Amazon Kindle |OT| of eInk superiority

-The enhanced typesetting and Bookerly update is out. Bookerly is Amazon's new font. Just leave your wi-fi on or go download it on Amazon's updates page. It should be available for most Kindles running the Paperwhite OS, I'd imagine (so new basic, Voyage, and all PW's).

Thanks for the heads up. Just installed it, looks great.

Edit: It looks like this is just the font update. I didn't notice any typesetting update, no hyphenation, any of that. Well, the font is certainly a good start.

Edit 2: Well, it looks like it only works for some books, and you have to redownload them from the store. Doesn't work with sideloaded books, apparently. Oh well.

Ugh I can't decide which Kindle to purchase. I'm trying to get into reading, but I can't decide if I should just go for the regular Kindle for fear I won't use it that much, but if I do end up using it a lot I'll wish I had sprung for the Paperwhite.

Just spring for the paperwhite, I was facing the same thing and went for the paperwhite.

I usually tell people to get the Paperwhite. But if you're "trying to get into reading," I'd say don't buy a Kindle and just work on making reading a habit (or at least something you enjoy) before buying anything. Use your phone and the library first.

Please don't use your phone... That will just put you off reading.
I had a Kindle and upgraded to a Paperwhite.
Well worth it.

You can return it if you don't like it or don't use it.

The paperwhite has tons of versatility because of the light. It's the equivalent of the GBA SP because you can read in the dark with it. Game changer.

Reading on a phone isn't ideal but it's not bad. If you actually want to read and enjoy it, you'll see immediately after reading on a phone that you want to read more and will see the utility of the Paperwhite.

Paperwhite by a wide margin.

Edit: congrats! Be sure to explore the weird indie books available on the Kindle store. There is some amazing stuff on there!

So I want to finally upgrade from my old touch kindle,
what should I go with the Paperwhite or the new Voyage thing.

I have both a new Paperwhite and a Voyage. I prefer the paperwhite.

Thanks, just the kind of replay I wanted to read.

EDIT 2: Varying opinions guess I should read up to see if the price difference is worth it.

EDIT 3: Decided to go with the Paperwhite and spend the extra cash on the leather case

I vastly prefer my Voyage. I was going to stick with the paperwhite until I tried out a Voyage and then had to upgrade.

I like how much thinner and lighter it is. The better screen resolution and more even lighting, is great. I love that the whole front is flat, with no dust catching raised bezel around the screen. And I love having the force sensitive "buttons" in addition to being able to use the touch screen like on the PW.

Over the years I've had a K1, K2, K2, PW1 and the Voyage, and I have a hard time seeing what they'd add to the Voyage that would make me want to upgrade again. I don't care about color e-ink as I'd rather read color stuff (comics, magazines, newspapers etc.) on my iPad.

I've only had the Voyage for 2 weeks now but I love it too for many of the same reasons you mentioned. The flush screen makes a huge difference coming from my Kindle 4. My sister has the papwrwhite so I don't have hands on experience with it but I've seen it in action.

is there a specific day that new ebook sales go up on amazon?

Not really. There's daily deals every day, and a lot of month-long sales that usually start on the first of each month. But the real meat is usually in the unlisted sales, where you might find something on your wishlist for $2 randomly one day.

I browse the Deals board on MobileRead to keep an eye out for good deals on books. People also mention them in the What Are You Reading? threads on GAF.

I like using ereaderiq.com too. You can track when books go on sale. It lets you keep a list of books you want and you can set it up to only notify of a price drop below a certain amount. They even give you recommended values to set for each book based on the price history.

One of my favorite books is either $1 or free. Can't tell for sure.

"Deputy Billy Lafitte is not unfamiliar with the law—he just prefers to enforce it, rather than abide by it. But his rule-bending and bribe-taking have gotten him kicked off the force in Gulfport, Mississippi, and he’s been given a second chance—in the desolate, Siberian wastelands of rural Minnesota. Now Billy’s only got the local girls and local booze to keep him company.

