Will Sephiroth be the main villain in this game or will Square create a new villain especially for this remake.

I haven't seen him in the trailer, normally that guy is as iconic as Cloud, but he wasnt shown in that E3 trailer.

Well Aeris wasn't shown either and she's just as iconic.

You have to save something for winter man.

Imagine if "Director: Motomu Toriyama" popped up during the trailer...

JESUS. That would be terrible. An absolute hype-killer. I suppose they will announce his role as a scenario writer or so again later this year, though. Maybe that's his new project that was supposed to be revealed in 2015.

And a reference to Sephiroth did appear. In the puddle with Red XIII's feather (or a Phoenix Down, depending on what you think) there's a reflection of a statue of a One Winged Angel...

No. No no no no no no no.

They will be minor additions at best (supplements to the original plot), we're not going to see all of the crazy villains introduced in DoC, for example. There are too many products across different platforms (Before Crisis, DoC, Crisis Core, AC etc.) for them to bring all of the plots together - it will simply be small additions to flesh out locations etc present in the original game, IMO.

So an example might be that a vendor somewhere sells Banora apples (which are from Crisis Core, in a village on Mideel), something which wasn't in the original game.

To better describe the story of Aeris, I've brought some roses with me today.

No. No no no no no no no.

Compilation will have place in the remake. Stop freaking out or it'll suck out your enjoyment of the rest when it comes.

It exists, and you dont have to be happy about it. I am happy with compilation save for DoC, but that's the nature of opinions.

If its the DoC stuff your worried about, it won't be in, cause that's not in FF7 to begin with, so you don't have to worry about that game's elements being included.

Adam Boyes, head of third-party developer relations at PlayStation, told me at E3 that he’s known about Square’s Final Fantasy VII remake for a year.

Does this mean that the remake has been in the making for a year, minimum?

You don't know that for certain and it would suck some of my enjoyment out of the game.

The biggest tell for me is that the Buster Sword Cloud has in the trailer is the original one, not the one from the compilation.

What scares me about making it completely 1:1 is the fucking scope of that. Remember those forests that you just ran through before?

FFVII_Wutai_WM.jpg

Now they're a fully realized ecological system with actual trees, animals, rivers, ponds, etc. I just can't comprehend the magnitude of this project

We know the physical distance between Midgar and Junon, and Midgar and Kalm, from the trailer, so maybe someone who knows their shit could extrapolate the size of FFVII's planet or something, lol.

This was mentioned before. Kitase needed a break after directing Chrono Trigger, FFVI, FFVII, and FFVIII. Guess he was mentally exhausted after directing that many games in one stretch.

Source?

He was Event Director for the og game.

Motomu Toriyama was one of eight Event Planners for the original game, being in charge of the Honey Bee Inn / Don Corneo's Mansion section as well as the Submarine Chase section.

Confirmed is before the FFVII PC port to PS4 announcement at PSX last December. So 7+ months at least.

Right. It probably didn't start production until some time after Feb 2014 at the earliest--unless Kitase was being purposely sneaky about it:

Kitase said:
"I can honestly tell you I would love to do that," he replied. "If you simply ask me if I personally would like to do that, yes I would. Definitely. There's no lie about it. But you must believe me when I say it would take a lot to happen."

Ah, thanks for clarification. So...bizzarely he was in charge of some parts people loved so much yet are in such stark contrast to his XIII Trilogy...

Lol. Perhaps.

I hope Cloud has sharper facial features like he did here for some reason:

1868585-cloud_strife.jpg

In AC and a lot of other stuff he does look like Lightning and it bothered me a little bit.

IIRC, this specific image of Cloud was one of the first promo images for Advent Children's announcement, and they actually changed his facial features later on for the final movie. EDIT: actually I think this image is a fan-made mashup of the beta Advent Children model and Crisis Core's Zack.
But by virtue of being one of the first/most circulated images, you can find it everywhere on the 'net. There's also a metric ton of bootleg merchandise with the early/beta AC images on it.

