Playstation 4 firmware Ver.3.0 is currently beta tested

well that's your opinion...and I just don't agree with it ;)

PS4 cross bar is an excellent and fast UI

I never said anything about the speed. The Design is just shit. And with all this coming Social crap its going to be cluttered to the max.

PS4 UI just looks outdated.

The community thing sounds super useful for NeoGAF gaming communities for specific games. No more befriending of hundreds of people.

then let's agree to disagree because I don't think the design is crap at all...

sure they could add folders, but that doesn't require a complete redesign

I love the quick and snappy UI. Folders or a sorting option would be great. But it's not crappy imo.

in terms of speed..i agree with you. The PS4 OS is definitely one of the fastest console OS i've used, especially when installing and switching between game and other stuff. Heck, the PS4 can install games faster than any OS i've ever seen. (Sony clearly heard the loud complains of PS3 game install time which are crazy long for bigger games)

However, the OS UI design doesn seems to lack some sort of coherent design and/or future-proofing and foresight. The fact that the OS UI doesn't account the fact the user may have many games installed, thus having a long stack of scrollable games is a mistake. Pinning of games, sorting of games should be allowed at the very least.

Just experienced something interesting about download speeds.

If you do something, even just browsing the dashboard download speeds are awful, but if you press X on the tile showing the single item you are downloading and just stay with that screen doing nothing, download speeds are at max without needing to put ps4 in standby.

There must be some sort of bug in download bandwidth allocation introduced recently

It certainly needs attention in the organization department. Accessing far games on the scroll feels like a chore, similar to entering text on the xbox Netflix app! A buddy finally picked up a PS4 and this was his first complain (second was incompatibility with his universal remote :))

Otherwise, as noted the speed is fantastic.

Never understood why folders are such an issue here on Gaf with regards to the PS4. I mean yeah it would be nice but the way some people go on you would think it was still the PS3 where you would have to wait for the icons to appear for a while or just take long to scroll down.

I had 50 games on my PS4 at one point and it would literally take me about 3 seconds to scroll all the way through them to the other side.

I know this is not about the FW update but a german online shop is selling the PS4 for 255€.
http://elektronik-kron.de/?product=...b-controller&gclid=CLDV7LKSo8cCFU3LtAodolkJMQ

Did someone buy there? Is this legit?

In their imprint it mentions that their tax ID is applied for, which I have never seen in an imprint before. Ah, I just googled the CEO that is mentioned there and the first Google hit was a warning that this is a fake shop. DO NOT ORDER FROM THERE!

All I really want is for my controller to stop losing connectivity for what seems like no reason!

I assume other people get this? I have to restart the PS4 to fix which is so annoying. I've googled alot and don't think there is a solution. Shit Internal bluetooth maybe?

Pretty sure this isn't something common or a software glitch. Sounds like faulty hardware or something local causing interference with the Bluetooth.

never had this and never heard of this before. Maybe it's just your console.

I had this happen to me a few times before and I also couldn't find out what caused it. It started after a FW update maybe half a year ago but at some point it stopped happening. Not sure what caused it and what fixed it but it's definitely a thing that exists.

Sounds like a very well designed UI... oh yeah its not.

A lot of people are requesting folders. Whilst i would welcome that I would actually prefer a method of tagging so that a game can reside within more than one tag (folder). I should be able to define my own tags and filter my library by those tags.

So a UI design that takes up to 3 seconds to go through your entire current downloaded list is somehow bad?

I appreciate that segmenting them into genres or disc based/digital folders might be nice but other than that it serves it purpose well.

I mean lets say they introduce folders, your going to have to go through the same exact thing but in the folders instead of the home screen. Considering the way the games tab works with the drop down sections for current activity, news, dlc etc. there isn't really a way you could tile the results without it being messy so logically it would still have to be a side scrolling option.

This is a great idea. Could include a few opt-in preset tags that are predefined and work instantly. They already have a tag system from the ps store.

The ranks of individual items on this page have always been really strange to me.

