Valkyria Chronicles PC |OT| May the bloodline live forever

;_;

Surely localizers have official tools.

It can vary wildly from project to project.

However, yes, as soon as anyone begins working on a game like this themselves even from a hobbyist perspective, they immediately appreciate what goes into translating these sorts of games.

Now you can perhaps even understand why tone can seem "off" in some cases (although that also simply comes down to the personal interpretation of the translator and/or editor).

This is not the easiest job in the world!

This game is *so damn good*, but the story can be quite dumb sometimes.
My suspension of disbelief gets weaker and weaker.
Oh well, typical japanese narration, I was aware of that before starting to play.
Still, we're having a blast, it's graphically beautiful, the musics are wonderful, I love how the headquarters and book works and they way they tell the story with it, the characters are likable (even if they are a little monodimensional), the actual tactical play is fantastic (with a few downsides, like that the enemies' cover fire seems to be way stronger than yours) and the mission design is simply amazing. Wish I could save during the missions though; sometimes we think of tactics that may be fun to try but I do not want to restart an hour long mission (no, I won't dumb it down to scout rushes) due to making a mistake.
Hope they'll bring more of these on PC.

Started this before cny and can't wait to get back. I downsample using gedosato from the default second highest with steady 60fps.

I got to the part where you can select troops and stuff. Resources are farmable? As in you can grind? Or got to be picky?

So far I had trouble on the mission (tutorial one) where you wait for your tank to come..enemies cover fire is kinda op..till I stumbled upon being able to go prone in tall grass. Never used a grenade because it proved worthless in it not that healing item because of said coverfire.

Never told me you can go prone in tall grass. Also found out later you can go up the tower from a friend.

Think I did that mission ten times...haha.

You can save in the middle of a battle if you mean when your doing combat and such anytime you want. You can access the menu on the overview screen.

Indeed. However I am fairly certain that the translators/localizers in this game had access to a tool, because it would take way too long to do otherwise (Feunoir agrees as well given the way it's structured). Also, the subtitle timing is sometimes off from when the Japanese narrator is speaking, meaning that the subtitles were timed by the localizers themselves which would be hugely agonizing to do without a tool (This is my current roadblock).

I sent a private message to the French TL to see if he can reveal more of his secrets. Given that he has actual programming skill I hope he can shed some light for me or maybe he'll just ignore me lol.

Anyone know anything about replacing the ingame videos? I've been working on a little MLG themed texture pack for VC, and I'm thinking of capping it off by replacing the Sega logo at startup with something like this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWjVWdL360s) and an MLG-ified version of the opening video.

And hell, once editing the text is figured out, maybe change the story into an epic match between OpTic and FaZe or something.

While I sit and wait for a response from Feunoir about his "hacking" if anyone knows anyone else with skill in this sort of field (HEX editing and address scanning) that's willing to help that would be excellent. In the meantime I'll just read up some programming tutorials and begin wrapping up translation work for the Prologue. Since this is just a long-term fun enthusiast project with no deadline I'm not feeling pressure.

It's pretty funny how rewritten Prologue 1-2 is. Welkin in JP is a bit more level headed and does not talk to fish like they are people. Alicia is rewritten to sound like a cop (with some heavy sarcasm thrown in) in the beginning rather than military which I think is a bit of a disservice to the theme of the game, especially since in JPN she is called "Captain Alicia" by the town watch which is cool. In my TL I think calling her "Captain" will work.

Prologue 1-4 Battle Briefing:
Welkin (ENG, JPN): I see three of them.
Alicia (JPN): Don't lower your guard until they're all downed!
vs.
Alicia (ENG): That's three too many. Stay sharp!

Now that's a harmless little exchange of little consequence (and there's definitely room in the game for funny or snippy exchanges to be added in for characterization during a localization process) but now you can begin to imagine what happens when story elements start coming into the picture....

I wouldn't be surprised if Welkin's dialogue in the prologue got rewritten in the localization to make his character more consistent. I can see some dub script editor reading Welkin's stuff, nodding, then he gets to the scene where Welkin hands Alicia goat dung, then squinting and flipping back to the prologue, going "What the fuck is going on here?"

The Alicia stuff is probably there to showcase the difference between the militia's attitude and the actual army's attitude.

