Sequels that will never happen for games that ended on cliffhangers

Prince of Persia 2008 has a massive cliffhanger.

Granted, it got [partially] addressed with DLC but come on.. I want a fucking sequel, Ubi! DO IIIIT.

cliffhanger was the best part. I loved how bold and Ueda-esque it was.

Then they announced DLC epilogue. FUck this

Viewtiful Joe 2. A conclusion to a prospective trilogy was strongly implied, but Capcom spun off the brand into Double Trouble, Red Hot Rumble, and an animated series before shutting down Clover, driving out their top talent, and forgetting about Joe completely outside of a roster spot in MvC.

While Metroid Prime: Corruption offered a lot of closure, it also left a thread dangling concerning the Hunters (as is visible in one of the post-completion scenes), and even if we see a Prime 4 eventually I don't expect the Hunters to be revisited.

Dante's Inferno had a big old "TO BE CONTINUED" screen right at the end...a shame second game will never happen, i thought it was pretty good even if it was a clone

Viewtiful Joe 3 will never happen and Viewtiful Joe 2 ended in a cliffhanger of the question of who built the VFX watch then the castle rose in the background and Joe and Sylvia headed towards it.

Mega Man Legends 3

Man this one hurts the most as we were so close.

Chrono Cross kind of ends with a cliffhanger
(Though no apparent threats remain, it is implied that Schala is still alive and traveling through many timelines, including our own, to look for Serge). Schala became a time/dimensional wanderer.

Highly doubt we will ever see a new Chrono game.

EDIT: Also Mega Man Legends 3 and Breath of Fire IV.

but there was Breath of Fire V (and even 6)

Viewtiful Joe. The next setting looked so good too.

Viewtiful Joe has a sequel, several in fact.

Original Topic: I want to say Golden Sun: Dark Dawn, but frankly every Golden Sun game has ended on a cliffhanger. Too Human, I suppose?

Drakan comes to mind. It seems like Surreal was working on a sequel but didn't get it greenlighted.

And Xenosaga Episode III, sort of.

Definitely Shenmue 2.

*sigh* yep. I don't really care for modern gaming too much anymore, but Shenmue 3 running on current PC or console hardware would be incredible... unless it was riddled with microtransactions, broken up into a bunch of DLC packs or riddled with game breaking bugs...

This was an amazing game. I loved the chemistry between both main characters and of course the ending was really what you would call a cliffhanger. But I gave up on a sequel, even if there would be a new PoP, Ubisoft would make it boring as all their user AAA games.

I'm really hoping The Phantom Pain doesn't end on a major cliffhanger, since Metal Gear Solid is over now.

Rhythm Thief and The Emperor's Treasure ends on a major cliff hanger. However, given Sega's recent decisions, I am doubtful of a sequel ever being made.

But they are not sequels. Breath of Fire V was set in an alternate timeline and it has nothing to do with the story of the previous 4 games.

EDIT: Xenogears is another great example.

Ah, yes. I mean, who wouldn't be able to recognize the game that these iconic characters are in from this screenshot? Very obvious if I do say so myself.
Gandalf, Clank, Simon Belmont and Black April O'Neil Save the Galaxy.

Gotta love those unique original characters "Old man with long beard" and "Robot companion!" Seriously, name the game too please.

Virtues Last Reward, Zero Escape 3 plz happen. :( The end of VLR sets up a sequel, but unfortunately there has been issues securing funding.

I thought Kirby 64 ended on a cliff hanger when I was young, turns out I just got the bad ending.

I mean... there's a chance, but it's very slim right now.

Such a badass ending.

EDIT: It's Darksiders, damn it!

DS2 was such a big disappointment. You can't make an awesome ending like that and then tell some lame side story in the sequel.

Metroid Fusion

The ending completely turns the series on its head...and Nintendo have no idea how to take it forward.
Nearly 15 years later and we've had 5 games take place be before the events of Fusion instead of going forward..

Well, both my favourite Megadrive games, Ristar and Dynamite Headdy, end by showing that the villains are still alive and could return.

Of course, after this, Headdy has that secret boss where you fight the owner of the theatre

Not so much a cliffhanger, but I really really wanted to see what was next after the events of the first Baten Kaitos. Origins was fantastic but it was prequel, so while it was amazing in pretty much every way it couldn't address the aftermath of the first game.
