Witcher 3 Patch 1.04 is out on pc

Just got home, and my PC was asleep so it hasn't updated yet. I heard a couple of people say they're getting crashes now or worse performance... how widespread is that? Should I update if the game was perfect for me before? Actually, do I have the choice of not updating? I guess in the past with some Steam games I haven't been able to play without updating.

Here are a couple of 4k shots.. I disabled Hairworks to get a consistent 30fps.

Game looks amazing @ 4k.

I have had 0 problems with this patch.

You can turn off auto updating on Steam easily, game by game even. Not sure about the GOG Galaxy version because I can never even tell when it's patching, but have all the patches.

Personally, haven't had a problem with the new patch.

You can turn off auto updating, but generally (in my experience) if I try to actually play a game that hasn't been updated, it forces me to update before I can play.

I don't know what's going on anymore, no more shimmering even on ultra.

Fuck it, just going to ignore whatever it is and enjoy the game.

Any word on the promised native DS4 controls and button logos? I am still a little steamed about that one.

Did you see that checking the "scan code" box when selecting what key you want to bind makes the touchpad useable now? No button icons, but everything works now.

I use swipes for signs, multitouch for quick save, and left/right for inventory and map.

And native support was not promised. Check the tweet again...PR guy said they hoped to add it.

Maybe you should check this one. But whatever. I just wanted to know if they talked any more about adding proper support for the thing.

The unlockable menu key bindings are all wonky for me. I can bind map to anything yet the default M is still the only key that opens the map. Other menu key bindings seem to work, opening up the correct menu, yet when clicked a second time open up the default menu bind. It's like there's two separate bindings, and the game is reading both. I have not messed with any ini files, modded, or anything of that nature.

Aight, found an old save and old screenshot and lined them up.

1.03 mipmap on left. 1.04 mipmap on right.

This was actually the biggest thing that was bothering me in the game. Something very low poly/last-gen/very low textured in the foliage struck me off since I started playing. I never thought it would be fixed and attributed it to the developers having to scale down the graphics. Boy, thank you for that tweak there in latest patch. Kudos.

I'm still on1.01 on ps4.. I should have gotten this game for PC. Looks like it will be another 3 weeks before we get 1.04

I don't like the TextureMipBias change they introduced. Some of the foliage was sticking out like a sore thumb. I've changed it back to a more blended, well-rounded look that 1.03 had.

I feel like they're second-guessing themselves because of all this downgrade talk and making silly changes. The sharpening setting from the last patch was totally unnecessary as well. Now this new setting can only be changed back manually. Which means if I ever install and play the game again I'm going to have to remember about this.

I just have an old i-7/920, 16G RAM, and Titan X with a 49" 4k TV.

Also using stock settings (all Ultra).. no mods.

Heh, I have a 3770k @ 4.4GHz, 16G Ram and 3 6GB SLI Titans in 4k/60 and I just barely get 30FPS with hairworks (and some of the other settings turned down). Probably because it runs like shit on Kepler boards.

Well, for the record, you can still play this game without updating on Steam if you just run the EXE from the folder rather than launching via Steam. But I went ahead and updated anyway. Fingers crossed.

can someone who knows a lot about tinkering with the graphics here tell me how I can get rid of the shimmering effect that I see on some of the characters. For instance on the Witcher necklace that geralt wears sometimes the corners shimmer in the light as does his armor it's really kind of distracting how do I get rid of that??

If anyone was having the inventory crash in the last patch...

Did this fix it for you? That shit is still plaguing me after trying EVERY fix suggestion on the internet.

I believe what you are seeing is the metal material that uses high intensity light reflectance. I don't think you can get rid of that.

Since the new patch my custom keybindings were nuked. I bound dodge and roll to my mouse buttons, and now no matter what I do I can't use those commands. Even rebinding them does nothing.

I'm pretty bummed out right now.

Derp, apparently Geralt wasn't in combat when I tried to test it. Everything's actually working fine - my keybinds were reset by the patch, but work just fine either way.

Wild Hunt still defaults to Borderless Windowed instead of Fullscreen every launch, though. Hopefully they'll fix that next patch.

