing the teeth or other eye. That couldn't be the teeth because peons have beaks, obviously!

Why yes I did feel like the biggest dumbass when it was finally pointed out to me.

It never occurred to me until this thread to look at it any other way than a Star Destroyer type object. It has a shadow on the ground that clearly indicates it's horizontal, not vertical.

I mean... who didn't, man? Starman was pure, unfiltered, guaranteed awesomeness. Hot damn, I miss this game. I may end up buying an NES again just for this game. Great times.

I always saw it as green hair, not a cap. The "nose" people are seeing looked (and still kinda looks) like a mouth.

Man, so many of you didn't seem to understand how shadows work if that thing looked like a tower to you...

Could easily be a shadow like that thrown from a tall object, doesn't show where the lights coming from it could be coming at a 45 degree angle, like a long shadow off a mountain or tree. I think you are the one seeing only 2d shadows as if light can only come from one direction
