Edge Special List: The 100 Greatest Video Games

I think this list sucks for a lot of reasons, but the biggest one is that it is ridiculously biased towards the modern. The post that compared it to the IMDb film list was spot on; if you throw a bunch of people without a real understanding of the full breadth of the medium into a task like this, this is the kind of list you'll get.

For comparison, my top 10:

1. Diablo 2
2. Quake 3
3. Baldur's Gate 2
4. Ocarina of Time
5. Doom
6. Civilization 2
7. Heroes of Might and Magic 3
8. Bayonetta
9. Panel De Pon
10. Pac-Man

The only match I get is OoT. Omitting Doom and Baldur's Gate 2 seems especially dubious.

And your top 10 is heavily biased towards mid-to-late 90's games with a heavy emphasis on PC.

Everyone's Top Games list is going to be heavily biased. A Top Games list is by its very definition, a list of subjective opinions. The best thing to do when you see a Top Games list is to use it to remember good times & look for suggestions of games you may have missed. Using top lists as a way to validate your own good taste in games is a recipe for anger and disappointment.

Always sad that NieR never makes these lists. I would have thought time would have changed people's opinions on this game.

This is the worst list from a major gaming publication I've seen by far.

Even if you want to make the critique it needs to hold up today, it still doesn't make sense.

The issue is sold out at that Future site, is there somewhere else I can order it from?

we could include only a single entry from any series that features straight-up sequels
8 - Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
34 - Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
This list is so bad, they can't even follow their own rules.

(And yes, I know, while MM is technically a gaiden game, it's plainly set very soon after the events of OoT, and the only reason its events happen in the first place is because of a single event in Ocarina's ending. It's the textbook definition of a sequel.)

Oh, and...
each game had to stand up today rather than making the cut for reasons of nostalgia or historic significance
...while I highly admire this line of thinking, why aren't the 3DS versions of both those games listed? Both of them give the games a huge visual makeover, and rework some needlessly frustrating elements (e.g., making the Iron Boots button items so you don't have to go all the way to the Equipment screen to put them on or take them off). They objectively hold up better than their original versions.

You want to make a Top ___ list, fine. Opinions are opinions and all that. But at least adhere to your own guidelines.

I like it. I'd much rather see an interesting top 100 list rather than the standard old school marios/zeldas/FF7/Tetris dominating the top ten.

What a terrible list, I'm impressed with how bad it is.

Also lol at inclusion of R-Type Final which was inferior in every way to R-Type Delta.

Chrono Trigger didn't even make it. Nor did any Final Fantasy except for the MMO style one. They're not real big JRPG fans. Nier had no chance.

Laughable list. I refuse to believe that multiple induviduals combined top 100 would end up looking like that.

FF12 with the unfinished shit story, bad main char, broken limits and summons that handicap you more than playing normally?
The one with no airships no secrets, no mini games and only mob hunts like a boring mmo?
The one with one of the worst level up systems in the series?
The one with the end boss that goes invincible for a set amount of time because they couldn't design a end boss that's actually challenging and original?
Yeah lets pick that one :)

Also dark souls cant be the best simply because the second half isnt really that good especial lost izalith.
This whole list kinda feels strange and wrong but whatever an opinion is an opinion :)

Bish loves my games!
Pandering? Pandering.

I suppose I should ask what the context of the list is? When they were released? Of all time? Today?

My Top 10

1. Ocarina of Time
2. Super Metroid
3. Earthbound
4. Resident Evil 4
5. Final Fatasy 7
6. Panzer Dragoon Saga
7. Ghouls 'n Ghosts
8. Mario Kart 8
9. Metal Gear Solid 3
10. Halo 3

I like to think i'm fairly unbiased, if I were to make a top 100 you'll see games from all over the place in terms of year and platform, however there's no way I could put 100 games in order.

I like a lot of their choices and I'm glad to see a strong indie representation. Braid, Fez, Super Meat Boy, Super Hexagon, Spelunky...these are all 10/10 games for me. Also glad to see stuff like Trials Fusion and Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate on there.

You can't go wrong with any of the games in their list, tbh.

I dunno, there's a stinker or two on there. R-Type Final is a terrible train wreck. Even if this was a begrudging 'stick a shmup in there' pick, it's arguably the worst in the series, and nowhere near the best shmup ever made - you'd be sticking something like DDP or Battle Garegga in there. If you wanted to go with a home released one or specifically an R-Type, you'd go with Delta or the original game.

So apprently it's modern classic but there's SMW and Alttp inside so it's clearly not that modern.
It's 1 entry per franchise but there's something like 3 Souls games, 4 Zelda games (on top of that Alttp and OoT are directly linked as part of the same series and was advertised that way and in that list WW and MM are the 2 direct sequels of OoT).
There's something like 3 3D Mario games that couldn't be more part of the same series if it wasn't called Super Mario 3D 1, 2 and 3.
And there's also the hilarious slant to games that aren't even cold so how will they age? who cares about that buy these games because we tell you to.

47 - LittleBigPlanet 3
And just like that my good opinion of edge just vanished, zero credibility due to one title.
They rate a broken, glitchy and unfinished game, full of bugs and which is far worse than the previous instalments as one of the best ever made?
The rest of the list is just opinion and various games could trade places but little big planet 3? this has to be miss-print and they meant the first game.

You can't go wrong with any of the games in their list, tbh.
most of them are well made good games except for one title and that's little big planet 3.

Wind Waker is so meh.
Metroid Prime below Okami?
Dark Souls is great but the last quarter of the game blows.
Bloodborne is the worst of the souls.

I never care about lists but this one is easily the worst I've seen.

That is a bizarre mismatch of a list. The focus on modern games is really mystifying. A lot of these games are too new to be in a top 100. Something that came out in the last year--I feel like it's kind of impossible to say if it's one of the top games of all time yet because we don't have enough distance from it.

ETA: Mario Maker? @_@ It's been out for less than a month. Really weird list.

I can definitely see Mario Maker being on top of all time lists already because it's classic Mario fun (multiple of which should probably also be on the list) but coupled with infinite possibilities and creativity. The only reason it shouldn't be on a list is because you just know that a Mario Maker 2 will just improve in every aspect. It'll be Super Mario Galaxy 2 all over again (where 2 being better than 1 doesn't mean 1 is bad, it just means 2 is even more fantastic).

That said, I'm not sure some games on that list belong, especially when talking about an All Time list. Especially when it has Final Fantasy XII (which is great) and not something like FFVI (which is incredible and still holds up).

Their "No Sequels" rule kinda makes this list pointless. It's silly to only allow one Metal Gear but include Demon's Souls, Dark Souls and Bloodborne which are functionally far more similar than say, MGS3 and MGSV. This list is pretty dodgy by EDGE standards.

Well said. To me it's not a validation of my own tastes, I just like reading their essays.

Why do people get mad over some list from some magazine that barely affects them?It doesnt make any sense...Do you have some repressed feeling or something?

I'm not one to complain about lists like this one because I'm aware it's a matter of personal taste in games, but it's hard to believe that Rez and OutRun 2006 are the best games Sega has created. Besides, if they decided to focus on modern classics, why is it that they included Super Metroid and Super Mario World?

Knowing the way Edge works, it's like they decided to craft a list that could potentially generate some kind of backlash on purpose. Oh, well. Their opinion anyway, but this list doesn't get any respect from me.
