Fallout 4 Speculation Thread - Graphic talk elsewhere please.

If TD is right, I really hope there is an option to play as the mother as well as the father. 2070s Falloutverse can handle the 'anachronism' of having a female Vault sales rep.

I'd like both as well, it's possible they only had male voice work done or it was placeholder and you can play as both now.

I just hope that we are all completely wrong and the leaks were deliberate misdirection to get people in a tizzy.

That said, I think the best way they could handle it is you being that baby. Game starts before the War, you select your appearance, gender, and SPECIAL. The War starts and your parents take you and your puppy to the Vault where you are put into cryosleep until like 20 years before the start of the game for some reason. Malfunction maybe, timed release. Point being you exit the Vault as an adult to find supplies like the beginning of Fallout 1.

I sort of posted in one of the other threads earlier but had to run out.

I don't normally do this, but I've been a GAF member for years now so I hope you will understand when I say this stuff I understand the account repercussions and am confident that what I have been told is true.

This is not speculation:

Your character is the father in the trailer (also seen at the end). You work for Vault-Tec before the nukes go off, selling spots in Vaults to other people. Once the nukes start going off you go to your vault, which has cryo-freezing. You wake up from cryo-sleep to discover your families pods are already vacant (they're gone). So the main purpose of leaving the vault is, as a father, to find your family. A reverse of the situation from Fallout 3 where you were looking for your father.

Feel free to doubt me if you want. I'm not going to provide more, but I am confident that eventually I'll be proven correct.

They better have one hell of a writing staff crafting a really top quality award winning main plot because if not that's one shitty excuse for cutting out playable female MC.

Horse Detective

Why the long case?
Some thoughts:

- Cool that the Pip Boy appears to be powered by a micro fusion cell... Looks like it? Even if just by aesthetic.

-Holy shit, possible armors and weapon customization at the garage? I mean, it implies that right? The laser rifle is near all those weird parts?

- Ghoul redesign is fucking awesome. I remember the eyes only glowing in a mod I installed.

- Does the eye bot imply a presence of the Enclave, or is it likely the Brotherhood is using them?

I think hs thread should be more clearly marked as having potential spoilers.

While the leak some of you are talking about might be rubbish, there's still a chance that massive spoilers are being openly discussed here. I wanted to speculate on what we saw in the trailer, not potentially get major plot points ruined etc.

Horse Detective

Why the long case?
Given the validity of spoilers so far, I agree that it needs to stop at this point. There really isn't a reason for it now, and to be honest there wasn't a reason for it before either.

I'm very curious as to what time period this game is set in

If Three Dog is still in it, which by all accounts he seems to be, then I doubt it's that many years after FO3/NV. I'd prefer it be parallel to NV as they were already 200+ years after the Great War and Nukes dropping. Global Nuclear Annihilation is a bitch and all that, but humanity can only stay in ruins for so long. Especially with so much old world tech around and knowledge in isolated pockets.

I mean we already have the NCR rebuilding the whole West Coast. Caesar's Legions ostensibly pacified most of the rest of the SE, even if it was primitive in nature. Who knows how sophisticated the Commonwealth is and if the Institute aids in that.

The further out we get from the Great War the less wastelandy frontiersy we get. So I can't imagine they'd jump ahead another few decades as previous titles have.

BTW, why is there speculation pertaining Obsidian's involvement? Weren't they wholly dedicated to their own kickstarter project (plus they have been much more interested in a SW RPG) and this project (according to IGN) has been in development for the last 4 years?

No, pretty much all we have is the trailer right now. I guess all additional information will be shared at E3.

Thanks.

The art direction caught my attention the most, but that scene was probably the next most memorable for me. Leagues better than FO3/NV.

I like that there's more color in the game than FO3. Looks like Bethesda finally realized that Fallout is not about the wasteland, but the recovery (and forces that oppose it). We see a wasteland where there have been significant improvements to life in the wastes - as it should be.

