Dragon Ball Z ALL*

*Not exactly all. Having watched up through the Frieza saga as a kid when it was airing on Toonami but gave up on it because of the pacing and Toonami's penchant for restarting the series back to the beginning. So I just jumped like right after the Frieza saga and watched from there. Shocked I actually made it through the whole show. But having played a bit of that Dokkan mobile game and being slightly interested in Super (after seeing that screen grab of Vegeta and Trunks on a train ride), I decided I wanted to sit down and catch up on everything.

Anywho, my longtime complaints generally still stand. The fighting tends to be fairly boring and drawn out. It isn't just the Freiza fight, Cell and Buu are the same way. I'd say Buu might be the worst, I can't count how many times Buu gets blown up and everyone things he's dead, then reforms again, and everyone acts really shocked. Not to mention the fact that Buu makes no sense. Apparently his original form is the strongest, but he got weaker absorbing the Kais, but stronger again absorbing Goten/Trunks/Gohan/Piccolo, but then returns back to his strongest form when he loses all of them? I dunno, shit doesn't make sense.

But as a fan of fine slice of life products, the most enjoyable parts tended to be between major arcs. Particularly Gohan going to high school and the World Martial Arts Tournament. Videl is great, especially twin tails Videl which is totes adorbs. Goten and Trunks' hijinks are pretty good as well.

Also, SSJ3 is dumb. For one, actually calling it "Super Saiyan 3" is dumb, especially when Goku is standing in front of Buu explaining the levels of Super Sayan. Two, it looks dumb. His hair looks dumb, and his caveman-esque brow ridges look dumb.

And what is with that ending? Like, they couldn't wrap it up any better than that? Goku just saying he's going to disappear for a few years to train some random kid? Please tell me Super ignores this ending, right?

Now, for the ranking of characters:

SSJ3 tier:
Krillin - Fact of the matter is, he's the coolest character in the show. Destructo Disc is the coolest attack and he has the best personality.
Videl - Again, twin tails Videl is so goddamn adorable and that elevates her significantly. I think her adult voice (in the Funi dub) is kind of unfortunate
Goten & Trunks - Unfused they're a great tandem. Trunks' brash overconfidence combined with Goten's naivety is a fantastic combination.
Vegeta - Its a shame he never really gets a solid victory, but he's probably the best developed character over the course of the show.

Ascended tier:
Goku - His goofiness is usually a plus, but can sometimes get annoying.
Gohan (all ages) - Generally nothing wrong with Gohan, solid character throughout.
Mr. Popo
King Kai
Android #18
Pan

SSJ tier:
Piccolo
Bulma
ChiChi
Tien
Yamcha
Chaouzu
Gogeta

Sayan tier:
Gotenks - For as good as Goten and Trunks are apart, they're that bad together. Just an annoying character.
Master Roshi
All the other Kais

Yajirobe tier:
Yajirobe

So, now the questions I have:

1. Which, if any, of the movies are worth watching?
2. Where does Super start off at story-wise?
3. How much Videl is in Super and what is her hairstyle?

Yoru no yatterman - 06

OMG this forshadowing is so obvious

but i guess they need to show it so it won't feel forced later.

i'm still thinking something just so off about this show but the show's not bad..it's just not as entertaining as it should have been .
Feels like the themes they used in an episode are re-used again and again and again.

So far the show is not a watse of time but it'zs clearly something i won't recommand to a newcomer.

It's a shame i feel that way because this show is really , really well animated.

Outbreak company was really good (awesome maid) however, it is still lacking a 2nd season to at least attempt an ending...

Awww, that's actually sad...

Flowers of Evil is a very "love it or hate it" sort of affair. The pacing is glacial and the animation is weird as hell (the entire show is rotoscoped), but the story and characters are great and the anime really nails a few key scenes from the manga.

Thanks, I'll give it a shot.

Lmao. Oh boy...

Ah well I'll still give it a try. I wonder who the staff will be. Is this where Ishidate has been or has he been working on the KnK movies?

The Kyoukai films were finished earlier this year. He, or Taichi Ogawa (who was the chief unit director for the film with new footage), could be working on this one. Likely the staff will be announced next month or October for the "New work" stage event at the KyoAni and Do fan event.

