I'm all for positive opinions, but they completely glossed over all the technical issues with the game.

A friend of mine has the PS4 version and while I did notice the "ghosting" effect, I did not notice any "huge" framerate drops. I would say it doesn't keep 60fps constantly, but in an average race, it is not a deal breaker. Now, when you have tons of cars visible, rain, sunset, etc, yeah... the game slows. If you specifically look for these issues, sure they are pretty visible... but if you just play the game, it is not as big a deal as I think many are making it out to be.

I have been playing it for 10 hours now on PS4 and the performance is totally solid for me. There must be some very specific circumstances for things to get bad.

Gen X

Trust no one. Eat steaks.
Anyone else currently driving the Formula Rookie car in Career?

Is the gearing supposed to skip like it does? Goes from 1st to 3rd, 4th to 2nd, etc.

Tried to research the specific gearbox of this car but I can't find any information on it.

Are you using a wheel with a shifter or just a pad? There are a few options in the config to invert the shifting or force H pattern or something. See if that helps maybe?

Right, just booting this up on PS4 for the first time. If the default controls are dogshit, what do I need to change them to?

See if this helps.

There is a big difference between trepadition and flat out negativity.

Can you name, names? Because I haven't seen any of the Forza regulars on GAF trash the game. In fact during the last race we had many of us were looking forward to buying it.

Also, a lot of hot air balloons.

Hahaha! What you don't like Willow Springs looking like F1 came to town?

I enjoyed the Shift games for the drivers experience they were trying to convey through the cockpit, but damn if that wasn't one of my biggest pet peeves.

I'm so pleased to hear this is turning out to be the game I've wanted on console (bugs aside) when I joined WMD at the start. And I'm really surprised at all the positive reviews.

I can't wait to play it on Tue. Might even take the day off of work.

Ok can add Azure coast to the list of tearing tracks. This is the worst so far. Online race with 13 other people, sunny conditions. Wondering if theres something up with my ps4?

Random musings after faffing about in the menus etc this afternoon (PS4, ymmv):

If you want to see how pretty and smoooth replays will look like once the horrendous skipping and judder bug is (hopefully) fixed:
  • start a race with a full field of AI
  • immediately quit to the pit box (options -> retire to pit box)
  • select 'spectate'
  • hit 'triangle' until you find the replay cameras
  • sit back and enjoy
  • (left and right cycles through the cars)
  • press circle for exit menu

What the hell is Global Specular Irradiance? Should I like it?
What the hell are Crepuscular Rays? Should I like them?

Why does my Fanatec GT2 work perfectly but get recognised as a joypad, meaning that the full config menu (inc FFB, FFS!) isn't available and for some reason button configs do not save?

Who designed the UI and have they ever attempted something like this before?

I'm absolutely loving the on-track action, but maaaaaan... there are a LOT of annoying little niggles that should have been ironed out a long time ago.

I know I can move HUD items around but can I find where that option is? Can I fuck.
Why on earth aren't things like this grouped logically? There's a 'visuals' tab in 'options' for example - why not have the HUD options there? There might be some underlying logic to the way the UI is set out but it's got me completely baffled so far.

Light rain and setting the time of day to 6-7pm with more than max cars on track at Laguna Seca should produce some slow downs on the front straight. Le Mans with max cars as well, on the front straight.

But like I said, once you actually race and there are only 5-10 cars visible the game is pretty solid.

I take it back. The racing experience pretty good. It took some hours of testing but I’ve found it necessary to change a few crucial settings to improve the FFB and now the game is far more playable.

PCars version: PS4
Wheel: T300RS
Degrees: 900

Control Settings

Steering Deadzone - 0
Steering Sensitivity – 70
Throttle Deadzone – 0
Throttle Sensitivity – 50
Brake Deadzone – 0

Brake Sensitivity – 35
Clutch Deadzone – 6
Clutch Sensitivity – 35

Speed Sensitivity – 0
Controller Filtering Sensitivity – 0
Damper Saturation – 0

Force Feedback – 65
RMP Gear Display – Yes

Controller Input Mode - 3
Advanced – On
Soft Steering Dampening – Off
Visual Wheel Filtering – On
Opposite Lock Help - Off

