Sony unveiled the PlayStation 3 at E3 10 years ago today

Spider-Man font = bad. Build quality = bad. First two years of software = awful. Still kind of sad we never got the Batarang.

Everything else = amazing. One of the greatest consoles to ever see release, despite Sony killing themselves to put it all in a box for $600 (itself an insane asking price).

Ahh, crazy times, crazy times. But ambitious times. If Ken Kutaragi got his way, Sony would be bankrupt but the PS3 would've been one truly amazing device.

Glad that I own an original model with the most complete feature set such as the card reader, chrome trimming and BC. Which still works :)
Funny thing about that picture is the After is a lie, too!

(It's missing HDMI)
Didn't Sony unveiled that the 20GB model would also include a HDMI port just a few months before launch

What the fuck were you supposed to use an extra HDMI and two extra ethernet ports for, anyway? Like, what is the practical use case for that shit? Was the extra HDMI meant to be a pass-through thing like the XBone has?

Agree.

The second HDMI was meant so that you could have two outputs to two monitors/tv's.

The ultimate goal was that PS3 would be powerful enough to say play a game on one screen while you browse the internet on another or have game map/stats on the other screen.

Also you could have "panoramic view" and extend your display over 2 monitors while gaming

Also there may have been a local co-op use as well.

I miss all the graphs and pie charts from the conferences

ME TOO!

I still care about how many households have a PS1 or how many titles sold 1 million! Sony need to go back to spending half an hour on raw statistics at the start of E3!!!!

(I'm actually being somewhat serious here haha, I have thing for data).

And so it is a date to remember ?
All I remember was 599, the hilarious conference montage and the pathetically insulting CG footage sold as real by such a firm.

Very sad that Factor 5 wasn't around long enough to make a game for PS3. Would have love to see them do something original that was published by Sony.

Also sad to see that three of the games announced (Fifth Phantom Saga, Eyedentify and Killing Day) never came out to PS3. I guess I should be wary of anything announced for PS4 that we haven't seen.

Wrong conference.

Eyedentify seemed like a cool concept at the time but I think the camera adoption rate killed the game. I think it would work a lot better now on PS4 or on Xbox 360 when Kinect launched.

Damn, I remember as if that was yesterday. I was completely blown away by all the graphs and numbers and bla bla bla. I was a huge fanboy, I'm ashamed of that, lol.

Maybe it was supposed to be a HDMI pass-through and three PS3s connected via Ethernet and using the same Internet connection... but why.

It's exactly because of the PS3 that Sony went more sensible with the PS4, though.
This.

The revisionist history I'm seeing for PS3 lately is getting very annoying. The console was seen as pure venom when it launched, and it wasn't till the end of the gen did public feelings start to change.

Why some want a repeat of that (even when PS4 still came out as the most powerful), I don't know.

I still want a batarang controller...

Is anyone here still rocking their PS3 Phat?

Yep, bought it in July 2007, just after they announced they were discontinuing the hardware PS2 BC model. I still play it the most out of all my consoles and it's running great.

All models of the PS3 had HDMI ports.

It was the 360 that had no HDMI (at the time), No Hard Drive, No Wireless. To even get the 360 up to the 20GB PS3 level it would go over the price of the PS3. I think the 360's 20 GB hard drive addon was what, $129.99?

Also, i have to agree the GPU on the PS3 was the biggest failing in terms of actual hardware design. It essentially took a huge ass chunk of the CELL's potential away from it, forcing it to work on almost every game to pick up the slack for RSX.

I wonder why Sony went with them even knowing just a gen before, they fucked over MS in the same way, being uncompromising in pretty much every aspect of their design

This fucked over is bullshit on the same level as "nVidia so salty".
Sony got what they paid for. If anyone fucked them over it were themselves.
The RSX is also based on the best nVidia gpu that existed for their original planned launch date.

Not a launch console, but my 80GB PS3 that came in the Motorstorm bundle is still running just fine. Very loud, yes, but it was always was. It's got BC, but through software emulation (which runs just fine IMO).

It's apparently worth some money, too. Amazon will give me something ridiculous, like close to $300, if I ever wanted to trade it in to them (I looked up the SKU). What I eventually want to do is open it up, clean it out, perhaps re-apply thermal paste where I can, and box it up/store it. I've been waiting for Sony to announce a price drop for the PS3 though, so I can pick up a Super Slim...there were also rumors around this time last year that another version with smaller chips was going to be made available, but haven't seen anything about that since (I believe the Cell and RSX chip had a die shrink last year).

The $300 360 launch SKU is the one that had no hard drive or HDMI. The "Elite" $400 one had an HDMI port and included a hard drive, so the only thing you needed to buy separately for it that you didn't need to buy for the PS3 was the wi-fi adapter.

Nvidia RSX pulled down the whole Cell project.
They had the G80 in development but didnt want to sell Sony a customized version. The 8800GT released a month or so after PS3 and made the console obsolete. :(

SO MUCH THIS.

Nvidia took Sony for a ride. I always say, they kept on dissing unified shader units, on occasions they said they believed discreet shader units were the way to go even for DirectX 10 (they were saying that they'd support unified shaders, but through discreet shader units. ATI introduced the revolutionary design on the Xbox 360, and were not lying about their plans in the pc space, they were going full on with the unified shaders.)

Few months after PS3 launched, Nvidia introduced their line of GPU's, wait for it, with unified shader units.

Not all PS3 models were originally intended to launch with an HDMI port, the 20GB lacked one at first but was later added just before release.

As for the 360, the $400 sku included a 20GB hard drive. That's $100 cheaper than the cheapest PS3 sku at launch. And if you include the wifi adapter** that's $120~$140 cheaper than the PS3 model that has wifi.

**which was in the range of $60~$80 if memory serves me right

Yup, launch 60GB, bought in Feb 07 - though by the end of the gen it was a back up console. Also it had been repaired once, so if you're question is, are there still functioning Phats, take it with a grain of salt. Still it has native full PS2 BC.

I was 14 when this happened. The room where the computer was was being decorated, so I had to bring it into the bedroom. Also, because we were still on a 56k line, no broadband. So there was no watching this until years later. E3 2007 would be the first one I'd watch live.

I'm 24 now. I'm about to witness my ninth E3.

PS3 phats were time bombs. Granted it usually took a long time before the dreaded yellow light of death occurred.

My launch unit started having major issues around when TLoU released and finally died early last year but i didn't play it much until 2011 or so.

My phat lasted me some 7.5-8 years. Pretty much a whole generation.
The game that killed it was Arkham Origins, in case you're wondering.

Mine's still going. It's not a launch model but I bought it around the time of the first price drop, which might have been when they announced that they were dropping backwards compatibility. I'm not sure.

Granted I barely used it until about 2011 and it's loud as hell, but it's still working fine. I replaced the 60GB HDD with a 500GB but otherwise all the same.

The birth of Wii60 for me

I was so disappointed in not only the games but the price of the system

$599 0_o shit. Still makes high school me sweat

I was happy to pay Nintendo and Microsoft instead

Eventually ps3 became a powerhouse and had amazing games but that reveal x first year sucked
