This is sort of the dilemma. If people define "the game makes me grind" as "any game that allows you to grind", then that's pretty different to defining "the game makes me grind" as "the average player would not be able to get a hang of the mechanics enough to beat it without substantial time investment in grinding". And certainly grinding is not "the game makes me fight some random battles on the way to the boss".

So this. I feel like "lolgrindfest" can often be one of those crutch arguments people use when the fact is they simply struggled with the game's difficulty.

DQIX's generic party members were really boring.

But I do love monster party members just for the sheer amount of variety it adds, giving each player a different team.

Vita isn't likely. 3DS is possible what with the main series being there with 7 and 8. We'll see what happens tomorrow.

Who knows. If it's PS3/PS4 an additional Vita version might not take that much more effort (and it might very well sell better on Vita in Japan than on PS4). So... I don't think it's impossible. But we'll see soon anyway...

Why go to the effort when anyone with a Vita and a PS4 can stream it?

Why is grinding a bad thing anyway?

I feel more accomplished when a boss whoops my ass, i go back to the drawing board make adjustments, build my strength and demolish its butthole

depending on your monster capturing/setup, DQV could be a grind at times. I just tried my best to stick with my family as party members for as much as possible and decent healing monsters in my back pocket to heal me during longer dungeon excursions

I've never liked recruiting monsters as a party member in an rpg. I mean, obviously not counting pokemon of course.

Shoulda got a slimeknight

More people in Japan own a Vita than a PS4. That's very unlikely to change in the next year or so.

Not to mention that Japanese actually use their handhelds outside of their homes, contrary to everyone else on this planet. :p

I take mine everywhere. I'm weird though.

and the Monster job classes in VII, maxing them out you become the monster. Beating the hell out of
God himself
with a Plat King Slime absorbing all his attacks is too fun.

Not a fan of using Monsters personally, or random characters. I much preferred using Bianca and
my kids
in DQV over the monster spot. In games like FF Tactics and Tactics Ogre, I shot my generics asap and find DQIX the weakest entry in the series for that reason. People with personality make the overall adventure or journey of playing the game more exciting.

The logo is the resolution of a DS game, so it's coming to DS.

and why stop there, the two top selling piece of hardware all time are PS2 and DS, together added up it equals nearly the entire US population, I'm sure everyone who has ever bought one of those will run into the streets on a school day to purchase DQ XI, hello best selling game of forever and always.

I knew the time would come when I'll be glad that I never plugged off the PS2 from my TV, I knew it!

I love that aspect of IX..but I understand why others did not. I love job systems and character building so that shit was my crack..still it made the story feel like an after thought in a sense

The monsters were something a little extra.

And Pokemon was worse about grinding in my mind.

There's probably more to them to be revealed later, but the logo and subtitle do come across as throwbacks to the series' history. Very cool.

Use your imagination and make them non-generic for yourself. That's why I prefer the DQ games where you create the party you want, not the party the devs decided you should have (with good-to-bad written characters).

I really hope this game isn't anything like IX. I never finished it. It was just that boring.

The generic party members just ruined the game for me. I'm sorry. The story was non-existent for me in IX.

OK, did ANYONE like DQIX on Neogaf? Because by far I see more people deriding and spitting on the game. I know it was popular and was a critical success elsewhere (other DQ forums seem to enjoy it) but here everyone seems to think its this anti-thesis to Dragon Quest.

OT: Sweet logo. Can't wait for the around 10 hours for this conference to start. Don't care what systems its on either as I trust the DQ guys to give a great DQ game.

Maturity, bitches.
Well I want them to bring back having individual graphics for every bit of equipment in the game from DQIX.

Though, I technically would rather have a system like The Last Story, where armour stats and looks were separate so you could have your character look the way you want without the penalty of using bad equipment, but that would really be breaking away from tradition.

I liked it. My big dislike though is that like Pokémon it only allows for one save meaning I can never replay it without buying another copy since with the NWFC dead I'd lose all the downloadable quests.

I love DQ9. It's like a mashup of the best parts from every other DQ game. Job/character system from DQ3, vignette storyline from DQ7, and artstyle from DQ8.

I quite liked it. The postgame got old pretty quickly and it's far from my favorite in the series but I still liked it a lot.

I thought it was really enjoyable but it was my first Dragon Quest game. Having now played DQVII on 3DS and currently 12 hours into DQVI, I definitely appreciate having properly written party members, though I also liked how personal your team was in DQIX.

Definitely wouldn't say it was shit like a lot of people on here seem to, but I can see why they wouldn't like it compared to the other games, if VII and VI are barometers for the rest of the games in the series.

I'm just happy we are getting some more console JRPG love this gen and in case of DQXI it probably has a decent budget too. After DQVIII and Ni No Kuni I hope Level 5 is behind it.

I really liked 9. I would probably call it "the worst in the main series" but it's far from being a bad game IMO

I have nothing against DQIX. I gave it a try but just couldn't enjoy it.

Okay just earlier in the thread I called it the weakest entry in the series by far, and I stand by that. However that doesn't mean I didn't like the game. Dragon Quest is a very enjoyable series, and a weak entry is still better than other games. DQIX is a good game, just not as good as the rest of the franchise.

I liked it.

Not my favourite DQ, but overall very enjoyable.

The main characters are rarely that strong in Dragon Quest so that aspect didn't bother me much and I'm really not a fan of DQVIII so the graphics, the perspective and core gameplay was mostly a plus. The non random battles was probably the biggest issue for me. In theory it sounds nice but in reality it was not an improvement IMO.

I'd rate it below the tenku trilogy but above everything else.

Um, I loved DQ9 with all my heart and soul. It's what got me into the franchise. I've since played IV, V, and VIII.

And it hurts so much that those DQ7/8 3DS games aren't coming here. And I feel like this one won't either :(

Grotto grinding is the bread and butter of that game. Having a team of the hero and three vixens knocking people out was great. I also liked manipulating the rng to make alchemy easier and getting the legendary equipment/seed farming, made searching for good grotto's a must. It was the longest I ever played an jrpg before clocking in at 400 hours. I enjoyed it for that aspect but I really want the series to go back to a more structured style, maybe not quite as long as VII but lots of job classes like that one and a grand story with amazing characters like yangus.

The non random battles was probably the biggest issue for me. In theory it sounds nice but in reality it was not an improvement IMO.

That was my favorite aspect, vanishing and collecting materials on the world map by going places you were not strong enough to go yet was a big part of my enjoyment, making me feel like a little thief. with random battles it would not be as engaging. I also like the thrill of finally finding a grotto with metal king slimes, having that visual there was more satisfying than if you had to see them suddenly appear after a random encounter. The only problem to me was the tight spaces where you could not maneuver away from those big ass monsters haha.

I loved it enough to play 250+ hours on it. The party creation is a throwback to DQ3 (one of my favourites in the series and one that also had 'generic' party members). The level of customisation in DQ9 (and 3) drew me in.

It's quite similar to my love for FF5 - the job system gives me the customisation I crave, even if the characterisation isn't the strongest in the series.