I see where you are coming from. Though the scene with Welkin handling animal dung and giving it to Alicia is not the only weirdly out of place scene in the game, lol... I think aiming for consistency in character/behavior by manipulating the script was a futile exercise in the end.

It's pretty funny reading the official art book for the game and seeing the developers apologize for including
the swimsuit scene
lol

My game keeps crashing after completing the veggie mission (score shows, I hit spacebar, and then it crashes). Basically I saved right before it and am trying different things to get it to go through without just picking a different mission entirely =/. Any thoughts?

Edit: I went through a steam update, restarted my machine, and waited a lot after completing the mission, and it seemed to get through this time? No idea what was wrong honestly.

By the way, anyone feel this is the time to reorganize the campaign for VC3 localization? Unlike the old Gallian Liberation Front campaign, we actually have good news to work off of instead of the massive flop of VC2 which led to the news of Sega officially withdrawing PSP support in the west.

There were some memory allocation issues in the first version of the game on Steam that could cause crashing at some points. I assume you have the game set to auto-update?

When I first played through the first version of the game it crashed in two places pre-patch:
1) After coming back from HQ in Chapter 3. Commonly known as book mode crash. This really annoyed me and I was also really surprised that it wasn't caught in pre-release testing.
2) Naggiar Plains trench warfare, I tried to look up a unit's potential mid-battle and I think I hit a combination of keys too fast. It brought up a blank page for Alicia (not the unit I selected) and then immediately crashed afterwards. Luckily this was near the beginning of the mission. Have no idea what I did to trigger it.

However since then I've logged a total of 100 hours in the game and have had no crashes or glitches of any kind. 60fps too. Though I did notice a few little *bugs* that don't hamper my ability to play the game but are noticeable. For instance, on Chapter 14 map (also the Lancer Challenge map) there is a trench in the Northeast corner of the map that has a mysterious invisible wall that blocks you from exiting the trench north. There's a similar invisible wall when climbing the
Marmorta's broken scaffold
in chapter 18a. Both can be dealt with and I never did set my game to 30fps so I have no idea if that fixes the problem.

I think personally we've done all we could to encourage a continuation of development on the series whether localization or re-releases. For all those who bought the game for their friends on Steam I salute you as I think only raw sale numbers will give SEGA the evidence it needs to act at this point in regards to the VC franchise.

I just occasionally seem to have crashes right after I finish a mission and see the score screen. It really sucks too because if it just got to the book 2 seconds later I would obviously save right then and there. I was able to get past the veggie mission crash eventually by playing around with the menus or something before proceeding, but then afterwards, I finished the next mission and had it crash on me again. This happened once before (when I think my laptop was running really hot), but it was perfectly fine in these more frequent cases through about 7 chapters... it's really really annoying too because I lose so much of my playtime T_T.

I have the game set to 720p 30fps, and the game runs very well while playing. According to Steam I do have auto-update on, and I honestly downloaded the game like a couple weeks back or so, so I'd kind of assume I have the latest release. I guess I just have to remember to save right before finishing a mission...

Operation 422, a renewed campaign to bring Valkyria Chronicles 3 to the west, is live!

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=154041464

I'd recommend all of you show your support now that Valkyria Chronicles' PC success has paved the way for the series' future in the west.
Will do my deed tomorrow.

Honestly don't know what this means. VC on PC is the first one right?
Yes, it is. But asking for VC3 makes in so far sense that it is set parallel to VC1 opposed to VC2 that is a sequel. Also a lot of people didn't like the school setting and the characters that came with it

How about we ask for it all....
There never was a version of VC3 that's in English, apart from an incomplete and rough fan translation.

I'd be happy with just getting a port of VC3:E2 for PSP on PSN sometime. The localization makes all the difference.

EDIT: After speaking with CertifiedFP in the petition thread, it seems a PC, PS4 or Vita port/remaster would be somewhat more likely. Either way, VC3 deserves more love than it got. From the looks of things, it was a fine farewell to the series.

This game is hard.

Oh boy, wait until you see Valkyria Chronicles 3 then, it makes this game look like child's play with its difficulty curve.

