Scam DIY Portable N64 on Kickstarter is a Scam

With how strong and cheap ARM systems are, I think the better route would simply to make an emulation based system with an N64 cart reader. Would likely have much better battery life than what the scam in OP would have as well.

Feels like we should mass report this to Kickstarter now...

They never listen. They don't care as long as they get their cut.

Reported it when I first read this thread like a week or two ago

Not sure what else I can do :\

kickstarter being kickstarter

It was clear from the start that these people giving money were only getting a pencil case and a few dollars worth of components. They will probably get exactly what was promised.

What exactly is the reason it should be reported? I thought the issue with the original one was that he stole other people's images.

The screen only accepts the standard N64 input (composite input) if your n64 is RGB modded it will not accept the screen, you will need a N64 that hasn't been modded which I can supply for $50. If you would like a N64 console included in your kit, pledge $50 additional and message me so I can include the console in your kit when I ship it out in February.

THE FUCK.

Anything stopping him from pledging the last 76 dollars (either his own cc on a different account or through a friend) and finishing the kickstarter? Cause that would suck for people since he could technically deliver on promises and then get a nice payout.

That aside, I know most people are not into forums like GAF, so they don't get it's a scam, and you hate to blame victims, but simple google searches can find you most things, and a little effort can get you the parts. Maybe this is one of those "life lessons" parents always told us about at when we were all younger, kinda like "a fool and his money are soon parted".

There's no reason. People in here don't seem to understand what a scam is. No one was ever promised a built portable.

You realize the instructions for building a portable n64 are freely available, and theres literally nothing he's doing wrong.

The specific instructions he was clearly using to build these portable n64's were publicly available for individual use, not for commercial gain. We've already seen a tweet from the original creator of that particular DIY complain about his instructions being used in a commercial venture such as this

One last thing, in case anyone thought there was still a slight air of validity to the Kickstarter

A. He doesn't own the instructions to build a portable n64.

B. I could write my own guide and it would be nearly identical. Much like the numerous portable n64s built before and after this persons.

C. Unless he is literally copying and pasting the guys instructables page with no alteration, then he's not doing anything wrong.

He does own the pictures rights.

That's what he did at first. He even stole his pictures. It's a scam, plain and simple.

Yes you could but it's absolutely crystal clear to anyone following this kickstarter that the person behind it is using someone else's instructions for commercial gain without said creators permission

C. Unless he is literally copying and pasting the guys instructables page with no alteration, then he's not doing anything wrong.

I disagree. It would be nigh impossible to prove in court but it's entirely obvious what the kickstarter creator is doing and how he is using someone else's work without their permission. I really can't make it any clearer then that

Not to mention his first failed Kickstarter that he had run and cancelled earlier this year.

I can't believe we have people defending this.

So, it is now funded now...

Here is a selection of the final backers to the project....

Let's check a few of those names...

Those two first joined Kickstarter last month, this is the first project they ever funded.

In fact, all 7 of the above names first joined Kickstarter last month, this is the first project they ever funded

I am not flat out saying this is a scam, but judging on this, and the collection of other thing both I, and others have gathered in this thread, it should set a few alarm bells off that something is wrong.

"I've been on a cruise ship for the past few weeks with no internet signal (unless you want to pay an arm and a leg)."

That wording :lol

'I do hope this update helps'

Lolololololololololol

Never backed a Kick-starter, never will

Hey, Kickstarter is fine. and there's a large majority of them that are totally above board. it's idiots like this giving it a bad name. go pledge for Yooka Laylee already.

jts

...hate me...
The shocking part is that he couldn't even follow the instructions himself at least to have something of his own to take pictures of, and yet still sells this shit, and worst of all people still buy it. What a world.

Soldering can be learned in less than 5 min on YouTube.

Soldering is an art. They're people who've been doing it for years but are still shit at it. These kits aren't for everybody as they're many things that can go wrong with DIY electronics.

Kickstarter is shady, they let shit like this fly all the time. Yeah some good projects see the light of day because of it, but the people behind Kickstarter are fucking assholes. How many people reported this? Dude took 5K and went on a nice cruise, he was never going to supply anything.

The theory behind it maybe. Actually getting good at soldering only comes with lots of practice. I bet you someone who never soldered in his life before wouldn't be able to solder this after just watching a few youtube vids on the issue.

Lol according to his updates on KS it took him 3 months after the "project" was funded to even order the parts online.

Funnily enough it's been another 3 months since then with no sign of the parts

I need £5k to pay my remaining debt

I could easily do something like this. No comeback, no threat. Just instant free money.

But of course, I would like to assume I'm a decent person, so it won't be happening. But the fact that it is so easy is a definite problem.
