That sounds super cool. Is there a Harbinger hardcover out yet?

Yes, but it looks like it's out of stock on IST right now.

Here's the first deluxe, and Harbinger Wars deluxe, which is the first event of the series. The Harbinger Wars deluxe might be kind of redundant, though, I should say - it includes 4 issues of Harbinger included in the first deluxe, the main Harbinger Wars issues, and 4 Bloodshot tie-ins that don't add much to the event. Might consider doing the TPB for that one, but your call. Second deluxe edition is due out in January; was September but it got pushed back for some reason.

Hm there's a thread I want to make but I'll wait until tomorrow when there are less comic OT threads around.

Awesome, thanks!

Ah so you just want to start a fire

Heard about American Alien and that he was doing a story for it. Checked out his AoS stuff.

First comic to actually make me come to the conclusion "The person wrote this is a complete hack" three pages in.

It's terrible beyond my wildest expectations.

Just picked up Hellboy Library Edition Vol. 1 and Saga Book 1 on IST because my physical collection is lacking and I want some big purdy books on my shelf. Next I wanna grab a giant omnibus that I can't even read comfortably.

Read Wild Children. That was a pretty good Grant Morrison impression that Kot did. It felt like the comic was just a vehicle for Kot's ideas at the time for a little over half the book, but it wrapped up really well. It actually reminded me a bit of Kill Your Boyfriend. Note to self: reread Kill Your Boyfriend

I wasnt familiar with the artist, Rossmo, before. His work here did not leave me wanting for more of it. It kind of looks like he drew it in his spare time. Body language wise, characters don't really separate themselves aside from what they are actually doing. The coloring does its job well and actually shines a bit in the more psychedelic parts.

The lettering is good too. Lettering is not something I generally comment on. The work here is good but there is no time/place for the lettering to do something outside of what we ask of most lettering which is to be invisible.

Reminds me of this essay in which author says typography should be an invisible art. That is to say, that typefaces should be designed only to be read most easily. I feel like we are at that same mentality in comics. If we do not notice the lettering, then in our expectations, it has done its job.

I wonder if we will have more varied and complex lettering in the future like we have now in typography. I hear Asterios Polyp had unique lettering for every character. In the future, might we get a comic whose biggest creative focus is the lettering? Or maybe there has already been one and I am not aware of it.

Comics thoughts comics thoughts...

I feel like lettering is one those really unsung aspects, I think a lot of thought goes into their placement, their look, what words gets dat bold emphasis. All that shit really affects the reading experience. I've seen some gorgeous comics fucked up by wack lettering, like all that cursive shit that looks damn near unreadable in early 90s Batman comics that was hot for a minute post-Year One.

You need a real hawk-eye to read some of that shit. One of my biggest pet peeves is unreadable text because it has to be in some overly fancy cursive font.

Don't think I've ever read anything quite that... stilted before. It's like, the voices I hear when I read have taken the day off and their understudy's understudy is filling in. Poor delivery in a comic book.

It's almost impressive.

Yeah.

His idea for a Supes anthology is pretty great though. Chronicle is a fine film with a great script, too. Max is smart, but he might not have a handle on these particular properties the way he thinks he does. My biggest issue with him is how full of himself he seems. Only a true narcissist could record those long YT rants. I don't care how good your pitch is, guy.

Oh man fuck that Max Landis Joker and Superman story.

"Let me write down why I think these characters suck. I'm not going to tell a story or anything, and make the ending super stupid. Please enjoy."

do not give in to large omnibus collections, they were a mistake even with official Kipp reading positions.

Anyone think it's weird that the upcoming monster variant month for DC doesn't feature a Batgirl variant. DC trying to avoid another egg on their face situation? I'm sure one of all star Batgirl team (their name not mine) could have done one. Say Babs or Rafael Albuquerque?

This running joke in BPRD about Roger not wearing pants is great

"Hi. I have pants on."

"That's even worse. Let's forget about the pants."

"Okay."

I was going to get that cover too, if not for the uproar it caused.

When I read like really depressing awful, cynical comics I almost always immediately go back to something old and good to make sure I don't hate the whole medium now, and that comics don't hate me. Just some spark of humanism, that's all I need. Some kind of empathy.

I really need to read Sandman sometime...

Srsly, Sandman has some beautiful quotes.

He draws most of it, he's a really good fit for the book. Dat and Dave Stewart's Eisner winning colors.

Yeah I saw his name was on most of it so that makes me pretty pleased. I also saw Ba and Moon listed on the 1946-1948 HC and that makes me really excited. I know that's gonna be some good shit when I get to it.

I think Conqueror Worm is my favorite out of all of the stuff I've read so far but everything is so consistently great.

Anyone going to the Boston Comic Con this weekend? I've never been to a con so I was wondering if it's worth checking out for a day.
Anybody going?

Also what's a good starting point for Hellboy? Any essential trades to look into? New or old does not matter.
My only exposure to Hellboy is via the movies but I love the art in the books so I'd like to get into it.
Someone told me to start with "Seed of Destruction", yay or nay? Where does BPRD fit into the whole thing? I know it's a spin off but I'm unsure if it's necessary to read Hellboy on its own first or not.

Start at the beginning, so Seeds of Destruction is correct. Dark Horse has been collecting the trades into Library Editions which are gorgeous hardcovers that contain two trades in each. They're $20ish online so they're a pretty good deal considering they're really high quality books in general (sewn binding, felt covers, nice paper, etc.). They're numbered too so it's easy to follow them as well, especially in comparison to the large amount of trades the series has.

BPRD is technically a spin-off but it more or less becomes the main series. It also has been collected into omnibus editions (hardcover and paperback) so that helps with reading. If you're interested you should start after Hellboy: Conqueror Worm which is in the third Library Edition.

It's a pretty massive series between the two books but it's good stuff. I originally just wanted to check out Hellboy and some BPRD but I've found myself even looking into checking out the spin-offs they've spawned like Lobster Johnson and Abe Sapien after getting into them.

When are they gonna make a young Jean statue :(

I really wish Marvel made statues like DC do. Think how many Spider-Gwen statues they could have sold.

Cool thanks for the info! I just quickly checked amazon and the paperbacks all together are actually quiet cheaper than the Library Editions. Is it worth the price difference?
