Do we expect Splatoon to be the next major Nintendo I.P.?

Splatoon is going to easily hit 1 million and it won´t stop there. Its the first game I actually think has the potential to be the Wii U killer app, lets see how it goes.

If Splatoon became a killer app for Wii U, what a wonderful story that would be. Nintendo finally making a new IP, actually promoting it, and it becomes a hit. Naturally, I'm doubtful at how popular it actually could get (since it's on Wii U), but what a fairy tale ending that would be.

Kinda makes me wish Club Nintendo was around right now and they could do another free game promotion like they did last year with Mario Kart 8. That got people to come out of the woodwork.

i believe part of the reason they went with a new IP is because people usually say they just release sequels and don't do new games often.

the sucess or failure will be a turning point for Nintendo. if it suceeds, it means they can make big-budget new IPs that can actually suceed and we can get new series tailored for new gameplay instead of trying to change old series with new gameplay.
if it fails, it will just prove that people are content with the same series as usual and that the endless Mario spinoffs are a better decision than new IPs.

i really want it to suceed to see a lot of people eating crow.

sucess is gonna be tricky given the Wii U holding back the game.

I agree.
Whatever will happen with the Software Output in the next Gen: This Game's Commercial Success will have a huge impact on it.

Had it been on the Wii I think it would have been a massive success. The Wii U is really holding it back, but I hope it'll still do well. Definitely better than W101

Liiiike... Wii Sports?

Edit: For clarification, I'm not saying that Splatoon will be a Wii Sports level hit, just that the idea that Nintendo makes and markets a new IP that does well isn't a new or even rare concept at all.

I see them staying on the assist trophy level of Nintendo franchises, but I would love to be proven wrong.

well, interest on it is already far bigger than what F-Zero ever had in the years it was alive and even that got a fighter in (and in the original SSB)

the inklings are gonna be the most likely newcomer of SSB5 if they don't already become part of the roster in SSB4 DLC.

That's a lot of fan art generated for something "assist trophy level".

Gaging potential franchise popularity by how much fan art it produces is a bogus barometer IMO.

Fan art is made my a minority of people online, who happen to be heavily invested/attracted to said IP. It only means that it resonated with a miniscule segment of the audience.

I think it remains to be seen if Splatoon will be something with any staying power.

Well, there's more factual data in looking at fan art response than there is making an opinion on a hunch, so......... yeah.......

Fan art's a shaky ruler because it more accurately reflects interest in the visuals than in the game itself. There are most likely a number of people who have no plans to play the game, but are attracted to the color and character design.

Why do people keep calling this a FPS??

COME on! Third person shooter, first person shooter. I find it genuinely amusing that people see an appreciable difference between the two. At the end of the day the goal of the game is to shoot things until you win. This does not meet the demand of the current market which says games need to be an outlet for children to express their latent creative genius. The sales performance and hype surrounding games like Minecraft and Kerbal Space Program aren't something that should be ignored.

edit: if fan art could be considered a valid metric to predict or measure the success of something, Sonic the Hedgehog must be huge.

While I agree fanart is a shaky barometer, we have to stop pretending it's the only only sign of interest in Splatoon. There's genuine interest in the product beyond that; it's got a good buzz online, reactions to its E3 booth and test fires have been positive and mini communities are already forming. Hell, just look at how many threads it's spawned on GAF despite being a new and currently unreleased IP.

I feel this thread is very much a replay of Bloodborne prerelease; a whole bunch of people refusing to believe that online buzz will translate to real world sales, despite evidence to the contrary.

To be fair, they do have Mario Maker coming out this year. And people do tend to like dress up in games, which Splatoon certainly has.

Actualy, I would be pretty interested to see the data about kids playing Kerbal. Minecraft I know has a kid audience, but Kerbal up until this point has mainly been the domain of older 20-something males streaming, afaik - but it was in beta up until this point, so that may have changed since launch.

I am glad there's a current strong desire for lego sandbox creative games, but I somehow doubt this removes the possibility for all colourful mascot games from the market. In fact, even with their strong performance (mainly spearheaded by Minecraft), I'd say that creativity-based games are still the outlier overall...

Even though I think it will bomb I also see potential for it to be a killer app. Maybe all of Nintendo failed attemps with Wii U made me a bit pessimistic.

The concept is okay but I don't think it'll be the mariokart of shooting game or anything close. The TV marketing is also meh so I don't expect it to sell to well. That is unless people really are craving an online shooter on the Wii U.

They need a Splatoon 2 just so they can have a commercial that goes "Splatoon T-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-two!"

Never underestimate a thisty man in the desert.

I have no doubt this will sell well, even Tomodatchi Life sold gangbusters here in NA.

If this game has truly attained the level of "this is the new Nintendo game" status the hype threads here on Gaf want us to believe, we will never hear the end of it.

Just read this game is 60 fps, a that is awesome.

Nintendo is really kiling it on framerate this gen, good on them.

Nintendo's gonna want more than that, seeing as they consider it above most other franchises. They're gonna get a dedicated playable character in Smash (not just the Mii costumes), it's inevitable. The question is when. Even if Sakurai may not want them (which I somehow doubt since a new IP made by Nintendo EAD would be a goldmine for him), Nintendo's gonna mandate them to promote the IP.

Put it this way, we got Shulk in Smash, a character from a franchise that only got by based on critical acclaim & cult popularity (for reference, Xenoblade is my 3rd favorite game of all time). We're gonna get the Inklings. Plus Nintendo wouldn't give Amiibos to a franchise they only consider to be assist trophy-tier.

Judging by the amount of advertising and attention it's getting I feel pretty comfortable guessing it'll do at least a million lifetime.

With the amount of advertising this game gets, I'd say Splatoon would get as much recognition as Pikmin or Kid Icarus assuming of course the game doesn't totally tank in sales.

May 29th. As long as you pre-ordered at Gamestop.

It looks like the game is legit, and it's arguably the coolest Nintendo title seen in recent memories.

I believe it will be quite big. Not a phenomenon like MK or Smash, but big enough to surprise sceptics.

Gotta say - I hadn't been paying attention to this and my while first reaction to the trailer was that the character designs were quite generic, having finished the trailer I'm pretty intrigued. Looks like it could be a lot of fun.

Still, I wouldn't necessarily anticipate this doing very well given that it's a new IP on the Wii U. But who knows?

Generic? Can you possibly point to other games that have similar character models, because I'm really not seeing that.
