Super Mario Maker |OT| Miyamoto Simulator 2015

Here are my latest levels. I'll play some GAF levels in a bit after my gamepad charges.

Crystal Countdown Cavern
2BC8-0000-0080-CCA6

An underground level that somewhat revolves around the P-Switch. Includes a secret room and 3 hidden 1-Ups to find!

I thought this was a really well designed level. A little tricky in places but generally quite easy. The layout is very good and a lot of thought looks to have gone into the placement of platforms and enemies. Good Job. Starred, Commented and would recommend to other GAFfers!

OK, here's a batch before I give Freedom Planet a shot. Hey guys, how about we try putting up feedback and playthroughs if we're going to post a bunch of levels, eh? We're trying to all get better at making stages here.

I liked this but the first portion before the first pipe is way, waaaay too tight. You're confronted with the first puzzle before you have time to even look at the stage, and the blue spikes just swarm the trampoline. Ironically after that the stage becomes a lot harder but feels more manageable because there's more room to breathe. What's here after the start really works. I like it!
Thanks for the feedback! I'm still learning about difficulty balance so this is really helpful! Glad you liked it!

hey thanks! i'm glad you liked it! i was watching Naar play it on his twitch stream right now and he seemed to like it too. i wanted to reward patience when designing the level. i also hid three 1-ups to find, one requires some backtracking and a keen eye :)

I meant to play this stage much earlier and now I'm upset that I haven't. Really brilliant! Great balance and some very clever ideas. I like how the second half is an autoscroller not to push you, but to keep you close to the lakitus. I wish that part had it easier to see above the thwomps to maybe hide a secret, and I really wish the last part was longer so people couldn't just zip past the lakitus with the giant podobos. Really good stage, and one of the better Reznor-style bits I've seen in SMM to boot!.

Thanks for the feedback! Funny enough in an earlier version of the level before I published it, the last section after Not-Reznor was a little bit longer. But after the autoscroller part and a mini boss I kind of felt it made the level too long and a little mean after already going through the gauntlet of stuff the player just went through. If anything I wish there was a way to make Lakitus throw things sooner/faster for that last segment.

I'm thinking that if I have time tonight I might do a GAF stream

I usually only stream Smash Tournaments, but since people appreciate feedback I´ll be playing the levels everyone is posting, starting by this page and playing my way back, I am not that great a player, but I like to finish the levels at any cost.

I´ll start with Kuribo´s Hideaway, here is the link for the stream.

Thanks for playing, and especially for the star. Of course the stream just had to start choking on my end right as you started my stage, but hey, I'll go over the VOD again afterwards; I caught most of your run. You're the second player I've seen dash past the ending quickly enough that you didn't trigger the Chain Chomp pursuit, something I picked up in testing but thought was okay to leave in. I might go back and revise if it's a common problem. (This is the stage, for those following the thread: 8805-0000-0067-E3B4.)

Kind of strange to see a Buzzy-on-Boo stage pop up right before me (this guy, KenOD: 892A-0000-0068-2096). I'd been working on the exact same concept, but his was a lot more intricate than what I was putting together. Back to the drawing board, I guess.

Made a new level, It's called World 2: Fly! Tanuki Mario

You've gotta collect the 100 coins to "complete" the level.

I've made a pretty basic level that I like how it turned out. Inspired from the beginning area of one of my favourite games:

Just finished this new stage that I'm pretty proud of. Took a while due to the limitations of Mario Maker, but I think it's solid!

Shuttle Train
faopIsH.jpg
uy0rSWv.jpg

Grab that fire flower, don your space helmet, and snatch that extra life–you're gonna need it–cause you're heading to space! Mario's been given word that there's an intergalactic space train passing over the Mushroom Kingdom region; and it's up to you to take off into the galaxy and check it out! Be careful, in space, no one can hear you scream. Enemies ride on constellations and the stowaways remind you that this is their home!

Be quick, but be cautious!

Stage ID: 36ED-0000-0082-2B90

Feedback would be appreciated! I've been leaving comments on Miiverse, so I hope you've been catching them :)

How would you guys feel about a level that "fools" you, but it doesn't actually result in your death?

