Remote Play Thread: Play PS4 games on Vita/VitaTV via WiFi at home or away

I'm interested in installing the unofficial RP function on my Samsung Galaxy S3, I hear my phone doesn't have to be jailbroken to do this? Can someone give an easy to follow tutorial for me, the forum listed in the OP has a tutorial and the downloads but I still find it a bit confusing.
Nope, no root/jailbreak required.

1) Download the .apk file from here (RemotePlayPortV0.9.1.apk)
2) Open it like you'd open any downloaded file to install it. If it doesn't let you, you need to enable installing apps from unknown sources first.
3) Play

Just tried remote play after the update with a vita first, then my Sony Z3 phone...

The vita is excellent. I use a direct connection and the ds4 workaround and it's definitely better. Dragons Age Inquisition ran perfectly; great frame rate, no sound hiccups (this was a problem before) and I can now slide the brightness all the way up - which is awesome!

The z3 experience was less impressive. Clearly, I'd benefit from a direct connection but to my knowledge, the phone can't do that. It played fine for two minutes or so and then the dreaded poor connection icon reared it's ugly head.

Now to be fair, I've done no work with my router... It's hard wired into my ps4 though. I'm not the "router guy", I don't know how to change the settings to benefit remote play and the vita works so well in the house that I'm not too bothered.

If I ever wanted to play outside the house though, I'd be screwed.

Overall and for my needs, the update has greatly improved my remote play experience.

Have you made sure location services/GPS is disabled on the phone? I was getting disconnects every 2 minutes like clockwork but has been perfect for months now without any disconnections at all apart from when I forget to turn off GPS!

No I haven't... I'll try it and report back.

Thanks :)

Wow... those touchscreen controls are not great. I guess the novelty of being able to go into my PS4 in my pocket (I don't carry handhelds around, I think they'll get damaged) is nice tho. Won't let me register a DS4 tho, pressing "Register" does nothing. Guess it's an issue with the cracked app, not that I'd be carrying a DS4 around with me.

Cant say I did, I thought that was only on the handheld vita.

I did seemingly forget to change the 60 fps setting though. I was sure I had but I guess not. Maybe I just looked at it lol. Either way, that helped a bunch when putting it on but it still has some lag. Will try some more tonight.

Im super impressed with the new firmware.
The VitaTV can use it too, so be sure to try it with that option off.

The image isn't as sharp as a native vita title, but responsiveness of the game is like any other title with 30fps update. Pretty cool stuff. I was playing remote play while watching TV, and I didn't miss not playing on the bug screen at all. Was playing infamous first light and it worked perfectly. I can even watch YouTube o the vita through the ps4 lol.

When I moved to the next room though, I started having disconnection issues. Seriously thinking of upgrading my WiFi.

Yeah, it isn't quite as sharp as a native res vita game, but it's pretty close. I'm impressed with the quality now whereas I was meh on it before.

This is awesome! I'm playing on the Z3 TABLET and although the picture quality and resolution are better on the tablet the performance was lacking a bit compared to the vita.

Are there any other settings I should be aware of??

I just tried playing some d3 on remote play (something I have done a ton of) and it's a world of difference. It really feels like playing a native vita game instead of a medicore stream of my ps4. This is awesome.

Yes indeed. From the menu to the game itself, everything feels good. (I hate 30fps user interfaces)

So much better :)

In case anyone is interested, I found a way to get Netflix working via Remote Play for those of us in Europe who don't have a native Vita Netflix app.

  1. Launch Netflix on the PS4
  2. Start playing a video, then pause it
  3. Put PS4 in rest mode
  4. Wake up the PS4 with the Vita and it should put you straight into the video, with full control, you can back out select something else, everything.

Doing it this way obviously bypasses whatever bullshit check they have to stop you doing it normally, but a video has to be playing when you put it in rest mode, if you put it in rest mode in the netflix menu it won't work.

I have managed to setup remote play with my shield portable by using the latest version without hud.
I had to forward some ports after the update to make it work. If anyone is having problems after the update try to forward the ports.

So, I was reading the OP but I couldn't understand it very well. So I appreciate any help.
When at home, do you need a Wi-Fi connection for Remote Play? Is this good enough?
Download: 4 Mbps
Upload: 365 Kbps

You dont need internet connection when at home. you need a wireless router and thats it.
ıf you connect from outside you need an internet connection with preferably about 5 mbps upload speed.

Ok, thanks. Appreciate it. I think I left out one important detail though, I have a Z2 only. So does it work the same way as the Vita?

Been having rough connection for a while even after having power save mode off, but after switching from Wifi channel from Automatic to channel 11, it works flawlessly

I'd like to solve two problems, but I thinks it won't be easy at all.