Force Feedback Settings

Tire Force – 100
Per Wheel Movement – 0.00
Per Wheel Movement Squared – 0.00
Wheel Position Smoothing – 0.04

Deadzone removal range – 0.00
Deadzone removal falloff – 0.01

Linkage Scale – 0.00
Linkage Stiffness – 1.00
Linkage Dampening – 1.00

Relative Adjust Gain – 0.98
Relative Adjust Bleed – 0.10
Relative Adjust Clamp – 0.96

Scoop Knee 1.00
Scoop Reduction 0.15

Soft Clipping (Half Output) – 0.00
Soft Clipping (Full Output) – 0.00

The steering sensitivity setting may vary depending on your wheel and degrees of rotation, but on my T300RS I found the default setting of 50 to be very vague. 70 seems to provide a good turn-in feel.

Force feedback strength may vary, but 65 was good for the T300RS.

Make sure soft Steering Dampening is Off.

Scoop knee seemed to create a point during the steering lock where the FFB artificially increases. Setting to 0.0 or 1.0 gets rid of this behaviour. Setting it to 1.0 allows you to also adjust the overall FFB strength reduction with Scoop Reduction. Perhaps set this to 0.0 if you’re trying to increase FFB strength to weaker wheels.

There are a number of vehicle specific settings as well, but these settings should give a good base to work from. In my opinion of course ;)

As far as your wheel not being recognized, it could be because it's not a PS4 peripheral. The only official wheel is the T300 I think. The T500 doesnt have full functionality while on PS4.

It's a shader/lighting effect that mainly affects the road surface. I can't really explain the visual effect and can't remember the actual tech behind it so I recommend just trying it out. I do have an old screenshot for reference, but the effect might look a bit different these days: http://www.abload.de/image.php?img=pcars2012-10-1221-33-lou7v.png

Also known as Godrays, here's an old in-dev screenshot from the first-ish implementation (they look quite a bit better, but should demonstrate the effect well enough).

Can't speak for the first one, but crepuscular rays is just a fancy word for the god rays effect we always see.

They look nice to me but of course your own preference is for you to decide.

I'm hoping it's a bug, because Project CARS officially supports my wheel. I'll be pissed if I can never access the full tuning options because of some bullshit bureaucracy.

Edit: thanks for the answers above. I thought the God Rays were 'sun flare'? What the hell is 'sun flare' then?

Jesus, SMS, would it have killed you to put some descriptive notes next to all of these various options? Lol.

My guess is that they are limited in what they can do as far as the driver supports goes since it's not an official PS4 peripheral and not really recognized by the PS4.

I know the game supports it but it's not supported on a system wide level, so I don't know if there would be a technical hurdal to accessing all the features.

If that's the case then I will be right royally fucked off. There was never any mention of limited functionality when the announcement was made. I'd have built a PC instead of buying a PS4. Seriously.

"A few glitches."

Opinions on this game seem to be extremely mixed, but it's reviewing well. Interesting to say the least.

I think it's simply a case of the good is so good that it outweighs the bad. There is so much this game does better then any game has ever done on a console. It's not perfect, but it's really good at a lot of different things. It may not be the best in any specific category, but the sum of it's parts are better then the sum of any other console racing sim in existence's parts.

Sun flare is probably the weird light effects that happen from the sunlight, the way it reacts to the mirrors of the camera or the curvature of the lens I assume.

God/crepuscular rays are the nice ones that can be broken by things obscuring the light source, whereas the flares are normally a simple texture or shader effect.

Isn't that Lens Flare? That's in the options too.

I've had enough problems solving puzzles in RPGs - I wasn't expecting them in a racing game as well..!

So I'm in the US, which means I can't test the game myself.

But there are a lot of bugs/problems being reported with fanatec wheels on some other forums (gtplanet & official project cars forums). Some people don't get the wheels recognized (some say only the CSR is recognized), others have huge deadzone, etc.

Since your wheel seems to be working well for you now, I wouldn't try to mess with things now. Enjoy it as is for now, and wait for more info to be collected and a proper solution found. It would suck if you update firmware or change something, that makes things worse for you.

