First reviews for Neil Blomkamp's Chappie

Any interest I had in this died when Toonami showed a special sneak peek of the film in what I believe was supposed to be a comedy scene, only I didn't laugh once and almost muted my tv by the end. Its too bad I like that some people still want to take risk and make r rated sci fi action films, but they need to be good as well :/

Looked like Short Circuit / Number 5 lives from the get go, but without its charm or novelty. Also, action focus? Urgh.

Yeah I'm still going to watch it, but I have way lowered expectations now. It should be worth watching for Die Antwoord, production design, and the action set pieces. Even if it's shit, it won't be a complete waste of time.

Could someone explain to me the appeal of Die Antwoord being in it? Or just explain Die Antwoord in general?

Can't say I'm surprised. Really, when you look at it, District 9 is a pretty shitty movie too. In my book, this guy is 0 for 3.

Dunno. I do know that the song 'Baby's on fire' has a relevant line in it. 'Neil Blomkamp is gonna make me a movie star.'

And that was long before Chappie.

Die Antwoord are beyond explaining though. They are just the answer.

They're satire, first album was quite good actually.

Once popularity hit though they kept pushing things further and further to the point they've become a parody of a parody and it's all very hit/miss.

Cant' say I'm surprised. This was never going to be a movie with mass appeal, set in South Africa and starring Die Antwoord. I think it may also be a generational thing. Some of the older reviewers just might not get it at all.

But then I doubt this has a really solid script. Hopefully this prompts Blomkamp to start working with proper scriptwriters going forward. I really like his visuals, even in Elysium I absolutely loved the grungy 80s action movie vibe, so I'd like to see him get a better grasp of his strengths and weaknesses.

Die Antwoord are certainly out there, but they are entertaining I will give them that.

And if Ninja really does direct alot of those videos, he isn't half bad at it.

At least M Night gave us two good movies.

Four

Village
Signs
Unbreakable
Sixth Sense

Damn shame. I'll watch it when it's a buck somewhere..

This guy is a walking PR Machine. Everything that comes out of his mouth is a load of crap. He hasn't made a good film since District 9 and the fact that he has now signed on to make a new Alien is something that hurts inside.

I bet after his artwork for the new Alien a lot of people were looking out for it. With another shitty movie (Chappie) coming our way, we can only hope FOX does the right thing and let Ridley Scott choose a director for the new Alien. This guy is going to shit all over it.

Ridley Scotts judgment ain't exactly worth much these days.

Some people just really love stupid-looking haircuts.

I'm really bummed about the movie, though I'm not surprised it's doing so badly. Elysium was mediocre, and putting non-actors in your film is rarely a good idea.

Still, District 9 was so good that I might still see this.

Fuck everything, I will still watch any film that has Sharlto Copley in it. Especially when he plays a villain because he's like a live action Yosemite Sam.

He may not be the best actor, but he's certainly the MOST actor.

His (current) work is still a lot better then what Blomkamp "produces". Thanks to Ridley Scott we even have an Alien and Blade Runner franchise to begin with. Prometheus was a return to form (directing-wise). You can shoot me now.

What would you expect from a retcon with fanservice in it? Having Weaver and Bien in it is just all sorts of warning signs of creative bankruptcy.

I take no pleasure in seeing these poor reviews

I really do love Blomkamp. He might need to start subbing out his weaker creative tasks to more talented people

Its bumming me out how much hate he is getting in this thread

Yeah I don't think I've ever rooted harder for a movie's RT score. People take this shit personal or something. 54% isn't even that bad

I'm glad I don't base my entertainment around reviews and other peoples opinions most of the time, I wouldn't enjoy damn near anything...

That said I'm stoked, Elysium isn't nearly as bad as people make it to be, and the bad parts were due to studio fuckery, Prometheus also is not bad, but GAF hyperbole and all that nonsense...

Someone please tell me the partial nudity is Yolandi and not Ninja or Jackmans arse or something...

This thread has only convinced me to give Elysium a watch just to witness his issues firsthand.

Or you know, just have his wife write his scripts.

Shit all over what, a franchise that hasn't had a legitimate good film in almost 30 years? It might as well be Blomkamp, because what difference does it make?

You know... I re-watched District 9 the other day and... It's not as good as I remember. Maybe he's been making mediocre movies all along.

District 9 is pretty overrated IMO. Its not a bad film by any means but I think that since it came from an relatively unknown director and wasnt total shit, that it kinda caught people off guard.

I will not accept the retconning in this thread from the posters who claim the Halo shorts weren't good.

Best thing to come out of that franchise in terms of live action, MS' web series was terrible.

The fact that Weaver and Biehn are in it doesn't make it a good movie. Biehn hasn't done anything remotely interesting since Aliens and a few other things.
