Sony was nervous about Horizon's female protagonist, did lots of focus testing

the hell? they forget about Beyond already? lol

i guess because it's robot dinos which definitely appeals a lot to the boys, but still, how silly.

I'd imagine those games were EXACTLY the reason why Sony were nervous.

Gotta admit, Horizon interested me. And I really like the protagonist design, too!

No need to worry. I think we're still at the point where female protagonists are so rare that the inclusion of one is actually a bonus in making a game distinct. And Sony have historically been one of the leading publishers in this regard, with Gravity Rush, 2 Beyond 2 Souls, Heavenly Sword, Primal, The Last of Us (sort of) and others.

Just design the character well and most of us are mature enough to not care if it's slightly outside the norm.

I hope further focus testing will lead that she stop comment everything on screen. Maybe my only negative point about the E3 peasentation.

Thought they did great! She fits verry well I to the roll from what we saw. I cannot wait to get this game, and im usually not interested in this type of genre. but the setting, the action, the graphics, the main character all look fantastic!

exellent job GG!

It's fucking Dinobots, I don't think any sane person in the world (or even some insane ones) would stop themselves from playing it because they don't like the protagonist.

Thankfully, the protagonist is awesome as well.

EDIT: What the fuck is up with the "ugly" thing? What are this guy's standards? She's absolutely beautiful. I was actually expecting maybe some "oh yeah of course this prehistory is gorgeous and looks like a model" complains.

You did good Guerrilla. Damn good.

They made the right choices in every aspect and I can't wait for this to be released.

I think she's one of the best female character designs I've seen in ages. I love how unique she looks, how she looks rugged and muscled, how she has fierce features and red hair. I love love love her design, don't change one thing Guerrilla Games.

These MEN know what's up.

I'm really glad they went forward with the decision, especially since she's not sexualized at all. You can tell they spent a lot of time on her design, and from what I've seen she looks like a great character.

It's hard to get from the context, but by "Internally" I think he means Sony, not Guerilla.

It's just some Japanese weirdness by Yoshida that we see here. They probably would be completely on board if she had schoolgirl minis or some such...

I'm glad they decided to go with it. I think she looks great and it's a breath of fresh air seeing a female in this role.

Makes me sad to see yoshida saying it :(

Alloy is one of the reason i liked the game, i insta fell in love with this character the moment i see it.

They did good.

I actually find it hilarious how closely this game resembles the concept art. The art looks ridiculous in a good way, and somehow they managed to translate it straight into a game. This is awesome!

I don't know what to say to anyone that has an issue with this design.

As a male, after playing Gone Home and some of Life is Strange, and years of Tomb Raider, I find I am wanting to play a young woman more often. Bring 'em on.

I'm definitely interested in playing a woman character more often in games, and I wish it wasn't such a rarity. Diversity is a great thing, and it'd be awful if focus testing had led them to go down a different path from their original vision.

For you.

Not sure that two games that bombed would exactly ease their mind :/. That said, very good on Sony for doing this. Game looks great and also does the protagonist. The only thing I hope is that she doesn't talk to herself alone as much as she did on the gameplay video because that was kinda jarring.

Sony, please stop worrying about this sort of thing.

I think the character design is great and it doesn't bother me in the slightest playing as a female. It's been good seeing more female leads in big games this E3

Now just do a little more focus testing so she doesn't make a Drake-style remark every ten seconds, and we might have ourselves a great character.

She feels very much like a real looking woman. She has a more normal look to the fantastical designs of other females in games. I find that very appealing.

Man she looks great and completely fits in with the world theme they have going.

I don't care that the protag is a woman, doesn't matter to me one bit. Glad that they are spreading out now though.

This game looks awesome, can't wait to play it.

could never
Not that it matters much but yeah she's pretty. Why having a female lead is a problem to some I'll never understand.

speaking of female protags, where the fuck is Gravity Rush 2? GR1 was such a fantastic (if half baked) game and dammit another game needs to get made!
Shu was just talking about it with Greg and Colin. Told then he'd played it a few days ago. He talked about how they're waiting for the right time to rereveal it. It was the same language he used about TLG when explaining why they waited so long, so it seems pretty obvious (along with his no more big first party Vita games remark this week) that it's a PS4 exclusive now.

I wish focus testing wasn't necessary and that artists/developers could just tell the stories they wanted to tell. Reality is that almost every game with a female lead has sold poorly IIRC, with the exception of Tomb Raider.

I actually like the design, my fiance' was disappointed since she wanted character creation Mass Effect/Bioware.

Amen. She is attractive visually, but so is her personality. She is extremely strong and brave, yet with a hint of vulnerability.
Do you want to protect her?

I think Shuhei knows exactly what he is doing with these "marketing tried to make us change it, but SCEWWS resisted" answers he is giving. Maybe to strengthen his own position after the reception is good like with Horizon or TLOU or because it gives cred on NeoGAF for sticking to your guns.
The chronology he talks about is clear: We developed it like we wanted, AND THEN they wanted us to change it but ultimately we didn't.

I can't have enough female lead characters. I want more!.

The last female protagonist that I liked was Nilin from Remember Me. Sadly the game was not very well received... :(

I wonder if they would be willing to admit they were worried about black main characters like when they're female.

Kinda Funny Games interview with Yoshida seemed to imply that it was still a project and that it was very playable already. Didnt want to comment on vita or ps4 as platform though

I don't like the design(not that she's ugly I just don't like it) and I would have liked to see what a non focus tested version looks like but I'm happy they went with it.

It's mostly marketing. They seem to be very conservative.

As the story says it was already in development and then marketing was concerned. Same as with them not liking that Ellie was in the foreground of The Last of Us boxart.

I get it, but right now it seems that female leads in media (especially tv and books) is really trendy right now. I think this is showing in the gaming world too, which is fantastic. I just really hope this isn't a temporary thing, that's all.

"She's a female lead character," he said. "That has always been the vision by the team, but we had a discussion. Is it risky to do a female character?"

The fact that this even merited a fucking discussion shows just how little progress the traditional big budget gaming console space has made in the last 30 years.

To paraphrase chris rock; "Well, I chose not to pander to stereotypes" - that's what you're supposed to do. What do you want, a cookie?

I'm glad TEH CJ wasn't a part of those focus groups...

She's a wonderful character and I hope they change nothing, especially the face. I wouldn't be surprised of we see some change there to make her conform with mainstream Western ideas of beauty.
