Batman: Arkham Knight - Review Thread

Jesus christ, the second riddler challenge can frankly go fuck itself. 45 minutes I just wasted trying to do it and I still couldn't. It's making me really not like the batmobile attempting to do it because controlling it around tight spaces is a pain in the bum.

Is this the one where,
you have to go up a small wooden board make a jump then cross and make another jump to get the batmobile to the other side and turn on the power
?

Also annoyed me, but I just finished it. I find the batmobile is a pain to handle normally but in small spaces it's even worse!

Game is pretty damn good so far. It's more or less a bigger, much better looking version of City with a driveable batmobile. It's great, but I think it's also starting to feel a little too familiar at this point. Apart from the batmobile (that I don't really use anyway, I much prefer gliding around Gotham) it doesn't really feel as fresh as I'd hoped.

And I don't like whatever AA solution they're using on PS4 at all. The game looks way too soft.

Just finished downloading patch 1.02. Will leave the details below for anyone interested. It was another 3.5gb on top of the previous 3.5gb for the day one patch 1.01.

Stability fixes.
General gameplay, graphical, audio, UI and localization fixes.

Sooooooo....has ANYONE played this on XB1?? I don't care about resolution, I'm just curious if it runs at a nice, consistent 30 fps.

Anyone, GAF? Anyone? Sounds like everyone has the PS4 version.

YESSSS! Just to clarify, they aren't all batmobile based right?

A lot of them are, yes. The game is heavily structured around the Batmobile, there's no getting around it. But it also has plenty of regular riddles, including the same kind of cryptic visual puzzles of Asylum and City.

Harley Quinn.

Oh awesome! I was thought we'd get nothing, thanks for the info!

Really want that red hood dlc, but I'll wait for prices to drop after a while.

Hopes it runs well on my PC

i7 3770k
16gb ram
amd 7950 3gb

Unreal tends to be really well optimized, but I'll be damned if I don't want those beautiful rain and smoke effects :( I'm betting I should get a solid 1080p30fps without em tho

Looks great! I'm glad I got this free with that Nvidia card sale.Batman and The Witcher I guess I won't be going outside for the rest of this month.

I dont think the Xbox Version has ever been seen or played prior to release and they wont be sending out review code until release.

Awesome. I'm cool with the batmobile too, as long as everything isn't an obstacle course.

Haha, this thread went from being a review thread to an impressions/Q&A session. Well played.

Haha. True. At least this way people stop flinging crap at each other :D

Overall, which has more gameplay, on foot or Batmobile?

It's about 60/40 on-foot/Batmobile. You're rarely separated and the game expects you to make use of the Batmobile most of the time. It's an extension of the player in many ways, being at once a method of traversal, combat and puzzle-solving.

Oh yeah, I'm aware of that but lots of Gaffers are getting this game early, it seems. That's what I was asking about. There has to be someone out there who got the XB1 version early!

Was able to get the same frames from the Nvidia trailer. Bear in mind that both screens are from low quality footage, so should not be used for IQ comparison. The biggest differences seem to be lighting (including a much more pronounced volumetric light shaft on PC), denser fog and much stronger wind interaction with the cape.

Does Batman changes suit at some point in the game or am I going crazy because of the lighting?

Yes, there's no getting away from the fact that, for better or for worse depending on your viewpoint, the Batmobile is an integral part of the game and not just a token addition. It's to Rocksteady's credit that they've worked really hard to make it an important addition, but I can see why it might not be to everyone's tastes.

Even if you glide everywhere (and because you can launch yourself much higher, you can get around much faster than before) there's still a fair chunk of combat and also puzzle solving that requires use of the Batmobile. I'd definitely recommend upgrading two of the Batmobile features early on - one which steadies the aim of the cannon (because you will be using it a lot) and one which allows you to boost twice in quick succession rather than having a pause in between each boost. It's really hard to dodge some of the enemy fire later on without two quick boosts in a row.

I suppose it comes down to 'do you like driving games or not?', since there's a fair chunk of it. Personally, I'm happy with Chase HQ segments in my open world Metroid/MGS Batman game, and the simple act of driving around Gotham is a joy, because it's so well done. The sense of speed and inertia is superb.

not sure if this is old news by now, but I just read that all preorder dlc will be available later for season pass owners after their exclusivity deal is over in August/september. Good news, really didnt want to miss out on the red hood stuff

Also, people found out that if you got the game from NVidia, it does come with the harley quinn dlc and some skins. When I previously asked NVidia twice, they said it didnt come with anything both times

So yeah about 5 hours in with a healthy mix of side/story this feels very much like AC. There's some fresh air pumped in with the bat mobile but its implementation is far from amazing. Think near perfect scores are absurd based on what I've played. It's pretty good, but not that good. Gotham is still kinda lifeless while there's a huge amount of thugs on the ground and in cars their interaction is still as one dimensional as in AC. Seems like a by the numbers final chapter of a game series that has run its course.

Another comparison with the original game reveal. Skin shading shows a marked improvement. LOD has taken a hit. The rest is probably attributed to changes in light placement. Ignoring IQ differences for now as one is essentially a marketing bullshot and the other is from compressed-to-hell-and-back PS4 footage

To anyone who has this game, can the buttons be remapped? I own a PS4 and played the previous Arkham games -- both Asylum and City -- using the PS3 button layout.

I understand that the quickfire gadgets are now located on the L2 button to compensate for the batmobile. There's a toggle function that allows the batmobile to stay in battle mode without having to hold down the button. What options are there in controller configuration?

Doesn't the ps4 have that feature in it setting?

The quickfire button was on the L1 button of the PS3 controller for Asylum and City. But according to several reviews, quickfire is now located on the L2 button instead. No one who's gotten the game has comment on whether or not you can map out the controls to their liking. I'm really hoping that the game will have the option to set the button layout that is more in line with Playstation controllers instead of the Xbox controllers.

Xbox always has preloads up like way early. Seems like it might be tied to their preorder policies, IIRC a lot of third party digital games don't go up for preorder until a preload period starts.
