Super Mario Maker |OT| Miyamoto Simulator 2015

For fans of traditional ghost house levels I made this:

Multiple paths, secrets, ghosts, and wizards, who could ask for more? There's 3 main paths through the level, all varying in difficulty, much like the different paths you would take in a SMW ghost house. I hope everyone enjoys it, I'm going to start going through levels on GAF since the leaderboards aren't changing much right now.

These are the people who made an advanced penis-detection system for Miiverse. It wouldn't surprise me if they have something even more thorough for this game.

The only inappropriate things I've seen in any levels came by way of Miiverse comments.

I've actually flagged a penis level, you can catch them by going to courses Up & coming, scroll through all the new levels until you find something. I don't doubt they have moderators for this purpose, but I like to make sure the community stays clean.

Uploaded a level I made for my five year old god son and his 7 year old older sister. Called it "I made this for a five year old". Not a difficult level, just felt like uploading it.

Will do once I'm home from work!

Nezumi, I tried yours a bit ago. Loved it!!

It had a really excellent amount of difficulty, and was decorated very nicely on top of it. I only died at the very beginning once or twice (my own fault), and then got through the rest of the level but felt awesome doing it. One of the more fun levels I've played. Great job!

Reposting this, since it's been a few pages:

Alright Mario Maker GAF. A friend of mine together with Nintendo started a small Mario Maker Contest. He asked me to post the video here, since he doesn't have an account:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46Sgnc78w18

►How you can win?
1.) Write a comment and mention 3 amiibo you want to win.
2.) Create a level in Super Mario Maker and send me the ID.
Of course you can write a comment and create a level. So you have double chance to win!

►Attention! If you want to win you have to be a subscribear.

►What you can win?
1.) For writing a comment you get the chance to win a amiibo.
2.) If you win the Super Mario Maker contest you will get 2 amiibo or a Wii U game (choose Bayonetta 2, The Legend of Zelda - The Wind Waker HD or Captain Toad Treasure Tracker).
Attention! Nintendo has only PAL-games. If you live outside the PAL region you only can win 2 amiibo.

►Is there a contest topic?
Yes! The topic is "skyline". Create a level with the skyline of a famous city. Also it can be a fictitous city or one out of the Nintendo universe. There are no other restrictions.

►I created a level, what now?
Upload the level in Super Mario Maker. "BeardBear_YT" has to be a part of the course title.
After uploading send me the level ID by a private message or e-mail (beardbear@hotmail.com).

►Can I submit more than one level?
No. But you can change your level everytime, just send me a new ID.

►Deadline?
You have time until Sep. 27, 23:59 PM (GMT +0100) to send me a level or write a comment.

►Should I try to copy other levels?
What do you think? ;)
Be fair, please. I will upload a Top 10 video so all the viewers can give me a hint if something is wrong.

I hope you will enjoy the contest. Share it with your friends and maybe the next will come soon!
Happy making! :)

Since we have several creative heads in here, I thought you guys might be interested. I have already finished a level, but haven't uploaded it yet.

Edit:
I know we already have a contest of our own, but eh, why not a second one? xD

39 stars... Really wanna get 50. Shameless repost of my levels! I'll play yours if you send some my way.

Castle Siege
ID: CA34-0000-003A-B3C8
Yeah it's a little long and not exactly for Mario n00bs, but it's fair the whole way through!

The Path Less Taken
ID: 28CB-0000-003B-0BBC
Ghost Mansion in SMW! Some paths are treacherous meant to put a damper on your mood, while other paths are meant to reward and excite!