The new router is the cause of all my problems I guess.

Remote Play using PS Vita from outside

A few months ago, while at office, I was able to turn on my PS4 at home and play. It was just a test but it worked.

A few weeks ago my provider changed my router to VF3220. Using the new one, I was not able to do the same anymore. I think the reason is this router and the ports I've forwarded.Maybe.

My setup:

Remote Play using Nexus 5 (Android)

Same situation. But this time I'm talking about the same network, at home. So both PS4 and Nexus 5 are using the same wifi connection/network. While in the past I was able to use it, now I cannot anymore. Once again I think the problem is related to the router. Something seems to be closed.

Any suggestion?
Thanks.

I haven't had any problems and both are connected via WIFI to my RT-AC66U. Framerate and Video set to high also. I wonder if those having problems would benefit from a better router?

I have that router and I have a lot of problems with remote play on Vita.

It's weird, remote play on Android over the internet at work is a million times better than trying to get remote play working at home through the Vita. I'm not quite sure what the deal is.

So ps4 is at home wired with a 5mb upload speed, and myself and Vita are 100 miles away at the in laws with 6-8mb download speed. Tested Bloodborne, Axiom Verge, and The Last of Us, all of which looked and played beautifully, with the latter 2 titles running at 60fps. I'd done the same thing with Watch dogs a year ago but it was a little spotty at times so I think the latest update definitely helped - welcome to the friggin future

Thanks for impressions.

I noticed that my direct connection to VITA was unchecked last night, I checked it and now my VITAS remote play at home is crystal clear and smooth.

will a Playstation TV work that way as well?

I have that model with the same problem. Oddly enough, I could connect for an hour at my work no problem either. My internet is around 100/15 on Speed Test, with my PS4 before averaging 8/3 on wifi.

I resorted to using a $35 TP-Link powerline adapter kit to my PS4 and it fixed all my remote play issues. PS Now also works flawlessly, too. I'm getting 18/8 average the 3 times I tested the connection speed.

I bought a TP Link powerline adapter kit as well, but I think the interference in my home's wiring is too much, because I get even worse speeds through powerline than I do with Wifi.

I'm confused. I use direct connect to my PS4, I sit right next to it when using remote play, I turned off wi-fi power save on my Vita and I activated the high-quality mode. But remote play is STILL terrible for me. Full of compression artifacts, audio cutting randomly, I often get the "bad connection" icon... I have no idea what to do at this point.

It's most likely interference. Turn off direct connect and report back.

If it's still bad, try selecting a different WiFi channel. If that still doesn't work, then something's probably faulty with your Vita's wireless chip.

Sucks it's only for slim. That and it's a gamble.

Slightly unrelated but I've been trying to get remote play working on my phone and not sure why it can't find the PS4. Not sure if it's the app that's the problem or the phone (Xperia Z1).
I'd just stick with the vita for now but can't play BB because it's too frustrating.

Anecdotal, so sharing this purely as a 'this is interesting perspective', but...

A good friend of mine was recently having a lot of PS TV remote play issues, stutters, artifacting, disconnects etc, despite having all of the usual suspects taken care of (Wi-Fi power save setting, high quality etc). Remote play is working fine via his Vita, and the issues are purely limited to the PS TV.

After a bit of messing around, he discovered that removing the HDMI cable from the PS4 solved every single issue he was having. He's spoken to Sony who've confirmed that they're looking into disabled PS4 output to help improve stability.

Haven't had a chance to try myself yet, but he's a trustworthy guy, and he's shown me his email trail with Sony support stating as much, so this could be a valid quick fix for anyone having issues. Obviously YMMV.

Apologies if it's been mentioned in the thread prior to this - on mobile so struggling to read through it all.

Just been browsing this thread as my Vita is arriving tomorrow, I won some money on my staff lottery, so I've taken the risk and bought the L2/R2 adapter, it should be here in a week or so, I'll give some impressions when I've played around with it.

Remote Play away from home actually works (now that I have good internet). Had a go with REmake which was virtually flawless for the half hour I played it. I need to test out a faster paced 60 fps game like Resogun next. Bravo, Sony. My flabber has been magnificently gasted.

^ HDMI bug is mentioned in the OP FAQ since ages ago, very rarely someone reports it.

I actually solved this bug just now, it was driving me crazy!

My PS4 is not yet connected via LAN and I always used direct connect with my Vita since I'm mostly in the same room anyway but something bugged the hell out of me. Especially with the 60fps update my Remote Play experience has been crystal clear and lag-free on the video side of things, my PS4 games handle like native Vita games. But every five seconds there was a audio cut-out for one second and I couldn't solve this one so I chalked it up to me having to connect my PS4 via LAN.

