Yoshi's Woolly World |OT| It's So Fluffy I'm Gonna Die!

The game is legit. I hope the message from us Europeans is being heard, the game deserves a spot on any platforming fan's Wii U shelf.

Nice little game. Very beautiful art style which makes the games very special and charming. Not very difficult like a lot of budget Nintendo titles but there's some challenges if you want to 100% it.

I don't know the US price but in EU I had it for 35€ day one. Less than 40$, don't hesitate if you have the time to play it.

Regarding difficulty, I'd say that the game is very difficult at some points, unless you simplify it with Mellow Mode or Power Badges. The bonus levels are very hard, and unless you want to run through the level without basically collecting anything, the last (full) world is pretty demanding.

The difficulty is different to the Tropical Freeze difficulty. In Tropical Freeze, there are lots of sections and levels where you "just" need to time each jump in a sequence completely. In Yoshi's Woolly World, the challenge is more about planning ahead and staying out of trouble.

It's a very good platformer, and it's also quite different to Mario 3D World and Tropical Freeze. I have not yet unlocked the
Craft Island (that requires collecting all the flowers),
but I'm slowly getting there.

That's what I'm thinking as well. Very nicely summed up.

Love your avatar as well. Doesn't get much better than Totoro!

Uhm nope, it's almost €45 everywhere here in Holland.

i'm still wondering why this game had to come out all the way in October

Is it because Nintendo didn't have any games for the holiday season?

I just wish Nintendo didn't give Yoshi that annoying baby voice sound effect. I don't know if I can make it through the whole game hearing that.

The decision to delay Star Fox was made long after the decision to put Yoshi's Woolly World as a holiday release in the U.S. (The planned holiday Wii U games for the U.S. were Star Fox Zero, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Mario Tennis: Super Smash and Animal Crossing: amiibo Party, with Super Mario Maker and Splatoon as long-term marketing projects.)

NoA traditionally sells very little during the summer, and approximately 50% of the yearly sales are during the holiday season. The focus on this year's U.S. market was described by Iwata and Miyamoto at the last investors meeting. (BTW, a part of that strategy was to mainly focus on games releasing this year at E3, and only provide games that had playable demos, and no experimental demos.)

I forgot this was coming out in NA soon. I got kind of discouraged after the less than stellar opening reviews but it seems like gaf likes it. I'm a big 2d fan and just finished a Yoshi's Island play through so I'm interested. How does it compare to recent Wii U 2d games like tropical freeze, Mario Wii U or Rayman Legends?

* Since YWW is almost identical to Yoshi's Island in terms of jumping mechanics, the jumps (in normal mode) are obviously different compared to the other 3 games.
* Yoshi's Woolly World has a more flexible approach to player skill settings than the other games.
* Power Badges in YWW are very similar to the stuff you buy at Funky Kong in Tropical Freeze (but there are many more of them and they unlock gradually).
* YWW is more about exploration than the other 3 games.
* The bonus levels are quite hard, just as in the Tropical Freeze KONG levels. However, the difficulty is more about doing things right than synching a long jump sequence.
* Rayman Legends is IMO the easiest to get 100% of these four. Going for 100% on Normal Mode without Power Badges is quite difficult in YWW, but perhaps not as difficult as in NSMBU and Tropical Freeze.
* If NSMBU+Rayman Legends is 2D and Tropical Freeze is 2.5D, YWW is 2.7D.
* Bosses in YWW are something that just happens at the end of the middle+last levels on each world, it's not a main event.
* YWW's soundtrack is better than both the NSMBU and Rayman Legends OST, but it doesn't beat the Tropical Freeze OST.

I would rank the 4 games like this:
NSMBU < Rayman Legends < Yoshi's Woolly World < Tropical Freeze
(I'm a big fan of Rayman Origins+Legends BTW, I just didn't feel Legends added that much compared to Origins.)

