Super Mario Maker |OT| Miyamoto Simulator 2015

Played them and woah! The complexity of things you accomlplish is truly remarkable! Starred and followed.
Thanks a lot1 I liked your Thwomp's wood Chomp-ing facility, too.
DUDE! I just played this. You broke Mario Maker. Holy fuck! And I mean that in the best possible way. Everyone should play this level. Two checkpoints with passwords (which I did need), scripted events/cutscenes and two cleverly scripted boss battles and all sorts of other crazy exploits. It's all a bit insane and I didn't always know 100% what was going on, but damn it, it's one hell of a ride!
Thanks for the glowing review :D I really enjoyed your levels as well. Especially Hard Hat Area, the Queen Koopa one, and the Cthulhu one.

I was curious to see where a checkpoint would fit in Hard Hat Area so I took the liberty of spending a few minutes whipping this up:

kjKqrev.jpg

The best fit seemed to be above your exit pipe for the level. It's only a single checkpoint, but the level doesn't really need more.

Here it is in action:
zuVJvo1l.jpg

It is an awesome level.

And some feedback of my own for RaganarokX´s latest creation (1B6D-0000-00A3-FD76):

First of all, thanks a lot for sharing all the science behind your level. Second, I instantly downloaded this level after playing it to see how everything worked and was really surprised about the simplicity of most of the mechanics and how you got them to work perfectly, they are really a piece of art. You must have spent a lot of time polishing everything to work as you intended, awesome job.
Last, on the level itself: it really left me speechless. Cutscenes, creative bossfights (specially liked how the floor moved in parts in one of them) and things happenning that I didn´t think were possible in SMM. Someone said before that you seem to be using a better copy of SMM and I think that expresses exactly what I felt while playing the level: "That´s not possible!", "how did he do that?"...just awesome. Gameplay is great, I couldn´t stop playing until I had beaten the level and had discovered every secret. It´s true that the boss fight with the up & down moving floor was a bit chaotic, specially when Bowser Jr. starts throwing shells, but I loved the first part of that fight. Awesome use of checkpoints (I tried myself in some previous levels of mine but people didn´t seem to get the idea..btw I also used the Bonus music for the checkpoint room ;)).

Guys, try this stage, it really takes SMM to another level.
Glad you liked it! The toughest things to work out were definitely all of the pow block stuff and getting Bowser Jr to come out for the 2nd phase of the final fight without bonking himself with his own shells. I think it can still happen, but not as often as previous iterations.

I unfortunately ran afoul of the block and enemy limits in the main map; which is why the bonus area with the giant parabuzzy beetles and bob-ombs is made of pipes. The autoscrolling submap hit the enemy limit.

The final phase of the final fight definitely is a bit chaotic, but that's what I was going for. I knew it might be a bit confusing having things exploding all around while fighting Jr. so I tried to make the actual fighting space open and clean. The good thing about the shells he throws is that they usually take each other out pretty quickly. Plus he's really easy to cheese. I hope it conveyed the idea that the engine of the airship was exploding.

I would love some feedback on my latest course. As always, PM me some feedback or simple comment and I will play your courses.

requoting one last time. one day left to vote, although i'm inclined to extend the period to get more ballots in

if you're looking for something to play, please consider playing these levels and casting your vote!

It's time to vote for the best GAFfer-conceived 1-1 level! Voting rules remain the same. You have to vote for three levels, assigning three, two and one point respectively to your first, second and third pick.

Best of luck to all the finalists!

Deadline: Final ~ Monday, Oct 19 (12PM GMT+1)

Whoa, this is interesting...

On 10/14/2015, I think a Nintendo employee uploaded an "official" level of sorts.

The user is Mary O., the manual lady. The icon isn't a Mii, it's Mary O.'s face, and there's a little green medal thing with a check mark, like a "verified user" type thing. If you want to see it for yourself, the level is called My First Course with the ID 241A-0000-000D-E2B0.

The weird thing is...with an ID in the range xxxx-xxxx-000D-xxxx, that's something that would've been uploaded day one. Yet it shows it was uploaded 10/14. Very strange.

In other news, it sounds like courses are beginning to be taken down. Exact criteria unknown as expected, but the assumption is it's based on lack of traffic/stars.

But is there anything stopping you from uploading the level again?

LOL! Mary O is trolling! This level sucks!

