Edge Special List: The 100 Greatest Video Games

We had an almost identical thread on Gaf following the same criteria and it was a similar list to edges. I like not using nostalgia or "importance" in these lists because they are not relevant to people who can actually use these lists to explore the medium.

To be fair, I wouldn't want to play FFVI or VII today. Chrono Trigger, eh. Even LttP feels dated if it weren't for its immaculate level structure.

LttP's copy-paste boxy dungeons (which our own Viewtiful JC wrote pretty good criticism about a few years ago) have aged a lot worse than the pretty briskly paced Chrono Trigger.

give me $20 dollars so I can order it and read it, and I'll get back to you

i would be interested in doing this too haha

It would be interesting if the people complaining posted their own lists, though.

your list is fab. ;) your number one is in my top 3.

As much as I love GTA V, putting it no.2

Surprisingly good list! I agree with most of the games on the list, and the only thing I would change are the placements. On my list, I would put The Last of Us above Dark Souls and GTA V. All three are excellent games of course, but TLoU tells a much better story and has much better music than the other two.

Many of us critiquing the list have posted some detailed thoughts at least.

I wouldn't mind making a list, but I don't want to spam up the thread unless people really want to take he thread that direction.

Final Fantasy IV, VI, VII, VIII, IX, Tactics are all better than most of those games. They're sequels only in name and some of the lore.

I always find these kinds of lists ridiculous given how utterly different in genre, scope, and intent its occupants can be.

How can you apply a grade and rank Spec Ops, Fez, Mass Effect 2, Call of Duty, Tetris, Persona, GTA etc when they are all so completely different from one another?

Yes, Yes, I know — "Opinions; how do they work?" but you all know what I mean.

I can see the argument in that. A lot of the dungeons in LttP aren't really that complicated. Only a few stand out and even then I think LA did it better.

What am embarrassing list. I don't even know where to begin.

Wind Waker should never, ever even see the light of day in a top 100 list.

Junior, please.
The more I re-read the list and this thread, the more it bugs me. These people are supposed be professionals. It really is a shit list. Like, nonsensical levels of shit.

I'd put it down to Edge being Edge, but then so many people seem to respect them. Just makes you wonder why, I suppose.

Oh yeah a skill tree that would significantly improve Dark Souls.

LEVEL UP!!! SKILL POINT UNLOCKED!!!

WOULD YOU LIKE A SLIGHT DAMAGE BUFF OR A BIT MORE HEALTH!!!

You just gave me a glimpse into a terrible alternate reality. Like when Biff got the almanac.

Sure, it's comparing apples and oranges. Which is why I don't really value the placements in that list. It's the write-ups that make it. A list is utterly meaningless without.

Because their writing is generally great.

You're a big guy.
Some thoughts. Random thoughts, mostly. Individual positions aren't that important, though the general placing (high/mid/low) is.

GTA V is too high. I think it is a staggering product - especially with FP mode - and a natural and logical conclusion of the series' style, but it just isn't that well designed. The best parts of it, the most impressive parts, are non-interactive elements. I really like the game, but it isn't.

Dark Souls #1. OK, not my choice but there is a solid shout for it. But I don't think Bloodborne should also sit there, same with DeS in the top 20. I feel like it is one or the other. I prefer BB but DS is probably better in terms of options and the wider gameplay sandbox.

MGSV is too soon to talk about. Same with Witcher 3. Both will likely rank high, but give it some time. Metal Gear Solid 2 should be on the list. It is a classic game that has aged superbly.

RE4 - nice. Deserved. Also good to see Vanquish in the mix. Great game.

LBP3 shouldn't be in the list. It is awful.

Spelunky should be higher, on a mechanical basis it is up there with tetris for its perfection.

Dota 2 should probably also be higher, but not a big deal. It is a game of vast complexity and skill.

Braid and Warioware were some nice selections to be in there

Arkham Knight? WHAT? Farcry 4? What? Farcry is a really enjoyable game but it will be redundant in a year or so. AK isn't even the second best in its series.

Shocked at the absence of BG2/PST.