Super takes place before that I think.

The objective answer to this question is - none. (Haven't watched the Dragon Ball ones and the last Z one.) But if you're going through entire franchise, you might want to at least check out the Broly movie (11th going by wiki) so that you who the hell he is. And if perhaps may want more of Gohan being a pansy/badass, watch the bojack one.

Thanks for getting me on this, just steamrolled s1 in 2 days, pretty refreshing with no 'anime' shenanigans going on

I do hope you like the show very much like I did when I watch it. Yes, 1st season is a bit slow as it try to set up the foundation of the show story and background and also Emma and William character but once you pass through them, the 2nd season will become a blast and will get emotional in few scene.

If you do still love the show and want more, go read the manga as the show is retelling from the manga but in the manga, it goes more of after the big incident between William and Emma when season 2 finish.

Also, I wish this show will be in the list of show for people to do Let's watch a hidden gems anime show as it's really a hidden gems which few people didn't know about.

Your Alpha avatar just reminded me to finish the last ep from the 2nd Yokohama OVA

FMP's LN ended like 3 years ago. Why are you still keeping up hope for an anime?

There cannot truly be despair without hope

FMP's LN ended like 3 years ago. Why are you still keeping up hope for an anime?

Fujimi Shobo's Fantasy Bunko is holding a special event in October. At the event, there is a special FMP event scheduled on the main stage. Last year's Fantasy Bunko's main stage events were all for projects that were animated/yet to be animated with one exception of a mobile game. Thus, it's possible there is more FMP anime coming, despite the main series coming to a close in 2010.

Maybe my favourite episode yet, with the family trying to deal with the fallout of what was revealed in the last episode and with last hours of their father's life retraced. Though me thinks Benten might yet add to this story. I didn't really took notice of it earlier but music and its use was great here. Show remains quite a looker with beautiful backgrounds and surprising amount of movement in them.

Aren't Yasaborou and his "fiance" cousins ? If this is not a one off situation but more of a trend then no wonder this family is eccentric. ;p

Considering how outrageously talented Kyoto Animation is, I do wish they would do fewer "ANIME: the Animation" type shows. Not that its wrong but just for the sake of mixing things up more often.

Drifters has a much better staff list than I expected. Guess Hirano wants that Ultimate quality from the getgo this time.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=133&v=zLEMI-7ys7U

Director: Kenichi Suzuki (Jojo's Bizarre Adventure)
Series Composition/Script: Hideyuki Kurata/Yousuke Kuroda (Hellsing Ultimate)
Animation Director: Ryoji Nakamori (Hellsing Ultimate)

Is this happening in place of Jojo Part IV? Is this happening at David Production? Because that does not please me :(

Kinda wanna try out diabolik lovers (for the same reason i watched mars of destruction and skelter heaven ...)

I mean, it can't be worse than dog & scissors..... right? (for reference, thats the only show that i've actually perma-dropped... probably.................................)

Dog and Scissors is pretty crap, but better than Diabolik Lovers. At leas D&S has the Editor!

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/int...hare-how-much-producing-a-season-costs/.91536

Some production figures. I always knew it was low, but 150k per episode is lower than i really expected. And even then most don't break even. And of course just like Hollywood a small subset of successful shows fund the unsuccessful ones.

It does make me wonder just what kind of amounts overseas licensing generates. I've always wondered about that, especially given the amount of content Funimation and Crunchyroll stream for next to nothing.

I remember reading an article on the downfall of ADV for massively overspending on even mediocre licenses trying to find a hit. They spent 650k on Pumpkin Scissors for example lol. Just massive bad investments. Anime is difficult to make money licensing. I think the actual production companies do ok because they have sponsors and partnerships that shoulder some of the cost.

So yeah, I make this short.

If you can go through the first 3 episodes, it becomes a highly enjoyable show.
Just prepare for a ton of inconsistencies and plot holes.