Until one of the local girls—cute little Drew, bassist for a psychobilly band—asks Billy for help with her boyfriend. Something about the drugs Ian’s been selling, some product he may have lost, and the men who are threatening him because of it. Billy agrees to look into it, and before long he’s speeding down a snowy road, tracking a cell of terrorists, with a severed head in his truck’s cab. And that’s only the start."

awesome, thank you!!

Damn, turning down the back-light completely really helps justify why the PaperWhite was the best purchase between the two. Really liking the device so far, but I seem to be having an issue where it isn't connecting to my ASUS Router. It worked upon setup but now it gives an error whenever I try to connect to it, but it works fine for the other router in the house.

My girlfriend has an older kindle with a bad power button. She mentioned wanting a new case, so I decided to surprise her and get her a new paperwhite and case.

We're both on vacation in different parts of the country.

I picked the paperwhite up this afternoon, only to receive a text from her not 20 minutes later that she ordered a paperwhite online.

We both spent the afternoon laughing at the coincidence and timing. I took the one I bought back and kept the case.

I saw some pics on mobileread showing a jailbroken Paperwhite which had the classic reading progress bar. I want so bad! Time left in chapter is cool, but I really liked the ease of the reading progress bar (while the book is open). Too bad I already updated mine, I would have definitely given it a shot.

Broke my first gen paper white today :(. Smashed the screen.

Need a replacement do I go for voyage or newest paper white? Also is it likely a new model is out soon?

There might be a new Voyage, since the Paperwhite just got bumped up, but I haven't heard any rumors.

I'd say go for the Paperwhite unless you don't mind burning an extra $80 on a flush front, adaptive light setting and a lighter weight.

My Paperwhite 2 updated. But I prefer Caecilia over Bookerly font. Maybe I am just so used to Caecilia on my Kindle.

Anyone know why my Paperwhite is performing like crap all of a sudden?

Turned it on for the first time in a few weeks and touches take forever to register and then it eventually hangs and I have to restart. Restarting doesn't fix the issue.

What generation, Joe? Maybe a recent update isn't treating it so well. Do you have a lot of books (100+) on the device? That could be another issue. And have you kept using it? I find that sometimes it starts off slow but then after a few pages turns is back up to speed.

2nd gen maybe? It's the one before new and current gen. I have 13 books on it and no it actually gets slower and slower until it becomes totally unresponsive. Might have to give Amazon a call or chat I guess.

I've never had an ereader, thinking about a paperwhite.

But what is the deal with "special offers"? I don't understand why these come with ads. And you have to pay to get rid of them? Feels scummy, are eink displays really that expensive.

Just an option to save $30. The ads aren't in your face. Just the screensavers (that I personally never look at) and then a small ad on the bottom of the home screen.

Gets even weirder. Apparently in Canada you can only get the ad-free version? I don't understand Amazon.

In either case, I think I'm going to pick one up. The Goodreads integration kind of put me over the top, strange as that sounds.

Did you do a hard restart? Hold the button down and keep it held down, ignore the prompts on the screen, and wait for it to restart.

Might be a good place as any to ask this. but I have a Kindle Fire a bought a few years ago and have been using it the past year or so for Crunchyroll and Youtube mostly. Lately, it won't connect to the secure server wifi in my office. It just won;t load up the login screen, has anyone run into this issue before? Also, before this happened, it would not update the Crunchyroll or Youtube apps....

My 1st gen Kindle is still going strong.

Do people still miss the buttons or is the touch screen swiping actually better? I think i'd miss the buttons, though when my fiancee is trying to sleep next to me the clicking can be a little annoying..

Is it worth upgrading?

Bought a Paperwhite on the 16th, it was at my door on the 18th. Amazon temporarily dropped the price from $119.99 to $99.99, I wrote them about that this morning at 7am EST they loaded $20 onto my Amazon account at 7:30EST.

Edit: Was able to load my B&N ebooks on to my Kindle. Disappointed that I can't share my reading status with non Amazon purchased books on Goodreads.

I've never had buttons, so I wouldn't know, but you don't have to swipe, a touch is sufficient.
