Witcher 3 PC Performance Thread

Doing pretty well so far with a 290x. Every thing high/ultra @1440p. Frame rates don't dip below my freesync range of 40fps. Can range anywhere from low 40's to mid 70's. This is using AMD AF(seems better) and SSAA edge x12. Motion blur and CA off with HBAO. Sharpening at low.

Did another 15 minutes, bumped everything to Ultra hairworks on and quit the game just now. No BSODs :D. Turns out it might've just been my shitty Razer drivers. Phew!

Jesus christ does it run my GPU hot though, it's usually very quiet, CPU fan is generally louder but not this time :lol. Absolutely love how it looks and runs better than The Witcher 2 :). HBAO+ looks really nice too.

Heh, no doubt. This is the hottest I've seen my GPU go. 82c

Thank god for headphones :lol. Also I don't get the FMV error. They run at a smooth 30 save for minor hickups which I assume is what happens when you game on a WD Green :lol

Just a headsup with 1.04 and the mip map stuff.

For some fucked up reason in nvidia control panel, if I set the negative LOD bias to Allow, this stuff works.

If I set it to global (which is set to allow) it doesn't work.

I leave the setting at 0 in the rendering.ini (\The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt\bin\config\base) and can freely play with the setting under [Rendering] in the user.settings file (in my documents/witcher 3) (add the line if it doesn't exit - it disappeared a few times for me while trying to figure out what was going on).

This is ridiculous, I have deleted every single SweetFX and Reshade file from my PC. WHY AM I STILL GETTING THE FAILED TO LOAD NOTIFICATION

Edit: NVM fixed it, that was frustrating haha

Does anyone have a preference or recommendation between either:
  • Forcing FXAA on via NVCP
  • Using SweetFX to inject SMAA (default settings okay?)
The in-game AA completely tanks SLI performance for me.

Same here with a 780. Having it on the default setting (clamp) doesn't make negative mipmap bias values work

I'm pretty sure that every time I've had a crash (only a handful of times in about 26 hours of game time) I have also had Chrome open in the background. With Chrome closed I've been able to play for six hours uninterrupted but when the browser is open I'll be lucky to make it 30 minutes without a crash.

Stuttering seems to have gotten worse with the last patch, even when I'm using Durante's Rivatuner solution. The patch may have fucked with my in-game settings though, so I'll have to check that out.

I'm touching wood since I had no crash or stuttering in 22 hours of gameplay. Hopefully they fix it soon for people with issues.

Overall I think the PC version is pretty great. It also kind of "repaired" my 970. It used to make an awful grinding noise when the fan would start and it stopped doing it after playing this game.

Can someone explain the difference to me between user.ini and user.settings? I noticed user.ini has the same text as user.settings but the values appear to be set to default for ultra on user.ini. Wondering if this is conflicting with my user.settings as some values I change don't appear to be showing up in game. Selecting read only when done editing as well.

edit: okay that's weird I just made a new copy+paste of the ini settings provided in the OP using notepad++ (was using regular before) and my texture, grass density, and foliage quality read as set to low in the in game graphics settings. What's going on?!

edit2: actually I think this might be the first time it's worked for me, as my performance ain't near what it was before and pretty sure foliage lod and density is higher. Maybe time to go back to vanilla ultra for perf reasons lol.

So unless I missed it. Is there any way to turn off the "Controller Changed Prompt?" it's pretty annoying.

Also, for those of you playing 1080p. What MipBias are you guys playing at? I just put it at -0.7 after the default being 1 for me.

Anyone figured out how to use the DS4 touchpad to open the map?

An ideas why I'm getting better performance at DSR'ed 4k than at native 4k?

I found a pretty good mix of settings that at 4k downsampled to 1080p give me 53-60fps on a set of 970s.

-Hairworks off
-SSAO instead of HBAO+
-Shadow Quality to Medium
-Foliage Range to Medium
-No AA
-Most Post Processing effects Off except Bloom and Light Shafts
-Everything else set to Ultra

So I figured...time for my 4ktv to shine. Its a Panasonic AX800U which is connected through Displayport at 4:4:4 Chroma Subsampling.

Well...at the exact same settings and obviously the same resolution, it tanks to about 31-45fps. An annoying stutter fest. Can't be VRAM usage.

Isn't native 4k suppose to be less demanding than 4k DSR since the GPUs are not doing any downscaling?

My gpu's temp is between high 60s - mid 70's which results in fan speed hitting 78%..
Once it hits 80%, my gpu is going to cause a rift in the space-time continuum and enable me to travel back in time.

Did the patch sneak in a change to repair costs, or is it just my imagination? Seems cheaper, but I haven't paid close enough attention.

Never mind I figured out how to bind the PS button to Map. Perfect. Now does anyone know why if you why if you launch the game using SweetFX. Steam overlay doesn't work?

It seems like this latest patch changed my textures to lower than Ultra even when I change it back to Ultra settings and no matter how many times I change it in the settings it won't go to Ultra. I even tried changing the texture budget to 800 and making the file read only and it didn't work.

