Media Create Sales: Week 34, 2015 (Aug 17 - Aug 23)

Does Media Create adjust their numbers? Or were mistakes made?

I noticed the PS3's LTD went from 10,350,000 to 10,170,000

That's Famitsu as previously pointed, but Media Create adjusts hardware numbers. Usually it's irrelevant, less than 5 units in a year.

Get that critical acclaim!

At 41k (in just a week and a half!) I think Cube Creator 3D is already Arc System Works' best seller this gen. I wonder how far it can go?

Surprised Airou Village DX has that many pre-orders.

Poor Famicom Remix, though :p

How much did the first Famicom Remix sell?

I'm wondering how well Dragon's Dogma Online will do in total.

Similar to Ninokuni, these are two different games sharing a more or less similar scenario. Due to their already very apparent differences and the fact they are developed by different studios I really wouldn´combine the sales.

As of right now the potential I see is that the current 3DS version will have a hard time competing with the bestselling entries like DQ9 and DQ7(ps1) and sell more akin to the original release of DQ8(ps2) instead. Late in the gen release and a graphically more advanced alternative around the same time could lead to some corrosion.

While the U4 DQ11 really has the potential of beeing one of the worst selling entry since more than 25years and DQ3 in the traditional RPG mainline series in Japan, if you just consider the PS4 version. Considering we have no confirmation of further ports for these particular game just yet.
Its also the first mainline Dragon Quest game in about 30 years that is multiplatform (or that gets two version released at the same time if one doesnt want to call it multiplatform). I think Square Enix also concider this when it comes to their sales expectations, so if the PS4 version ends up being the worse selling title compared to other entries, and if the 3DS version ends up selling noticeably less than what DQ9 did on DS, it most likely wont mean much of importance. Its if their expections will be met that matters the most.

[Wii U] Lego Jurassic World (November, 5th)
[Wii U] Disney Infinity 3.0 (November, 12th)
[Wii U] Silver Star Shogi: Kyoutendo Toufuu Raijin (November, 19th)
[Wii U] Taiko no Tatsujin: Atsumete Tomodachi Daisakusen (Novermber, 26th)

November is the month for Wii U. Nintendo needs to move towards a Splatoon bundle at that time.

EDIT: Lego Avengers, Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival, Starfox Rei, and Mario Tennis Ultra Smash are also dated for this year, though. Yokai Watch X JUST DANCE is for this year I guess.

People keep forgetting FExP, or maybe I'm wrong and the game is 2016 in JP as well? :/

Well, it's a 2015 game. But it's not dated yet. Maybe, a Nintendo Direct could clarify some things for the future. I see possible the game being delayed.
It seemed fairly far along at the E3 Treehouse demo. I can see a delay too but more likely for strategic reasons (space from P5 launch, fill out empty Q1, etc).

Seemed likely for a while that DDO would be the next PS4>PS3 based on COMG preorders. MGS Solid V next. DDO looks like it's selling quite well for a game that will be available free lol

Its a special edition, lol, and we don't know how many were actually shipped so its pretty much a meaningless percentage. Given the low COMG numbers, though, I wouldn't expect much.

Such a game will likely be the early goings of PS4->PS3 but its also such a miniscule number at retail that I don't think it matters. We'll have to wait some time before we hear about how it does behind the curtain.

MGSV is the game I want to see the ratio for in sales as well as legs.

I don't understand why people are surprising that the physical version of a F2P game might sell relatively well, especially when said version has some bonus content. PSO2 sold well on PSV.

lol yeah, I know what the game is and the COMG preorder numbers, I guess we had different expectations for it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's supposed to be a limited print. Did we get initial shipment somewhere and I missed it?

I don't know maybe

Funny, they did post 2 blog posts today. But yeah, Nintendo has been pretty low-key with that one (just like all their other collaborations with 3rd-parties), but I don't see the game being delayed. After all, Nintendo never says much about their game until a couple of months before release.

...

Maybe they are waiting to know when P5 comes out to announce a release date, ha ha.

You should know full well by now how my expectations work!

Unless its #FE, I expect billions there.

I have a suspicion that they ARE waiting on P5 to get a date and schedule around that, because these are competing products and rather similar. But given the Fire Emblem IP, and the current strength of the brand, I'd be rather remiss of Nintendo let this one skirt by without some decent campaigning on marketing.

