In a curious development, was Professor Layton just leaked for Smash 4 DLC? [Rumor]

Including Layton seems like a puzzling decision to me, but I guess a true gentleman leaves no battle unattended.

I'd put Simon Belmont in about the same league as Layton. The overall sales for both series is close and Simon himself doesn't play as heavy a role in his own series compared to Layton. The Belmont family certainly does, but not Simon himself.

Simon Belmont really isn't that iconic. The only truly iconic Castlevania protagonist IMO is Alucard (though Shanoa is my favorite).
Slime is a big mascot, but do people really want to play as him? I don't think so. It doesn't have much value out of cute merchandise.
I would want to play as Slime more than I would want to play as Snake, Simon Belmont and any other "iconic" character other than Bomberman.

Also the main composer from the Japanese branch of Castlevania is in Smash 4, it should be a nice opportunity for giving Yamane one last change to work with the series that made her famous.

Is a pity because the music selection should be as strong as the MM's one but being a DLC series its stage will probably feature only two remixes.

Never played Rocket Slime I take it?

I played it when the first came out for the GBA. An obscure game about slimes piling up and charging forward. I got bored fast.

As far as cute RPG blobs go, it does nothing special apart from combining into a King Slime. Dragon Quest fans want to play with the main characters, not with the monsters.

DQM's Terry with Slib the Slime!
I can dream

I don't really care at all for Layton, but he'd be a neat addition and he has lots of fans!

Also I really hope the mii costume of K. Rool was put out with no fanfare to act like a preview of K. Rool's design, meaning we'd get SNES rare render Rool instead of Mario strikers Rool, which would be neat.

Still no sign of Wonder Red though 💔

Actually, it's fairly likely that Yamane will continue to contribute music to future Castlevania entries regardless - she's worked on the soundtrack for the last 3 Castlevania pachinko machines, and is probably attached to the current one as well.

This is imperative. With snake, the 3rd party roster is united under one game. Plus he is the most unique newcomer to brawl with his interesting play mechanics
In the words of jeff gertsman of giant bomb

"That implies komami cares about goodwill. And kpnami could gove a fuuuuuck about your goodwill right now"

Thats how i feel about jack frost' moogle, toads, chao ect. I would rather play as the actual folks.

That's really nice, I thought the music for the Pachinko games were done by musicians at Konami.

I have mixed feeling about this. I think Smash should keep Nintendo as its focus, and I find people's obsession with third-party characters a little strange. I fully welcome the characters they have chosen so far because they're all iconic and important to the entire industry. That's why I'd love to see Snake back too. He's not just a random third-party character like, say, Shovel Knight. I love Shovel Knight, but including him would cheapen the roster to me. You don't just get into Smash. Especially not if you've only been in one, multiplatform game.

That said, if they were to add more non-Nintendo characters, who should they go with? Other than Snake, they have all the biggest icons covered already. Look up any "most iconic game characters of all time" list. Sonic, check. Pac-Man, check. Is it time for us to lower the bar just a little bit and allow smaller characters to get in? Personally, I think we have enough third-party characters for now, but for the sake of this argument, let's just say yes. I like the idea of having the biggest Japanese companies represented in Smash. If they were to go for that, Level-5 definitely deserves representation, and Professor Layton would be my personal choice. It's a shame Square Enix don't really have an iconic and recurring mascot that would be fun to play as, because they totally deserve a character. If I could have it my way I would bring in a Konami character, because that's a huge void they haven't filled yet. Bringing back Snake or introducing Simon Belmont - both sound like great ideas to me.

I recently played the Layton series and I absolutely love it. It's a great world with some great characters. If they were to add him to the game, I'd most likely enjoy his inclusion and add a bunch of new songs to my favorites in Sound Test mode. However, I do think it would be weird seeing him next to Sonic, Mega Man, Ryu and Pac-Man. I'll take him any day over Rayman and Shovel Knight though.

But in the case of Layton, most people confuse him for being Nintendo in the West, anyway (as per Nintendo publishing his games that show up on the DS & 3DS). That being said, I'm not 110% sure if this means that Layton is in the game, since voice actors aren't usually this forward about the inclusions of any of their characters. For reference, Adam Howden (the English voice actor for Shulk) hinted at doing a bunch of exciting new projects (at the time), but most of us put two-&-two together. Christopher Robin Miller wouldn't have been this forward unless he wanted Nintendo cut his balls off. This could very well be sarcasm. For all we know, those extra pages could be for another TeamFourStar special (he was Movie Bubbles in Lord Slug Abridged).

Maybe he assumed since his Twitter was locked to only trusted followers that he was safe in talking more casually about it, not fully realizing people would instantly leak it.

Also I think DLC roster selection the base game roster selection are a bit different. DLC so far has been all vets plus a third party new comer. It's generally understood this is pretty much exactly what Japanese Smash fans are asking for in DLC, to be mostly vets with some third party new comers.

So it kind of makes sense in that regard. And outside of Japan, people will just assume Layton is a Nintendo character, as there's no real indication he isn't unless you look further online about the series, as Nintendo basically treats the series as their own for advertising.