Based on anecdotal experience, it seems to me like the top contenders should be, in no particular order:
  • Ability to appear offline
  • Folders/Organization
  • User themes
  • Account name changing
  • Less compressed screenshots/video, i.e. png
  • Increased download speeds
  • User X appears online-type notifications

Most of these are on there, but in many cases not particularly close to the top. Instead we have stuff like "compatibility for extremely specific model of racing wheel" and stuff like that. What's going on there?

That happens because the site is badly designed. The most popular ideas are always the most visible, so ideas posted first will get more votes than more recent ideas, simply because they got votes first.

If you look at the top ideas, most of them were posted on the same day, the day the website opened up for PS4 ideas.

Yes they need. Current PS4 OS isnt well designed at all
Yes it is, it just needs a few implemented features
that should have been added a long time ago

It needs to allow more than two lines where games can have their separate lines and apps and everything else is in its own line. Add more custom customization. Also add folders that have those options as well.

No.

Long horizontal list of icons that all get mixed together with non-game apps with no ability to group or pin games that disappear behind a menu option and get mixed in with a massive list games that I may or may not play from PS+ some of which are installed and some of which are not installed.

There are games I forgot I had installed because there are over 50 games in my library.

The OS is a horrible convoluted mess of usability, it needs a BIG overhaul.

It needs to be a hybrid of Vita/PS4 where you scroll menu options vertically and has separate sections like Home/Favorites, Games, Apps, Notifications, Friends, Settings and then you can scroll horizontally for apps and menu options related to the section.

They need to get rid of the horizontal line of games and apps. It works fine if you have like five games, then it's just cumbersome. But if they keep the line for whatever reason, they need to stop auto pushing their apps and shit to the front whenever they want to, because I don't want what I don't use at the front of that list.

Oh. Shit. You're right. Well, that's dumb.

Edit: Why aren't they just removing the closed ones from listing? They're bumping actually relevant items off the list.

The UI is cool, but I think they should have subsets for scrolling
A horizontal scroll of recently played games
A horizontal scroll for Apps only

Is all that's needed. Separate the apps from the games and I'm cool all that other shit I couldn't care less about. I'm old skool put the disc in and play, don't care for all that other shit outside of sharefactory.

The community would be something like how there's a SteamGAF, correct? Everyone on GAF could be added to a PlayStation community to quickly find people?

The other thing you guys must consider, is the team is currently creating and testing the Project Morpheus User Interface, which is completely different.

The only times I turn my PS4 on is when I'm going to play a game. In that situation, the UI is perfect for me.

If they hadn't FINALLY added the ability to respond to notifications with the guide button, it would be much worse.

Same here. I will never understand why people get so worked up over the non-gaming interface of a console. People actually turn on the console and navigate the UI as if it was a game??

And the community features sound good. Each game with it's own community reminds me of Miiverse.

Seems rather bare bones if this is the final list of features. Personally I'd like to see an update to the media player and friend notifications and maybe better customisation for the dash
Consider that 3.0 will likely release withing 2 weeks and I'd guess 4.0 October 27th at the Paris show which likely will have DRM finally embedded which is needed for major media features: Southbridge SoC embedded Playready

2.57 - July 22, 2015
2.50 - March 26, 2015
2.00 - October 28, 2014 (Tuesday)
1.75 - July 29, 2014
1.70 - April 30, 2014
1.60 - February 4, 2014
1.50 - November 13, 2013

This is Speculation

3.0 - August 25 PS4 FIRMWARE 3.0 ADDS YOUTUBE AND TWITTER VIDEO UPLOAD FEATURES
4.0 - October 27 (Tuesday) Sony will be holding an “international media briefing” at Paris Games Week on October 27, 2015.

The current DLNA player is a gameAPP placeholder without DRM for the MediaAPP that will run in Southbridge. It's release puts off a MediaAPP version for a few months or they woudn't have released a placeholder.