I kinda feel like this show should have ended after episode 7 since things kinda wrap up at that point.

the ending is sequel bait-y but not so much so that it's annoying.
dancing near a grave seems... inappropriate as well...

there's also a not so slight pedo-vibe in some scenes, specifically the ones involving the student council prez made me feel super uncomfortable.

overall, I enjoyed it (episode 2 be damned) but it's definitely not for everyone.

This show isnt that bad honestly. Shaft knows how to make a good vampire show and this one kept my attention throughout. Sad that its famous for the whole loli thing, but thats really not the focus of it at all.

Heavy Object PV

The CG actually looks decent, but the 2D animation feels slow.

I think I could like this but I will have to watch some of it to be sure. The CG is meh but the girl is a cutie and it looks like some fun action potential.

Cousin marriage is legal in Japan and was quite common until modern times.

ushio and tora is over, yet we have an anime now.

I'm honestly shocked that this exists. I have no idea why they decided to animate it now. Hunter X Hunter was made due to the manga still being popular and the story technically not being over. Too bad it was only out of hiatus for 6 or so weeks before going back in it. Jojo's is still a running series. Parasyte was advertisement for the live action movie. I have no idea why Ushio and Tora the Animation exists, but I don't mind because it's been great so far.

It seems like by the end of the episode in this series I want to jump right into the next one.
The girls are going to Japan and I have to wait a week to watch it.

Watch Gintama

Looks bad

1. Which, if any, of the movies are worth watching?
2. Where does Super start off at story-wise?
3. How much Videl is in Super and what is her hairstyle?

1. Depends if you watched Dragon Ball as well. I'd actually say most of them, except for shit like Bio Broly. The best are Battle of Gods, Fusion Reborn, Dead Zone, Bojack Unbound, the first Broly movie and the Cooler movies I would say.
2. After Buu Arc, before Battle of Gods. It recaps Battle of Gods and Resurrection F in Super.
3. Not much, she's pretty much just a housewife who does nothing now. The fate of all female dbz characters who aren't Bulma

It's because the founder of Mappa Masao Maruyama is a fan of the series and wanted to adapt Ushio to Tora. I mean the studio even considered adapting the whole series but the Author declined because he didn't want to take the chance of the anime not adapting the last arc because of bad sales. Which is why he decided to have things cut in order to adapt the end, he didn't want to take the risk.

Fate-kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS, IT’S SOOOOO GOOOOOOOD ~~~~ Not even yuri, not even mana sharing and it ended up being the best Fate related material in existence. Seriously, super seriously serious, mahou shoujo like this is amazing, so freaking wonderful, so absolutely fantastic, so incredibly awesome. I don’t care what you like, what you dislike, I don’t care what you think about mahou shoujo’s, watch this anime, do it for your anime filled heart, do it for your soul, do it to experience ultimate badass awesomeness that is escalated a thousand fold and doesn’t stop, you won’t regret it, it’s impossible to regret; JUST DO IT!

Following 4 girls, Illya, Miyu, Rin and Luvia, we witness some of the most amazing things ever. Don’t worry about the lewd, aside from well-drawn lines nothing bad happens (I’m lying, there are fan-servicy aspects involved, it’s just not a lot….). Illya is the star of the show and holy crap does she deliver. The cutest girl, the most adorable eyes/eye color, insanely cute seiyuu, her personality, it’s freaking perfect, 100000% perfect, Illya is amazing, <3 <3 <3 <3 <3. Miyu is amazing too, super cute and extra determined, the way Miyu and Illya can be with each other, phenomenal and just amazing. Rin and Luvia are good too, Rin manages to be super good looking, Luvia is okay, their personalities clash and they fight a lot, but they have some really good moments too. All about Illya and Miyu though, especially Illya, holy crap Illya, I mean…. WOOOOOOOW, it’s that good.

Art/Music/Whatever : Yeah I was so caught up in the show that everything is perfect to me; I can’t actually look for faults, why would I do that to begin with? I fell so hard for this anime that even if there are faults, I’ll look passed them and think about all the enjoyment I had watching this. The fights, the art used for magic, it’s mahou shoujo good, it’s so freaking good, the music, yeah expect to get hyped while watching, the BGM is good, the sound effects are great; the sound effect that goes with Illya’s ability to fly is super cute and will be stuck in your head because you can always hear it. The way it’s all shown is just incredible.