And then there's the endgame quests that are comparable to Fire Emblem's Lunatic+ mode.

That said, in terms of design as an *RPG*, I say the third game is the best. The most customization of indivdual loadouts, a skill-tree for characters, and stats matter - big time

So I posted in the "Steam sales data thread" as well, but it's pertinent to this thread, too.

According to Ars Technica's extrapolated data, which has by and large proven to be quite accurate to date (no more than 10% variance either way), Valkyria Chronicles has done somewhere around 210,000 units to date.

This tracks with some of the data we had earlier in the thread (and is in the "really optimistic" range for forecasts), and given some of the data we had earlier, it's relatively safe to assume that at least half of those copies were near-launch copies, so they were all sold for ~$18. Many of the rest would've been the Christmas sale and whatnot, which never went below $10, IIRC.

So from this: a bit of napkin math tells us that even after Steam's cut and likely taxes, Valkyria Chronicles has made enough money to cover the likely contract fee for Little Stone (probably somewhere between $100k to $300k, depending on terms and how long the port took), has made enough for Sega to drop the necessary million dollars or so on an HD-PC version of Valkyria 3, and would still have enough pure profit left over to contribute non-trivially to Sega's bottom line for the fiscal. And now we move into VC1PC's long-Steam-tail phase, where it can expect to roughly double that unit-sales figure over the next few years, with that being nothing but pure profit for Sega.

(Now, if they're just sitting on all the profits instead of investing it in VC3 like above, they a) are sitting on an actual Scrooge McDuck pile of money and b) are being kind of dumb if they aren't acting on one of their franchises getting jumpstarted back to life.)

I said back when this launched that we'd need to see sales in the hundreds of thousands by March to have any hope of VC3 (or maybe VC2, if Sega isn't paying attention to fan reaction) getting the Steam PC treatment, especially in the way that would actually ensure it'd be a success.

Well, here we are.

I would say that now you can start dreaming that impossible dream. Because I know I am.
emot-3.gif

This has been my single most-played Steam game for the last few months. There is simply nothing else that balances strategy, puzzles, RPGs, and hands-on action perfectly.

3 on Steam would be another day-one, no question.

The goodwill this release has brought will no doubt increase if SEGA of Europe can get SEGA of Japan in line with our wacky idea and show they care for the attention fans and newcomers give these games. Unfortunately, hopeful as I am, SEGA's had enough mistakes over the years that I'm cautiously optimistic. To reclaim a kind of innocence and hope for these projects to happen without error, in a time of my life when I'm less complacent and naive than before (unless there's something I don't know), is just the worst feeling.

Just more fuel for the #Operation422 fire. With this news, it's time to double down.

Definitely. I half-suspect they're already beginning porting work, but if they aren't you have a legitimate case to make now. Feel free to quote my post/the thread, even, if you want to bring it up elsewhere.

And on that note, if you bring it up, in the interest of full disclosure there are a few places where I AM having to more or less guess in my "napkin math": Little Stone's contractual fees and Sega's taxes. I have a relatively good idea of how much Little Stone must have made (or at least, what a living salary would be for 5 guys per month), but exactly what their compensation was depends on a lot of things the public isn't privy to, like exact development time and other fine contractual details, so in a lot of ways that's a wide estimate. The other is Sega's tax burden on VC1's profits - I'll be honest, because my own experience with business tax lies with a small partnership rather than a large corporation, this is a much larger guess. If they are somehow getting reamed in taxes it might not be as much as I think, but I kind of doubt this is the case. Conversely, if they're somehow able to write off any money put into VC3 or whatnot as a business expense, whoa nelly, that's when things potentially get really crazy.

But, yeah: even very conservative estimates (with Little Stone getting a tiny money bin of their own to swim around in, and with Sega eating taxes pretty hard) of what kind of revenue and profit VC1PC must have generated on 210,000 units sold with nothing more than a debut and participation in a single seasonal sale suggest that Sega has easily upwards of a million dollars that could be invested into a VC3 port, with the figure going significantly higher the more you make the potential math favor Sega. And that's off the back of less than half a year of sales, when the game's long tail can easily double unit counts and bring in tons more revenue.

If they aren't doing something to widen the Valkyria franchise on PC, they are out of their minds and you should make that very clear.

