for me.

Dang good costume design, god now im kinda wanting to see Firefly show up in the DCCU with an all out costume like this.

Might be my favorite MCU costume, its like they just said screw the costume budget, design practicality and "functionality".

I wonder what kind of sequel plans Doctor Strange and Ant-Man will have. I mean, if we follow the current plans, unless they integrate the character into other films and Avengers flicks, we won't get a sequel for a good five or six years... if ever (Incredible Hulk).

Ant-Man would fill the fall slot in 2019 and Strange sequel in 2020. But yeah, long waits between solo movies.

If this is a comedy (and it seems to be a comedy) why aren't they selling it as a comedy?

This is the same studio that made Guardians of the Galaxy a thing. Why can't they establish a coherent tone for this film? Especially when the tone they seem to be working very hard to build keeps getting undercut by the fact the movie is actually a comedy?

I'm sure the movie will be entertaining as hell. But they are not selling it very well.

The big money shot of the trailer ends with a silly visual gag involving a Thomas train set, how are they not selling this as a comedy?

What trailer are some of you watching?

I have a feeling it will just be like the Iron Man films. Where gags are used to lighten the mood but they never go full comedy.

Because the other 7/8ths of the trailer is selling a redemptive action/drama about a world threatening corporate overlord that can only be stopped by a petty thief who just wants to keep his daughter safe, complete with serious music and portentious dialogue.

I'm not saying there's no comedy - I'm saying that the movie has been reported to be way more of a comedy than almost anything else, and the marketing for the movie is trying to sell "straight-up superhero movie with a couple jokes because Ant-Man is a silly name lol right"

The train falling over on its side isn't a "money shot," either.

Just because the trailer has 3 jokes in it doesn't mean the trailer is selling a comedy. It should be selling a comedy. Instead it's trying to sell people an action movie with Paul Rudd.

It looks like the tone of the movie isn't very well reflected in these trailers. There are jokes, though it's possible that's just a product of Rudd's delivery since he's used to being in purely comedic films.

I get the impression that marvel knows how goofy this all seems at first and aren't confident they can hook people with the comedy so they've focused more on action and spectacle for the trailer. They could always do a more light hearted one later.
I imagine the super serious tone and the epic grand soundtrack are intentional since they immediately contrast it with some mundane stuff. The serious speech about redemption by Pym, making Lang ready to reform, followed by Scott Lang needed to break in and steal something.

The epic train battle, immediately followed by the zoomed out view of just the toy train toppled.

Probably part of the theme of the movie, even though you're small, and have a silly name, you can still have epic grand adventure.

Pretty much. I think that's why the played up the epic superhero adventure stuff in the first teaser trailer over the comedy of the movie. They want people to take him a bit seriously just cause his power and demeanor is so funny and ludicrous.

I don't know how you can look at that trailer and not see another home run for Marvel.

Some people are still waiting for the first flop and grab on to anything that doesn't tickle their balls just right. The appeal is too broad and the brand strength is too strong though, regardless of quality. Fans of the source are just happy to see it taken seriously by the studio itself.

Maybe it's because they're trying to sell a movie that's being pulled in two different directions by two completely different visions: the former director's and the studio's.

Superhero gotta superhero. It was never just going to be a straight comedy.

We said that with Guardians of the Galaxy

That movie wasn't being sold like this one was. It appealed because it didn't seem to really want you to take it seriously.

This trailer (and the last one) wants you to take it seriously - when it's not taking jabs at the fact it's asking you to take something called Ant-Man seriously.

I guess what's bugging me is this is the first real Marvel ad campaign that feels out-of-date/out-of-place. It's selling a superhero movie to an audience saturated with superheroes, by essentially apologizing for the silliness of its premise. This is what superhero movies USED to do all the time. "Yes, we know. Yellow spandex. But I promise you there's cool stuff in here. Trust us."

They don't need to do that anymore. And Marvel, especially, doesn't need to strike that tone. Especially after the success they had with Guardians.

"Fuck you, it's Ant-Man. You're going to fucking love it. Look at this goofy shit. It's awesome."

That should be the thrust. But instead it's

"You should like this. It looks like a real superhero movie, even though it's called Ant-Man. But it's still a 'real' superhero movie, so dont' sweat that it's Ant-Man. You'll still like it, trust us."

A question about Yellowjacket (potential spoilers for the movie):

Does the Yellowjacket suit drive Cross insane? Or is he just an out-ant-out bad guy?

I liked this trailer but I'm inclined to agree. It really doesn't feel like the movie will end up matching these trailers.

By all interviews, the new director and Paul Rudd made it a lot more about "comedy" than whatever Wright had written.

I don't know man. After Marvel's current streak (Cap 2, GotG, and DD) maybe I had my hopes set too high.

When I said home run above, I meant more from a business perspective.

Run that trailer in front of The Avengers and they have a guaranteed hit. Again.

Not sure why the former director's vision is in play here.

If they aren't using entire chunks of Wright's movie in this version, I'll eat real ants. I'll shove my face in an anthill. I'll let them pour down my throat. I can make the most ridiculous demands on myself imaginable, because THERE'S NO WAY IN HELL THEY AREN'T.

When I have Wright's script and Rudd's script in my hands, and can see that for myself, then I'll believe whatever they have to say about how little of Wright's vision they're using.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

Of course they will use some pieces, but what I am saying is that they would not choose those pieces if they didn't fit into their vision. They are not just going to shoehorn in something Wright had just because.

It just doesn't make sense to say that the promotional material is at odds with itself because of Wright and the studio.

Maybe, but I feel more like the shoehorning is the other way around. Let's use what we have, but rewrite it enough to fit it into the current MCU, and run with that. If it's ALL the trailers, and just bad editing that is making it seem like this movie is actually two different movies in one package, then these are the worst-edited trailers I've ever seen.

I'd be extremely surprised if the narrative doesn't revolve around some sort of "a suit doesn't make you a good or bad person, the person inside does".

Which makes sense if you think about it, since this is the epilogue of phase 2 and phase 2 began with Iron Man 3 which is all about that.

I did laugh at the Thomas the Tank Engine bit. Those CGI ants looked terrible, though. But this is an early trailer, and it is generally the case that unfinished CGI shots will get used.

I love that fact every single movie trailer these days is exactly the same, the music, the pause for comedic lines of dialogue.. the huge end build up then silence for a gag shot.