A friend of mine is believes that Nomura is incapable of juggling between KHIII and FF7:Reunion at the same time.

I believe Tai Yasue can fill in Directorial duties when Nomura focuses on FF7:R, which should lessen the directorial role substantially, with Kitase and Nojima providing input on FF7:R as well.

Tai Yasue did co-directorial duties alongside Nomura on both Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, Re / Chain of Memories, and is also co-directing KHIII, so he has the credentials, and can assume full control if Nomura moves on to FF7:R full time.

[...]

Check this interview, where Tai says that Nomura's involvement didn't change much after his departure from FFXV, anyway, so it's not as if KH3 is occupying much time for him. Tai seems absolutly capable of doing the main directorial work while Nomura only gives a bit of creative input.

FFVIIR is his main focus, right now, I'm sure. Also Nomura seems to want to get it out as quickly as possible:

---

They should make Jun Akiyama the event director.

He worked on the first game too.
Dude, I SO hope that FFVIIR is the reason he's not on FFXV anymore. I really want to see him work on something. It's a bit of a shame that he left FFXV, but at least one game will be graced with his work.

Well it for sure is getting the maximum amount of attention now if it wasn't already. The amount of hype and positive feedback from the announcement is ludicrous and the official trailer is just shy of 8.4 million views already with a 98% thumbs up. The thirst is real.

Also, i'm sure Nomura and Square as a whole would absolutely love to have it done in 2017 to celebrate the 20 year anniversary. They will also make a fortune off special/limited edition bundles and such as well.

I dunno why but I really do get the sense that Kitase and Nomura are really trying to capture the essence of OG FFVII. I dont doubt the Compilation will be involved in some way but details in the trailer like Cloud wearing his original purple uniform, and the Easter eggs like the dolphin T shirt and 7th Heaven sign. And everything Nomura has said so far is really encouraging. I just have a good feeling. Or maybe I'm just consumed by the hype. Either way, choo choo!

Edit: and there is no way they are taking the death out, I'll bet my house on it. That's like taking out Meteor or Sephiroth. It's central to the games plot.

Pretty much confirms that Aerith's fate will be similar to that of FFVII. Not that people truly suspected otherwise.

I'm dreading voice acting forcing me to call her Aerith instead of Aeris. Damn them for using different names for NA and EU releases before! After 18 years of calling her Aeris this will be tough to adjust to...

Start now. Start right. This. Second.

I began the switch to saying "Aerith"/renaming her as such on replays back in 2009 in preparation for this Promised Day. By now seeing "Aeris" is awkward to me. You can make it work for you as well, but you must act fast.

I'm planning a replay when the port launches on PS4 and will definitely name her Aerith. I know that name was always the creator's intention, and it was mis-translated, so that definitely helps =)

I forgot about that... These are the kind of real world details that I forgot were so mindblowing at the time this game were new.

-rock music boss battle theme
The SNES Final Fantasies and Chrono Trigger had some pretty rock'n'roll-y boss music.

I'm sure the Compilation references will not "damage the remake". The Compilation was written in a way that it never contradicts FFVII in the first place. Deepground is supposed to be TOP SECRET. Genesis is in a coma during FFVII. Angeal is dead. I don't know why people think Genesis might somehow wake up to appear in the remake and somehow go unconscious again at the end.

For most references we will simply get mentions and pictures, those sorts of things. We might get appearances of minor characters that make sense like Cissnei, but I don't see why anyone would have a problem with those.

I'm so excited for the Remake!

But this quote from Nomura is worrying
Nomura said:
"we can't have these upgraded, beautiful 3D models of Cloud and Barrett, still lining up in a row, jumping forward to attack an enemy, then jumping back to wait for their next turn. That would be bizarre"
http://www.engadget.com/2015/06/17/final-fantasy-vii-remake-interview-e3-2015/

I think FFX was not Bizarre at all and should be the template for FFVIIR. The battle system was fast and no one complained about it being unrealistic. They could even copy the general game design. To me FFX is still the best example of a "Next gen style" final fantasy (one which features full scale 3D graphics, voice acting, ect).