Ex. you are crossing over this bottomless pit on a bridge made out of brick blocks, and just as you are able to see the goal on the other side BAM it turns into coins and you fall....................................... except it wasn't a bottomless pit. Instead, it's actually where you're supposed to go in the first place (you'll be able to reach the goal later).

Thoughts? Could it get annoying quick?

I think this sounds cool. As long as it's intentional, leads to unique gameplay, and doesn't cause cheap, trial-and-error deaths, it could be a fun mechanic. Obviously, like any gameplay mechanic, it needs to be used in a considered and thoughtful manner, too much and it might get annoying.

It's fine. Having a "whew" moment or two is fine, and it's a bit of playfulness between the player and designer.

Surprises are fine. Actually I did a similar thing in my latest level. You walk out the back door of Mario's house and AHHH PITFALL INTO A CAVE. But it's not dangerous, just a fun thing.

I'll go ahead and post it, it's called Curse of the Were-Mole! and its ID is 3898-0000-0080-60CF. Kind of in honor of Halloween coming up, kind of because I unlocked a certain amiibo costume and just had to do it. It's very easy like most of my levels, just a goofy concept thing.

Make sure you play test that part a lot with potential power up the player might have. Also anticipate some players might run and jump, walk slowly and do whatever in order to "survive" the fall. Could be a fun idea if you are able to make that fool proof and let the players have a little scare at no real danger.

Thanks for the responses! I forgot to mention in my post that the level would consist entirely of similar "twists" ("falling into a pit" would occur only once, of course), but you guys addressed this in your responses, so it worked out anyway. Thanks again!

I have no idea, my internet is awful so I don´t check the channel while I am streaming. Also I stop the stream between level I try so twitch saves them and I can give my quick review. Expect lag for the first few videos, I´ll work on it so it lags far less, sorry for that.

So here goes the first batch:

Got a new level for you guys:

QBduQAGl.jpg

Kuribo's Hideaway - F73D-0000-007D-BABC

I really tried to make this one feel as much like an authentic Mario 3 fortress as I could.

Of course, it wouldn't be a real Mario 3 stage without a few fun secrets...

Fun and challenging. I really like the sense of spacing. Good job.
Here is the video (Really REALLY laggy, sorry for that) http://www.twitch.tv/salvapot/v/18676992

Under The Starry Sky
4694-0000-004D-7DD7

Sky High Cargo Chase
CB2D-0000-006C-86F8

Would love feedback on either of these levels
Video: http://www.twitch.tv/salvapot/v/18677583
Very focused level, I like the way the level gives you exactly what you need for each part, yet makes you work for it. Felt like a real level until the end with all the flying stars, that bit was fun, so I am not complaining.

Second level: http://www.twitch.tv/salvapot/v/18677989
Another fun level, very smart placing of enemies and canon balls. Really like how the secret was not spelled out for you and took me until the second try to figure it out.

Alright! It took me the whole evening but I finally finished my latest level:

There's platforming, three 1UPs and a boss fight. Nothing unfair. Just some good old-fashioned fun.

Please give it a try and let me know what you think. I'll be playing more GAF levels tomorrow after work!
Video: http://www.twitch.tv/salvapot/v/18678500
Another fun level, I like how you give a bob-omb tutorial on the first part, the second part provided some nice challenge but the whole flying around the rock in the second moving platform becomes pointless once you realize you can just run and jump, but its nice to collect coins. The boss battle with bowser was fun, but a bit frustrating since bowser can lock you out as seen in the video, the constant leafs falling fixes this, but it feels like the battle should be shorter and more focused. Maybe it was my mistake by running back so much? Other than that, its really good!

Ok, I´ll be playing the others. Again I want to apologize for the lag on the stream, I am fixing this issues as they come. Also if you see I am offline its because I am typing in the next game code and no one wants to see my face while I do that, also so I can get twitch to make individual videos.

I´ll be playing this 4 right now (here) :

I just played Bom-omb Bridge. It's a really fun level and I liked the idea of the Bom-ombs flying as you jump across and the multiple routes. The only thing I didn't like was jumping on the giant Bom-ombs because if you do not wait for the screen to scroll first you will die cheaply , as the next Bom-omb hasn't arrived yet. Other than that great job.

I had to see how this compared to my stage Bounce on Big Bob-omb, and it manages to be an entirely different flying bob-omb stage, finale aside. The first chomp path requires you to make a huge blind jump -- definitely a no no. Put some coins down to help guide Mario to safety. That aside it's lots of fun. The music really sells it!

