I view the gaming industry in 2 categories: Nintendo and Everyone else. While most my hype is reserved for what Nintendo brings to the table (and I have already outlined what I believe they will announce), I will now list what my irrational hopes and expectations are from the rest of the gaming industry during E3 2015:
PS4, Xbox One, and PC are kinda viewed by me as the same conglomerate as they all three pretty much share the same library of games (save for first party titles like Sunset Overdrive, Uncharted, Bloodborne etc. I've never really had much interest in) so this is what I expect from the "rest" of the gaming industry that would get me excited to play on something other than my WiiU or 3DS:
- Dishonored 2 officially revealed. Will make the switch to a completely open-world albeit at a scale much smaller than what is standard in the industry today. The world will still be quite big, mind you, but will be extremely detailed and be full of interesting things to do, places to explore etc. Small rat vents and sewer systems will be heavily intergrated into the world and the game will retain its endearing novelty of being able to uncover new areas and complete missions in a number of different ways. Navigating the city will be a much more accessible experience and Korvo will be able to scale every building and teleport on to any edge within range. Mana will be done-away with in light of a cooldown system for all of Korvo's abilities. Most all abilities (possession, wind gust, slow time) will be available in basic weak forms at the start of the game and the player will have the ability to level them up as he desires. Rune collecting as a means to level up abilities will stay, albeit with much more cleverly hidden runes in the world. Have runes locked behind side-quests, enviornmental puzzles, and in areas un-accessible to the player until he/she obtains certain power upgrades. The possession ability now has the added functionality of being able to use the victim's voice in dialogue with other NPCs, opening up the possibilities to resolve conflicts in a different ways (not necessarily non-violent ways though as you could potentially possess powerful people and select dialogue options that could cause deaths, arrests, executions etc.) Also an online mode would be pretty cool, not with the standard team deathmatch tropes, but perhaps with a more spies vs. mercs twist. Or maybe a mode where 2 assassins are tasked with killing the same target but must start at 2 different places that would require 2 different routes (the rooftops, the sewers) Being detected would force the player to start over at the beginning and whoever kills the target first wins. Players could use their powers to manipulate the activity of the guards and maybe do things that would re-direct NPC's attention to the route that the other assassin is on. After typing this I see a lot of balancing issues and gameplay tweaks that would be needed in this mode and i can humbly admit its probably a stupid idea, but what am I going to do? Delete all this shit? Nah
- Timesplitters HD collection officially announced. After being impressed with that small group (forget the name) of fans' efforts in remastering the franchise, Crytek has taken back reigns over production and will release the collection for PS4/Xbone/PC. Will feature a single online mode consisting of all the maps, character skins, and weapons found in both 2 and 3 and will have custom servers as opposed to the standard matchmaking fare (A game as highly customizable and crazy as Timesplitters wouldn't work in a standard matchmaking way, it would be best for hosts to create their own matches with their own rules and weapon sets and leave it to the player to decide which available matches most fits their tastes) Also, with it being current-gen and PC exclusive, all versions of the game will feature 4-player splitscreen at 60 fps and will have the option available to take all three your local friends into an online game. It won't be too graphics-intensive, really just a 1080p 60 fps version of the originals, but it will be good enough.
- Mass Effect 4 will be awesome. Everything they teased and promised about the next iteration of the franchise seems to be real. A giant galaxy to explore with 100s of hours worth of content. There will be a single player campaign to finish, but the game won't end upon its completion. It will be more like Skyrim in that there will be a myriad of other things to do (factions to join, engaging side-quests) after the game is done. Party members aren't restricted to the 10 or so developed characters as was the case in the original trilogy, rather there are roughly thousands of procedurally developed characters, with quasi-procedurally developed backstories, living throughout the galaxy, that you can potentially enlist into your command. Some would be harder to obtain than others and many would be locked behind large quest lines. For instance, In a hypothetical quest to get an Asari agent in your party: The structure would remain largely the same for all players but the look, gender, and skillset of the Asari would be different for each player, as would the locations required to reach in order to complete the mission. The result would be each player having their own unique squad, tailored to their unique playstyles. The game world would also be designed around a huge online component and, while not quite like a MMO in which players would run into eachother in their own unique journeys through the galaxy, you would still be able to meet with other players in HUB like sections of the galaxy (the Citadel) and be able to trade items, guns, armor, and party members with other players. The effects of what other players are doing in their own games would have an effect on your own experience. For example, the game world would be largely structured around the numerous factions players are capable of joining. If the majority of the players in your certain server have alligned with a certain faction, that faction will have more power and influence in your game world. They would control more bases, more space stations, more Mass Effect relays used for fast travel etc. A player with a low-to-bad to reputation with these factions would then be faced with a high-fee to pass or to access the area or, if the relationship is bad enough, might be left with no other choice than to push through with combat or sneak by with stealth. Online squad gameplay would still remain as a Co-op affair (trying to balance everybody's bionics and weaponsets seems too exhaustive of an effort to actually work) but players would be able to enter matches with 2 squad members at the their command and team up with 4 other players (each with 2 squad members at their command) from the same faction in a battle against increasingly difficult waves of enemies. These matches would take place on huge battlefields and players would have the ability to call in bombing runs from their ships, weapon-drops etc. The results of these battles would influence the game world of every player in the server.
- Jade Empire 2 announced for PS4, Xbone, PC. With Disney acquiring Star Wars and with their decision to all but ignore/retcon the Old Republic era from canon, my hopes for a proper KOTOR 3 is all but diminished. Bioware/EA has taken the core KOTOR/Jade Empire gameplay and evolved it into an entirely different beast now known as Mass Effect, but there is still a hole in my heart left yearning for a traditional Bioware WRPG of days past. With Jade Empire, however, there is still a chance for them return to form. I pretty much want a KOTOR 3 from them, sure, but if a mystical story set in feudal japan is all I can get, I'll take it. Make it beautiful, make it epic, give it an engaging story with engaging characters. The combat system in Jade Empire, while blatantly broken and unbalanced, has a lot of promise. There's a lot that can be done with the franchise and would pee my pants if a proper sequel was announced.
-Last but not least, a proper and well-developed next-gen Spiderman, not tied to any movie release past or present. I want there to be a game featuring Spiderman at its core in the same way Rocksteady developed the Arkham series. Make it open world, great combat, and most-importantly, great swinging that builds upon the near perfect mechanics introduced in Spiderman 2 for the PS2/GCN/XBOX era,