Although then I thought, if the signal is really too weak (my PS4 connects with 94% to my router) I wouldn't get crystal clear 60fps video so I started googling. Sure enough someone had the same sound issue and mentions that switching his TV on to the PS4 fixed the issue for him but that obviously defeats the purpose of Remote Play. I tried it myself and indeed, with my TV on the sound was perfect too. So I looked on and found the same "unplug HDMI cable" fix which is annoying but when I told this to a friend he said "sounds like the HDMI connection is interfering with Remote Play some, how odd"

Then it hit me, interfering... HDMI connection... what could cause it... HDCP maybe?! I went and disabled HDCP on my PS4 which is thankfully possible and sure enough all my Remote Play issues were history, 100% perfect audio and video, and that's with both devices on WLAN but really I can't even think of what LAN could make better! :D

So long story short, if you have weird unexplainable Remote Play issues, go and disable HDCP on your PS4, it might help :)

You can emulate that by simply going into PS4 options and preventing it to connect to the internet altogether [or turn off your router :) ]. That way, it's WiFi module will only be tasked to work with Vita.

Sure go ahead! :) And oh thanks for the tip, it's a smart way to test thing, will try it later! :D
Also I know this is probably more of a question for Network-GAF but since I don't really want to lay another long LAN cable through my place, would there be any difference in LAN connection quality if I simply LAN my PS4 to a second LAN port on my PC and use the PC as a LAN bridge to my router?

Just got a vita, and the remote play was pretty awesome the first day.

Problem is that it stopped fucking working after that. Now my Vita refuses to turn on my PS4 through the internet, which is weird because it totally did it fine the first day. I can't now, though. My PS4 is set to be able to turn on via PSN, and I have it set to auto login my account, and it's on rest mode. What gives? What can I do to fix this. It sucks that it works so well, but it's kind of a big fucking deal breaker if it can't turn the system on via the internet...

Has anyone heard how Witcher 3 is with regards to Remote Play?

None of the reviews I read have mentioned anything although 6 months or so ago the dev stated they were optimising the game specifically for RP.

High framerate mode does is not really playable on my Nexus 7, sadly. Really bad constant stutters. Standard is fine, it only stutters very rarely. Played about an hour of Tropico 5 that way and only got one stutter.

Tropico 5 is also a pretty great game to remote play, btw. Text might be a tad small on Vita, though.

It's that an old (2012) Nexus 7? Might have trouble decoding, HFR works wonders with the Vita though, even for 30 FPS titles.

i was still struggling getting the DS4 to sync to my nexus 7. I'm guessing you used the sixaxis application that is suggested from xda ?

2013 Nexus 7. I also tried bumping up the visual quality to high and sometimes that just gives me a black screen.

I've been using an OTG USB cable for now, works fine but it does mean I have a cable hanging from my tablet. I tried bluetooth but my DS4 acted pretty erratic.

Perhaps I'm a complete idiot. But using direct connect shouldn't it be possible to use remote play without even having an internet connection?

I ask this because that's what I'm assuming, PS4 and Vita send signals to one another.

Having enabled direct connect, I get messages that the wifi signal isn't strong enough from time to time.

I just got the Vita and I've tried it a few times, earlier today it worked, but it was crappy and I was 5 feet away from the PS4. Tried again a few hours later and it worked so well. Been trying again since and it's either horrible or just not strong enough to connect even though the two devices are a foot away from one another.

Lastly, when I go to network settings on my vita I can see a PS4 access point, which I'm assuming is my PS4 because I can't see that option on any of my other devices, tablet, laptop, pc etc. But, it's asking for a password, no idea what it is.

Any help would be really appreciated and yes I've read the OP and did a couple hours worth of research and messing about with no luck.

Edit: Since making this post, I can't connect at all. It just won't connect and I have no idea as to why. I have ports forwarded, my ps4 is wired directly to my modem, I have it set to direct connect, but even without it doesn't work, wifi power savings is turned off, my upload speed is just over 10 and download is 18. My wifi security is AES. PS3 RP feature is not turned on.

The only thing I haven't tried is the 2.4GHz WiFi connections because the link in the OP is borked. I don't care about playing from a distance for now, I just want to be able to use RP so the TV is free for something else.

Edit #2: So I managed to get it to work somewhat/hopefully, I took my vita close to my modem and it seemed to be working pretty well. But when I went further away and closer to my PS4 it was worse, which had me thinking that it was not even trying to connect directly as it was set to do. I then deleted my access point on the Vita and ever since it has been working pretty well as long as I remain close to the PS4, although the sound cuts out for a split second every so often, but that's not a huge issue. We'll see how this works over time, but at least it's progress.