Don't you read the thread enough? :p Next next week's assignment, how many squids became kids became international spy agents.

haha I dunno, I guess not :(. Next weeks assignment sounds good though. There was a distinct lack of squids on my high school curriculum.

isn't persona 5 never coming out?

splatoon is really the only relevant wii u game atm and it isn't too far from holiday, i definitely think it'll surpass mario kart

If Splatoon had been released on Wii, it would have likely been a multi-million seller. While I liked the vast majority of Nintendo Wii games, it is clear they lost the momentum in not proposing a new "core" IP on the same vein.

Road to TGS™.

Dragon Quest XI: In Search of Departed Time
Platforms: PS4, 3DS, NX (tentative), Release Date: 2016 (PS4/3DS Simultaneous)
Publisher: Square Enix, Developer: Orca (PS4), Toy Logic (3DS), Genre: RPG
Notes: Uses Unreal Engine 4 on PS4, while having both a 3D and 2D option on 3DS. The games are built to share a general setup (gameplay, story, etc), but are otherwise made entirely separately. This was notably the first ever game announced for NX, and I believe the first ever traditional Dragon Quest to appear on multiple platforms simultaneously. It also continues Epic's majorly growing presence in the region, and is one of the most extreme cases of multiplatform development alongside Ni no Kuni. We could probably go on about this one for a very long time.

Dragon Quest Builders: To Revive Alefgard
Platforms: PS4, PS3, Vita, Release Date: Q4 2015
Publisher: Square Enix, Developer: Square Enix, Genre: Minecraft
Notes: This title is rather unusual in that it's Square Enix internally developing a competitor to Minecraft. While Minecraft is notably popular in Japan, it hasn't quite reached the heights that it has in the West, so there's room here not only for audiences that have played Minecraft and want a similar game, but also for people who would like Minecraft, but haven't yet tried it (either due to the platforms it's on, its release strategy, or due to it being a Western game). Dragon Quest is also a family brand, which fits well with Minecraft's demographics. You can choose your character's gender in the game.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3
Platforms: 3DS, Release Date: Unknown
Publisher: Square Enix, Developer: Unknown, Genre: Monster Collection RPG
Notes: A long standing monster collection and sequel to the popular Joker line from the Nintendo DS, this is Square Enix continuing to release retail entries in the series despite the extreme success of the mobile game. Whether they'll try to go all in on it in a post Yokai Watch world or try to simply maintain their normal sales volume remains to be seen.

Dragon Quest X: PS4/NX Ports
Platforms: PS4/NX, Release Date: Unknown
Publisher: Square Enix, Developer: Square Enix, Genre: MMORPG
Notes: Dragon Quest X, Square Enix's ongoing successful MMO, will be ported to platforms that are actually relevant in Japan in 2016+, as the previous generation is coming to a close. This will likely surprise no one.

Dragon Quest of the Stars
Platforms: iOS/Android, Release Date: 2015
Publisher: Square Enix, Developer: Unknown, Genre: RPG
Notes: Following up on Dragon Quest Monsters: Super Light, this is Square Enix's next major f2p Dragon Quest game. It looks very high effort for a mobile title, and given the success of Super Light, it will be fascinating to see how this one goes.

God Eater Resurrection
Platforms: PS4, Vita, Release Date: Winter
Publisher: Bandai Namco, Developer: Bandai Namco, Genre: Hunting Action
Notes: This is an enhanced remake of the first game.

7th Dragon III Code VFD
Platforms: 3DS, Release Date: October 15th, 2015
Publisher: Sega, Developer: Sega, Genre: RPG
Notes: This is the third 7th Dragon 2020 title. It's made by Sega this time, and is somewhat unusual in that Sega has largely stopped making this kind of game since their transition to a digital first company. It doesn't look very expensive, mind, but it still is something of an anomaly. It will be interesting to see if they get more experimental in the physical space again.

Digimon World: Next Order
Platforms: Vita, Release Date: 2016
Publisher: Bandai Namco, Developer: Unknown, Genre: RPG
Notes: This is Namco's second Digimon Vita game. This time, while it looks like it might share some art assets and technology with the previous game, it appears much more family friendly. Whereas the previous game targeted people who liked Digimon when they were younger, but have since gotten much older, this one appears to be targeting all ages. Like the previous title, you can choose your character's gender in the game.

