Yamauchi didn't put himself out there as the public face of the company in nearly the same way. He was public enough, but there was no Yamauchi Asks, no Nintendo Directs (not that the technology really existed during his tenure)... and he wasn't particularly a gamer himself, but a savvy businessman with an eye for developer talent. The personal connection for many (myself included) is much stronger with Iwata.

Well, although I doubt it WOULD have happened with Yamauchi, you do have to admit that these channels didn't exist at all back when Yamauchi was president. Social media wasn't even a thing back then.

I slept early yesterday, just minutes before receiving this info. I'm absolutely devastaded.
Man is a legend and his legacy won't be forgotten. I can give nothing but my condolences to his family, friends and Nintendo.

Rest in Peace, Iwata.

All my complaints about Nintendo's showing at E3 this year seem so petty now. Those guys had something far more important to deal with but they still put on the best show they could. I appreciate them so much more for it and am heartbroken that Iwata surely wanted to be there for his fans. Regardless of what they do as a business and publisher, Nintendo will always have a special place in my heart because they are genuinely good people doing good work to make others smile.

Yeah man, I posted this earlier in the thread, but was probably washed away with how fast the thread is moving.

I think what I am taking away from this new is - we are all gamers, and we all play for fun. The games, companies we like and industry have ups and downs. But we should think we should take one step back before opening the flood gates with hate and negative comments.

I was in that Nintendo direct thread when it was live and writing comments like "what the hell are Nintendo doing?" Not as harsh as other peoples, but still. Now to think Iwata was reading all this negative hate, while he knows the long time future of Nintendo and all the exciting things to come to please the fans. While all he can do is apologise and promise to try better next time. And I genuinely think he was telling the truth. Feel bad thinking of him seeing gross comments the internet was making about Nintendo because they were unhappy with the direct.

Somehow, playing Splatoon right now feels special in a way that every one in the plaza have sent their messages of condolence and appreciation to Iwata. Miiverse has really bonded the community well in sad times like this.

Listening to this

while reading this

completely broke me. Rest in peace, you beautiful man.
Yeah... Together with Smile and Tears...
I already posted my words but I cant really express enough what it means to me. It was the Nintendo he led that made me interested in console gaming again, it was him that helped create Mother 2...
He might have not have had any kids, but he still left something behind to each of us. You came this far Iwata, you were a great man.

Playing splatoon and literally every squid I walked up to in the town area had a message of condolence for Iwata. I don't know if they are picked randomly or not, but it was a touching surprise to see so many people posting about it.
Same thing happened in Yoshi's Woolly World today. Most of the Miis on the map showed condolences to Iwata.

Oh man, I tried to go and watch the April direct again just for memories and I couldn't even make it a couple of minutes in. It's going to be so strange not having Iwata's presence/voice leading us through those presentations, it was just so perfect regardless of the actual quality of the content shown.

I don't remember all these fan comics/art for Yamauchi.

I respect Yamauchi, I feel he was an incredible business man and he did a lot for his company and the industry. However as a person I didn't really like him much.

Iwata wasn't just a businessman, he was a creator and he was a gamer. He became president of Nintendo at a time the management were public figures who would present the products and as a result people felt they knew him a lot better.

People also knew his work and on top of that he seemed to really be a likable guy, where Yamauchi never really seemed to.

This isn't to disrespect Yamauchi but I think he was in the background and viewed as a ruthless businessman, whereas Iwata was in the public eye and generally liked.

Although I haven't been the biggest Nintendo fan since the Super NES I could tell this guy loved his job and respected the industry.

Hopefully Nintendo find a suitable replacement and recovers from this tragedy.

Another artist made an Iwata tribute, this time it's Splatoon-related.

Hahaha so sad and true. Although, Iwata died at his post. Yamauchi had retired and left the scene.

Yamauchi will be more remembered for me since he was reigning when I got my NES in the 80s. Iwata was a nice guy though and I loved his passion.

Rereading his old interviews it's still hard to stomach that he's gone. Like in a few weeks he's back with a new Direct, or a new Iwata Asks. Or in a few months a gaming journo people will ask him about NX and he said "Please wait until next E3."

We're not going to see Iwata unveil NX out of his suit pocket ._.

Unlikely, but how sweet would it be if he had already recorded an NX reveal with a prototype.

I don't remember all these fan comics/art for Yamauchi.

probably because even if Yamauchi created Nintendo, Iwata was his successor and pushed their modern vision. he basically became the face of Nintendo , interacting with fans and game developers in a way that showed he truly cared about what he was making, fun videogames.

Both deserve enourmous amount of respect, and Yamauchi chose Iwata for a reason.

Can't really say what's already been said. Some questioned his stubbornness, but in the end, he'll be remembered for pushing the industry forward. DS and Wii were monumental successes, and he brought a lot of gamers to the table that might not had been there otherwise.

RIP. :(
