Marisa Tomei to Play Aunt May in New ‘Spider-Man’ Movie

Now that Marvel and Sony have found their Peter Parker, the focus has turned to the aunt who raised him.

Sources tell Variety that Marisa Tomei is the choice to play Aunt May in the next installment of the “Spider-Man” franchise.

Sony and Marvel had no comment on the casting.

While insiders could not say where things stood in the deal-making process, they have added that an offer was made late last week for the Oscar-winning actress to join Tom Holland, who was recently tapped to play the web-slinging superhero.

Marvel and Sony recently hand-picked Holland to play Spider-Man after months of meetings and screen tests with eager young actors, in addition to selecting “Cop Car” helmer Jon Watts to direct the pic.

The studios are still in the process of finding a writer to join Watts in the screenwriting process but insiders explained that the top brass also wanted to lock down other actors who would appear in multiple films so schedules could be worked out before shooting commences next year.

Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal will produce the pic, and though Holland is expected to first appear in “Captain America: Civil War” in a cameo appearance as Parker, it seems more likely that Tomei will not appear until the first “Spider-Man” film bows on July 28, 2017.

I guess I'm ok with this. Seems a bit odd at first glance, but makes sense when you think about it. Like, why was Aunt May an old, white haired granny to begin with? That would imply that her sister was a good 30 years younger than her or something. Makes sense she'd be about 20-30 years older than Peter.

It never made sense to me that Peter's father's sister was this ancient, decrepit looking old woman. She should have looked much younger.

and now we can finally make that Aunt May spy movie!

If they're going for the Ultimate Spider-man version, she's a good pick.

Actually looks like they're trying to make a film version of the Disney XD Spiderman series. Caught some of that on Netflix, it's pretty good, so if they get anywhere near that, it'll be amazing.

My gut's telling me that they're going for a more Ultimate Spider-Man (comic) approach with this, which I don't mind at all.

Yeeeeeah, I wouldn't call the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon as anything that Marvel should use as reference for anything. Is it decent as of Season 3, sure, but it's nothing to brag home about. Spectacular Spider-Man would be a better reference point as far as Spidey cartoons go.

Spectacular.

I remember making jokes regarding Spectacular Spider-Man's Aunt May looking a lot like Gwen, and that Peter sub-consciously drawn to her because of that. LOL!

I first had to do a double take at the topic headline, but then seeing that picture of Marisa in the original post, I can see her pulling it off. She's matured past the Marisa we knew back on A Different World and the early 90s. I think people are uneasy more with the fact that it's making US feel older than anything else.