Not a huge fan of the lens flare, a bit over done in this game, seems like I'm looking at the sun with a 25 piece camera lens.

Imagine going into the WMD forums for three years and half, saying this, offering solutions, and after three UI iterations, all that's changed are cosmetics and every single issue still remains.

I've said it plenty times, even at the WMD forums: This is the worst car and track selection UI I've ever experinced. By a country mile. It's so absurd it hurts. One would say it has been designed by someone that barely, if ever, plays the game.

No idea then. Maybe sun flare controls the effect from the sun, and lens flare controls the effect from man made lights like headlights?

Ugh fuckin hate these karts.

The menu UI is one of the worst I have ever seen in a game. Who designs this shit in 2015?

To be fair the track selection used to be a lot worse (not that it's great now by any means).

Also the fact you have to go all the way to the garage to select a car livery... Or the fact it still asks you for your car number when you start a career even if it's not used anywhere.

I've not played many circuits yet, but on the California Highway performance is tearing like a mother. Quite off-putting if I'm honest, and that happens even if I set to clear weather and just 10 opponents.

Can't say I've noticed ghosting though, have no complaints really apart from the tearing.

The amount of options and flexibility in this game is superb.

Ah, thanks for the heads up. I've just been tweaking some on-wheel settings and am happy with the feel and control - it's the additional FFB configs I want to access. I'll leave things well alone and see if a patch is incoming. It sucks that some people can't use theirs at all.

It's worth noting - mine only works in PC mode, NOT Playstation 3 mode. It sucks a little because the various buttons don't light up with the various PS symbols like they do on the PS3, but it's a minor gripe. I wonder if those people experiencing problems are trying to use theirs in PS3 mode..?

Non-related, but I just did a long dawn-to-dusk race with a full grid at RA in the Z4 GT3 and it was frikkin' incredible. I realy do love the way these cars drive.

TBH, I did wonder just how much impact the 80000 developers had on the game, because there are glaring things in the game that should be better, the UI being one of them.

The WMD members did have a lot of influence on the game (more than any fans for any other games in developpement). However, at the end of the day, it remains WMD's game and it's not a democracy. They have the last word on design decisions and also they have constraint they have to take into accounts that WMD members are not necessary privy to.

There was a beautiful design that one of the members did, but only a few parts of that design made it ingame due to time constraints. The UI should've had a lot more attention, sooner in the development process.

The Xbox One version of the game was clearly not ready for release with all the little bugs it has, not super game breaking stuff but enough to make you very frustrated.

Let's start with the biggest controller issue, steering lock and the bug where the game can't keep up with left and right or something. These can kinda be fixed in the settings but it's not very smooth when you steer overall, it feels notchy.

The audio bug where you hear cracking sounds etc, mostly happens when you brake.

Not being able to start a career mode(says locked but works after a couple of tries)

Freezing (http://xboxclips.com/FAILGUBBE/fe85d05d-73c6-4329-8567-6d0b91fba12b)

Timewarp (for a lack of a better word) when your car slows down but all other cars seem to be at regular speed then all of a sudden your car warps a couple of meters. Happened to me at the Dubai Kartdrome every lap at one corner only

Maybe im just unlucky but it's near unplayable with the steering right now, im going to try a few other settings but the game needs patches. Badly.

Does using an Xbox One controller on PC use those rumble triggers? I played Forza with it once and loved it. It might push me into buying an XBONE controller for my PC.

It's not possible to do that on PC right now. Driver limitation with Microsoft.

Did some more testing with the DualShock 4 on PC.

This game just wasn't made for the controller. It's a complete mess. I'm having to pussyfoot down the track in fear that the car might lose control and I won't be able to recover. Adjustments and counter steering don't feel right at all. Usually, I'm pushing the car as hard as I can, but it's just not possible in this game. That thrill is completely missing due to a lack of controller optimization.

I've played with the settings a ton, and there doesn't seem to be a good balance. Lowering the sensitivity helps a bit, but then then it feels like you're driving JELL-O; it's an unresponsive mess.

That being said, I'm sure the game feels great with a wheel. If anybody has good DualShock 4 settings, please post them because I'm ready to shelf this game. It shouldn't take hours just to get controls to work properly.