There is colour and then there's eye popping colour that makes it looks too edgy (like those instagram filters). It feels aesthetically opposed to what came before it.

Bruh, lets talk about those animations those ghouls had in that grocery store with the shopping carts.

Those animations looks like the idtech animations from Rage with the enemies reacting to their surroundings, aka, the feral ghoul knocking over a shopping cart and another ghoul reacts to the shopping cart when bumping into it.

The animations looked really smooth and fast paced and such.

It looked so good.

Man I can't wait to see what the modding community will do with this game.

Very interesting read. Some good things in there that I'm looking forward, but some questionable decisions as well. I typically dismiss these kinds of things, but seeing as a lot of that is on point so far I'm inclined to believe it. That being said, this person was fired from Bethesda, so it's possible some things have changed since then and it's also possible there's some false information in here.

She could be bullshitting too. Her "leaks" came after the Kotaku casting leaks so she probably just extrapolated.

For you.
And if it turns out to be the case, both camps will have to get over it, not buy it, or play on PC and hope someone makes a conversion mod. All three are valid, rational reactions. I have a suspicion that we'll get more of the "frothing, hyperbolic outrage" variety though :\

Outrage is completely warranted though, especially when one of the fucking defining points of this franchise is customizing your character and make your own story. Start locking out options, make a convuleted plot that's way too specific to the protagonist (instead of making it vague like it should be), putting VA on the protagonist limiting the ammount of dialogue present in the game...

Well, that's bound to be absolute shit. Outrage is quite warranted if this is really the case.

Not having a female MC option would be a shame for a multitude of reasons, but an extra shame in that playing a mother going on a quest to find her family in a video game plot is a bit more unique. The father/missing family plot gets used a lot more. (Also, Black Widow perk!)

I would be genuinely surprised if they'd taken the option away, though.

Right I forgot about Three Dog. It could also be possible that this takes place before Fallout 3. I don't know the voice actors age but certainly 20 years prior to F3 wouldn't be out of the question.

Everyone that falls for this Reddit rumor seems to miss the line "brand new engine" and "no assets/scripts shared with Skyrim" etc. That already debunks it because FO4 is clearly on the creation engine. There's also a few other things in there that dont make sense.

And everything that has been "confirmed" so far is something literally everyone could've easily guessed. Reveal in June 2015 when E3 is happening? Yea, I said that to my friends months ago. Main character is voiced? Kotaku leak. Boston setting? There were rumors about that way before the Reddit post went up.

Just don't believe everything you read online guys.

I gotta agree with this. ONe of hte biggest cases I have for Bethesda games over the Witcher when people say that Witcher does everything better is that no, it doesn't. Because Bethesda games do a better "create your own story" games. In fact I have yet to see any other company do a live action RPG that pretty much has the computer simulate a games master and make you come up with your character, how he or she deals with the world, and how he or she solves problems (to the extent that they try to give you as many options as possible to do a quest). No, they're not perfect by far (and I will agree Witcher does their aim better than Bethesda does theirs. But that doesn't mean Witcher does everything better. Bethesda by far lets you solve problems however you like better because that's more what they are aimed at. Witcher is more "pick which solution you think is best". Not, "hey, just kill them all if you like or if your character is a total psycho". You can't even kill most NPCs in Witcher unless the story calls for it).

But not letting you create your own character... well that would be a huge dent in what they actually do do well. I would totally agree with the outrage if they got rid of that. I'm already not that happy the character gets voiced, even if they give a female voice option. 1. That ruins immersion for the kind of games they put off (I usually like to pretend it's how I would deal with that world). 2. It most likely will lesson dialogue options (more money to have to pay for each line made.

Yeah, after reading that part again, that really seems to be off. And it would be something that someone actually involved with the game would not mess up.

Yeah, she'd be in legal trouble if this was real. Plus we already knew about the whole Boston setting as well as one of the returning characters from other leaks, so I'm skeptical.