Digimon Linkz
Platforms: iOS/Android, Release Date: 2015
Publisher: Bandai Namco, Developer: Unknown, Genre: RPG
Notes: This again seems to share art assets and/or technology with the previous Vita game, but is a collection based mobile RPG. It looks really nice for a mobile game due to this. English reporting on Japanese mobile games is abysmal so I can't tell you much more about it except that it's free 2 play, which you should just assume for every mobile game and I will assume you make that assumption for the rest of the list.

Exist Archive
Platforms: PS4/Vita, Release Date: November 26th, 2015
Publisher: Spike Chunsoft, Developer: Tri-Ace, Genre: RPG
Notes: This is the spiritual successor to Valkyrie Profile 1 with many of the same staff. The publisher is a bit interesting since Tri-Ace has an active relationship with Square Enix given Star Ocean 5, and the game seems a bit higher profile than what Spike Chunsoft normally puts out. It likely speaks to both at least some remaining risk aversion on Square Enix's part and increasing ambitions from Spike Chunsoft. Also, it's notably that Tri-Ace seems to be entirely back on dedicated device games after failing to succeed in mobile despite being bought by a mobile games company.

Yomawari
Platforms: Vita, Release Date: October 29th, 2015
Publisher: Nippon Ichi, Developer: Nippon Ichi, Genre: Horror, Action Adventure
Notes: Nippon Ichi has been expanding which genres they work in a bit lately and this seems to be a continuation of things like that firefly game. It's nothing too out there though.

Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book
Platforms: PS4, PS3, Vita, Release Date: November 19th, 2015
Publisher: Koei Tecmo, Developer: Gust, Genre: RPG
Notes: This is the 17th Atelier game. Yep.

Attack on Titan
Platforms: PS4, PS3, Vita, Release Date: Winter
Publisher: Koei Tecmo, Developer: Omega Force, Genre: Action
Notes: This is supposedly not a Musou style game, and it's one of the first games Koei Tecmo has made the PS4 the lead platform. Omega Force had some success with their last genre expansion in Toukiden, so we'll see how this one turns out.

Darius Burst: Chronicle Saviours
Platforms: PS4, Vita, PC, Release Date: Winter
Publisher: Chara-Ani, Developer: Pyramid, Genre: Shmup
Notes: It's a port of the arcade game, with four player multiplayer on PS4.

Omega Labyrinth
Platforms: Vita, Release Date: November 19th, 2015
Publisher: D3 (Bandai Namco), Developer: Matrix, Genre: Vita Game
Notes: *Scrapes the bottom of the barrel, keeps digging.*

Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir
Platforms: PS4/PS3/Vita, Release Date: January 14, 2016
Publisher: Atlus (Sega), Developer: Vanillaware, Genre: Action RPG
Notes: This is an enhanced port of Odin Sphere and the plan is to do more things like this.

Yo-kai Watch Dance: Just Dance
Platforms: Wii U, Release Date: Unknown
Publisher: Level 5, Developer: Ubisoft, Genre: Rhythm
Notes: This is probably not the team up you expected. I wouldn't hold my breath for amazing sales. However, it is clear that Ubisoft is interested in some continued Japanese expansion and that Level 5 wants to keep making new Yokai Watch spin-offs. The dancing Yo-kai Watch app on mobile is very popular.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky Second Chapter Evolution
Platforms: Vita, Release Date: December
Publisher: Nihon Falcom, Developer: Nihon Falcom, Genre: RPG
Notes: This is the next in the line of enhanced ports to Vita from Falcom.

Otome Games
Platforms: Vita, Release Date: Various
Publishers: Various, Developers: Various, Genre: Visual Novel
Notes: Eight zillion Otome games were announced for Vita. Since we never discuss these for the most part, I'm just grouping these under one block, since the notable thing here is that all the Otome games went to Vita, so the Otome audience will exist on Vita.

Dead or Alive Xtreme 3
Platforms: PS4, Vita, Release Date: Unknown
Publisher: Koei Tecmo, Developer: Team Ninja, Genre: Perv, Sports
Notes: The PS4 and Vita version have different features and different subtitles. It's unclear what the game's business model is yet.

Girl Friend Beta: Summer Vacation Spent With You
Platforms: Vita, Release Date: November 19th, 2015
Publisher: Bandai Namco, Developer: Unknown, Genre: Vita Game
Notes: Based off the popular smartphone game.

Summon Night 6: Lost Borders
Platforms: PS4, Vita, Release Date: Spring 2016
Publisher: Bandai Namco, Developer: Media Vision, Genre: Strategy RPG
Notes: It looks pretty high effort for what it is, as you would expect with Media Vision. This is also a change in developer for the series.