You can't leave a comment without starring? What sort of nonsense is this wtf

If a level is shit, I should have the right to tell them its shit without rewarding them. Staying silent just leaves them to believe it's not shit.

You can do that. You have to go to their miiverse page outside of the game.

I can only speak for myself, but I use my list of starred courses as a playlist of courses that impressed me enough such that I might want to return to them later, or as a list of recommendations that I can easily pass to other people. If there were a way to assemble custom playlists (or better yet, shareable ones), I'd be a lot more generous with starring anything that plays reasonably well. But as it is, doing that would leave my favourites list too cluttered. It's not ideal, but I try to dispense more stars towards players who are still getting up and running, whereas when somebody is already on a few hundred, I might just mark the creations of theirs I like best and subscribe to their maker profile for the rest.

Understood. I simply follow people that made what i find to be outstanding courses and star courses more actively (but i need to really like the course still naturally). For one, i like spreading love, and second, it allows me to go back and check different courses of people i followed.
Plus, people update their creations so then i make sure i can always play a certain great course

So i think i am ready to share my latest creation with you all!

its called Back Track Mansion, and the name alone should give you a clue how to play/approach this level.

AACA-0000-00B1-6D91

A friend of mine described it very zelda like, where only certain items will open certain paths.

You are also invading King Boo's mansion, so he will be following you around!

I am honestly very proud of this level and i hope you guys enjoy it as well! There are also some secrets to find to help your escape! but the level is also completely beatable without any super mushroom, fire flower, or cape

So, I haven't been able to play Super Mario Maker too much lately because of real life issues. Thankfully, those are solved, so I'm gonna be playing a ton of gaf levels soon! But first, I was greeted with something like this when I logged in.

Holy shit I got all the medals o_O

As expected, the Goomba Level is the culprit. People really love that level, huh? I never would have expected it to get in the top 40 globally!

Anyways, I haven't gotten to many gaf levels yet, but I want to highlight this group of levels in particular.

My latest level is finished. It's 1-4 and concludes my first world. The previous levels are:

(1-1) Garden Garrison (B8EA-0000-004B-81DE)

BEdsHBIm.jpg

(1-2) Color-Coded Caverns (8ED7-0000-005D-D2E9)
fr1p4Lhm.jpg

(1-3) High and Dry Dock (759E-0000-0082-DAC4)

hTRI8uem.jpg

And now:

(1-4) Junior Airship Showdown (1B6D-0000-00A3-FD76)

nyxMA2vh.jpg

Wow, incredible levels, especially the airship one! I'm impressed by all the cutscenes and scripting of the airship level, it really felt like I was fighting with Bowser Jr. throughout the entire level! I loved the checkpoint system you used too: vreay creative work around. In general, these levels use Super Mario Maker's mechanics in ways I didn't even know where possible, check them out people!

Anyways, I finished a new level myself last night

WVW69ifcroI5wGwIdC

Donkey Kong JR. Returns!
EBD0-0000-00B1-708C

Gonna be honest, not sure if I'd call this my best level. I did make it difficult on purpose, almost like a "lost levels of Donkey Kong Jr.", but I'm worried people won't find several integral mechanics, like how you can switch vines by just tapping the dpad. Also, there are some sections you can cheese because I was a bit merciful with the mushrooms due to this level's difficulty. There's also a tiny bit of story at the end, but its more of a bonus than anything, its not like the Lakitu and Goomba levels were its the entire point!

Oh, and for anyone who cares: I am gonna make another story level, but it may take some time and experimentation ;D

I liked it! Once I had the timing right the double goomba was not a problem at all. I forgot that the p switch stopped the belts and thought that I had to bring the switch. That cost me way too long to figure out lol.

Thank you!
In my mind people would freak out in front of the conveyor stairs and push the P-Switch first! (I should have put a switch in the tutorial too.)

I played a few of your levels, they were a bit too difficult for my self (a bit kaizoish). I haven't seen them posted on Gaf?

Thanks to Theorymon's comment I checked RaganarokX's Bowser Jr Airship stage, and that was really impressive. It was that first time I was left just confused by how a Mario Maker was created mechanically (
especially that bit in the first Bowser Jr. battle where a cannon drops after he's defeated, opening a pathway
).

This was fun! Some of the jumps at the beginning were a little awkward and at times you have to wait a little too long for a vine to come back, but that's minor nitpicking. I liked the boss too!

