Wild Hunt GOG + Steam sales breakdown (1.3M total)

Didn't realise GoG was so big. Love me some Steam, and its the platform I'll be picking the game up on, but love the fact that there is now more then one legit digital platform for consumers.

I've pretty much decided that GOG will be my main platform going forward. I am just sick of Steam's bloated, slow interface and the idea of DRM-free, always, and now a client with features I need and nothing more is a breath of fresh air.

There are a lot of places where retail is still big and Steam gets circumvented. Uplay, Rockstar, Origin - they will all bypass Steam when selling through retail in a lot of countries. And now GoG too.

Kudos to CDPR for releasing the numbers, i thought we would be on the dark about this.

Leading up to the The Witcher 3's launch i think that if anyone had said that the console versions would sell more than double what the PC version sold they would have get laughed out of the thread. At least that was the impression i had from the expectations i saw. Either way in the long run the PC version will surely end up selling more because of the environment and the insane sales it will have.

CDPR also deserves some merit for creating a fanbase of that size out of thin air on the PS4 at least.

Out of thin air? They had to spend as much money marketing the game to console players as they did making it to get the console sales numbers that they did. No thin air there, the marketing outlay was massive for the company.

I'm part of those GOG statistics.

Really happy for CD Projekt RED

So this game has to be well past 2M units sold already with a long tail ahead of it on PC.

Kudos to CDPR

EDIT: Apparently 4M? Holy shit.

I know, you misunderstand me, i saw the $35 million dollar marketing campaign budget. I just meant that they were an unknown quality to playstation players before and now they have a firmly stablished community there.

So the game started as strongly as it did on consoles, but should also have the legs that console games typically don't.

So basically, PC sales makes up about 33% of total sales? Console domination. 1.3 million copies seem relatively weak? What CDPR said about development of the game not being possible without consoles seem to be pretty accurate.

Disclosure: I bought PC version even though I have a PS4.

Game is sold almost equally on 3 available platforms. That is called choice. We would never know what numbers would be if game was still PC exclusive.

33% of sales that match front loaded consoles is pretty damn good.

Math.

700,000*$45 + 600,000*$55*.7 = $54,600,000
That's week two gross (not profit, but with digital should be close enough) on PC alone.
Game cost $32,000,000 to make and $35,000,000 to advertise (lion's share of which took console, since I didn't exactly see Conan O'Brien play the PC version).
Game would be profitable for GOG even if they stuck to PC only.

Oh GAF.

Everyone's jumping on the PC vs PS4 + other consoles comparison, when this was clearly intended by CDPR to show off the strength of GOGG vs Steam + other digital stores :D

This again? Yes, yes. Console domination. PC gaming is dead.

So tiresome.

Well yeah? What's suprising there? If you make a game with this magnitude, you need to sell it on all possible platforms.

Does anyone know how this translates into profit compared to the console versions?

The console versions are more expensive aren't they? But then don't MS/Sony get a cut?

Pretty surprised at the sales breakdown. Assumed a higher percentage of sales would be on PC. Looks like CDPR made the right decision in going more console centric this time around, lending to healthy sales all around. Any info on the percentage split between the Xbox One and PS4 versions?

I love how when people compare PC numbers, it's consoles vs rather than xbone vs PC or PS4 vs PC. you want to compare numbers ...do it properly rather than summing up two competing closed platforms vs PC.

30% cut for curators (Sony, MS, Valve) and then whatever goes to retail I believe.

GOG is 100% revenue I believe.

I seriously doubt many chose the GOG version because of DRM free idealism rather than it just being cheaper and more available across multiple retailers as opposed to the Steam version.

In any case, fantastic figures which shows that AAA games are more than viable on PC and fucking lol at people lumping PS4/X1 numbers to downplay the huge PC sales when otherwise they would see X1 and PS4 sales duking it out.

The PC version is the most profitable per copy (especially the 700k GOGG versions, obviously), but without knowing what the spread was between PS4 and the other console versions, it's tough to speculate which of the respective versions has earned them the most so far.

Given how frontloaded console sales often are, I foresee that the PC version will eventually outlast either console version. Steam sales, yo.

edit: though then they might counter that with a goty edition or witcher 1/2 remasters and witcher collections on PS4 and we're right back where were started. It's tougher and more expensive, but there's ways to get more money out of consoles in the long run as well.

Yes, but what's wrong with what I said?

This data shows that of the 4 million copies sold roughly 70% were on consoles. And that's a big percentage.

Even more surprising because the series was always associated with pc.

I didn't imply that the pc sales were bad, I just expressed amusement with the consoles ratio.

You have to realise that only a few gaffers are actually good people. The rest are assholes.

Have we know consoles numbers yet though?
All we know is that the game has sold 4 million copies in 2 weeks and PC version is around 1,3M of it. At least I'm confident that PC has outsold XB1 numbers.

UK first week: 2:1 PS4:XB1.
US May NPD: PS4 lead platform.
EU+RotW? Probably PS4 >>>>> XB1.

2:1 in the UK? That seems...unusual... The install base split here doesn't match that, and didn't Microsoft have exclusive marketing rights to the game?

We all know it's because of all the GOG codes ...

But, it's always good if a DRM free plattform comes out on top. I wish it would always be the case. Good job and congrats. I bought the game from the GOG store (had the W1+W2 preorder discount so it was a reasonable price). Client is beta but it runs great.

Picked this up directly through gog, but I would've gotten it on steam if galaxy wasn't available. Being able to auto update a game is pretty important to me, CD Project getting a bigger cut is nice too. Once galaxy actually doesn't have any problems importing the games I already have installed I'll probably use it more.

edit: I don't think the game has dropped out of the number 1 seller spot on GoG since it went up for preorder except for maybe when Tie Fighter showed up.