Do we really need another 1. Ocarina 2. Super Metroid 3. Link to the Past list though? I would much rather read a list with some unexpected entries, because I actually have to think about that and reevaluate those games.

Pretty good list, but putting Destiny and Splatoon on the list at all, let alone above Symphony of the Night is a mortal sin.

Dark Souls, a most people can't even finish without guides where to go and don't have any story at all if you don't watch youtube videos that explain that weird stuff - Yeah, it must be best game of all time.

I love Dark Souls for the gameplay, but it's no where near the best games of all time

The only Halo on the list is Halo 3 on 35... How about the game that invented Matchmaking and made Online Console Multiplayer big: Halo 2?

This whole list is a bad joke. Destiny on 32, what the hell...

It feels like this list was compiled by several people all working to slightly different criteria.

Their numbered sequels rule was stupid as it favours certain franchises like the Souls Games while limiting the likes of MGS and FF. It meant they could fit in five Mario games but had to drop their previous number 10 Yoshi's Island because it's technically "Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island". There had to have been a better way of handling that problem.

In theory I do like that certain old influential games lose their normally guaranteed place if they're been surpassed by modern successors but in some of these cases I'm not sure "progress" has been such a good thing. At least it shows that something like Earthbound is not only timeless but due to it's unique style it can't really be directly surpassed.

I like the idea that the game needs to stand up today, and that they focused less on historical importance. But it's weird that they state there are no "straight up sequels" as if to get away with including multiple entries from the same series which, in essence, are still pretty much sequels. Multiple Mario, Zelda, and Souls titles.

Anyway, as with all lists, it's shit.

My eyes went straight to MGSV at such a high spot, and rolled back so far that I'm blind now. Thanks, Edge. You dicks.

I got grudge sucked!
Great that FFXII made the list but I'm a little surprised its the only one. No VI or FFT? No Chrono Trigger? All of those games hold up today.

Some of the newer games I'm not sure how well they shine if "today" is 5 years from now.

Okay, as a 'Modern Classics' list it makes a lot more sense. Maybe a little too early to call games like Super Mario Maker a classic already (as awesome as it is), but sure.

I'm guessing Zelda OoT and Earthbound are on there because of the recent 3DS remake/VC release then?

No Chrono Trigger? Are you serious, Edge?

And that top 5 is really modern-heavy. Interesting.

EDIT: Wow, no Gran Turismo? What?

EDIT2: Driveclub being there makes me happy, sorry haters.

Lists without paragraphs explaining why are completely useless.

1. Star Ocean 2
2. Secret of Mana
3. League of Legends

If I just threw this up there as my list, with no context about what those games mean to me, it'd be ridiculed to no end. If I went on to explain how Star Ocean 2 was a world I got lost in during a difficult time in my life, or how Secret of Mana was my first RPG, or how League of Legends is a game that I've made dozens of wonderful friends, people would be more understanding.

Lists are bait. And stupid.

Most people are dumb then, and the second part isn't true at all. Unless you think those youtube videos just made shit up (some of them do some times, not gonna lie).

Do you have any numbers on that 'people can't finish Souls without guides?' Must people can (and do, by the reception of the community in general) finish the game without guides, though.

And yeah, that second part is completely untrue.

EDIT: And Halo 3 is the better game.

Are you kidding me. Your opinion is instantly invalidated.

Games don't have to hold your hand to be incredible. No-one needs a guide to finish Dark Souls.

This shitty list is the same as picking a playlist and putting the songs on shuffle. Careful cutting yourself guys, EDGE trying to be too edgy.

This list is an unmitigated disaster. Even considering the fact that lists are almost always shit, this is especially terrible.

Quite a few glaring omissions there. Looks like the list of a person who largely didn't play games before...2007?

I know Dark Souls is loved by GAF, and it's not a bad game by any stretch, but that entire list is pretty painful. Being at the top of it isn't exactly a gold star.

I guess I'm the only person here who finds it goofy that there is no Silent Hill game on this list. I though the series was well liked but I guess not.
Either way these top 100 lists are always bad and this one seems like the worst.
