Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

Grabbed by the Ghoulies on the Rare 30 disc is almost certainly running on an OG Xbox emulator inside the Xbox 360 emulator.

Think about it. Rare is not going to port GbtG to Xbox One when there's already a 360 emulator, and when the 360 was already capable of running GbtG via emulation.

Not only am I virtually certain it is possible, I fully expect to see it made available at some point, at least for some of the Xbox Originals series.

Shouldn't original Xbox games actually be easier to emulate on the xb1 since they're both x86? The BC on the 360 was kind of mediocre really with lots of spotty bugs.

Marble Blast Ultra isn't on the list! How can I submit it?

Nevermind, apparently it was delisted from Xbox Live a while ago. There seems to be a free PC port out there though.

Now regretting not redeeming every 360 Games With Gold title!

Hopefully all/most GWG end up supporting back-compat. Was really awesome to see Super Meat Boy just magically appear in my Xbox One games library :)

Do we have a list of confirmed but upcoming games like this?

They said "all their first party titles" excluding Kinect titles and titles that require peripherals.

They also showed Borderlands running which doesn't currently work as far as I can tell.

I did my best to list them here, with the peripheral/Kinect games excluded. This doesn't include XBLA games.

Also Peter Moore said that he was excited to see EA games be a part of the backwards compatibility. Hope we get more details from Peter on that.

So MS, Take Two, EA, Ubisoft and Bethesda are on board and are supporting it in some form.

We know Rainbow 6, Fallout 3, Borderlands and all MS first party titles are coming. I'd imagine if Ubi/TT/Beth are going to support it at all, they'd do it for all games, not pick and choose which ones. It's pretty much free money and makes no sense to deny games from being enabled.

I'm glad that it's all handled in the Xbox One UI. I think it's fair to guess it would've rebooted the console into a "360 mode" similar to Wii U where no other features are accessible.

As it is, It's pretty fucking elegant all things considered.

Especially since it means that suspend/resume, app switching (ties in with suspend), Xbox One guide, snap center, streaming, DVR, and screenshots all work from the get go.

I think even better than that, is to have the games in the same list as Xbox One games. It's so nice to have everything in one place (again, unlike the Wii U).

Limited titles. Download the games.

THIS IS NOT ACTUAL BACKWARD COMPATIBILITY!

When I buy a new iPhone, some games don't work and I need to re-download everything

Don't think anyone would say the iPhone is not backwards compatible

Even the king of BC -- Windows PCs -- use emulators like dosbox and compatability layers for BC

Microsoft would still take their storefront fee, but not an extra BC fee.

When you buy a BC compatible game, you're not buying a BC version of that game, you're buying THE GAME. You could then go sign in to a real 360 and download it like normal

Forgive me if there's been an article on how exactly MS achieved BC that I missed, but: do we know for a fact MS doesn't have to do some technical hocus pocus on an individual title basis to make a 360 game work on an Xbox One? That's what I mean about some back end cost: if MS has to write a little code for each title to make it work, then maybe what they're telling pubs is: with your go-ahead, we'll make your game work on the Xbox One. And every time someone runs it on an Xbox One, you give me a nickel (or whatever).

I have no idea if any of that is true, I'm just speculating why a pub might not be interested in allowing MS to add their game to the BC list.

The fact that they're putting the extra work in for the few games that use multi-disc is awesome.

I can't wait to replay Blue Dragon again!

It might also give a bit more love and exposure to some games that people might have slept on when they launched early in the 360's life.

I went out today and purchased the 360 version of Blue Dragon because I never really sat down and played my way through it.

EA Access would be perfect for those. Put em in the Vault!

It would be an easy basically free way to add the vault. I would not be surprised if that is exactly the plan. EA access could be one of the biggest bargains in the history of gaming if they do it.

So did they mention any possible pricing for selling 360 games on the xb1 store? I hope they'll do something akin to what Sony did with the PS2 games on the PS3 in that there will be a hard price of $10 that AFAIK no game has exceeded.

Yes, it really solves the emerging problem that EA is running out of games to put on EA Access. I think there are only 2 EA XB1 games not on the service: DA:I and BF:HL and Dragon Age is already announced for the vault this summer

Not bitter, just unsweetened
Imagine all these xbox 360 games that will be used for games with gold...

I'm hoping all the games they add to the compatibility list will make their way to the store, too. A lot of stuff i want to buy that i have physical copies of.

Top 10 list on Xbox Uservoice right now:

i924oru.png

They all got in there over Bioshock, New Vegas and Mass Effect 2. Madness.

I'm enjoying the optimism of all the people in this thread assuming that third-party publishers will approve their games for inclusion in this scheme. There is no incentive for them to do so.

DREAMS

huh? Instantly more purchases from those that want to play 360 games but don't have a 360 anymore.

Now i know you can download your games that you've digitally bought on the 360, but are they eventually going to let us purchase 360 games on the Xbox One Store as well?

Anybody else still having problems with games you own digitally not showing up in your ready to install tab?

I don't see Small Arms or Banjo Nuts and Bolts. What's even odder is that Nuts and Bolts prompts me for payment if I am looking at it on the Marketplace product page on live.xbox.com...even though it is in my download history. I was on the chat line with MS tech support for 3 hours yesterday and they were about as helpful as a screen door in a submarine.