I agree that to stop at the first game would be foolish on PC. I also think that skipping straight ahead to 3 would be an OK move, though it may create confusion with people worrying that they're missing story elements from the 2nd game.

There's many things SEGA can do to work with what they have, I just would like to hear that they're actually doing whatever they decide to do. Contrary to what some people may say, I am NOT OK with waiting 2+ years between ports of games with finished assets they don't plan on remaking.

One thing I pulled from the thread about the development of the title that still confuses me is why Valkyria Chronicles 2 producers were credited with the release of the title on PC. I will be shocked beyond compare if the producers of the PSP title had a hand in making this come to PC in some weird twist of fate lol

Did those four from SoJ have anything to do with the original PS3 development? Could just be them returning to oversee the project. Were they credited for anything related to the localization of the first two games?

EDIT:

Hmm? Checked Giant Bomb for those four names and they're all credited for VC1, not VC2.

It's possible that they worked on both games but from my searching for each name:
Shinji Motoyama: Giant Bomb has nothing regarding Valkyria for him, but Wikipedia credits him as VC2 and VC3 producer. VC1 producers are Shuntaro Tanaka and Takaharu Terada.
Katsuhiro Matsuta: Chief Programmer for both VC1 and VC2.
Tatsuhiro Oshii: System engineer for both VC1 and VC2.
Takeshi Ozawa: Director of all three games.

(It wouldn't surprise me if the people that worked on VC1 and VC2 also worked on VC3, but since it never came out in North America / Europe we're missing some documentation).

My guess is that these people probably didn't have much to do with the port and that placing them on was just a courtesy to the original title. Only outlier is Motoyama, every search about him staples him as the new VC2 producer. Since it's all internal, we'll never know the truth... but we can guess. :p

I mean, I really hope that SEGA understands that the thirst is real for the VC sequels to reach Steam. All the other PC ports Sega has done in the past few years have either been fresh IP without sequels (Binary Domain, Viking), or the last major release in their IP (HotD:O). Then, WHAM, this one is the first of a trilogy. That's bound to create demand for the sequels.

Is it really? I haven't seen a lot of interest for them. The original VC was mentioned everywhere when it came to the "what japanese games you would like to see on PC" topic, but I've hardly ever seen the sequels mentioned. Personally, I never got them for PSP because I just look at the art style change and I hate it. It's like half the VC3 characters are so over-the-top they could make cameos in Blazblue or something, and VC2 is some high school drivel. That's not the tasteful VC style I came to love, the one that strikes a perfect balance between WW2 and anime. And they're handheld titles too so they're bound to be dumbed down in a lot of aspects, most notably level design. I probably wouldn't get them for PC either. I'd rather SEGA just forget they ever existed, retcon them, and make a proper higher production value prequel or sequel to VC.

Well I think it is obvious that since the PSP sequels never even remotely penetrated the NA market that the requests wouldn't be very up there for a port. But I think there would be a bit of a struggle once people realized the faults of VC2. It's not something that merely porting to PC can fix.

That's why I said a while back I think SEGA's in a hard place with this one. Do you take the time to port a mediocre game that doesn't always respect its predecessor? Do you take the time to not only port the game but fix the game? I haven't played VC3 yet so I can't come to a judgment on the game, so would it be smarter to just skip VC2 and go straight to 3? But now you have to localize and port a game and potentially confuse the fanbase as to why part of the series is missing... especially if cameos happen in the 3rd game. Do you ignore both titles and create a modern reboot that acts as a true sequel? To me that would be the best-case scenario but has <0.1% chance of happening.

Unfortunately given the tough scenarios there are to deal with I think we will never see anything more on this series for PC unless SEGA wants to be a hero one more time. PC is respected as a platform now thankfully but I don't think it's earned enough respect to be a dedicated platform for a once-console series. All we can do is hope the sales of VC1 on Steam convinced them to do... something. :p

Gah... I'm stuck in a 99% crash scenario again after completing a mission... this is getting really annoying. The game runs fine until I encounter certain missions where I just crash after the results screen.... a lot of this is caused by the side missions too =(.

You downsampling? Like using gedasoto or something? That what was causing mine.