If we get an indie character it needs to be Quote from Cave Story.

Rocket Slime was on DS, you're thinking of it's Japan only prequel on GBA. I'd also say Rocket Slime is pretty easily the best Zelda game on DS.

I know he is closely associated with Nintendo, but the fact of the matter is that they don't own the IP. In my book, if you're not a Nintendo-owned character, you have to be something special to get in. People point at Shulk and question his inclusion, but in reality it makes perfect sense. He's a recent first-party character from a new IP. Even if his game didn't do so hot commercially, he's still a Nintendo character. That's something Layton isn't. I know most people won't even care or notice, but it's the details like that that bring out my inner video game nerd.

Regarding the tweet: It's odd and I'm not sure I buy it. I doubt he'd just outright say it like that if it was the case, but we'll see.

Never played a Dragon Quest game, so I don't really know what I'm talking about. But how would Slime work? It doesn't even have hands!

I second Quote. He is pretty much the Mario of indie games to me. He could even have a Curly Brace alt.

There's a Slime support thread on Smashboards with some interesting ideas for a moveset.

The tweet seems sarcastic to me. I really don't think the VA confirmed it and the ninjas would've already been deployed if so.

It doesn't really seem sarcastic to me. He replied months ago to the same tweet saying it was fake and then decided to reply again a month and a half later with a sarcastic reply?

I think he overestimated the security of having his account set to verified followers only.

Yeah, I was talking about the first game. Weren't they named like Rocket Slime and Rocket Slime: Heroes or something like that?

But wouldn't be more interesting to play as Erdrick being able to level up (with the obligatory fanfare) and becoming stronger as he hits or KOs people, making him an interesting character that starts moderately weak but becomes stronger as the match goes on? Or having an actual MP bar that would be depleted when using his powerful special attacks. This way, he would be representing his roots as the first RPG character ever. Robin management mechanics have a certain RPG flavor to them but not in this way.

Slime would be much better playing his usual role as part of a Dragon Quest stage with random spawning monsters that would give fake EXP messages and making 8 bit sounds like in the Duck Hunt stage.

Someone like him, I seriously doubt that he would think that way. Breaking NDA is one of most dangerous thing you could have done to your career.

Knowing Chris personally, I'd rather bet it is sarcasm than any kind of leak.

I'm not surprised with that but I just want to make a sense out of this one. Why did he suddenly decide to answer someone's tweet like 22-24 days later with a sarcasm remark after originally answered that tweet with No?

WUT? Is there any metric you are using to make this assertion other than "I personally like Alucard more than Simon"?

I don't think anyone outside of smash fans care if a character is "iconic" enough. Sakurai adds whoever he wants for whatever reason he wants.

You guys just need to deal with that.

Square has Chocobo, Moogle, maybe Cactuar, Tonberry and..... Well, Cloud, but that's never been a part of Nintendo's history. Even less than Snake. The first 4 could have interesting movesets, though.

Or they could pull a "Duck Hunt" character and have a Moogle mounted on a Chocobo, basically merging the two most iconic FF mascots as one fighter.

Enix has basically everything DQ related, and I find it sort of odd how that's still not a thing.

Yeah, Layton is cool but him before Advance Wars, Wonderful 101, Golden Sun, and Takamaru would be stupid.
And all of those franchises before Splatoon & Rhythm Heaven is equally stupid. The argument of priority can go a number ways.

I don't even like Alucard more than Simon though. You were just assuming things about me. ^_~ The thing is that I rarely even see Simon being mentioned outside of Smash discussions, while Alucard (as well as Soma Cruz) are often mentioned when the subject is Castlevania. That said, I don't think Alucard would be the Castlevania rep should there be one. I think it would be either Simon or Soma Cruz
, but I think it should be Dracula :p

:/ We are never getting a Rhythm Heaven playable rep, are we :/

The warrior of light, the god father. Thats the se rep you need.

I wouldn't say a Rhythm Heaven rep is as guaranteed as the Inklings. But seeing as we almost got one for Smash 4 (& how big RH is overall), I wouldn't count a playable Rhythm Heaven rep out period. For all we know, Sakurai could be finishing up said Rhythm Heaven rep to be Smash 4 DLC. And worst-case scenario, the rep could make a comeback for Smash 5.

I would love to see anyone from Splatoon, Golden Sun, Advance Wars, Wonderful 101, Rhythm Heaven and Mysterious Murasame Castle in next Smash Bros, if they didn't made in via DLC.

I don't know if I'm being serious about this but give me Style Savvy representative.

Any suggestion with other Nintendo Franchise that I couldn't think of?

Layton would be awesome if only because it means we're not through with Newcomer DLC.

But we get Layton and not K Rool? #WhatAboutthePollSakurai

Simon is the first and most recurring Castlevania protagonist. He was in Captain N, DreamMix TV World Fighters, and Konami Wai Wai World, and he's the top billed character in Castlevania Judgment (over Alucard). Simon is far and away the most iconic Castlevania character. He's sort of like the Marth of his series.
