The writing was on the wall:
- a minor upgrade to GT5
- launched at PS4 launch
- little-to-no advertising

I'm a huge fan of GT but skipped 6 for reason 1.

I think not porting it to PS4 was the best decision unless they went and really improved a bunch of stuff. Otherwise you end up with something like Forza 5.

Suffice to say, GT7 needs to revealed in a big way and have momentum through to release and beyond.

GT needs some major changes in approach.

But their knowledge with some modern game development would be a dream come true.

I think they knew it was doomed to die, but also underestimated just how badly it would.

Releasing after the PS4 launch was disasterous because it turned out current gen uptake was so high, last gen was left behind really quickly.

I also can't imagine the game was a big monetary cost to make or market but it bought PD a bit of time and got Sony a little money because of how minor the upgrade was and how any new tech will definitely make it to GT7. Maybe that's me being cynical though.

Well, not too worried here. It launched at an ancient platform right before the ps4/One and the game clearly made some steps in terms of tech for their engine's next gen potential. Didn't even buy it myself, but am definitely looking forward to GT7.

After the disappointing GT5, GT6 felt like the game GT5 should have been and fixed a lot of problems that 5 had.

It was just a shame it came out as the PS4 was launching because it was a excellent racer and a great GT game. I'm actually surprised they didn't get a relaunch on PS4 to fill the gap until GT7 comes out.

Should have been a cross gen game, it came out too close to PS4 launch and the PS3 was quickly forgotten by the market. Imagine if GT6 was a launch title for PS4! It would have sold double what it has at this point.

The game was great though and a real return to form.

I skipped 6 because the PS4 released and I hoped for a "remaster".
Release was way too late to sell good.

That's a ridiculously bad number for the series. They better step up their effort with GT7, no fkucing prologue please.

What did they expect releasing it after the PS4 had launched? Should have been a PS4 game. They could have delayed it and made it a next gen game. Sony released a lot of games at the end of the PS3 gen that they could have saved for the PS4. We wouldn't be getting the "ps4 has no games" complaints

GT6 was the first main GT i skipped but congrats nonetheless. I still love the series and i look forward to GT7!

Edit:I just realized that these numbers are not exactly "good" compared to the other entries of the series...i hope GT7 brings back the ambition of the older entries (before GT5) and i'm sure the series will get back on track regarding sales.

That's pretty abysmal by GT standards. Sony wanted to squeeze every last bit of profit from the GT5 engine though, so it's understandable why it's on PS3. It just should have came out in 2012.

One thing for sure, Sony and PD HAVE to nail GT7. The competition is too fierce for this genre now.

Damn, that's a really awful number. I knew it didn't do too hot (since Polyphony refuses to update their sales list with GT6 after almost 2 years), but not that bad. Personally, I thought it did something like 4-5 million copies. Even that would be bad and a huge decline in sale for a main GT game, but 2.37m is just, wow.

Wow, not even 1/4th of what GT5 sold... that's pretty disastrous.

Then again, the release timing for the game was comically awful and not at least making it cross-gen ala LBP3 was short sighted.

I'd expect the next one to do a lot better, but yeah, Sony fucked up GT6's release badly.

Interesting how GT5 is still selling despite GT6 being out. I think its a mix of less advertising, not enough notable features to warrant an upgrade and the biggest factor being PS4 adoption being quick.

I feel like this is the end of the GT6 and we will be getting a GT7 announcement soon.

It'll be interesting to see what GT7 is like after GT6 dropping the ball imo.

I'm positive it will look graphically amazing, play really well as all GT games do and have myriads of content, but it'll interesting to see how the standard cars affect the overall quality of the game. Time will tell I guess!

That's what happens when you launch it on the wrong console, at the wrong time, with the wrong marketing, and with only incremental changes from it's predecessor.

Last gen was not kind to GT. The franchise built up on PS1 and PS2 destroyed on PS3. Even though GT5 sold well the back-lash was very apparent, GT6 launched too late and GT5 put off a lot of people including me. And of course the quality franchise it was once known for now cut up into premium and standard content.

PD needs to go the GT3 route with GT7, you dont need 5000 cars and 1000 tracks if less than half show current gen quality. Focus on making it the consistent franchise it once was, make tracks just as important with detail and features. PD can fix this easily but its up to them if content is more important or quality.

Sony has to give owners confidence that their consoles will still get 1st party games late in its lifecycle.

They should go multiplatform. Sure other things need fixing, but that would make sense considering how big (and expensive) those games are.

So I was right when I said it bombed. Sony's handling of this IP has been incredibly bad in recent years. Yet Evolution is the studio punished and not PD.

Halo should go multiplatform too.

Yeah even with the GT5 servers closed down.Actually maybe that was one of the reasons they closed down the GT5 servers, because they wanted to force people move on to GT6.

GT6, Puppeteer, Beyond etc. all felt like they were thrown under the bus.

GT is a Sony IP in case you didn't know.

Releasing this a week after the Euro PS4 launch was one of the worst business decisions in gaming.

Game was 3 years in development, what's a year or 2 more for retooling and making it a PS4 exclusive, then we would've had a GT game on PS4 right about now.

Don't think this was a maybe. Think this was definitely the reason.

Sony already expressed that they never expected the PS4 to do so well so early in it's lifecycle. The PS2 was popular for a long time after the PS3 launched and probably they expected a same kind of scenario, which made releasing GT6 on PS3 perfectly reasonable. Of course reality took them by surprise.

I still play GT6 and enjoy it for what it is. Still a small update for GT5 though. I did play that game to shreds.

Remember when Sony closed the GT5 servers prematurely so that people would buy GT6? Guess that didn't really work out. I'm glad that asshole move didn't prove profitable.

Except it didn't took them by surprise. They barely advertised the game, a clear sign that they knew it was going to bomb.

Not sure, they may have overestimated it's appeal thinking that it would more or less sell itself to the fanbase which is huge.

man that's bad. Hopefully GT7 returns to its glory, but now Forza is just as good.

I was one of the people who said that releasing it on the PS3 was a good idea, so did Sony, obviously, but it clearly wasn't and I'm sure it didn't have the outcome they had in mind even if their projections were conservative, all things considered.

I suspect that hurt GT6 sales more than helped. The screwed up the timing pure and simple. It came to close to GT5 and in particular too close to when GT5 was still very active thanks to all the patching changes and it came way too close to PS4 launch. Throw in lack of differentiation to GT5 and fairly minimal hype/advertising and it was doomed (in hindsight which is cheap but fairly accurate).

Turning off the servers was a dick move though and certainly a contributor to why i skipped GT6 (alongside the factors above). I wasn't going to buy it just because GT5 took too long to arrive and took a while to stabilize and I certainly wasn't going to be forced towards it.
