Metroid Prime Federation Force can be "saved"

As a Metroid fan for decades, I think it looks like absolute shit. I don't want it cancelled or anything, but I'll never buy something like this. It's a completely inappropriate game for the series and seems to signal that Nintendo really doesn't know what they're doing with this IP now that Sakamoto and Retro aren't leading development. It doesn't have the look or atmosphere of a Metroid title at all.... It looks like the kind of cutesy thing that would be acceptable in a compilation minigame like Nintendoland, not a standalone Metroid release.

I actually like the idea a little bit. Playing as a trooper and seeing the universe through different eyes might help you understand Samus in a new light. But I really don't think you'll be able to do "Metroid" if you're not Samus. Without her powerups and abilities, 90% of the typical exploration is impossible. No morph ball, no speed booster, no space jump, no bombs.... just being a dude with a machine gun really limits what you can do.

If they had approached it more seriously, without the sports minigaming and with a visual style that actually suits the series at least a small amount, people may have liked this concept. As it is, it just isn't something that should have the Metroid name on it, even if it is a spinoff.

Well think of it this way, what if Federation Force attracts new players into the series and Nintendo use those players to increase sales of the series.

Remember the Metroid series isn't a big seller and growing the Metroid series is a good way of doing that.

Sorry guys, but looks like Nintendo fanboys will accept and love any trash that nintendo throw at them...

Pokemon is almost the same game for like 20 years...
Mario too (except Galaxy/64 which actually evolved)
Prime was a great add to the series, but Nintendo kind killed it for me with pimball and hunters...
And just look at the wii games, omg...

For them, it's all about money, and the fans are willing to pay for bad games, just to "support" nintendo.

I'm not sure anything can save it in the eyes of those that have already condemned it. At worst, a half-baked campaign (and let's be honest, that's what it would be) would only manage to sour the experience for everyone, not just current naysayers.

As usual with Nintendo, I think it's best to just release the game and see what happens. At most I would remove the Metroid franchise attachment, as it seems to be the biggest point of contention, so that those that still hate it to safely ignore it, rather than berate it for taking a "Metroid game slot" or whatever their rationale is for not seeing this as a harmless spinoff.

I mean you're wrong, but continue to live in that fantasy world anyway :)

Nintendo's always been about money, it's a corporation, not a charity. It's just managed to often release great games in its pursuit of consumers' wallets.

And Metroid Prime Pinball is fucking great. Not the best Nintendo pinball game (that would be Pokemon Pinball Ruby and Sapphire), but still a great game. If Metroid Prime Federation Force is as good of a shooter as Metroid Prime Pinball is as a pinball game, I'll probably end up enjoying it.

Did this game get canned? Nintendo has not shown it or talked about it since E3
I think after the initial bad reaction to Federation Force, they're going to keep it under wraps until they can reveal it again in a much more polished state with more exciting gameplay missions than Horde Mode or capturing snow beasts.

They're not going to cancel a Next Level Games title that's already in a playable state, especially when the 3DS really needs more releases for the next few years.

All their games scream "low budget". And I have both Wii U and 3DS.

Zelda LBW, Yoshi, Zelda Triforce, Mario Maker, Starfox, Splatoon etc... Even the 3D Mario games on 3DS and Wii U feel rushed. At least that's my feeling. Captain Toad is another example.

You might have fun with those games, but they are low budget, rushed games.

Man, "low budget" absolutely isn't the same thing as shovelware. Plus, none of these games needs a very high budget to be well done and neither was mailed in or done without passion whatsoever. They are still very high quality games, it's not like Nintendo went the full IDGAF route of THPS5.

You might not have fun with those games, but that doesn't mean they're fucking shovelware.

Honestly I thought this was a spinoff. Is it supposed to be a mainline entry? Make it 20 dollars at launch and it'll be fine. Cause seriously it looks OK, but it seems more like an extra mode in an actual entry rather than a standalone title.

It's not the same thing as a smash bros character slot being taken by a clone which is obviously what you were trying to suggest here.

It will have taken 2-3 solid years of development work from a talented studio (Luigis mansion 2 and Punch out Wii were great) who have worked on nothing else since Luigis Mansion 2. That's hardly the same argument as implying a clone is fine because it requires much less development time.

If they weren't willing to invest properly in a full metroid prime console game, and instead wanted a cheaper title on 3DS , then what should have happened is this. Nintendo should have had someone work on a 2D metroid game ala fusion/zero mission/super metroid, because we've not had one for more than a decade.

Instead we got this, which few people want, is a massive waste of talented developer, is the second mediocre title in a row for a franchise that by all means seems to be on life support at the moment. I half expect them to try baiting us with the "If the game fails, the series is probably dead!" that they have done with Chibi Robo and fire emblem.

