Super Mario Maker |OT| Miyamoto Simulator 2015

i would have counted it since the deadline is not super strict and i wanna encourage people who take the time to check out the submissions but i had already made the post announcing the top three

it would have made a difference, too :p

What do you guys think?

Clearly a lot of effort went into this level. It looks good, if a little busy in places. It's fun to play too for the most part. A couple of parts where I thought enemies were squeezed into places with low ceilings. It suffers, as do many intricately designed lengthy courses, from a lack of checkpoints - it's a long level and there don't appear to be too many power-ups (I found one on my run through the level). I didn't finish it but I'm guessing I got most of the way through. Will give it another bash sometime soon. In the meantime I've starred it and followed you.

Thank you sir! Im the first one to admit I have a hard time editing myself :/
There are actually quite a few power ups, albeit hidden.
Will try to be more concise next time! Thank you!

It was fun and my critique was just that. I like the openness of the stage and the fact that the player has to kind of figure out what to do, so I don't know exactly how you will be able to give visual hints on where to go and maintain the non linear feel. arrows will help in certain situations, but I do think the stage should be left for the player to figure out as well. It's a tough balance. I really do like the idea for the stage. It's really cool.

Thanks again.

I really just don't want anyone to die, but don't think that area would work without pits. (As there's no reason to attempt to jump then and there then)

I have changed the location of the two hidden item boxes, so they are right above the pipe so hopefully hard to miss. I agree and didn't want to put any arrow anywhere.

I'm glad you liked the level.

Here's the updated version.
It's my 9th course and I'm at 48 stars, hopefully I'll cross 50 today! (This is not me asking for pity stars, just expressing happiness.)

edit: I was planning on looking up your levels now, but as I erased and reuploaded, your name is no longer there! If you try again I'll be sure to check out your levels.

yea sorry :( people were cheesing 2 (before i fixed it) and thought i would be cruel a bit :p

also they are not very hard. only one that is hard is The Mario Trials 4

It's actually not that hard, the hard part is pixel perfect finishes with a blind triple jump.

Finished all 4 of them :p. Only the first two get stars, because the ending of 3 and 4 are a bit cruel.

How on earth does it troll newbies? It slowly ramps up difficulty. The first enemy is after a step that teaches players they have to jump. Monty moles take a long time to pop out and warn the player with dust and sound. They also teach players that monty moles will pop out when there is dirt, since most of the level is made of grass semisolid platforms. This gives players additional warning. On top of that I provided ample platforms to stay above the enemies altogether and ample powerups (mushrooms, fire flower, yoshi, a propeller mushroom). Then it introduces monty moles that can jump, adding a bit more challenge. Then it features a couple of long jumps over pits full of safety platforms. It ends with a fakeout ending to amuse veterans that seems challenging but all players have to do is stand in front of a wall. It has a very high completion rate. It's no more trolling than the official 1-1s.

I didn't mean any offense, but I'll try to go into detail on the things that brought me to that mindset so at least my criticism will be more constructive.

-The first enemy you're forced to encounter (not counting the harmless wiggler on the house) is a goomba that appears trapped, but as you approach it, a monty mole pops up from under it and charges at you and requires two hits to kill. It's a bait-and-switch that doesn't seem newbie friendly to me.

-The second monty mole pops up just in time to intercept you when you're going for the mushroom.

-Next a line of coins draws you straight into a group of 3 monty moles, which is more of an obstacle than it seems to veteran players.

-Just above that a brick is visible. Jumping up to the brick will break it if you're still big, leaving you to wonder what was in the question block you couldn't see before and can't reach now.

-Next you're suddenly hit with not one, but three winged monty moles at once. I consider winged monty moles to be a bit too unpredictable for beginners, and if you avoid them they can manage to follow you up to the platform where Yoshi is.

-Giant winged monty mole. See above about winged monty moles.

-The giant monty mole on top of the stairs would almost certainly hit a new player.

