I'd like the ribbon, too, please.

I grew up with Nintendo, especially in the Iwata era since I was 8 when he stepped up as president. I owe so many of my childhood memories to his games (EarthBound, Smash, Kirby...), and the games made under his leadership. He was sincerely a nice man. Thank you for everything and rest in peace, Mr. Iwata. :(

Holy shit I mainly credited Iwata for the success of the Wii and the DS (and 3ds), I had no idea he had worked on Earthbound and Pokemon G+S.

Wow.

I know it's probably too soon, and I don't mean to be insensitive, but any word on who is taking his place?

I posted my condolences when I first heard the news, but now that I've read every post in this thread I'm legit tearing up. The passing of Mr. Iwata is hitting me harder than any celebrity death ever has. I think it's a great example of how successful he was in wanting to connect directly to the fans.

Satoru Iwata, you will be missed.

You know, an amazing gif would be if someone took the ending of FFX (Where Tidus is disappearing and then high fives Jecht) and edits in Iwata and Yamauchi.

i never really thought about the kind of president iwata was. i had been able to read up on yamauchi and having experienced the nintendo he created, especially in the video game world, yamauchi seemed more like a mad genius. in contrast, and now that there is time to look back, iwata seemed more like an artisan toymaker, especially given the stories of his programming prowess. i think one of the most startlingly fantastic things he did at nintendo were the iwata asks, interviews that shed light on the design process of current and classic games. that sort of thing really set him apart as far as i'm concerned.

I agree, Iwata Asks not only allowed us to see the kind of person Iwata was, but also the kind of leader, designer and mentor he was for Nintendo.

Seeing the posts on here about his involvement with Super Smash makes you really appreciate how the man wasn't just a business man. He was a gamer first and foremost who cared about our industry.

Whoever steps into his place has a monumental task ahead of them to fill those shoes.

We lost a legend today.
RIP Iwata

Oh man...

Out of all of the (incredible) tribute images so far, this has hit me the hardest. Nintendo games exist in brightest parts of human imagination - they push the buttons at the epicenter of fun, slide through our brains bringing a trail of creative whimsy in their wake. Seeing a picture of Kirby crying, or Mario with his head bowed still takes me to those vibrant worlds - a sadder continent to be sure, but in those vibrant worlds nonetheless.

This image, though... this is brick and stone. Metal and mortar. This is real. An actual human of finite longevity, of failing flesh and blood, will soon be laid to rest. Another incarnation of the man can't be programmed, another Iwata asks can never be held, and another direct with him will never be filmed.

Iwata's final credits are here, the closing coda on one of the most genuine and beloved characters the game of life ever programmed. Sure, we can replay Iwata's greatest moments, but we'll never get another new level.

So thank you, Satoru Iwata. Thank you for your integrity, thank you for your prowess, and most of all - thank you for leading us through the few bright spots Earth still has to offer. </3
Great post

Can someone please make me a ribbon avatar? I can't make it myself because I'm traveling.

I just burst into tears and I don't even know what to do. I wasn't always on the same page as Iwata, but I always loved him and the company that he ran. This just hurts so much. I only just found out 10 min ago. Went from complete shock to just falling apart.

I can't believe this. If I could at least pay my respects with a ribbon avatar, it would mean a lot. Thanks.

I am usually not so moved by news like this other than feeling sadness that a life is now lost. However as I understood it he was a genuinely amazing man and a real gamer. A quote from him,
"On my business card, I am a corporate president. In my mind, I am a game developer. But in my heart, I am a gamer” - Satoru Iwata, GDC 2005

I also heard that took a big cut in pay when Nintendo was facing hard times so that his employees had it a little less rough.

I am so moved by this news that I've been on the brink of tears since I found out. I've just been sitting here thinking about all of the fond memories I had as a kid going through my amazingly crappy life and carrying my precious Gameboy brick and a huge pack of batteries that I would save up for around with me everywhere as a coping mechanism. It got me through some really rough times and this man was partly responsible for that.

I don't have that Gameboy anymore but for my birthday my wife surprised me with a OG Gameboy brick just like the one I used to have, and in honor of his memory I think I'm going to stop all of my other gaming and spend the rest of the day and do what Mr Iwata worked so hard making sure we could all do and play nothing but it.

If others would like to join me we can maybe make a thread.

If there is any place for this sort of thing it should be GAF and other gaming forums. This man represented the things that we live for and love to do and he worked hard to make sure that we can all have the opportunity to do it.

Iwata: *laughs*

All of us: *cries*

:( I will actually genuinely miss him, even just through the Internet and Directs etc he just seemed like a very likeable and fun person, exactly the person who should be showing me Nintendo games. :(

A CEO didn't have to randomly just interview developers for nothing but our entertainment (and showing appreciation to the developers too). But he did, because he cared.

:(

That came out of nowhere. Couldn't believe it when I first saw it. I saw/read a lot of the tributes to him on Twitter and I definitely shed a few tears. Don't think I would have reacted like this to any other business man dying. Almost felt like losing a good friend.

RIP Mr. Iwata. There really wasn't anyone else like you in the games industry, and it lost a great man today.

this hurts too much :(

Why does it say "Directly" tho? I am probably missing out on the reference...

Shouldn't it be "Please Understand". We need some comic relief for such a sad loss.

I vote "We Understand" instead
