Fuck :( Hopefully the vast majority (if not all) of his memory comes back.

Safe to assume he won't make it to Melbourne then? :( I'll have to buy some Alonso/McL-H merch in support.

Assume? It's already confirmed he'll miss first race.

I'm extremely skeptical unless it's reported by someone major.

That quote attributed to him sounds like exactly the sort of thing someone would make up to try and shock people.

It's never going to be confirmed / denied officially, it'll be rumours like this one that leak out, not saying this is legit, but in F1 generally if there's smoke, there's fire.

What are the chances of this affecting his driving if any? Him turning into a post crash Massa would really gut me.

I really want solid reports on this from outlets with a good track record. This would be really devastating, if any of it is true.

I know there were reports earlier, that Alonso thought he was still driving for Ferrari, so maybe it's been exaggerated from that.

Massa's accident was way worse. The only thing that could hamper his driving is the fear of crashing again, but his accident in 2003 was much bigger.

Massa wasn't a terribly great talent even before his accident, so I doubt that would be much of a problem.

I doubt we'll hear Alonso on the board radio complaining to Charlie about a bit of rain and how the race should be red flagged anytime soon, at any rate.

Is it really possible to not remember the last 20 years after a concussion? I always though it's either that you don't remember what happened at the time of the accident or that you couldn't create new memories but I don't think I've ever heard of a story like this.

Not only possible, fairly common. Most people only lose a few days though. Most people tend to permanently forget up to a day before and including the accident, that's true, but temporary memory loss is pretty common in concussions, yes.

20 years is extreme, mind you, but it happens.

Interesting -- and scary. Thanks!

Why Magnussen?

Surely Barrichello is available?
Nah, this was from earlier in the thread re: another seat:

"The identity of the team's second driver, who will race alongside Will Stevens, has not yet been confirmed."

Barrichello will buy a seat and make the comeback he wanted for so long...
I highly doubt. He signed a contract with Renault for a seat in the Copa Petrobras de Marcas, and also has a contract to race on StockCar, in which he is the current champion.

For a week or so we were being told by "sources" that it was electric shock, that he was ill and that he blacked out before the crash. In f1 where there is smoke there is smoke.

Oh my, Van der Garde is suing Sauber in Australia for "his" drivers seat!

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/m...de-demands-start/story-fnibbz73-1227249857089

NEXT week's Australian Formula One Grand Prix has already hit a roadblock with a dumped driver taking his team to court to demand a spot on the starting grid.

Dutch F1 driver Giedo van der Garde has launched urgent legal action at Victorian Supreme Court claiming he has been unfairly dismissed by the Sauber racing team.

Mr van der Garde wants the court to force Sauber to give one of it's two starting drives in the upcoming grand prix at Albert Park.

Mr van der Garde, 29, is a journeyman driver who joined Sauber last year as a test driver after racing for Caterham F1 team in 2013.

In documents lodged yesterday, Mr van der Garde claims he was guaranteed a spot on this year's Sauber team on June 28, 2014, but team bosses reneged on the deal just months ago.

"In early November 20l4, Mr van de Garde was informed by Sauber's Chief Executive Officer, Ms Monisha Kaltenborn, that Sauber's two seats had been given to other drivers and that, as a consequence, Mr van der Garde would not have a place as a driver in the team in 2015," the documents claim. Mr van der Garde originally took his case to the Arbitration Institution in Switzerland, which ordered Sauber keep him on the team.

"The Respondent was ordered to refrain from taking any action the effect of which would be to deprive Mr van der Garde of his entitlement to participate in the 2015 Formula One Season as one of Sauber's two nominated race drivers," court documents claim. But Sauber's website produced ahead next week's race lists three other drivers — Marcus Ericsson, Felipe Nasr and Raffaele Marciello — as the team's preferred starters.

Lawyer Matthew Spain, for Mr van der Garde, said in court documents that the website records "nil response" when his name is entered in to its search.

Mr van der Garde is seeking an urgent hearing on Monday — just three days before the race — and wants the court to enforce the Swiss agreement and guarantee him a spot on the Sauber team.

This is crazy....I mean I don't know if they really fucked him over or not, but trying to get a court order to force yourself into a racecar seat is beyond stupid. But I guess they don't have any money he could sue for....

Suing a team to get a seat...

The mood in the team will be great if he wins.

Doubt it's about the seat and more about the money and the principle of him being convinced he had a seat for this year and not even trying to get a seat elsewhere. Lets be honest here, we'd all do the same, because fuck Sauber for screwing him and Sutil over like that.

Sauber are just gonna say they didn't have a choice and were going to run out of business if they didn't grab drivers with bigger sponsorship, I'm sure that's the reason why they went with new drivers instead of Van Der Garde.

If the documents are correct, he did get screwed though and you can't blame him for trying to get what he signed for.

Yeah.

I am pretty sure he signed a deal in 2014 which made him test driver for 2014, but guaranteed him a raceseat in 2015.

It was a business decision for Sauber to drop him. They'll make it work if they have to.

Yup. He's also not the first to sue and I doubt he'll be the last

He was also 12 years younger. With age comes more responsibility and appreciation for life. He has more to lose now

The season hasnt even started and F1 is crashing all over the place. Financial woes, lawyers, is he / is he not ok Alonso, Mclaren be lucky to finish and race.

The only comforting consistency right now is that Maldonado still cant get a car round the track without smashing it.

I think Massa's post accident problem was coming back to Ferrari to find himself the #2 driver, not the accident.

Hey, they're saying it wasn't his fault! Even that is being taken from us.

That's championship contender Maldonado to you.