-The area after the false flagpole with the Rocky Wrench, giant flying bob-ombs, bullet bills, and moles just seems entirely too much for a newbie to encounter at the end of a 1-1. And if you don't know what you're doing you could easily end up dead there. The cannon that breaks the wall for you won't fire while you're standing on it, so you have to get in the path of the bombs or use Yoshi to flutter-jump to the roof.

Feedback time!

I made this simple level as the beginning of a series: "Return to Dinosaur Land". It´s a simple 1-1 revolving loosely around the spiked helmet. For this level I tried to follow the classic approach of 3 heights, where the lower path is easy and safe, the medium is more challenging and the higher one is more dangerous but hides the best rewards.
Please, play and comment!

Good 1-1 level. The numbers of enemies fits the "story". No bottomless pits, new item properly introduced. Starred.

So, I've uploaded another level (with a Halloween theme!):

I uploaded the third chapter of "y cant metroid shoot?" today, about Norfair/Ridley, and since Tourian has already been published, this means the whole series is complete.

Super%2BMario%2BMaker%2BStage%2B%2528niveau%2Bou%2Blevel%2529%2BMetroid%2BResurgence%2B-%2BRidley.png

"y cant metroid shoot? - Ridley" (CA16-0000-0103-88A3) is again different from the other levels in the series while still belonging to the same world. Norfair and Ridley's hideout in NES Metroid are riddled with secret passages, so this level follows the same route, and is more interconnected than the others. I also took inspiration from Return of Samus, my favourite 2D Metroid game, for the design of the "underground" areas, more natural and "organic" than in the previous two chapters. The level has actually more powerups than Brinstar, but its pacing is much faster and action-focused, like Kraid, but with more secrets and puzzles. The time limit is a threat, but you can spare a lot of time by ignoring optional secrets and/or an optional powerup.

You can check my other levels, including the other Metroid chapters in:

And with that, we come to the final group of the preliminary voting! As you can see, I also added a deadline for the final voting. Figured a week should give everyone the chance to check out the cream of the crop.

Hey, what happened to my submission? :(
Any reason I wasn't added? I was within the deadline. Kind of disappointed...

someone was bound to slip through the cracks with so many participants, that's why i asked people to check if their level came up after the group 4 was up. i remember your submission, too, so it probably just got lost in the tab shuffle

added you to the group and i'll pm dad so that he adds your level to the aggregator account. :)

Thank you! :)

Right, new level time:

The Hammer Bros' hideaway
408B-0000-0096-7725

Hammer Bros have retreated to their port hideaway after a heist, but left some loot behind. Navigate their trail and prepare for the ultimate showdown!

Tried really hard to not make this too difficult. Added a block there, took away an enemy here etc. Aiming for a 10% completion record but who knows. Enjoy...

I wanted to try my hand at making a one screen stage. I think it's pretty challenging; it requires some patience and a steady hand...but YMMV depending on your experience with these levels.

The nice thing is that it can be challenging without being too frustrating without a checkpoint since the level is very short.

Such a cool design! I didn't think that last jump was do-able at first but I think the perspective of the single screen stage threw me off. Level took me probably about 7 or 8 tries. The beginning is actually the hardest.

Here are 2 level I made so far, no idea if they are good or not but I like them

Airship armada

C919-0000-0073-4A1C

A difficult level, with lots of ennemies, it might be a bit unfair in some part I think but I am not sure. There are 3 one up mushroom hidden in this level. My first try for a level (I alway dreamed to make an airship)

Ashley's manor mayhem

AFBF-0000-0092-79D3

More of a maze/ exploration level. more easy than the airship level in my opinion, can be done in less than 40 seconds. Have 2 hidden 1 up and took almost 5 hours to make.

Any opinion and criticism on my levels are appreciated, enjoy!

Had to try this out before going to bed (3 a.m. now after I finished a season of Dexter :D) and it turned out to be as amazing as it looked.

2 little notions: -
You can kinda cheat the passwort as you can see for which skulls the plants are missing when you get down the pipe / hop on any skull. Not a big thing though I guess ;)
-
I liked the "boss" idea but accidentally found a way to kinda cheat it on my second try (time ran out first time ;D) by just letting the pow-block lie in the middle, so it would block all the new Drybones and I only had to deal with a couple to the right. Maybe add another cannon to the right side? Would ofc make it harder.