Well, I tried those two levels (I wanted to try the others, but it took too much time). Here are my thoughts:
  • Castle Siege: The first screen is constantly shaking because of the Twomps on the upper floor, which I find a little annoying. There may be a little too many things in the first room too. The concept is good, but I'd rather move it to another room further in the level (I tend to think that the first room/screen should be easy and danger-free, but it may be a pet-peeve of mine).
The second room: it can be tricky to time the jump for the cannonball because of the flamethrower, since they don't share the same activation timer, making the player wait for the perfect time to make their jump. As a result, the players can't advance until there is a perfect window to jump, and there is nothing they can do about it. Now, when there is a window, the time to act can be rather large. Mixed feelings about this one.
The third room is the one with the Twomps and the music blocs. I find music blocs and trampolines/bumpers annoying to use for jumps, since the timing is rather strict, and this is made worse because we are standing right above lava. Thanksfully, we can just jump over the Twomps to proceed further, so I'd say that part is fair.
The part with the P block on bumpers: same problem as mentioned above. Miss the jump to enter the part where blocks are turned into coins, and the bumper will send you straight into lava.
Room with the circling Boos and the rotating flames line in the middle: same as the second room, but much worse. The player is forced to wait for the opportunity to pass through, while dodging the flames coming from the right (the player can't really run and crounch: the flames are just long enough to hit Mario if he crounches right under them). And it happens not once, but twice in a row. I stopped there after 10 tries or so, since I wanted to try other levels and I don't have hours to spend on a single level.
Overall, the flow of the level is quite slow, preventing the player to move around, and the screens are cramped with hazards and traps. Now, you advertized your level as being hard, and this is not Kaizo level, but I find this level just frustrating to play, not really fun. May be interesting for players who are looking for a challenge of course.
  • The Path Less Taken: Upper path (to the trap room): too many sound effects. The one when you arrive in the room should be enough. You also can't move through the room without shrinking down (the lower path is impossible to pass as Adult Mario, you are forced to get hit). In all, a trap room which seems solely designed to make the player lose their Adult form. Not really something I like.
Path up the vine, with the Dry Bones: too much of them, it is very difficult/impossible to see the bones the bigger ones are throwing since they are "off-screen". This whole section should be moved down a few blocks.
Grandfather clocks: too many sound effects. I guess you wanted to re-create a tick-tock or something similar, but it is not really enjoyable. If you free too many Boos, there are little to no space to move to get Yoshi, not to mention the jump needed to reach him is difficult because the platform is not long enough to make a running jump easily (since only this kind of jump can help us reach the upper layer of blocks, and we also have the armada of Boos restricting our movements). I would make the platform where the grandfather clocks are longer, or lower the upper blocks, and remove a couple of Boos (unless you want the player to die to memorize where the Boos are and thus not free them the next time, but that is called Trial-and-error gameplay, which is a big no-no by my book).
Addendum: with some retrospection, I now understand what you wanted to do: indicate which were the good blocs and which were the bad ones, which is a good idea all things considered, but sadly the sound effects remain annoying.
Nothing to say about the Yoshi section, it is OK.
After entering a door further on the level, you must make jump above hazards while on a moving skeleton platform. However, the timing can be tricky, and you only have one chance, since the skeleton platform will disappear. What's worse is that you can't go back whence you can from, so if you miss your window, the only thing you can do is die. I would replace the skeleton platform with normal ones which don't despawn, and/or move the door to ground level.
Last section: not enough breathing room to use the shell to free the passage. It is doable (I did complete this level), but needlessly annoying (I equipped the shell a couple of times by accident instead of bouncing back on it and throwing it away again). You may want to use Koopas instead.

Overall, I think you should maybe dial down the difficulty. While I certainly make too easy levels (I make them for family members who didn't play Mario in ages), I think you are doing the opposite. Not to mention that if you make your levels a little easier, more people will complete them, and you will win more Stars. It is all about balancing challenge and fun, and avoid frustration.

Recap post of my levels.

There's a lot on the list tonight. I'll try to get through what I can in about 2 hours.

Great stream. I subbed to you. Watching you play shows me that I need to do a better job at explaining a few things with in game mechanics (wall spin jump) somehow.

Thanks for playing

I figured I should do an official "launch" of this level!

zQ1vDqO.png

Mario and Yoshi have been through a lot together. But can we really call them friends?

This level features several hard-to-find shortcuts that are ACTUALLY shortcuts. One of them, though tricky to get to, lets you pass like half the level. Don't worry though, when I submitted this level, I got through it the "long" way. It's very doable for Mario vets.

The arrows in this level are your guide. Follow them on the road to success, or ignore them at your peril.

Please try it, and if you give me feedback, please leave a code for one of your levels so I can do the same for you. THANK YOU GAF!

Beat it, looks like I was first.

