First 40 minutes of Assassin's Creed: Syndicate

Eurogamer's Ian Higton summed up his two hour stream by saying if you think it's going to be as bad as Unity, you are wrong.

It's unfortunate that the "it's not as bad as last year, trust me" quote is kind of worn out at this point, as it's literally used every single time a new AC comes out.

I remember a lot of people hated Brotherhood's auto-fail stealth missions, but I thought they were well designed (from a level design perspective) and they actually encouraged you to do what the series originally intended - be an unseen assassin. Would be cool if you could mod the PC version to be like this.

And yes I think Unity's combat animations are on the whole hugely underrated.

I was still fine with the foliage in Black Flag, but lol, I can't deny I'd prefer it if it played like MGS :p with that seamless camouflage, seamless cover/hiding, sharp movement, diving...

Yeah it was made fun of and it was really annoying in most missions. It was only when you got put into an entirely separate area where they did handcraft the environment for a single mission.

I also hate the full sync stuff that unlocks as you progress in a mission but loved them in tombs.
Like the aqueduct you have to finish w/o getting hurt or the church you should finish w/o touching the ground.

I really hope this is better than Unity, like MUCH BETTER. The game was beautiful when it actually worked well but performance on PS4 was abysmal. The story also dragged on and the combat actually became worse.

It had some neat ideas like customization but it wasn't thought out all that well and leveling didn't seem to add much. Just the setting alone on this looks much better and the twins are a cool idea. Looks like a Guy Ritchie flick as well.

I am not really feeling this game based on the streams and trailers so far. I have played all the other games so far, but this one and Unity haven't really grabbed me at all. I remember being a little bit let down by the reveal trailers. I will definitely play it, but when I do will depend on the sort of reviews this gets.

I kinda rate each game based on both the story and gameplay as follows:

AC = S: 7, GP: 6.
AC2 = S: 9, GP: 9.
ACB = S: 9, GP: 9.
ACR = S: 7, GP: 8.
AC3 = S: 8, GP: 7.
ACBF = S: 6, GP: 9.
ACU = S: 6, GP:7.

So for the people who have managed to play this, based off of my rankings from the previous games, do you think I will be pleasantly surprised.

Compression is beyond terrible. Very hard to tell the resolution but going by the direct-feed screens posted earlier the PS4 version does not seem native 1080p to me, or their AA solutions is really blurry.
E3 was 1080p on ps4. I doubt they downgrade it considered everything seems downgraded enough from Unity

The frame rate in mad max was pretty bad in places, particularly when driving in the top half of the map (ps4 version)

Also gta5 was a last gen up-port. The ps3 version had a horrendous frame rate

So all these games run smoothly? no. MGS V does but it's not a looker and it's world is fairly barren and empty. Mad Max sure as shit doesnt run smooth on consoles and I love that game.

You must be kidding if you think Mad Max wasn't choppy.
I never played Mad Max, only read the DF analysis and remember it being smooth 30 fps? Maybe I just confused it with another game.

GTA V is also not a simple up-port, it was literally a remaster of the game. Still there is the Ubisoft game i.e Watch Dogs and it was smooth 30 fps for the most part. P.S I have played both of these games unlike Mad Max.

Batman Arkham Knight has the tendency to get choppy in the Batmobile segments (even on PC) but is smooth otherwise in the normal gameplay.

AC desperately needs to be left alone long enough for them to rebuild all their stealth and combat mechanics, something Unity was supposed to do, otherwise they're just creating mountains of assets on top of mediocre gameplay systems.

And Ubisoft needs to hire some better writers, I just don't understand how they don't seem to notice how poorly written all of their big games have been in the last few years. It's especially visible in AC but it's a company-wide problem.

Funny seeing all of the hate on Unity's perf still, I totally understand it in regards to release but the game runs pretty damn well now.

Actually got me into the series after AC2 failed to draw me in (likely my fault, put a few hours into it and couldn't stay motivated to continue playing at the time).

I'll pick up Syndicate at some point but I still have 4-5 games I'm working on/through so I'll gladly wait for a decent discount

Edit: granted I'm definitely not series fatigued on AC as I'm sure a lot of you are by now, which surely plays a large part in my outlook atm.

IGN stream is up. They're allowed to stream first 4 missions. http://www.twitch.tv/ign

They've opened by saying they're really enjoying it, much better than Unity.

IGN being able to show it off before embargo makes me think of:

"Pretty damn well"? Have they patched performance more?

I played 1.04 which I was told was the final performance improvements and it still ran like ass

Watched Gamespot's stream and eehebleh. Guess it doesn't look bad, but watching it being played I can just sense the go to this icon do some mashy, go to another icon do some other shallow thing etc-ness of it.

Well I picked the game up a week or two ago when I noticed it was 15 bucks on Amazon and I haven't run into any serious issues yet outside of civilian NPC visual issues occasionally and slight weirdness with Arno while free running now and then. Never enough to actually bother me enough to think about after the moment passes though.

Not sure what the patch number is at this point is though.

Edit: and to clarify I haven't noticed any FPS issues with the game yet, I'm 34% through the story and put over 20 hours into the game so far.

Your milage may vary. I saw a lot of people saying they couldn't tell Rainbow Six Siege Terrorhunt mode ran at 30fps (the rest of multiple runs at 60fps). I mean, it was super super super obvious and lots of people here couldn't tell.

I started playing Unity a few weeks ago on PS4 and I will offer the counter-observation, the game still runs closer to 20fps than 30. Framerate issues were obvious as soon as I was let loose on the actual open-world, after all the scripted story stuff at the beginning.

Yeah and I really can't add anything to or against that as it's not my experience with the game.

My experience more or less matches yours, and I bought Unity at launch. The only bugs and glitches I ever saw all had to do with NPCs doing odd and bizarre things. It was more amusing than annoying, though I'm not about to try to convince anyone they should be viewed as a "feature."

Bugs and glitches have been patched satisfactorily, I haven't seen anything particularly noteworthy on my playthrough. I'm talking strictly about framerate performance, which is still pretty hairy.

That's a bug, and it's rare. They're working on it.

So rare it got mentioned on almost every page of the OT after the game had been out for long enough for people to get to the affected area.

I admit I did a double take the first time an NPCs outfit magically changed before my eyes as they walked by.

I keep expecting the perf to take a shit at some point just because everyone still says so much bad stuff about it lol.

Here's hoping that doesn't happen :p
Honestly, you probably just don't have the eye to differentiate framerates between 20 fps to 30 fps. The PS4 framerate is very, very unstable and DF metrics confirm this.

So far it looks okay to me. Nothing really spectacular so far. I hope it has a better story then Unity.

Looking forward to the reviews on Thursday. I still won't get it on release though. Once I get a sale around 30 bucks.

It's also pretty subjective. One man's acceptable frame rate is another man's abysmal and unplayable frame rate.

The good news is the framerate in Syndicate on PS4 (I've seen raw captured footage) is very stable. The bad news is it looks like they got this by slashing the AI code - they don't have to worry about thousands of NPCs doing complex AI routines now, as they mostly just stand around and stare into space like robots.

There were complex AI routines in Unity?
