Playstation 4 firmware Ver.3.0 is currently beta tested

Firmware team has to be moved to a western dev. It paid off that Sony contracted an American to help make the PS4 and western devs for their feedback in general but they need to also get a western branch to do the FW.

The Japanese team, im sure are doing their best, but seems like there is a disconnect to what the fans want and what they or Sony pushes to get out. Feels like there is some clash in guidance. We need people who know what they are doing and reading feedback from fans to get the features we want/need.

Sony is seriously dropping the ball on this one.

Make sure when playing a movie (playing) press options and make sure it's set there as well to Dolby.

If you don't it supersedes everything else.

Bitstream: direct,mix or something

I don't use my PS4 (or any of my consoles) to play movies, so is there a way to do this with just games? Or would setting it for just one movie save the setting for all other content including games?

R1/L1 shifts "pages" to load the things you see on top (like notifications and friends list)

Personally, I'd like this if they removed some of the tiles (too many redundant tiles that could be put elsewhere), and allowed us to pin games/other things instead.

Everything most important to you would be right at your fingertips.
I don't really get this layout. It's fine for when you only have to show one item, ie., the game in the drive, but what happens when you select Library or Tv/Video?

Sony will not and can not allow access to much of the code running in the Southbridge ARM SoC (except as APIs) to anyone but trusted Sony employees in Japan. Microsoft will be equally circumspect with code running on the ARM block in the XB1. This is because the routines running in the ARM blocks are also used with/for DRM.

ooVoo is waiting on DRM and APIs (including facial/emotional recognition) as one of the features of ooVoo is to allow video chat while both sides watch a commercial video from for instance, Netflix. Netflix is a APP that is 1.1 GB in size waiting on Southbridge APIs after which it will drop in size to, depending on how Sony supports WebMAF APPs, to a few 100 K bytes to 30 MB. A new version of the DLNA player with DRM will be integrated into Southbridge and controllable with a phone or tablet. Miracast is waiting on DRM...Vidipath is waiting on DRM...the Browser is waiting on DRM

The PS3 Playready port announced 9 months ago is necessary for it to get a browser update, Miracast, DLNA update, WEBMAF APP updates etc. I've predicted the PS3 will have a major firmware update when this happens. It might also get a ooVoo video chat app.

When I posted the thread announcing Sony Playstation Playready porting, DRMToday listed the PS4 as supporting Marlin and Playready with the PS3 only supporting Marlin. I just checked and it's now listed as PS3/4 with both Marlin and Playready support.

This does not give us where they are at in the process but they wouldn't have hired people in the UK for the Thin C++ layer and APP/browser layer if the embedded routines were not done.

The following job posting starts 11/8/2015 and I'd guess is after the few in-house apps and DRM are released for the PS4 and PS3 I'm guessing for the Paris show October 27 2015.

Please fix your Rest mode, the DS4 won't connect 50% of times. It's frustrating.
Rebuild database? A user should not use this function daily in order to make thing functional, it's a shame.

That sounds like a problem with your controller, the cable, or the port. I charge my DS4 in rest mode every other day and it connects fine 100% of the time. Also, if you're needing to rebuild your database every then something is wrong. I do it maybe once a month.

Weren't these posts created sometime last year? Sure they were based in London. Also idea on the timescale? It seems that this implementation is taking longer than expected with ooVoo aiming for a Q2 release which has now come and gone.

EDIT

Just seen the update on your post. These are newer posts. I'm sure I remember them looking for potential employees for DRM implementation last year also. Think this was back when it first became apparent they were looking to introduce a 'well known DRM service', which turned out to be playready.

you can already delete games with 0 trophies now.....

You do realize that deleting 0% trophies is relatively inconsequential in comparison to everything else right? Can you imagine the complaints and customer service calls sony would get if you could delete purchases from your library? That's a terrible idea. A hide option or some level of organization is the answer. Not deletion. And the trophy thing is just silly ocd/trophy competition site nonsense. Just a silly request from trophy whores

That's in the blue link I edited in. 9 months from the Playready job posting till today. The PS4 was further along at that point with DRMtoday stating the PS4 had Playready already embedded with the PS3 only supporting Marlin. DRM today says both the PS4 and PS3 now support Playready.

For ooVoo I can only guess that Playready 3 and Playready ND are the holdup as I think they aren't even in Windows 10 yet and they are necessary for 1080P and 4K streaming from the cloud and over the home network. Microsoft has announced XB1 Antenna TV tuner support and DVR with streaming only to Microsoft platforms. When DRM certified platforms for Vidipath are released the XB1 should stream to those also...similar plans from Sony. When, late this year or early next year.