Possible features in 4.0 The DRM Media update

Vidipath for the PS4 requires DRM, HTML5 <video> EME MSE (major browser update), Direct WiFi and Miracast, all DLNA modes, Java, supports ATSC 2.0 and works with Cable TV DVRs as servers.

Antenna TV tuner and DVR for the PS4 page 11 Coming to the Xb1 this year. The cite is for Cable TV sometime in 2016 and depends on the provider.

ooVoo is overdue but it likely is waiting for HEVC and embedded DRM which will be major features. With ooVoo comes facial/emotional recognition, media streaming while video chating (requires the DRM be active on both sides if streaming commercial media and if home movies to at least inspect meta data to be sure it's not commercial media). Commercial media should be encrypted and both sides have to ensure rights. ooVoo will chat with many different platforms besides Playstation.

4K blu-ray platforms are expected to start selling in the same time period and the PS4 will be a 4kblu-ray player so that's likely part of 4.0

4K blu-ray digital bridge will probably be in a later update

If the PS4 is getting Vidipath then the PS3 will have it also page 12

Really Sony just seems to be scared to death of us customising the UI in any real way.

I don't think it's that. I think, for the 'launch' UI, they stripped as many unnecessary features as possible to focus on getting a speedy, working, bug-free OS out there at launch. This is a safe, sound strategy -- avoid feature creep at all cost, make sure your build is rock solid, add features later.

So, for example, at launch they know people will have relatively small libraries -- so don't waste time and energy coding, debugging, and possibly introducing issues by allowing the kind of organization required for large libraries. Add that later. Again, this is sound.

However.. now we're in the period when some people -do- have large libraries... so now some of use need those features, and Sony needs to work them into their priority list, which is always easier said than done when you have a thousand voices asking for a thousand different features... do you focus on UI improvements? PS1/PS2 Classics? Suspend/resume? Share improvements? Bug fixes? Optimization? etc, etc.

And while the easy answer is 'all of them'... that's just not how it works in real projects. So my guess is there is a meeting somewhere, and someone says 'let's get those folders working!'... and someone else says 'Yes, that would be nice, but it -works- as is, so let's focus on getting [insert new feature here] working' instead..." and since the lack of folders only really affects a relatively small % of people [those with the largest libraries] any they can technically get by w/o folders, it'll constantly get pushed down the priority list, even though we want it, they want it, everybody wants it.

At least that's how the large projects I've worked often seem to go -- lots of pressure in different directions, and 'nice to haves' always falling to the bottom of the list.

R1/L1 shifts "pages" to load the things you see on top (like notifications and friends list)

Personally, I'd like this if they removed some of the tiles (too many redundant tiles that could be put elsewhere), and allowed us to pin games/other things instead.

Everything most important to you would be right at your fingertips.

so still no organization? folders... Arrange by "XYZ"?

Its literally the only feature other than BC i want... just let me organize my XMB for fuck sake.

i hope Sony doesnt read this gaf thread, ps4 UI is fast and clean, if they change it, i change Console. There´s a reason Xbox One new UI looks alot like Ps4 but in Vertical, they have Notifications on there, messages just like Ps4, difference is that on Xbox One you can acess that without leaving the game.

The only complain is where the games are, it should allow us to do folders, also apps shouldnt be in that Tv Folder but they should be viewed as games if we want to, friends notifications when online is a must and changing name aswel but Sony PLEASE DO NOT change the UI.

I had a controller doing this and it was the controller. Took it back to get a replacement, and have never seen this problem from the replacement nor the other two controllers I use regularly.

I set up a proxy via my PC yesterday and and a 5GB game that typically shows 3 hours to download took only about 30-40 min. That Sony soft throttle.

Is this where the controller will lock up and move on its own? Along with the mic dipping terribly so people cannot hear you (the mic dip is mistaken for lag).

I had this happen to me recently and its defectively not my controllers since they would work perfectly fine before.

I think it's some kind of Bluetooth interference. I rebuild my database (probably does jack shit for an issue like this), and reset/reconnected the controllers.