If anyone was having issues getting the mipmap stuff to work, cross-posting:

Just a headsup with 1.04 and the mip map stuff.

For some fucked up reason in nvidia control panel, if I set the negative LOD bias to Allow, this stuff works.

If I set it to global (which is set to allow) it doesn't work.

I leave the setting at 0 in the rendering.ini (\The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt\bin\config\base) and can freely play with the setting under [Rendering] in the user.settings file (in my documents/witcher 3) (add the line if it doesn't exit - it disappeared a few times for me while trying to figure out what was going on).

I didn't get it lined up exactly, but I tried to take a comparison shot after the 1.04 patch. As far as I'm aware, this is ultra texture setting versus the new ultra texture setting. I had other settings customized to try to get about 60 fps on a i3570k 4.2 GHz + 2GB 770.

The foliage DOES look nicer, but sadly I seem to get around 53 fps at that location now. I'm not 100% sure I had 60 fps there before, but I'm still considering turning something else down to see if I can get 60 fps.

I honestly have no idea if it's working or not...

The shimmering on the armour was obvious and very messy at ultra textures at 1440p.

For some reason I went into nvidia control panel to the witcher 3 profile and just changed settings that were at the same value as default anyway to global, including allowing a negative lod bias and since then it wasn't working and I was posting saying I couldn't see a difference between -5 and -1.

I was changing the rendering file number, some people mentioned it was -1 for them but it was reading as 0 for me.

Should have ignored that and looked at the user file (although for some reason it wasn't showing there for me, but did after I deleted it and the backup iirc - I also deleted all the config files in the "base" folder a few times lol).

Anyway that's the file to tweak as per Andy's nvidia guide as well.

You can change the number in the user.settings file in my documents/the witcher 3 under [rendering]. I'm using TextureMipBias=-0.9 with the sharpening off at 1440p.

It might say your textures are at low quality but they aren't afaik, at low textures the abdomen armour is pretty shit and flat, not the chainlinks, you can just leave that as it is.

For me, on a 780ti and winx64 latest drivers and everything, I had to set it to allow for the witcher 3 profile and it instantly showed up.

Also hammer down on the x button when you think your ssd ought to be done loading by :p

I know there is a mod thread, but it seems to be pretty dead. Did this patch make mods not work anymore or something? I had a 9,999 weight mod on, but it doesnt work anymore. Tried to apply it again and it still doesnt work.

All my settings keep getting reset to low as well

Hmmmm. The patch definitely did not add TextureMipBias to my user.settings file. I guess I need to add it manually?

[Rendering]
GrassDensity=2400
DecalsSpawnDistanceCutoff=10
TextureStreamingHeadsDistanceLimit=10
GlobalOceanTesselationFactor=64
TextureStreamingCharacterDistanceLimit=50
CascadeShadowDistanceScale2=1
MaxTextureAnizotropy=8
TextureStreamingDistanceLimit=40000
CascadeShadowDistanceScale3=1
MeshLODDistanceScale=1
ScaleformTextureUnstreamDelay=2.5
DecalsChance=1
TerrainReadAheadDistance=200
HairWorksLevel=0
MaxTextureAnisotropy=8
TerrainScreenSpaceErrorThreshold=1.6
TextureMipBias=-0.6

Not under [Rendering/SpeedTree] which is further below

Or maybe deleting the file and the backup and launching it if that doesn't work.

TextureMipBias=-1 was apparently added to my user.settings file automatically after the 1.04 patch.

I also didn't have to change anything in the nVidia control panel. I'm using the Witcher 3 drivers, GTX 770 2GB.

You can add it manually, or you can delete the file and the Backup user.setting.bak file to generate a new file. You'll have to redo any tweaks you made though.

It wasn't in mine to start with either but after starting the game it appeared. I changed it to 0 to get some screenshots and it disappeared again.

Played for about 6 hours just now after the patch. Froze up quite a few times during cutscenes, a couple of times going to menu, and have gotten stuck on terrain geometry. This is on a great PC with a fresh windows install.