The FCC DSTAC is going to recommend a Downloadable Security Scheme to replace the cable card and that can be implemented in 2016 with the XB1, PS4, PCs, PS3 able to use a USB or network tuner and connect to cable. The videos of the DSTAC committee mention in home streaming and DTCP+ allowing streaming from a home DVR/media hub to outside the home. Software and standards for that are being worked on and ooVoo might need DTCP+ for it's feature where the connected video chat can also share a Netflix stream or waiting on YouTube and Netflix to implement sharing movies server side or a combination where the Netflix playready server confirms both ends of the chat have authorization to play the movie...this seems the most likely scheme.

Obviously I'm not a UI designer but I'd prefer something like that.

Options scroll vertically and sub options scroll horizontally.

Apps and games have their own separate tab, you can press options button to get further info on a game or an app, an area where it shows you DLC etc..

The game library should have filtering options for just installed games, just games you have but not installed or a mix of both.

isn't this basically the X360 UI?

When I scroll in the OS to the right, it sometimes hitches. When I am searching in the store or navigating, it sometimes hitches. Hitching is not a responsive characteristic.

Unplug from your network, smooth as butter. Too much data flying all over the place, that's expected.

I have never had this problem. my ui is smooth as butter, and i have over 25 games installed on it, on my 2tb hard drive.

Jeff: does the DRM in the new DLNA app mean they will start doing that thing where the playback of your files stops if they detect watermarks?

The PS3 did that and it drove me crazy.

If I'm turning the system on, the UI hitches if there are updates ready to download upon logging in. Bugs the hell out of me. Don't have much hitching beyond that.

Watermarking is for forensic tracking and shouldn't cause any problems in playing. Mainly it puts in the video somewhere not noticeable IDs like Mac number and IP address so that the FBI can find you.

A watermark has to be introduced in all 4K delivery, at the worst case at the server streaming the content (so that each stream is unique), or better still at the device. The latter will mean that the guilty party customer can be identified from the source of any copy found on the internet.

Cinavia works to prevent copying via the detection of a watermark recorded into the analog audio of media such as theatrical films and Blu-ray Discs. If a player other than blu-ray detects Cinavia in the audio it will state: "Audio outputs temporarily muted. Do not adjust the playback volume. The content being played is protected by Cinavia™and is not authorized for playback on this device." Or "Playback stopped. The content being played is protected by Cinavia™ and is not authorized for playback on this device."

I like the actual UI, but if I have to choose, I would take the PS3 version of XMB instead the PS4 version.

The PS4 edition has too much information in the screen while the PS3 version looks really minimalistic, faster and more intuitive and clear

In the PS4 intellectual notice is Playready and WMDRM. WMDRM is for DTCP-IP in home streaming. Bonjour is also in the PS4 open source listing for discovering devices on the in-home network. The choice to use/include Bonjour rather than to just use UPnP points to more than DLNA server discovery.

Bonjour provides a general method to discover services on a local area network. The software is widely used throughout OS X, and allows users to set up a network without any configuration. As of 2010 it is used to find printers and file-sharing servers. Examples of applications using Bonjour:

iTunes to find shared music
iPhoto to find shared photos
iChat, Adobe Systems Creative Suite 3, Proteus, Adium, Fire, Pidgin, Skype, Vine Server, and Elgato EyeTV to share local recordings with multiple clients
Gizmo5 to find other users on the local network
TiVo Desktop to find digital video recorders and shared-media libraries
SubEthaEdit and e to find document collaborators
Contactizer to find and share contacts, tasks, and events information
Things & OmniFocus to synchronize projects and tasks across the Mac desktop and the iPad, iPhone or iPod touch
Safari to find local web servers and configuration pages for local devices
Asterisk to advertise telephone services along with configuration parameters to VoIP phones and dialers.
Software such as Bonjour Browser or iStumbler, both for Mac OS X, or Zeroconf Neighborhood Explorer for Windows, can be used to view all services declared by these applications. Apple's "Remote" application for iPhone and iPod Touch also uses Bonjour to establish connection to iTunes libraries via Wi-Fi.[3]

Bonjour and WMDRM point to Connected Home sharing of media and resources beyond what I envisioned for Vidipath. WMDRM isn't being used yet. The coming calendar can be used with "find and share contacts, tasks, and events information" on a PC or phone for syncing with other platform apps. Several of the above could be used with ooVoo and a coming DVR and Vidipath would use some of the other example features.

I think we can expect many new features later this year...

It's rare, but they can. Off the top of my head, DLNA wasn't even a firmware update, it was just an app (that should've been there when the system launched but hey). And there was 3D bluray as a mid-gap firmware update.