Yeah, I guess I can see Bethesda doing this if you're thinking along the lines of making the game even more accessible and mainstream friendly.

But it also seems to go against a huge element of what sets Bethesda games apart- namely, tons of freedom and that starts with character creation. So limiting the PC to a set protagonist basically better mean a great main story, but then again, who plays a Bethesda game to rush through the main story anyway? That just seems crazy to me that they'd do something like a fixed gender, voiced PC when that seems more likely to just hamstring people's ability to enjoy the freedom of the open world.

Sure, you could cook up a lot of those details from the Kotaku leak and a bit of extrapolation. I can totally see Bethesda trying to PR speak and spin the engine that Fallout 4 uses as being a "new" engine though. Just like they tried to sell people on the idea that the Creation engine was something totally new and different than the same Gamebryo foundation they've always been using.

That said, the Kotaku leak seems awfully legit, which with the whole locked in, set protagonist aspect is worrisome enough for me.

I don't know how it make it more mainstream accessible. Skyrim certainly had no issues selling to a broad audience with gender options and a silent protag. They must have a lot of faith in this story to go this far, if this is actually the case, but that doesn't exactly give me a lot of confidence given their writing in every other game of theirs being passable at best.

If they really are cutting out female MCs and going for this story driven experience they better have some LoU level shit going on or else it'll be a waste. As you say the biggest draw for their games is the freedom to just go out and explore and take part in a huge number of quests and adventures in any manner you want. Having a fixed protag seems very much in conflict with that.

I really REALLY can't see Bethesda making the MC so restricted. It goes against their "be who you want, do what you want" attitude toward their games. Maybe the flashbacks were a prologue or memories of a previous character whose memories were later installed into an android who you then play as...

I'm not real crazy about the voiced protagonist either, and one who might have a family too? That's making the character not much of a blank slate. What about those who want to roleplay gay/lesbian characters? I'm just going by what everyone else is hypothesizing though. To me, it looked like the husband/wife/baby died in the nuclear blast before they could get into the vault.

Still, I like what I saw. And that dog was so cute! He looks like he has a lot of personality. Waiting to see what E3 brings.

I seriously think we won't be able to customize the character. The protagonist in the trailer looks exactly the same (including hair style and everything) as the guy in the Kotaku's leaked scripts. The protagonist at the end also looks exactly like the father at the beginning in the pre-war flashback with the baby, so the protagonist may be the son, so to go along with having a voice I think the character predefined.

I hope that October release date is true at the very least BUT I'm not so kin on the idea of Behaviour Interactive making a Fallout game not only because it's not Obsidian Entertainment making one but also because Behaviour Interactive has a long history of just making licensed games which doesn't fill me with confidence about a quality Fallout game being developed and released by them just 1 year later after Fallout 4 since I don't want another Fallout Tactics scenario.

That all sounds very legit now.

Short end of it: Male protag only "during the story" but then at some point, you can switch genders after the story elements.

I think that Bethesda fucked up here. They should have done both male/female voice casting.

3 and New Vegas were very good at including actual names of monuments and surrounding towns of their respective main cities (NV especially), and as far as I know the name Fenway doesn't have any corporate connections.

I'd bet it's gonna be in the game as Fenway Park. Or at least referencing the name Fenway.

See I don't think that Bethesda is so tone deaf "politically" (for lack of a better term) to just include such an option as a replacement to simply allowing you to play as a female from the start.

Oh god. That weird thing of PS4 before PS3 means the crazy cross-gen confusion from the CSS mentioning all plats, but only having pre-orders for current-gen makes sense.

It's never going away now.

With the "Grand Diversity of Voices" Bethesda Games are well known to have I'm surprised they even bothered to voice cast 1 gender and not simply have a mute MC again.

Speculation: I will skip the main plot for months and instead travel the wastes as a Dick Dastardly lookalike with a hunting rifle, trusting nobody, sleeping in tents that are not owned by NPCs.