Thanks for the summary! Why were early reviews not that positive about this game? Is it just 2d burnout?

Perhaps. There might be other reasons. If the reviewer just play through the game without trying to find any collectables, it becomes a meh game. And IIRC, Yoshi's Woolly World allows such a playing style - only the bonus levels and the hidden last level requires collectables to unlock.

Another thing some reviewers might not like is that the game actually is challenging, which goes against the cute visual style.

Any reviewer score between 7/10 and 9/10 would be valid for Yoshi's Woolly World, IMO.

2D burnout and Yoshi burnout coupled with the usual "I don't get this" regarding the philosophy of having the hard parts be getting all the collectibles instead of getting to the end. Same thing that happens to every Kirby or NSMB game too.

Well, since I couldn't find a way to get a yarn Yoshi amiibo otherwise, I ended up preordering the bundle on Amazon, so I guess I'm going to be playing this regardless of initial interest... glad to hear some positive impressions in the thread.

The Rayman Legends of 2015. I was really excited for the game months ago. I had completely forgot it existed.

Fuck you, NoA.

Nothing beats the Tropical Freeze OST.

I finished the game a long time ago but go back to it once in a while to work on 100%. There's a looot of content, but people should be aware that the gameplay is more about scavenging and exploration than platforming. The main draw is to find everything that's hidden, if you want q pure platformer there are better choices on the system.

Can't believe this is finally releasing in America tomorrow. Going to Best Buy in the morning to pick up my copy. This will be my first retail Wii U purchase since.....Splatoon.

Ridiculous.

Edit - LOL I forgot about Super Mario Maker, which I bought last month. Silly me.

Niraj

I shot people I like more for less.
My copy will be in from Amazon at some point tomorrow, looking forward to finally playing it.

Watch Da Birdie

I buy cakes for myself on my birthday it's not weird lots of people do it I bet
FINALLY!

I'm ready to fall in love with Yoshi all over again. As one of GAF's biggest defenders of Kirby's Epic Yarn, I'm hyped!

KEY didn't need defending. What happened?!

A lot of people really, really hate how easy Epic Yarn is and how you can't die.

From what I read it sounds like YWW is on the easier side but not that easy, and you can totally die now, so I expect those complaints to be less prominent this time.

Should get this next week I ordered the amiibo pack from amazon
I was wondering, do we get the pink and blue Yoshi in North America ?

Some of the bonus levels will break you.

Everyone gets everything. Yes.

Epic Yarn was very clever. Honestly most Kirby games are very clever and fun.

Woolly World can be easy if you want, but nobody here will blitz through collecting nothing and scream about how easy it is, I am sure.

You want to unlock those bonus levels, trust me.

Some people were so unfair to Epic Yarn. Like this one review I watched that complained that it was too easy and you can't die, then went on to complain that there were too many locked bonus stages. I can think of a solution that solves both of those issues.

The Yoshi reviews were even funnier.

"The controls are SO GOOD it makes the game too easy"

"Hidden items are HIDDEN, it's so HARD TO FIND THINGS"

That's why reviews for Nintendo platformers are useless unless you know the reviewer "gets" them. Very few understand that design idea behind the collectibles and don't give a shit about them in their "critical path to credits screen" rush review.

I pre-ordered this through Best Buy with standard shipping and am pleased to see that they shipped it out today via UPS next day air. I honestly didn't think I'd get it until some time next week. I'm excited to play through it!

I don't believe so. That's based on how much you spend in a year right? I don't buy much at Best Buy aside from a Wii U game or a BluRay here and there.

I am a Gamers Club member, but as far as I know that does not come with any shipping perks.

Woah just checked my email and the shipping info changed to next day air! Best Buy = Bestest Buy. Brofist for the Gamer's Club mention, it's basically a requirement if you are gonna buy games at retail.

Anywho,I can't wait to play this with the GF, I haven't played a Yoshi-centric game since Yoshi's Island.