I don't know where this notion of "people wont think it is realistic if video game characters take turns attacking" started. I would argue that people who play video games understand everything doesn't happen in real time, and its ok if you are using that time to select what you want to do.

Clearly the answer is a more fluid, turn based system. But I think S-E would rather make a game that looks "cool" when you show footage of it, and have been trying to make FF into an action game as a result, sadly. They want a game that will "sell" to the public, but FFVII will sell by its reputation alone, so I strongly disagree with changing the battle system into an action based system.

So as someone who has never played any FF, and knows nothing about the series. Will this be a good game to jump in? Are the games standalone or linked together?

Why? Why can we not have that, there is no reason that is 'bizarre'.

This game will be a 2017 game on a current generation hardware. Take your nostalgia goggles off for a minute, don't you think having 1997 design conventions in a 2017 game would be a little lacking?

They can be more creative than that, no that doesn't automatically mean it will be an Action RPG, they can go about this several ways.

Because even if they were written in a way that doesn't contradict the first game, they were still awful and unnecessary additions to the main game.

It'd be a great game to jump into. Don't worry, most Final Fantasy installments have nothing to do with one-another aside from lots of little franchise-wide lore staples, such as cute birds called chocobos that you can sometimes ride on and even race. That sort of thing. You're fine starting with VII!

XV will come out next year, that would also be a good starting point. None of the numbered games have anything to do with each other.

I'll for sure give this a shot. Tried to play FFVII on Vita, and it has just aged way to terribly for my taste.

Maybe I've missed it in this thread, but I don't think it's been talked about. Do you think they'll try to shoehorn in the connection to FFX at all? Is that still considered official canon?

Oh gosh, I hope they don't bother doing more than a cheeky piece of filler text or something. That whole thing has always struck me as goofball of a bad variety.

Then again, I loathe X-2 in general, so I admit my bias runs deep on that front. But it's just... I don't know. It's never sat right with me. Square's never really done anything with it, anyway, though, have they? Plus I wasn't even 100% on whether or not it was "yes, that's canon" or "this is a fun thing to think about and maybe happened!"

I honestly don't get too bogged down with canon stuff in the things I enjoy, anyway. But for some reason the VII/X thing has always rubbed me the wrong way.

I dont think a fast, updated turn based system would be lacking in 2017, especially with the over the top attacks, magic, effects, ect. It would be awesome honestly.

I hope it doesn't automatically mean an Action RPG because it sounds like Nomura is suggesting a real time system. Hopefully they can figure out a compromise.

Nomura said he wants to evolve the gameplay, not change the fundamentals.

I don't think it was anything more than Nojima surmising what might happen in a thousand years when people on Spira can travel to other planets.

I can't see them addressing it outside of the Ultimanias anyway. It's not something that could be easily shoehorned into FFVII's existing story.

No. I replay the game every couple of years, the combat system is still excellent to this day, it is the visuals alone that fail to hold up. I can only assume people saying 'Lol Nostalgia' have not played it since 1997. I have. These people are wrong.

I don't think it was anything more than Nojima surmising what might happen in a thousand years when people on Spira can travel to other planets.

It also directly affected the plots of Advent Children and Dirge of Cerberus, with Cid finding a collection of Spiran airships in some excavation.

In any case, I wouldn't expect anything blatant in this remake of the original game. The most we'll get is probably non-story-relevant Easter Eggs like the Auron cameo.

I doubt it.

From what I remember, Gaia is Spira 10,000 years in the future, or something along those lines.

So, maybe an easter egg, but the stories aren't directly connected in the sense that the player needs to know whilst playing.

It came from the nonsense story of FFX-2, so, take that as you will.

There's one thing they should change and that is random battles. We should always get a visual representation when enemies are close I think.