Ok this is my first real and serious stab at designing an intermediate-difficulty level. Took me a few hours and here is the result !

70D8-0000-0049-889F

Happy Swimming is an underwater course that requires you to navigate Mario through a lot of marine obstacles ! As always, there are areas where there are more than one way to tackle the obstacles and so feel free to play to your style. There are also secrets to discover and they are very rewarding.

I am personally quite happy with how this level turned out. I really really hope you guys have a crack at it and let me know your feedbacks. I want to go back and tweak this course more to be as good as possible. I would especially appreciate anybody here to record/stream themselves playing this level so I can sort of see how you guys would tackle this course. I want to see how Mario beginners to Mario masters (like Sixfortyfive... if you read this post, please stream it so I can see how you'll tackle this level) think about this course ! Anyways, please enjoy :)

I posted my level last night but it was late and seemingly overlooked [given the amount of plays it received]. Thankfully, a few GAF members had a run through of it and had fun, so I appreciate that. It's not entirely surprising to see the low number of plays, given the number of courses, but if any of you are bored, feel free to give it a try! I could definitely use the stars, I'm sitting at 4 currently. :(

As for what it's about...

Escort! Goomba Goes Home
ID: DEBB-0000-0045-CD09

Story:

Once upon a time there was a Goomba who had a tendency to venture off on his own. This worried his mother and father, as they frequently urged him not to explore too far away from home given the dangers that surrounded them, especially that of a certain "mustachioed plumber" who claimed victim to several other of their kind. This didn't stop Goomba, however, as he continued to trek further and further away from home until one day he wandered too far. Lost, the Goomba now wanders in-panic, trying to find his way home to his loving parents.

A mustachioed man appears...

Yes, that's right! In a bizarre twist, this Goomba is worth saving, not one for instant slaughter. Make your way through the level as you try to keep the Goomba's path clear of obstructions, as well as making sure not to use any part of the path that he will need.

Can you lead the Goomba home?

Discaimer: This is the second level I've uploaded, but I will not talk of the first. It embarrasses me. Any help/tips/tricks/opinions are highly welcome. I will take any/all of your constructive criticism, so if you don't like something, don't hesitate to let me know!

I have taken my level back to the workshop (along with getting some inspiration from several Lost World levels), so I was wondering if I could get some feedback on "Getting There": 6F6C-0000-0049-9BDA

What did you think? did you find any shortcuts? Feedback plz XD And you probably were first!

The only annoying bit was the third slide, everything else was memorization, I saw the paths, wasn't sure if it was a troll or not so I didn't take them probably would have made things easier lol it was fun overall though and well thought out.

Hello!

I played your stage and I rather enjoyed it. Your multiple paths are a nice touch and a good use of the P block.
You may want to remove the pipes which give infinite 1UP in both the normal and bonus areas.
Regarding your bonus area: too many sound effects. Between the samba and the "ding-dong!" each time the cannons ejects coins, it can be a little annoying to the ears. Same thing for the disco music at the end of the stage which overlaps with the victory music. Now, I won't lie, I really dislike sound effects in general, since many players abuse them.
The final stretch with the wall of fishes and the autoguided bullet bill was a nice idea!

My goal was to invent an interesting mechanic that would be unique to my stage - as that's what Mario games are all about, right? Then it was a case of finding interesting and evolving challenges that derive from that central idea.

Would love to get your feedback!

Quoted for later!

I made a new stage tonight

(image)

Hello!

Your stage begins with fish swimming straight at you, and a looooot of Bloopers. That is something that I think you should avoid for a first screen (not to mention those Bloopers can follow you during the entire stage, since your progression is slowed down constantly by hazards and the spike maze). The first line of blocks is difficult/impossible to unlock between the bloopers and the spikes at the bottom of the screen (Mario will bounce down after hitting a block).
Later, there are several Bullet Bills cannon. One of them is too high, making it nearly impossible to swim past it in Adult Mario form. There are several 2 blocks entries like that throughout the stage.
Not really a fan of mazes made out entirely of spikes. I noticed the pixel arts though (the stiletto-heeled boot at the end), but I'm not really fond of those. The smiley wasn't necessary.
Overall, your stage felt rather chaotic, especially at the beginning. I got a "let's throw everything at the player!" kind of feeling.