Nobunaga’s Ambition: Tenshouki with Power-Up Kit HD
Platforms: Vita, PC, Release Date: November 12th, 2015
Publisher: Koei Tecmo, Developer: Omega Force, Genre: Strategy
Notes: This is an enhanced port of the 1994 game.

Tokyo Twilight Ghost Hunters: Daybreak Special Gigs
Platforms: PS4, PS3, Vita, Release Date: November 2015
Publisher: Arc System Works, Developer: Arc System Works, Genre: RPG
Notes: This is one of those enhanced edition re-releases you normally see come out for free with Western PC games, but that business model doesn't really exist in Japan.

Refrain’s Underground Labyrinth and the Witch Brigade
Platforms: Vita, Release Date: Winter
Publisher: Nippon Ichi, Developer: Nippon Ichi, Genre: Dungeon RPG
Notes: It's a first person dungeon RPG directed by the person who directed The Witch and the Hundred Knights.

The Asterisk War: The Academy City on the Water
Platforms: Vita, Release Date: 2016
Publisher: Bandai Namco, Developer: Unknown, Genre: Simulation Action
Notes: This is your standard Bandai Namco anime tie in game.

Taiko Drum Master: Atsumete Tomodachi Daisakusen!
Platforms: Wii U, Release Date: November 26, 2015
Publisher: Bandai Namco, Developer: Unknown, Genre: Rhythm
Notes: This is a follow-up to the previous Wii U entry.

General Notes:
- There does seem to be a decrease in the number of PS3 titles getting announced. We'll see if that holds by the end of TGS.
- There's already almost as many Wii U games as there were by the end of the last Road to TGS!!!
- While there aren't many 3DS games announced, this shouldn't be very surprising given most 3DS games are either announced shortly before their Spring/Summer release, or announced in the Spring/Summer for a major Fall release. Also, the NX is almost assuredly coming out next year, so I'd expect that to lower the number of 3DS games being made a fair amount.
- There are like no good places to look up newly announced Japanese mobile games in English anymore, so this list will sadly be incredibly lacking on that front. Don't take this to mean a lack of mobile development though. It's an artifact of me not being able to read Japanese.
- Given I was really generous and basically allowed the announcements to start with anything post E3, this list is pretty barren so far. While Square Enix did make a number of E3 announcements, basically no other third party Japanese publishers showed up in a meaningful capacity. That said, neither the Sony event nor TGS itself has happened yet.
- I'll wait on doing publisher specific commentary until we hit the end of the road.

Thanks for the interesting post Nirolak.

Certainly would expect to see less PS3 games this year unless it's an already announced cross gen title. I would expect new game announcements to be a mixture of cross gen and PS4 only with the needle leaning more towards PS4 only.

3DS games should slow down and I think it'll mostly just be low budget games and spin offs rather than fully fledged games being announced (other than the ones we know of already).

Hopefully this year will fulfil the promises the organisers have been making.

Also, Just announced that [Fushigi no Gensokyo The Tower of Desire] has sold through more than 50,000 units on PlayStation Vita.

If anything, I'd imagine any and all middleware based games (all that UE4) are going to start showing up on PS4/NX as the old gen retires. Anything that isn't strapped to Phyre or built on proprietary tools or outright just bought is going to go more and more multi-plat in Japan.

DQXI being already slated for it is telling enough on what the outlook is for the domestic market, but still cannot pass up the PS4's worldwide successes unless they prove to be completely unreceptive which will take more releases.

Road to TGS™.

Nice and exhaustive post.

About 3DS, there are many other games that will be shown during TGS, and some of them might be potentially big, such as Monster Hunter X, Monster Hunter Stories and Disney Magic Castle 2. There's also new PriPara slated for October.

Great post Nirolak!
Also, funny WiiU statistic. Expecting PS3/PS4 to be replaced by PS4/NX in the future too (even if they announce it later, since not every publisher can afford to say it like S-E before more details are given).

Right, that's what I mean, the big 3DS games at TGS are usually announced before the Road to TGS window starts, since they're so large they want a full 9-12+ month marketing cycle.

I'm not sure how many NX announcements we're actually going to get though. Seeing as how it doesn't exist yet. There are always a few games announced to be in development for a next gen console before release but I don't expect it to be more than a handful if any at this point until NX is confirmed.