Finished my very first level, Super Mario Planets - Planet 1-1
Hope you enjoy it!
lol kidding, I'm just making a final pass on the first 8 levels of World 1. I ended up changing 1-1 quite a bit.

Change logs:

- Removed the first gap
- Put the first flame-throwers higher
- Added a respawning wiggler
- Changed vastly the look of the level
- Can't lose Yoshi!
- Removed the skull rides and replaced them with blue platforms
- Removed the apple part and completely changed the ending (A little Yoshi's Island homage)

Here's the code:

This level is very cool, I already knew about the idea of using letters for the planetoids but had imagined a different thing...this is much better! It´s really good because sometimes you can´t see the whole letter you have to jump to, but you know the shape it has so you can still make the jump. Intense and fair platforming..but maybe a bit too hard. I died 3 times in a row when jumping from Y to Z so right now I hate you so much XD. I think this level needs a Fire Flower or some 2 blocks-wide platforms, because having to constantly make running jumps to width-1 platforms is too demanding and easy to screw up in the most dumb ways...that can frustrate players a lot. Listen to more people before changing anything though, as difficulty is very subjective and this is just my opinion. Anyway, you really should change the last jump, it´s the most difficult of them all by far (or maybe it´s that I´m taking in the completely wrong way, but I´ve tried 3 different things and all have failed).

Another great thing of using letters is that the player knows at any time how far the goal is. It also helps is progression, as he can challenge himself: "I died last time at M, let´s see if I can reach N this time!". I was thinking this to myself as I played lol.

One question, I think you didn´t use curved tracks not even once, why is that? I think it would benefit the looks of some letters without altering gameplay.

Conclusion: Very original idea that meshes perfectly with gameplay and very challenging but fair level. Challenging yourself to beat your own record is really fun!

Cool thanks for the review! Yeah 1-block-large platforms are a bit advanced but it's not that hard actually and the level is pretty short. And using 2 blocks screws the look at the letters! ^ ^
D'oh! Forgot about curved tracks, I used them in V2 that I will post son. Thanks for your feedback!

I really like the way you used Wigglers in this level. Can't tell you how many times I've added them to mine just to delete them later in frustration. You did a great job integrating them into the level and making it fun. I was never lost and always knew exactly what to do in order to advance.

This is probably one of my favorite ice levels I've played in SMM. I died quite a few times (and probably lowered your level's Clear Rate in the process :p), but I enjoyed the challenge. I digged the falling ice blocks and the overall design of the level; it really did feel like an ice cave (I also pretended the moles were penguins :p)

I loved the industrial sound and feel to this level, but was a bit slow working it out. Main problem I had was all that real estate at the top of the level. I was
utterly fooled into thinking it must lead somewhere. I therefore spent far too long navigating around the ghost cloud and going around in circles. Apart from the fire flower (which substituted my cape) there didn't seem to be any reward for exploring this area
- correct me if I'm wrong of course.

I did some backtracking through
the mole section
as a result thinking I'd missed something important. I then got stuck in the
fire bar room as the spring was now sitting on a solid block and therefore couldn't release the POW block.
No way to reset this so I was forced to restart. I can see other players being as stupid as me and repeating the same mistake.

This particular area was otherwise a real highlight. I must've done about ten circuits around the bar trying to figure out the puzzle while avoiding getting hit! It was exhausting and exciting at the same time.

Anyway, I eventually figured out the
P switch conveyor belt trick
and it was plain-sailing from there.

I finished my last two levels last night. Hope you like them, Mario GAF!

I'm also including a couple of "older" levels I hadn't shared here yet.

WVW69iZbaQ060Z6LoM

This is my remake of Super Mario Bros. Special level 4-3. This was made as a sort of prototype of a remake project that appears to have hit the permanent backburner, but if there's a lot of interest I suppose we could always bring it back from the dead. If you've ever wondered what it's like to play Super Mario Bros. Special, this gives you a bit of an idea. The levels aren't especially interesting in terms of layout because they hew pretty close to what was done in Super Mario Bros. and the Japanese SMB2, but they are vintage courses and they're fun enough.