Thank you guys for the feedback!

My latest level for your perusal. Not my finest hour I don't think but I kind of ran out of inspiration. Cluttered graphics? Check. Auto-scroll? Check. Rather annoying and lame attempt at using sound effects? Check. Red High-heeled shoe? Check.

Difficulty 2.5/5?
(Last stage of world two of a full campaign I am working on)

A fairly short but interesting airship scrolling level.

The Magikoopa trio isn't meant to be fought, it is there just to apply a slight bit of pressure and to lead in to later appearances by them.

Thanks to everyone that left stars or comments on Miiverse. Honestly, I prefer Miiverse or MarioMakerHub comments, as either of those sites are drastically, wildly better formats for giving feedback on a level-by-level basis. It is clearly my best received level so far.

Based on playing around more, I revised an existing level:
1-2: Giant Koopa Cannon Cavern
DED0-0000-0082-4CBB

Hopefully it is pretty fun. Some parts near the end can be a bit hectic, but it is not a long level.

The theme is that an invading force keeps trying new strategies in each world. Once that fails, they try advancing or evolving their strategies.

World 1: Giants & Weapons
World 2: Flying enemies.
World 3: Track-based Weapons
World 4: ???

I haven't been playing much, but I spent some time on a new stage. Not too intricate, but I was playing around with some ideas that I've seen in other stages and enjoyed.

I made a page with my stages now as well, here.

Not my stage, but it's so good that I had to share. It's a puzzle stage that not only requires a lot of thinking on how to beat it, but also a good knowledge of Super Mario World's gameplay systems and some player skill too. Really well done, my favorite level so far.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Ok, it's time to talk about the latest level I've been working on, while giving feedbacks here and there too. I'm already at 13 levels uploaded (and I thank you all for the feedbacks / exposition / stars you gave to them so far), but creating a random level is not the same as creating an entire Super Mario Bros. game from scratch, from 1-1 to the final encounter with Bowser, while having to face both the beauty and the difficulty of trying to do such a thing as coherently as you'd want. And the current competition about 1-1 levels here stimulated me even more. Thus, I've decided to start a new series of levels...

Title - New Super Mario Bros. M
Style - New Super Mario Bros. U (of course!)
Kind of levels - As Mario-ish as possible, with some different flavours where they can fit. There could be variety in the themes as well.

All my levels in this series will be highlighted as such. Once in a while, I'll upload levels on their own, not related to this series, but for the next weeks, I'd try to give my best to create the first worlds of NSMBM.
In place of the Star Coins from the NSMB series, here I've used what's usually used in MM to "simulate" them: 1 Ups. In my case, I'll put 5 1 Ups in each level to find out. 4 of them are easier to get, but one requires the player more skill and attention to the level itself, it won't be always be a matter of jumping higher. Finding the 4 1 Ups (or 5 if you really want to) is not the only challenge in the levels I'll make; there are several of them...I can't promise 100% anything right now on the matter, but my intention is to make levels featuring from 1 to 2 additional challenges, in order to give them more replayability. I'll put the challenges in the descriptions here and on MarioMakerHub.com (and, hopefully, on Miiverse as well).

Well, enough talking. Here's the first level for the NSMBM series.

Name - 1-1:Flora garden's plain
ID: D9EC-0000-0082-50A0
Brief description: A new Mario adventure begins! Flowers surely embellish the view quite well, but never forget to be careful, especially for possible secrets hiding even where you wouldn't expect them.
Main challenge (for all NSMBM levels) - Find the 4 1 Ups + the hidden 1 Up
Sub-challenge 1 - Beat the level in less than 25 seconds
Sub-challenge 2 - Beat the level in less than 20 seconds

I'm quite excited to hear your feedback in the next future :)

Here's an attempt to get round the problem of Mario level design as I see it; play testing the levels by myself doesn't work because I know what's coming.

My latest attempt levels the playing field by giving players a bit of a preview of what's to come.

Sftq6P3.jpg

B319-0000-0082-13C0

It's still not meant to be particularly hard, but it will be interesting to see if people are still dying so often with this approach.