This has to be a glitch or I'm missing something because when I go talk to a merchant or anyone else that puts the game in to the text menu mode (with a closeup of Geralt), the textures automatically go back to Ultra and stay that way when you tell the person farewell and start playing again. I tried saving the game and reloading the save but that didn't keep the settings either. :(

Anyone have this issue?

You guys seeing any performance improvements from 1.04 w/ Hairworks enabled? I'm not really seeing much.
GTX980 here.
I found that there is an ever so subtile improvement.
When I turn Foliage and Shadows to High I Can run Hairworks at 1080/60 with drops to the low 50s in dense forests and/or fighting against wolves.
Slightly OCing my GPU helped to improve that even further, giving me some additional Frames at time so the game stays smooth.
Hairworks AA set to 4 btw.

Looks like my days of playing the game are over until there's another patch or Nvidia updates their broken driver. After the 1.04 update I'm unable to get into the game for more than 30 secs. It will either kick me back to the desktop or reboot my PC completely. I have installed and uninstalled every driver released since Nov 2014. same results. I have tried to get this game going at least 20-30 times. Oh well, The game was great while it lasted.

I don't think so. Performance should be the same.

Make sure your game isn't defaulting to Borderless Windowed. Sometimes it has a habit of doing that for me

Also, the Pansaonic AX800 uses a technique called DisplayPort MST to achieve 60Hz at 4K. MST is heavily dependent on drivers and there may be an SLI issue here. If you're getting basically half the performance, it sounds like your second GPU may not be doing anything. Can you run through HDMI instead? Not sure if that display supports HDMI 2.0.

Thanks to whoever suggested antimicro for mapping the home button on the pad, works with my x1 pad. Great to use a shortcut for the map especially when you're not using the minimap.

-nah screw not using the minimap, way too difficult to navigate.

I ended up setting it to select Quen so that it cuts out some of the ability selecting when it runs out or you get hit, since you basically always need it up.

You guys using FXAA from the NCP or just sticking with the in game AA?

I like in-game AA. FXAA doesn't take care of the temporal aliasing and I see a lot of shimmer on moving objects/foliage. People have different tolerances/sensitivities though, so you might not notice or care. FXAA is certainly less taxing on your system. In-game AA seems to cost ~5 fps.

I can see that I am not the only person with a GTX 970 that wasn't getting 60fps on Ultra. The game averaged out 43fps and bounced around between 30 and 60. I ended up just locking the game to 30fps.

Regardless the game is impressive. Is this game the best graphical game released so far?

So I have everything on ultra locked at 30 FPS except for foliage view distance and I have hairworks off (even though it's only a 3 or 4 FPS loss even with furry animals on-screen, but that's too much when it's already at 30) and I'm pretty happy with that on a 770. Have chromatic aberration, bloom and vignetting turned off though but I don't know how much those actually affect performance.

Game is beautiful though, and while I'd love to run it at 60FPS, I'd have to turn stuff down too much to achieve a steady 60. I'll also echo the "holy shit does my GPU run hot" statements. 770 is running at 77c average during play. But I guess that also proves that the game isn't particularly CPU bound. :p

I also apologize for the durability warning icon, wish H was the hide HUD button like it was for Witcher 2. :p

I also really hope someone can chime in on the graphical thing that's happening on Geralt and the slab of stone, I'm not sure if that's a sign of something wrong with my GPU or some weird graphical bug in the game. I only ever notice it in cutscenes though, and it's not always present in them.

You should be able to get near flawless 60fps in most places if you turn off Hairworks and turn grass density and foliage distance down to high

Try changing the user settings in your documents folder. I managed to fix a few things in there, not sure if it'll work in your case.

Ok, finally time to add my hat into the ring.

i5 2500k
780 GTX OC'd to GPU 1047MHz, MEM 1592MHz
8GB of RAM
SDD

So I can get it somewhat locked to 1080p60 at a mix of High and Medium, but it fluctuates too much to sub 50fps, and for me is way too noticeable.

So, instead, I have EVERYTHING on Ultra, Hair completely off.
I can get 1080p30 rock solid in Borderless Windowed.

I have it locked to 30fps through Precision X. SO BEAUTIFUL.

Anyone have a fix for Geralt's sluggish responsiveness when just walking around? Positioning him to navigate environmental obstacles or when looting can be a total pain at times.

I think Patch 1.04 broke the "9999 Weight" Mod.

I went over 130 and Geralt became uncumbered.

Is there a weight and unlimited oil mod that work with 1.04?

So, re: imported saves vs simulated saves, do we know yet if, in the import case, there are more flags being checked than the 5 questions asked during the simulation dialogue?

I mean, other than the Blue Stripes tattoo, obviously.

Mentioned this in the main thread but I found a letter in Oxenfurt that referenced (tiny Witcher 2 sidequest spoiler)
the two chemists in Flotsam that offer Geralt the experimental drug.
.

Don't know if that pops for everyone or only if you have a Witcher 2 save where you took that action.