Here's my commentary on the Group 3 contest levels. My girlfriend assisted me in playing through the levels and giving ratings, as someone less experienced with Mario platforming than me.

KirbYuuYuu - A bit short of a level. It reads quite well as a 1-1 style level though. However, if you take the secret path up, it drops down near the exit of a pipe secret area that you'll end up entering backwards. Either don't overlap secret areas or prevent entering them backwards.

Dad - I really like the artistic effort with the flowers and the bonus room. This might even be too easy for a 1-1 level, and apart from the visual aspect there's not a lot going on.

MaxwellGT2000 - Unfortunately just too hard for a 1-1. More powerups earlier on may have helped.

Lady Siara - I think Hammer Bros are too tricky in this game for an early level, and in a bonus room there's not much room to manuver against one. Giving a fire flower would make these encounters much easier.

Sixfortyfive - Solid 1-1 feel. I liked the plan of the hidden area but it's a bit awkward and too late in the level for the fire flower reward to really mean anything.

DumbNameD - I like the concept of a spin-jump training level, but, as far as I can remember, even the hardest secrets of SMW didn't require spinjumping off enemies, which kind of makes it definitely not 1-1, especially in the latter half which is too dangerous.

Schlomo - Yoshis pretty much always are fun, and this level does a good job introducing them. I thought the "no blocks" concept was really clever as well, and made this level stand out. The secret area is a bit awkward, as it's not really clear at first if you're intended to go over the wall (and ditch Yoshi to do do).

rockmanjoe - (Unfortunately I didn't take notes for this level, so I don't have much to say, sorry!)

Pinky - Cool concept and design, and some satisfying secrets. However, the second half spends too much time over bottomless pits with trickier jumps for a 1-1, in my view.

cyba89 - I made a note about this being a good 1-1 level except for the last jump, unfortunately I don't remember the details.

RagnarokX - Too many enemies, especially the surprise gophers, makes the level feel hectic. The bomb section is clever but is still quite dangerous on a first go.

jnWake - I really liked the concept and design of this level. Unique levels that still maintain the 1-1 feel are tricky for sure. This one does, except for some tough jumps, but nothing overly harsh.

Tapion - The wall jumping plus vines segment and bouncing off flying Koopas over pits both are well out of 1-1 territory. Even with simpler variations earlier on, it's a large step up in difficulty late in the level.

Sephzilla - Good difficulty for a 1-1 level, but a fairly basic design.

Nocturnowl - Good use of coins to guide the player, and fun to play through. Shows the importance of giving the player satisfying feedback.

Christine - There's a lot of open space with nothing going on, and then areas that seem oddly busy in comparison. Needs a bit more to build to the end.

Nezumi - Perfect in terms of 1-1 difficulty, but unfortunately not terribly memorable in design or concept.

I've had a lot of fun playing through the contest levels and seeing how other people approach the 1-1 idea. Some people managed to be really creative inside a really restrictive requirement and I'm impressed. Even where my comments are negative, almost every level got a star, so I think the quality of submission is very high, proving again that GAF is the best source of SMM levels. Looking forward to seeing how people view my level!

Fun level. It was very long though, so I'm glad I didn't die near the end. I enjoyed the secrets. Are you able to wear a helmet while in the new Mario costume? Because the first time I tried to get the helmet, it just started bouncing back and forth instead of going on my head and I died.

Hey folks, just thought I'd share a handful of my courses with you. I tend not to stray far from traditional-style Mario gameplay.

Sabotage the Mole Fleet!
7980-0000-0093-0DD0
Mario must sabotage each ship to proceed to the next, culminating in the destruction of the mother ship's engine room. This new version has one very slight change to address a small sequence break that was brought to my attention.