Story is fantastic too; there are 7 cards that need to be collected (Which are actually FATE related characters); only the girls with kaleid-sticks/wands can really do it, since the cards are protected by the character they’re fighting. The kaleid wands allow a girl to transform into a mahou shoujo and perform rather incredibly feats, so when Illya and Miyu do their stuff, it’s so much fun to watch. The transformation scene is beautiful and I’d link a gif, but people would freak out because reasons, but it’s sooo cute and squeeful, joyful cheerful fun.

Special Shout out to Episode 6: HOOOOLLLLLLYYYYYYY CRAP, that just happened. This is the episode that turned Fate-kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya from a 10 to freaking infinity, eternity, anime of all time, just so much goooooooood. After that it’s just amazing after amazing after amazing after amazing, because that’s what Fate-kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya is: It’s amazing, it’s spectacular, it’s phenomenal, it’s one of the greatest things to exist. It’s the reason why everyone needs to watch the first season, at least the first season, please watch this first season, it’s begging you, I’m begging you, do it for Illya, do it for Episode 6, just…. please.

Specials: Episode 1 of the specials, yes this is good, this is real gooooood, so gooooooood, much good. Episode 5: Holy crap this was amazing, absolutely brilliant and funny; Illya’s mom is just fantastic.

OVA: That dance, oh my gao, yes that was good fun, sparkles make everything better too!

Fate-kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya is one of the best things I have ever seen, bar none; it has absolutely everything I would ever look for in a series, cutes, amazing mahou shoujo action, a great and simple story (which gets more complex next season), a cast that invokes only <3, performance from seiyuu that leave you breathless, the scenes are all amazing. I honestly loved every nanosecond I watched Prisma Illya, every single nanosecond and I am so glad I watched it to begin with.

Lol you are so adorable Arcy. Im glad you are really enjoying anime. thats what its there for! I didnt like the art style of Prisma Illya at first but I warmed up to it and eventually it charmed me. Its so silly, like Carnival Phantasm, but a lot cuter and stylized like a mahou shoujo. Its a lot of genuine fun. True it has THOSE scenes in it, which turn a lot of people off but a fun show is a fun show.

This looks incredibly uninspired but Im sure KyoAni will do their best. VNs are really hit or miss. I wont dismiss it outright just because of that.

You're saying it's better than Fate/Zero? Those are some serious words. Are you positive? I don't believe you.

What is it? Cover and title makes it look like some high school fantasy battle series.

In some ways its way more enjoyable than Fate Zero, which frankly is a hell of a downer series. Its about a winner takes all war after all, and people are going to die horribly, and some beloved characters will eat it too. thats the nature of Fate series. Some prefer the upbeat nature of Prisma Illya, and to them its better. Not a slight on Fate Zero. Rider is still the most BOSS character in history.

I've heard about Outbreak company a lot lately, that art... sold.... so going to watch the Moe invader.

In-fact, all those anime's shown look pretty amazing...... except for Flowers of Evil, would need impressions before watching that.

Arcy you would love Outbreak Company. Like LOOOOOVE it.

Nana - 30 (dat binge watching)

Major spoiler, don't read if you're interested in the show.

Well shit, I wondered just about this happening when punk-Nana mentioned being on her pill again. Well, that an Takumi outright talking about that issue. With hachi-Nana being pregnant (most likely), from Takumi, given the time span, a whole other level of problems will be on the horizon.

Gotta say that the sheer density of relationships and affairs is almost becoming a tad much for my taste. But then,
one of hachi-Nana's major psychological struggles is how easily enamoured of guys she is. Everyone else has their fair share of skeletons in the closets, too.

Nah looks like it's being produced at Hoods. They have a "Drifters Studio" too, maybe Geneon Universal is really generous with their bank account these days. :p

I wouldn't expect a new Jojo before late 2016 anyway, so I doubt it really matters.

So what is everyone going to watch during Fall Anime Season?

I'm finally able to post my extended thoughts on the fall TV season, so here they are.

