AV Club - The 100 best films of the decade (so far)

Everyone jumps to the assumption that others lie about their taste. why lol. what's to gain.

I don't know that people who level that criticism really think about it that much - it's just the fastest, easiest answer to grab that sounds like it makes sense (kinda) and so they run with it.

A lot of people tend to default "critic" to "pretentious," so it's a REAL easy jump to assume someone who would even want to be a critic would have no problem lying about what they like in an attempt to impress other pretentious people.

It's a shortcut to feeling smarter than smart people you disagree with, as opposed to just intelligently disagreeing with smart people.

Toy Story 3 absolutely belongs on a list of the 100 best films of the last 5 years. You can argue where on the list it should go (I think it's kinda low for this list, myself) but I have a hard time imagining a list worth much of a damn where it gets left off entirely.

It won't be. Thankfully (hopefully?) neither will films like American Hustle, The Artist, The King's Speech, and GOTG (pretty good films but not top 20).

I'm thinking/expecting the following in the top 20 though (as not having them in a top 100 from the last 5 years would be a joke): Her, Birdman, Boyhood, Django, Grand Budapest, The Master, Whiplash, Before Midnight and The Social Network.

50-21 According to A.V. Club

50. Amer
49. House of Pleasures
48.The World's End
47 We Are the Best!
46. A Touch of Sin
45. Upstream Color
44. Stranger by the Lake
43. Computer Chess
42. The Loneliest Planet
41. The Wolf of Wall Street
40. Gone Girl
39. Force Majeure
38. Bernie
37. Magic Mike
36. 13 Assassins
35. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol
34. The Grey
33. Amour
32. Martha Marcy May Marlene
31. Take Shelter
30. Inception
29. Leviathan
28. 12 Years a Slave
27. Melancholia
26. Drive
25. The Immigrant
24. Zero Dark Thirty
23. Moonrise Kingdom
22. Everyone Else
21. Meek's Cutoff

Bolded are movies I thought would make their top 20. That leaves these still in play for my prediction:

Social Network
Tree of Life
Whiplash
The Master
Grand Budapest
Django Unchained
Four Lions
Her
Nebraska
Birdman
In the Loop
Holy Motors

Kinda surprised to see Computer Chess up that high.

ten I think are guaranteed top 20 members:
Margaret
Holy Motors
Before Midnight
Certified Copy
Under the Skin
The Duke of Burgundy
A Separation
The Act of Killing (against Mike D'Angelo's protestation)
The Tree of Life
Her
Was this a reader poll? It mentions voters.

No, the voters were the AVC writers in the byline. Though I don't see where they mention what the specific process was--something involving submitting individual top 50 lists, compiling and then voting from there.
I hope The Raid 2 is up there somewhere in the top 20.

Hopefully Prisoners also.

wouldn't recommend holding your breath for either of those

Wait a minute....

Did I just seriously see a list with Magic Mike over Gone Girl?

Fingers crossed for Dredd and/or Kingsmen to make the top 20.

Winter Soldier/Guardians both in the top 20? Seems likely.

I love both of those, but from the way this list is going I don't expect them.

That said, as a busy dad, I don't have much time to go to the movies like I once did prior to 2008, so this list is a good for me to know what movies I've missed out on.

Hopefully Holy motors is in the top ten. Certainly like nothing else that came out in the last few years. I adored that film with every fibre of my being.

That would be a pretty good list.

Didn't realize the Duke of Burgundy got such universal acclaim, though I quite like it. Didn't understand the Certified Copy love at all, maybe I should watch it again.

My totally uneducated guess for additional top 20 entries:
A Prophet
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Poetry
Inside Llewyn Davis
2 Days, 1 Night
This is Not a Film
Leviathan
The Tribe
The Great Beauty
The Social Network (You know they will put it there)

Since Winter Sleep made it, it's hard to imagine that the more popular, universally-acclaimed earlier film from that director, Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, won't make it as well.

So this is from 2010 onward? Whiplash got that #1 spot then. A Separation #2.

edit: Searching for Sugar Man that much above Exit Through the Gift Shop? That's a bold move.

Only one of these I would be surprised by would be The Tribe--think that's been too divisive.

Certified Copy and Duke of Burgundy are both films that I enjoyed a ton while viewing but later saw as excellent because they sat with me. Hard to shake either picture. And as instantly-acclaimed as The Duke of Burgundy was I still find its score undersung. It's brilliant.
We gonna see American Hustle on there?
sure hope not

All that needs to be said is that some films on the list shouldn't be on the list while some films that aren't on the list should be on the list and all the positions are wrong anyway.

Other than that as good as any voted list - i.e. mostly useless.
