Sony unveiled the PlayStation 3 at E3 10 years ago today

There was so much vaporware in this conference, its sort of funny to look back on it (Ni-Oh, Eyedentity, Fifth Phantom Saga, Killing Day). It puts into perspective that towards the beginning of every generation that there are at least a handful of games shown and hyped by fans that won't amount to anything.

Also funny seeing games like Killzone 2, RDR shown when they didn't release for another four or five years. Crazy.

Riiiidge racer!
Who can forget that horrible conference (up there with Nintendo 2008 and Konami's Extreeeme one), this price and those fake demos.

Horrible first year, but it was nice to see them come back from that,
lose money
and be more humble.

Wrong conference budddy

I still remember it even when they showed the price for me that point i was buying a 360 and how things have changed in those 10 years.

come on.... It's not hard to read the title and first sentence is it?

Nvidia RSX pulled down the whole Cell project.
They had the G80 in development but didnt want to sell Sony a customized version. The 8800GT released a month or so after PS3 and made the console obsolete. :(

I agree, it could have been so much more tbh.

Time flys by too quickly.

I remember being amazed by the ducks in a bath lol.

Can't believe it's been 10 years. Great OP!

Man, they really fucked up the beginnings of that console. I don't think I even knew the damn thing existed until 2008. I was going through a more causal phase back then admittedly, but even so, I adored the PS1 and got a PS2 about a year or so after it launched, so by rights the PS3 was something I should've known about early on.

At least Sony turned things around in the end I guess, but not before almost going bankrupt.

Weellll... there was a massive marketing campaign and there were all kinds of news stories on shortages, so I feel like you not knowing about the PS3 until two years after is probably on you. They fucked it up no doubt - but consumer awareness was not the issue.

I remember watching it at my Girlfriend's (now wife's) house on her PC while she was playing Eternal Darkness. Good times.

A truly baffling conference.

Edit: Derp, this thread isn't about THAT conference.

The PS3 was the only console that I didn't get on release day because of that stupid price (SNES, Genesis doesn't count)

It was more a case of Ken wanted all that shit, and the rest of Sony eventually had to say "how are we going to make any money on this thing?"
Why would someone even use 3 ethernet ports at once aside from building a missile launching supercomputer in north korea?

So much controversy this system brought. Good times.

Great system.

Shame the PS4 isn't nearly as ambitious and as advanced for its time as PS3 for its timeimho.
Yet it's still the most powerful console out there and has been very affordable since day 1.

no it didn't. it was a fanboy argument point of discussion and the game did not make nearly as big of a splash as some people hyped it up to make.

The actual game didn't matter, im talking about that CG demo.

For the next 5 years, every shooter tried to emulate the immersion and quality of that CG demo. From Gears of War to Battlefield.

i remember them claiming the Ps3 can do 120fps.

Kutaragi pointed out that the Cell chip can decode more than ten HDTV channels at a time, and can be used for rotating and zooming effects. He also discussed some of the different ways in which it could be used - to display actual-size newspaper pages, for example, to show more than one HD channel on the screen at a time, or for video conferences.

Kutaragi also explained how a processing power of 25.6 teraflops could be achieved - by creating a Cell cluster server with 16 units, each made up of eight Cell processors running at 2.5Ghz.

Kuturagi was boss as fuk lol

We will never see this kind of ambition or hype again

I was also 12 and a huge Nintendo Fanboy ...

I pretended like the PS3 was trash! I think my 12 year old me hates me for loving my PS3

I was in high school, ah those were days...

I remember how they backrtracked super hard on the boomerang, what a joke that was heh. And i also remember all those teasers and trailers that ended up just being vaporware CGI fests. It was indeed unfortunate.

However the hype was real of course, i could not wait to get one for KH3 and FFVersus, FF13, Tekken 6 and all those previously Playstation only franchises.

The reality being for me that i didn't pick up a PS3 unti 2010 cause i was so pissed off that they fucked up almost everything to the point i could not even afford to get one, but i think it worked out in the end. The exclusives both third party and first eventually made the difference as MS went in another direction.

The main failure being that even after all that , 360 was still my main way to play multiplats regardless, and considering that is the majority of releases, what they took away with the PS4 was undeniably correct. Now they just need to get their first party house in order...i know SSM, Evolution, and many other Sony studios have crashed and burned in recent years, had to essentially press "restart", but i'm hopeful. Here's to hoping PS4 is looked back on better in February 2023

To paraphrase Vince McMahon, we all bought it hook, line, and sinker.

Yeah, it definitely seemed like PS3 would be another PS2 at the time. The 2005 conference was pretty impressive with the specs and announced support. Of course they changed some stuff in the final console and a lot of the game trailers were target CG renders or vaporware that never came out.

Nobody expected the disaster that was the 2006 conference. Credit to Sony for turning it around after they completely botched the launch.

Also, i have to agree the GPU on the PS3 was the biggest failing in terms of actual hardware design. It essentially took a huge ass chunk of the CELL's potential away from it, forcing it to work on almost every game to pick up the slack for RSX.

I wonder why Sony went with them even knowing just a gen before, they fucked over MS in the same way, being uncompromising in pretty much every aspect of their design

I am amazed how Playstation 3 games (granted not first gen games) still look extremely good (same applies to 360 to a certain degree).