Fight or Flight
1F90-0000-0080-541C
This is just a good old Mario level that wouldn't be out of place in the beginning half of any given Mario game. It offers an easy path if you choose to fly with the cape, or a more combat-oriented underground route.

Pipejumps 101
0783-0000-0066-CBF1
A beginner course to teach players how to walljump skillfully. This was one of the very first things I did with this game, using only the default tools. I wanted to build a course around one idea reiterated through to the end. Players who hang on to their powerup are rewarded with access to the top of the flagpole.

Ghost Tricks
DD6B-0000-006A-F6E6
This small ghost house follows the same spirit as its kin: You must be observant to find your way through, and you must be skilled to find its secrets.

Land, Sea or Air
BE0D-0000-0090-215F
I actually got the idea for this when my girlfriend picked up some neapolitan ice cream. Three paths, each with its own challenges! The "Sea" path is only about half as long as the others, since I figure it inherently takes longer to proceed through a water area.

Suit Up
12CB-0000-008E-C7B9
Here I wanted to make an empowering course wherein Mario becomes better armed and armored as the player progresses. The path is linear, but there are three hidden 1ups to be found, each more difficult to find than the last.

The Goomba Who Sold the World
D65A-0000-0092-FE00
Not a purely musical stage like you might think, but also not a great Mario level by any stretch. This is simply my goofy attempt at parody. Inspired by both the song and the game that recently featured it. (Possible MGSV spoilers...? I guess.....? Uhh, if you absolutely don't want to risk it, just don't play it).

About the spoilers:
- From my tests, the plants didn't seem visible. But I tweaked the positioning a lot so a late adjustment may have caused this. However, hopefully no one will want to skip the first part.

I´ve played some of the Group 3 entries, here are my impressions:

Kirbyguy (B725-0000-0058-CA7B): Felt too difficult for a 1-1. Enemy placement made them difficult to engage, specially the Winged Koopas coming from above. There are many bottomless pits and the level felt too short and without guidance. There were some nice secrets.

Oh my.

That is a massive oversight on my part.... Not one I expected either.

So anyone has unlocked all the Mario costumes yet?
I already beat 100 Mario Challenge in easy and normal mode so I'm missing like 20-25 or so costumes but I swear those shit levels in Expert make me want to commit murder.

There's literally no sense of design or proper challenge. Everything is like "spam the shit out of this enemy lolololol"

I spend more time skipping that trash instead of playing the damn game.
I'm sure Nintendo was well aware people would come up with the most idiotic shit they could think of so I don't know why they designed the game like this. Ugh..

A parents perspective. There are a lot of kids playing this game. Watching my son build levels, one enemy is never enough - there has to be at least five and at least two of them need to have wings and at least one of them has to be massive, and at least two of them need to standing in a column. I try to tell him what's fun and what isn't but I guess his brain is just wired differently at the moment. Kids are about what looks cool in their eyes, not what plays well.

Yeah, you're right. I didn't consider that so I apologize. It's just that it's so frustrating.
I guess some kids may think walls of enemies are cool, fun and all that but for people who are really interested in the content locked behind them it couldn't be more annoying.

I guess I'll take a break from it. Guess I'm just jaded from all those fails lol

I see where you are coming from, cause it really is overly frustrating, I took a break from expert after dying in the 15th level, so not finishing it...countless skips and so on. But somehow Id rather play a hard level (yet not unfair "oh look you die right at the start cause you didnt move") than some of the easy levels with basically nothing inside.

Once more I would like to compare Mario Maker to Minecraft. You didnt get the Minecraft-experience you have now when it came out. It developed over time. So lets hope that people learn to design a bit better (and more fair) and Nintendo finds a way to put more variants of levels into Expert mode...

By the way, has anyone of you ever played a level made by yourself in one of those modes?

Man, I loved everything about this level. One of my favs !
I'm glad I didn't die at the end though :)
I'm gonna try your other ones.

Thanks guys!

I know the final encounter is a bit of a challenge, but it isn't quite as hard as it looks! Almost everything is timed for you to effortlessly jump over if you have quick reactions. Doesn't require crazy acrobatics.