It can become acceptable if they change the art style to something that's actually reminiscent of other Metroid games. Nintendo has enough hyper colorful franchises with cute characters.

Fun fact, the Federation Force trailer is the most hated video game trailer in YouTube history.

Wouldn't the price be better adjusted by the amount of content? We have no idea how big the game is.

I don't think so. The same can be said of Mario Tennis Ultra Smash. It's releasing in a month and we haven't hear jack of it since E3 as well... We don't even know if it's going to have online MP.

What I think about Fed. Force is that the game will have intense changes on pretty much everything since the awful reception at E3. Probably by the time they show a new trailer of Fed. Force, it will look completely different than what we saw at E3 (hopefully)

Jesus Christ... That's what happens when you reveal a spin-off that nobody asked for of a beloved franchise that it's been on hiatus for so long and after millions of requests from the fans asking for a proper Metroid game, they send us Fed. Force instead. People literally got offended with that and that's why the trailer is massively disliked. Gotta be honest: I also gave a dislike to the video :(.

That's true, but also a notable dose of overreaction.

Please.

Last console gen got two new mainline Metroid games. Zelda is more important and the Wii U still hasn't gotten it's mainline Zelda yet.

People complaining about a Metroid hiatus don't know what hiatus means.

Ehh? Zelda got a great new title in ALBW, 3 well made remakes and one competent spin off. Coming is a questionable spin off, TP HD and ofcourse Zelda U/NX. Metroids last title was bad and the upcoming title isn't what fans wan't (and very likely to be bad).
I see no reason for Zelda fans to complain.

There were two zelda games on wii as well. Plus spinoffs. Zelda is basically a biyearly franchise at worst. This is the first metroid in 5 years (probably 6 by the time it launches). And 8 (9) since the last game that fans didn't widely pan. It's not the same. You could at least have said F-zero or something if you wanted an example of a similar series on hiatus.

Zelda has also gotten two mainline Wii titles, along with multiple DS spin offs, a Wii spinoff, 3DS mainline game, two 3DS remakes, spinoff on Wii-U, and another spinoff coming out later this month. Not to mention a mainline Wii-U game coming out next year.

Metroid has only had two titles released in the past 10 years. Not counting the Re-Release of the Prime Trilogy. I'd think people are in the right to complain about Metroid not getting many games.

Edit: Whoops forgot Prime Hunters. Still though...

You know, its good to have opinions. But its better to have argument. I would be curious ti know in what way these games are the same for 20 years, except for the fact you may never have touched any of them.

As for Wii games as you say, there's some masterpieces. I dont see whats your point here except for console war. Also, Metroid being killed by Pinball is laughable at best.

As an artist, I find this games cheap fisher price art style to be unacceptable.

The Metroid Prime series has always had good art design with weird alien environments and creatures designs.

Before any of you say it's for kids, I know me and my friends loved all that creepy cool looking style much better than this badly designed mess. Even today, I know kids love games like Dead Space and Halo because it looked cool. This game just looks lame.

2/10, try again.

I really don't care about Federation Force in the slightest as of now, but so much of it comes down to how lackluster its announcement was. If they didnt put so much focus on soccer, if they made sure to say "this is a spin-off" instead of hyping it up as a return to form, and if they made sure to let everyone know that a "true" Metroid game is still in development (that's still a thing, right?). There was a lot stacked against it. Though not in the same league, think Xbox One, and how the initial impressions have remained in many people's minds. FedForce is like that on a much, much lower scale.

There's nothing that can "save" Metroid FF it is what it is, what needs to be done is go back in time and announce a Metroid Prime 4 or a Super Metroid 4 alongside Metroid FF and no-one would give a shit what Metroid FF is.

That there's a movement out there that want this game to be canceled when shit like Other M is about to be released on VC is all kinds of funny.
The Square enix fanboy shouldn't be throwing stones, not after shitfests like FFXIII trilogy exists.

Remember the Metroid series isn't a big seller and growing the Metroid series is a good way of doing that.

That sounds like a tall order and the argument is flawed. Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze did not sell well. Neither did many traditionally big Nintendo franchises on the Wii U and 3DS. That doesn't mean the series isn't capable of selling well. But Nintendo should know that they're putting themselves further and further back in the minds of a gamer who would be attracted to a new Metroid. It's not reasonable to assume that a new Metroid would attract a core gaming audience immediately. It would take several releases, focused and intelligent marketing and consistent quality to do that.

It's a spin-off. Get over yourselves.

If they had come out and said "hey this is metroid prime 4!" then yeah, tantrums abound. But here? The hate doesn't quite match up.

What? lol

If anyone knows about hiatus is Metroid fans. You should check the history of the franchise' releases.

Do you think Federation Force is going to attract many new players to the series?

The only interest the game seems to be garnering right now is from angry fanboys. I will not be surprised if it bombs.