Give it a go and give it some feedback. :)
Here is the video (I started to stream late, sorry) http://www.twitch.tv/salvapot/v/18682712
I liked the preview window, but I feel it takes all the tension away from the level. Part of the fun is figuring out what you are up against. What you did is a fun way for players to know what they are up against, but I feel that once you know what you have to do is really easy. A easy way to fix this would be to not give a mushroom or any power up to the player, since the challenge then would be to pass the obstacles that you have already seen. With the mushroom the player knows now they all have to do is run and they´ll make it. The preview should be there to present a challenge. Its a fun idea =).

It was fun for what it wanted to do, I tried my hand at collecting the 100 coins, missed two. Great tutorial for the tanooki leaf.

I've made a pretty basic level that I like how it turned out. Inspired from the beginning area of one of my favourite games:

Escape The Undead Asylum
648E-0000-0082-0EB0

This level was harder to me than it should be, but I have always had trouble with Hammer Bros. I was really confused at that area, I didn´t realize I had to find a hidden block and always died at that area. I´ll recommend you to maybe make a solid wall next to the hidden block, that way players don´t have to make a leap of faith and will realize they have to find the solution in that confined area. I liked how you setup the enemies to always give the player pause, nice job! But yeah, remember leap of faiths are a bit frustrating.

I finally made a new and easier version of my only level so far, Spiky Rollercastle:

v.1.1 (easier)
(96A8-0000-0082-8392)

The Update includes various improvements, though mostly a reduce in hazards which didn't have much to do with the main challenge of the level (
surfing the shell
), also more power-ups. Completion rate before was at 2,5%, lets see what you guys can do now :p (harder version still online for those who wanna try).

Will try to play some of your guys levels the next days, seen some awesome looking stuff but didn't have the time.

edit: redid a small part of the beginning again. Should be good to go now though =) also don't forget to check out the secret hard path :D

Are you talking about regular blocks? Most people cut holes in the walls and fill them with semisolid platforms, often it looks fine.
Enemies/obstacles/moving parts. I'm not even spamming them to create some ridiculous chaos or anything. The limit seems to be 100 but that includes stuff like grinders, rocket engine things, and even blocks/platforms if they have wings attached.

Hideaway is a weird name for a castle -- is it a vacation spot? -- and there's no Kuribos, or Goombas, in the level that I saw, except one in the block in a secret part. The name aside, I think you give the mushroom and leaf way too close together -- why not just the leaf? The main stage itself is also super short. You might have done well to put some of the hidden stuff on the main path. But the original SMB3 levels were short, and you set out to make this feel like the original game, and in terms of layout, difficulty and feel, you did it. Not a bad stage at all, just an imperfect one.

It's Kuribo's Hideaway, not Kuribos' Hideaway: a hideaway belonging to many kuribos. Of course there's only one. :D I think you might be right about the power-ups though. They are a little close.

Fun and challenging. I really like the sense of spacing. Good job.

Thanks! Glad you liked it.

Hey GAF, just wanted to share my brand new level.

Diddy's Banana Coin Plantation: 44DB-0000-0082-7881
Diddy loves bananas so gather as much banana coins as you can.

I know this theme has been done a million times over, but I still wanted to do my own DK-like level. The level may seem long, but it really isn't. In fact, I think it's rather easy. So enjoy!

One thing I wish I was able to make clear, was the shell helmet. You can equip it by crouching if you're holding it in your hand. I saw you throw it and jump up to equip it–not bad!–but you could have just pressed down, lol.

Other than that, you progressed nicely. You have excellent Mario skills!

One thing I wish I was able to make clear, was the shell helmet. You can equip it by pressing crouching if you're holding it in your hand. I saw you throw it and jump up to equip it–not bad!–but you could have just pressed down, lol.

Other than that, you progressed nicely. You have excellent Mario skills!

So that is how it works!

I am playing Mole Station right now and its hard, I don´t get how I am able to reach that green mushroom on the left, I just stopped trying now. I´ll beat it!

Edit: Oh, I see, I am supposed to wall jump.

I apologize if this has been covered (massive thread) but:

Has playing this and making levels, more than anything, deepened your affection for the originals? I'm enjoying MM immensely so don't get me wrong, but in a way the more I mess with it, the more I just want to shut it off and enjoy Mario 1 and 3 especially.