I'm really hoping PS1/PS2 BC is a TGS announcement, that's where it would make most sense to me (would've made more sense two years ago... sigh). But that's about when the firmware update would be too, so it should've leaked with 3.0 unless support is hidden in the firmware, but needs a wrapper app to be downloaded to actually use it (which I also kinda expect).
With a FCC ruling for a Downloadable Security Scheme to replace the cable card and ATSC 2.0 in 2016 as well as 4K blu-ray and digital bridge, more PS4s and XB1's will be sold to casual gamers... So PS1-PS2 BC makes sense for 2016. PS4 3.0 having more content protection for children also points to more casual games.

Sub-account for the children can now be created from the [new users] of the user selection screen.
Harmful use set of services to block the display of the Web site (parental control)

Rock Band 4 could be even more fun with remote game sharing and ooVoo. It's a casual game and it's being released October 6th and a major feature update is coming December 8th. (The Sony Paris Game Show is October 27th.) So I'd guess something like ooVoo could be announced at the Paris Game Show and Games taking advantage of ooVoo as the Playstation game video/audio and text chat integrated with games.

VP9 encoding and the announced Youtube streaming make sense and enhanced Live from Playstation and (Twitch) video uploading using new codecs does also.

It is now possible to broadcast using You Tube ™.
It was able to upload a video clip to Twitter. (10 seconds maximum)

The blu-ray/DVD player was touched and accessibility is a OS system wide feature including the browser.

In the Blu-ray Disc ™ / DVD player, it now supports accessibility features. We have expanded the scope of other accessibility features.

All in all I expect we are seeing the results of many Southbridge routines being added to the PS4 OS.

Jeff, when you say enhanced Twitch video, are you talking about the Upstream or the Downstream quality (or both)?

I don't know this for sure but a next logical step in OS support via the Southbridge are codecs and with the Sony thrust in supporting games over media, ooVoo too. Twitch and Netflix for instance have to plan support based on what hardware and firmware updates can support on the platforms they service. 4K blu-ray uses HEVC and one (Samsung) 4K blu-ray player has already been announced with many more in October if 4K blu-ray title releases in October mean anything. Edit: Turns out Twitch is still flash and new codecs will wait for middle of next year. Youtube is HTML5 <video> and does support h.264 and VP9, question is Sony supporting VP9?

http://www.pcworld.com/article/2986803/software-games/twitch-fires-back-at-youtube-with-video-playlists-html5-playback-ps4-app.html said:
Last but not least, Twitch also announced an app for PlayStation, which joins existing apps for Xbox, Nvidia Shield, iOS, Android, Chromecast, and Fire TV. The new PlayStation app will arrive on the PS3, PS4, and Vita sometime this fall.

Last month, YouTube launched YouTube Gaming, a new livestreaming platform that goes head-to-head against Twitch, the biggest name in e-sports streaming. Twitch isn&#8217;t taking its newfound competition lying down, though: At this year&#8217;s TwitchCon, the company announced a whole host of improvements to its livestream viewing experience&#8212;and a new app for PlayStation users.

During Friday&#8217;s TwitchCon keynote, Twitch CEO Emmett Shear announced that Twitch&#8217;s player would go full HTML 5 by the middle of 2016, replacing the old Flash-based player entirely. Twitch dipped its toe in HTML5 video playback in July when it switched to HTML5 playback controls overlaid atop Flash-based video, but come next year, everything on Twitch should stream Flash-free.

YouTube&#8217;s hoping to reverse its livestream woes today with the official launch of YouTube Gaming, its video games-focused sub-brand. Both the site and app will go live later today with YouTube boasting &#8220;over 25,000 game pages and even more gaming channels.&#8221;

In other words, it&#8217;s a more focused way to access the gaming content you already watch on YouTube-At-Large. Any gaming videos uploaded to YouTube will be automatically ingested to YouTube Gaming and sorted by game, as well as by content creator.

YouTube&#8217;s revamped livestreams to be more plug-and-play (a la Twitch) while also supporting 60 frames per second streaming, HTML5 playback, and DVR functionality (a.k.a. start watching a stream late and still be able to play from the beginning).

I just hate how user unfriendly PS4 OS is to people who don't play games. PS3 at least was consistent. The pictures, videos, and music locations never moved. On PS4 all that crap gets shifted around based on when you last used it. Then there's no remote. My parents can use PS3 no problem. PS4 nope. People say it's simpler but it's not simpler in user experience, it just does less.

Meanwhile my wife and kids can navigate with ease and use our TV remote on the PS4....even my three year old knows how to navigate to Netflix, NowTV or Sky.