The only annoying bit was the third slide, everything else was memorization, I saw the paths, wasn't sure if it was a troll or not so I didn't take them probably would have made things easier lol it was fun overall though and well thought out.

Haha, I wasn't trolling :D I don't really like troll levels unless they're Ghost Houses.
I used the arrows to try and help people understand what I wanted them to do, especially in some of the tricky "long jump + R late" areas.

Thanks so much for playing the level! I see you found one of the shortcuts, too :) Very cool!

Heyy! Thanks for checking out my level. It was the one with the moving airship on tracks. It was cool to see someone else playing it! There are some secrets on the ship itself (3 1-Ups) and two ways to catch up with the ship from the harbour (start of the level)

I didn't think about making the Bowser fight mandatory. It may be a good idea.

It was so much work getting the ship right. Some things just didn't work and I'll build upon that idea in a later level.

That's totally fine if you cannot stream. Any feedback whether in video form or a post here is appreciated :)

Just finished it. For now, you have a 100.0% Clear Rate! :D

I always took the upper path, by the way. Also, I used the P-Block and got to the secret door! The last bit was fun, swimming through the fish gates.

The downsides I'd say is that it's very unforgiving on some stuff. There's a section where you have three "aisles" and really only the lower one seemed passable to me. Of course, there's a ? block with a mushroom in it... but hitting it often knocks you into the death plants below it.

There are a lot of powerups, which is good because I doubt I'd finish it otherwise. I abused the invincibility frames more than a couple of times XD

I gave it a star, though, as I still had fun. I'd recommend reducing the number of powerups but ALSO making it a bit more forgiving! Try two aisles instead of three in that one area, for instance... swimming is tricky enough as it is!

Super Mario Bros. 3 Was a Play

4072-0000-0049-9AB6

Miyamoto confirmed Mario 3 was a play, so I emphasized that a bit with a remake of Mario 3 1-1.

A SMB3 1-1 level re-creation with a new spin put on it. The idea is nice, but doesn't change 1-1 that much.

You can now add difficulties for the levels on the Nintendolife level sharing portal and embed levels on your own website.

It's a great tool especially if you want to have an overview over all your levels and you can easily share them all with codes, screenshots and descriptions on one page: http://www.nintendolife.com/super-mario-maker/users/cyba89 (shamelessy bumping my levels here :p)
It also would be cool if everyone from here who uses this tool add a GAF-tag to you level so we see them here: http://www.nintendolife.com/super-mario-maker/tags/gaf

Just played it. Nice, simple little course. It was refreshing, honestly. The Pirahna Plants are the biggest danger as you're not really sure if they're gonna be there or not, and when you're about to land all you can do is pray one doesn't pop out, lol. Overall though a nice little level.

Cool ! Will take those into considerations ! Gonna remove some 1Ups, some power-ups and music appropriately then :) Seriously thankful for all your feedbacks !

You guys are clearly better Mario swimmers than me because unlocking the secret area was very difficult for me even as the creator of this course, which is why I thought those players deserve all the goodies they can get lol !

The part with the three-way divide is definitely slightly trollish because of that ?-block at the end. I tested it out myself and knew that was going to happen, haha... so I always go with the middle row, actually, since I found it the easiest. I will consider making this area slightly more manageable. I was just trying to increase the difficulty from 2-way split to 3-way split at that point.

Also, I'll be streaming NeoGAF levels on Friday starting at 9PM PST. So I'll be sure to play your level on during the stream.

Hey guys, so after my first course got 200+ plays with a 0% completion rate I just finished rebalancing it.

less insane kaizo, more challenging/punishing platforming

be on the lookout for hidden power ups, 1 ups, and even a huge shortcut

Alright guys, I just made a tutorial for my first stage (Spin For Koopa).

This will give you an idea of how to beat it. If you wanna just see me beat it without all of the fails at first you can skip to the end.

Here's the code to try it: FC1A-0000-0044-7E62

I'm making a tutorial for my second stage right now.

Was really happy with this level, sad to see it at two plays, so I'll repost it once. I want to see some reception to this idea.