Most interesting shows:

Haikyuu S2 - The second season of the well-produced and engaging volleyball series. It's a conventional sports story, but the strong focus on a team dynamic, which lets each character have a unique place in the ensemble and brings clashing personalities together into effective teamwork, makes it stand out.

Lupin III: Italian Series - It's notable whenever this storied franchise gets a new entry that has more effort put into it than the usual yearly TV specials, and the return to the light-hearted adventure atmosphere that Lupin is traditionally known for should make this more successful than the experimentation gone awry that was the Fujiko Mine TV series. The production looks pleasing, with colorful, vibrant art, and we know an Osamu Kobayashi solo episode is part of the series, which is always an event. Hopefully this can capture the spirit of what made Lupin at its height (Caligostro) so appealing.

Noragami Aragato (S2) - The first season was a big surprise to me, treating this shounen action story with an uncommon amount of thoughtfulness in its visual and aural direction and moments of atmosphere that approached the heights of shows such as Flowers of Evil and Hyouka. I'm especially looking forward to the new season because it will be adapting the Bishamon arc, which is considered by manga readers to be a strong highlight and will be focusing on an interesting character who went underutilized in the first season. Plus more Taku Iwasaki goodness.

Osomatsu-san - This is the show I'm most looking forward to from the fall season. It's a new spin on an old comedy manga from the 1960s, with a strong staff including Youichi Fujita, who proved his comedic directing skills on Gintama, Naoyuki Asano, one of the strongest active character designers with a distinctive voice, and Seiji Tamura, who contributes strikingly beautiful backgrounds to the productions he provides art direction for (including the K-ON series, the Fujiko Mine TV series, and Rolling Girls earlier this year). The visual style looks unique and arresting, and there's a lot of potential boiling here.

Other possibilities:

Concrete Revolutio - The visuals are really colorful and polished, if a bit garish, and the melting pot of superheroes premise has potential. The Seiji Mizushima/Shou Aikawa combination is iffy though - their work on the original Full Metal Alchemist series was excellent but their more recent outings have been less successful.

Fushigi na Somera-chan - I haven't watched Ai Mai Mi, but it is fairly well-regarded so this new series from the same manga author and anime creator is worthy of note. Itsuki Imazaki has brought a level of visual flair which rises above the crowd in all the short anime he's worked on recently.

Garo: Guren no Tsuki - The first Garo anime season was inconsistent, but had some striking highlights. The Heian period setting and female protagonist are noteworthy aspects of this new season.

Kagewani - I haven't seen Yami Shibai, but that horror short series has good impressions so this new "monster suspense" series from the same creator is worth consideration.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans - Gundam is a franchise littered with mediocrity and Mari Okada's brand of melodrama is problematic at the best of times, but Nagai is a skilled director so... you never know? At least it won't be senile Tomino?

One Punch Man - The manga has such incredible art thanks to Murata that it'll be practically impossible for the anime to live up to it, but Shingo Natsume and a team of high-class animators working on the adaptation make it about as promising as it could be. Hopefully the show will be able to capture some of what makes the manga so beloved.

Sakurako-san no Ashimoto ni wa Shitai ga Umatteiru - This adaptation of the light novel "A Corpse is Buried Under Sakurako's Feet" catches my eye mostly due to its premise - a high school student teams up with a beautiful woman in her twenties to investigate various incidents surrounding bones. It could prove to be a more grounded and substantial story than is typical for light novels.

Shin Atashin'chi - Not much is known about this new incarnation of the well-known family comedy, but if experienced comedy director Akitaro Daichi returns to the series it could be successful.

Subete ga F ni Naru - This adaptation of a serial murder mystery novel by the author of Sky Crawlers, featuring character designs by respected manga artist Inio Asano (Solanin, Punpun) has some potential.

Young Black Jack - A spinoff of Osamu Tezuka's classic series about the titular unlicensed genius doctor. There's no way this will live up to the classic OVA treatment of Black Jack by Dezaki but it could prove entertaining in its own right.

Outbreak Company was a surprisingly laid back and enjoyable show. It's like GATE, but with more focus on comedy and parody. The elf (Myucif ?) was cute as well. No merch as usual though.