I had to make a couple minor adjustments to this level: I replaced the Donkey Kong barrels with spinies, made the pulley lifts into falling lifts, altered how the subarea works to accommodate the SMM engine and squeezed the stage in a few minor places to make the level fit -- the SMBS levels are just a few blocks longer than what SMM allows. If you want to check it out, the code is 7C53-0000-0049-2B72.

ok so imgur is telling me I have no screenshots to upload
:T
btw after playing this game, the only thing that its lacking (other than checkpoints & slopes) is a kid/tutorial mode

like hear me out, I think the releasing content bit by bit is really good to avoid being overwhelmed.

However after you finish going through the content, if you invite a friend over to try it out, or have family with children over, they are gonna have a bit of trouble at first and not know all the stuff (like autoscroll, overworld/underworld pipes for example)

It would be really useful if you could set to tutorial/newcomer mode and let a friend play with tutorial hints.

I do realise everything is in the manual, and its hilarious, but expecting someone else to read all that then play is a bit of a drag. Mario maker is really great with gentle hints then leaving the player to their own devices :)

In Tactical Teamwork Thwomps Tyrant (5E8E-0000-00AF-ED89) (On my level you can get past the big thwomps by getting them to fall twice. They'll fall out of the world and don't come back.

For your levels, I love, love, loved Mariowood. I honestly think it's my favorite real world location done in Mario Maker yet and it made for a very enjoyable play. I can't believe how good the whole thing looks on the level select. Escape from Koopatraz was pretty good too, although getting through that first section was a bit frustrating. Dino Cloning Lab was excellent as well. The use of the note block sounds for ambiance was very well done.

Glacier Cocktail was good, particularly with the water dripping from the ceiling. I do think it was a bit too easy though. I also tried out Overgrown Ruins and liked it too.

This is the last time I'll be posting this, as I'm working on a new stage now. I might possibly revise this depending on feedback.

Enjoy!

Boo's Music Box!

I like the concept here, but I (like a lot of people, considering your level stats) couldn't bother with actually completing the level. I think it's too long. If there were checkpoints, it wouldn't be nearly so bad, but without, it's infuriating to lose progress to a mistimed note-block bounce or screwy spring, not to mention what happens when you go down the pipe after all that. I'd strongly consider shortening the first part in the "normal" ghost house. I understand why it's there thematically, but given how hard the rest is, it just becomes a nuisance getting to the actual meat of the level after several deaths. Also, I would have love to have gotten a fire flower at some point. As far as I saw, all of the enemies are immune to it, but it would give a second hit, whereas I can't store extra mushrooms. Of course, if the intent is for this to be extremely hard then you've hit the mark, but given the theme I feel like you'd want more people to see it through, so you need to give people a chance to mess up and still move on. You've definitely nailed a kind of twisted fun house theme with the design though, I enjoyed that.

Mario's Platforming Challenge
(75B4-0000-00AA-670A)

This is my 7th level. This one took me several weeks to build and tens of hours of playtesting to complete.
It's got lots of interesting and fun elements. It's very challenging but also very fun and rewarding!

Hope you enjoy my levels! :)

Ooof, you weren't kidding about challenge, but I like challenge, so that's a good thing. Unfortunately, I couldn't complete this level, I got to the cannon gauntlet, died partway through and decided to stop there. I may come back to it, but this level seems to have the same problem as a lot of harder levels I've played recently, which is that it is too long! If you look at modern "ultra-hard" platforming games (at least, the ones anyone cares about) they almost always have frequent checkpoints or short stages. It looks like, from the level map, there was still quite a ways to go where I quit, and honestly the level could have ended at the first pipe and be complete, because up to that point it is a definite challenge, but a satisfying one. Well, except for the fish and the bloopers. I honestly don't think they add anything to the level but a trolling quotient. The level would be plenty hard without them, and I would have suffered fewer "WTF?!" deaths without them.

I do disagree with what someone else posted about the first mushroom in the level. If you're patient with the enemies, that mushroom is easy to get, at least compared to the rest of the level. In all honesty, it stands as a good gauge for the rest of the level. If someone struggles getting that mushroom, they're probably not prepared for what is to come.

A good difficult level is one that makes the player want to keep attacking it until they beat it. Despite the parts of your level I found a bit cheap, it hit that mark for me, until the cannon gauntlet. Basically, any section like that is like an autoscroller and I hate autoscrollers, but that's just a personal thing, and a good way to frustrate me. If your level ended before that, I would have completed it and starred it, as I think it would still be a complete level.

Uploaded a new level today. It's a really short puzzle level that requires some decent mechanics. I'd love to solicit some feedback from anyone whose up to give it a try. : )