Made a level with an unique twist. My girlfriend tried it and she didn't get the idea of map at all. I would love to get some comments, do I need to communicate it better? The whole twist of the map went flying straight over her head.

I'm going to add more to this stage if it gets a good reception for sure. I really like the idea in it.

Just played it. Nice, simple little course. It was refreshing, honestly. The Pirahna Plants are the biggest danger as you're not really sure if they're gonna be there or not, and when you're about to land all you can do is pray one doesn't pop out, lol. Overall though a nice little level.

Please try mine! 73A1 - 0000 - 0049 - 51EA

I kept dying at the last chunk of the level, but I had thoroughly enjoyed it. Great use of Yoshi's mechanics.

So, you guys are all well aware of the popularity of Metroid stages... Well, I took inspiration from these mini "mariovanias..." and made just that. This level is my best yet (of my puzzler series) and it took about 6-8 hours to craft and fine tune. This is my second venture into this sub genre for Mario Maker. I made an office themed Metroidvania level before --"Another Day at the Office" (0479-0000-0034-C6F9). This turned out to be one of my most popular levels. There was a problem though... the level focused solely on puzzles and without any prompt. While it provided fun and challenge for many players, even more were stumped-- put off by its sometimes obtuse nature.

I've rectified these problems with my new level. In "The Mysterious Castle Dracula", you can complete it in MANY different ways. The level is not at all linear, and how you solve the puzzle is entirely up to you because I've included multiple paths... solutions... even red herrings. Not only that, but I added a bit of flavor text to help the player via miiverse posts. It really turned out splendidly, and I even included a pretty unique mini boss encounter and a sweet boss fight at the end. I put a ton of effort into this stage so I would really appreciate it if you guys could all play this level and give me some feedback. Star it if you like it, because that really helps it get played by more people! I'll gladly return the favor if you PM me some of your stages you need testing/feedback.

Thanks so much for the help in advance, and I hope you have a blast. I have been running it myself to try to come up with challenges.

PS. There's 3 hidden 1-up mushrooms, a red kuribo shoe and dancing wiggler for you guys to find.

Hey, I just wanted to say that this level is awesome. You did an amazing job "dressing" the level, and it has an awesome non-linear approach. I did run out of time my last time out, and I feel like I'm missing something (so many pipes that DON'T ACTUALLY TAKE YOU ANYWHERE OMG :( ) but I'm going to keep playing it! Great, great work.

YAY! I can't wait to see it :D Let me know where I can find your stream :D

Greatest apologies! I accidentally used my old screenshot/ID, since I had to remove and tweak the course a bit and forgot to update the screenshot/ID. :(

It's fixed now! To update, the ID is now: ID: DEBB-0000-0045-CD09.

Sorry again about that.

Just played it! I was especially curious because I've been thinking about making an escort level. I was wondering what I was going to "need" the Goomba for, so when I got to the end I got it.

I liked what you had planned out here, and I actually got through most of the level, until the goomba and a bob-omb got stuck on the VERY LAST spring, just before the exit. Since I got stuck, the next time I just killed the first Koopa and carried him to the end of the level, not even letting the Goomba out of the box. XD
So if you needed somebody to break your level, there you go :p

I actually enjoyed it quite a bit either way though, and the little Goomba house with mom and dad at the end was a nice ending touch.

I kept dying at the last chunk of the level, but I had thoroughly enjoyed it. Great use of Yoshi's mechanics.
THANK YOU! :D I'm curious to see where you actually died and if it was near the end of the level or just the first half... the end of the level itself is actually pretty easy, I wanted to give it a nice come down after a tricky middle.

Mario seems to be stuck in the same room, whatever he tries to do, he just can't seem to escape. Can you help him out of there in time?

A pretty easy room (still, some people managed to die.... ), but I really liked the idea and tried to work it into a level.

Okay, big post containing all my levels incoming. I won't include images because... that would be 20 images. No, too many for one post. xD
I will assign Difficulty from 1-10 to the levels. It's just relative to other of my levels, no indicator how hard compared to other stuff they really are. If there is a "X-Y" it just means that there are optional sections/challenges that increase the difficulty from X (normal level) to Y (subsection/challenge)