I'm not sure what gedasoto is, so I don't think that's my issue. I haven't done anything explicitly to downscale either. I'm just using default settings (720p, 30 fps, etc.) and now it's starting to even crash on certain cutscenes. I've tried messing around with settings, putting my laptop near a huge fan to dissipate heat if it felt too hot, but it'll just start crashing in certain spots in the game. In the past I was able to get past these crashes, but today I'm not having much luck. I'm hoping it's some type of transient state I can get around by playing different things, but I have no idea...

I finally got around beating Valkyria Chronicles just now, after having put it on-hold from early on for some strange reason. It's a great game and it saddens me to hear how the sequels were put on PSP and especially the second came supposedly being poor. I still hope the sequels, especially a localized third, sometimes finds their way to PC.

I more or less like most things about the game, be it the story, gameplay or whatnot. Not to mention the music. That said, it suffers a lot from being unpolished like a diamond in the rough. Scouts break the game halfway through and it's far too viable to simply rush through missions, especially as it nets you more rewards. Luckily, there are a mission or two later on that makes this "tactic" impossible, but it's far too little. Speaking of breaking the game, the final mission seemingly requires you to do so I felt!

Still, it was a blast and I am not particularly angered by the faults as much as I look at them and think "Well, it's a thing". There are also some other unpolished issues, such as lancers being near useless and some missions feeling a bit meh. I enjoyed the more tactical, open-scale, battles the most.

I think I summed up the game best like this: Valkyria Chronicles completed! It was a long, tough, immensely broken but ultimately heartfelt journey.

From what I've heard, the sequels do rebalance the gameplay a little. Is this true?

I also just finished, but it's impressive how much there is left to do. The remaining upgrades, DLC and skirmishes on higher difficulties will easily double my play time.

I never really thought that the game was "open" so much as a puzzle with somewhat constrained solutions. Even on the wide-open maps there are clearly intended optimal strategies based on enemy placement and movement. That said, the ceiling for efficiency is pretty high and I find the fun to be in planning a turn that accomplishes as much as possible.

The final mission wasn't actually all that hard, was it?
Just deploy three lancers and use smoke rounds every turn.

I just finished the game myself and loved it. I think the presentation and story made a lot of it though, as I think it was top-notch. The gameplay is fun too. It's funny how you thought Lancers were useless, even though I used them so much (esp against tanks =) ).

Last mission spoilers:
I actually just used my tanks as shields and two shocktroopers side by side to beat him. Also a sniper took out the power stations. His attacks are predictable enough to dodge for short distances.

I've finished most of the skirmish DLC, but I need to go through the other two.

Good news. Was contacted by Feunoir recently and he speaks English at about 75% power. I can begin my long-term project of updating the game's translation.

Also began a separate project by picking up the Japanese version of the game (It's kind of criminal how cheap it was because of its poor Japanese sales though I'm not complaining). I have some goals related to that that I hope I can pull off for people who own the NA version of the title.

I agree that there's so much to do in the game. The DLC, Challenges and Hard/EX Skirmishes are totally brand new missions that show that even if you reuse a map it's possible to create a wholly new experience by properly repositioning troops and obstacles. I never thought I would imagine the Chapter 1 map as "doomsday" until you see the Expert Skirmish for it.

The final mission has a ton of ways to beat it. I struggled a lot thinking of a solution though because I kept forgetting I had
a smoke round and I kept getting owned by regeneration, reassigned towers and interception fire.
But yeah, there's a lot of ways to win.

You know you hear a lot about how Lancers, Engineers and Snipers are useless from other people but I couldn't disagree more. You have to view them as specialized units to be called for the occasion. I used them plenty of times, just not as "main offense units" that break the front lines.

Level 20 Lancers in particular with
Ultimate Anti-Armor potential
do far more efficient tank killing work than people give them credit for. :p

For the final mission, I found that
the Shamrock with the machine gun completely tore through the boss. Having Rosie, Vyse, and the Shamrock fire in a single combination attack is overwhelming (especially for 1 CP).

I... didn't even realize
tanks could participate in combination attacks.

Playing at 60 FPS seems to increase the power of interception fire, thus eliminating one of the largest gameplay complaints about the original release! (The viability of scout rushing)
