Who's directing Splatoon? I know its one of the young guys at Nintendo but I'm curious what else he has worked on.

The producer is the person who directed animal crossing on GC and Wii. the director worked ..on new super Mario bros 2 for 3ds and Wii sports resort :p

Anyway I'm looking forward to splatoon for mostly it's single player platformer heavy story mode.

Ok but you just described a lot of games. PvZ garden warfare has all of that and etc.

The VR: Valve vs. Sony seems weird. Doesn't seem like their in direct competition with each other. Unless it's just a hardware comparison. If so I'm interested.

Not really a terrible cover. I mean it's not fantastic, but it does manage to be both minimalistic and eye-catching at the same time. Could've done a lot worse.

Animal Crossing guys.

First one is Sakaguchi and the second one is Amanao, think they worked on Animal Crossing, etc...

Interesting. Moving from a friendly casual game like Animal Crossing into a Tactical-Shooter like Splatoon. Nintendo must have a lot of faith in these guys. I like it.

What's so special about Splatoon?
Have a Wii U and love FPS games.

Seen video's but not sure what the hype is about.
Seems like something I'd get bored of after a week,
not something I'd be playing for years, like CS:GO.

Is there a video out there that shows something special?

Looks like a solid multiplayer shooter with a refreshing, joyous art style. Looks easy to pick up and the gameplay looks good with a unique twist.

A well-made, lighthearted arena shooter overall. Nothing groundbreaking, but on Wii U there aren't that many games so it isn't hard to see why something like this gets hyped by Wii U fans when we haven't had a new game since quite a while. Plus, it's Nintendo's first shooting game ever, so that is bound to get some attention as well.

None of them worked on Animal Crossing. Tsubasa Sakaugchi (long hair) seems to be the lead director and visual creator. Before this he was mainly an artist who worked on Nintendo Land and other games. Yusuke Amano, (short-hair) is the co-director, and previously director of New Super Mario Bros. 2 and Star Fox 64 3D.

Only the producer, Hisashi Nogami, is from the Animal Crossing team. He was actually just promoted to head of the production group and is likely also producing the new Animal Crossing 3DS game.

I dig it. Stylistically simple and clean.

Could have gone for a cover more in tune with all the great art but Edge is pretty good at keeping their covers clean, and this works greatly. It's nice to see Splatoon getting the forefront out of all the games covered.

Sakaguchi was a character designer of Twilight Princess and got a mention in the credits for Mario Kart 8 and New Super Mario Brothers Wii.

Here's Amano's notables:

Deadly Premonition: The Director's Cut - Character Design and Modeling, Debug Manager
Star Fox 64 3D - Coordinator
Deadly Premonition - Character Design and Modeling, Debug Manager
Lord of Arcana - Modeling Support
New Super Mario Bros. Wii - Planning
Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree - Assistant Director

Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day! - NCL Product Testing
The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures - Special Thanks

Ok, can't do it right now, so you'll have to lend me your imagination.

A pair of sunglasses hovering on the eyes of the squid on the cover. Ok?

I think you're confusing edginess with minimalism.

This is Splatoon, not Shadow the Hedgehog 2 :^)

Nintendo has been trying to grow and let some of the younger guys have some spotlight. I think it is a good thing gives something fresh to enjoy, I think Splatoon is the first bigger game following that though.

very very surprised they didn't go with a messier ink splotch motif for the cover

It's something you'd have to actually play in person to understand the hype. It's tactical chaos, where there are no wrong actions.
Spraying ink indescriminately is valid, kiting enemies around their own territory is valid, killing enemies is valid, creating paths via covering fire for your allies is valid, holding a crucial hotspot so allies can warp to it directly is valid. It's a shooter that has nothing to do with accuracy or kills, and everything to do with intelligently reading the situation.

Yeah I agree. Its just that if you told me these two guys were gonna go on to make the biggest new IP for Nintendo in a while I probably wouldn't believe you. Well they got their shot and hopefully they capitalize! Looking forward to it.

Your ticket pays for the whole seat but you'll only need the eeeeeeeeeeeeeedge!

Yeah, but no. They could have used a way better cover to feature the game with. I wouldn't be able to grasp anything just by looking at this.

Awful cover. It would be ok if the squids were the type of iconic character you could recognise by their eyes alone but they aren't.

I'm praying this game doesn't flop but I don't see it being a hit or having legs like Smash/Mario Kart. I think Nintendo turns Splatoon into a franchise though and I have full confidence in their ability to make a high quality product.

As for the cover, I think it's great.

It won't sell Mario Kart numbers but it will catch on and do well no matter how long it takes it to.

People screaming "bomba" as if it will sell like The Wonderful 101 or whatever are in for a surprise/rude awakening.

I could see this taking off enough from word of mouth on Miiverse.

Oh come on it's a nice cover! I'm sure Splatoon will be awesome and I will be there day one playing the hell out of this game with the butt-cheeks-eyed-sea-critter. It's not like everyday you're getting a brand new big home console Nintendo IP wich has also online multiplayer!

What did they say about ff15?

Haven't read it fully. I'm not a Final Fantasy or Witcher player, but after a quick read some highlights perhaps -

- Tabata doesn't feel under pressure, feels he has many fans support.

- Felt that certain members of the team created problems during the development of the game and demo as they had set limits as to what they felt they could achieve. This resulted in negative approaches that held the team back. The worst stated by Tabata was: conservative thinking that did not recognize the need to evolve or overestimating some of the technical risks involved in doing so. The thing I have spent the most energy on in development is clearing away all of these notions about the limits of what Final Fantasy can achieve.

- Some similarities with the Witcher III's quest structuring it seems, along with the campfire system which involves using the ingredients found during the day to be used in a meal, similar to the Witchers use of potions, you'll spend a day gathering supplies for the meal that grants the boosts you need to tackle a boss the next morning, in their words.

- Get the impression that Edge like the game, but it may borrow too much without innovating enough.

- Edge finish with - There is an awful lot to like here, but much remains to be done if Final Fantasy is to reclaim its rightful place at the head of an increasingly crowded grid.

The other thing to remember, I guess, is that even if the raw numbers aren't that huge, there's always the amiibo, 3DS themes, badges (sorry, NA/EU/Other), DLC and so on that can help make money if they can get a lot of buyers to grab the other stuff, too.
