Sony Knows

Since this survey has gone out to a select few, maybe we should all grab the screenshot, check off the items we want ( in paint, or whatever) and then tweet it back to @Playstation.

If enough of us do it, they might really get a better sense of what the community wants.

But you'll confuse the operator running the twitter account??

I hope we can get both native PS1 & PS2 backwards compatibility AND PS1 and PS2 classics.

But, really, ALL these options should be no-brainers. Nearly all of them should have been there at launch.

If we got everything on that list, I couldn't really think of much to improve on features-wise. They'd just need to improve what's already there (the media player, for example. Get some more codecs up in that bitch! Give us better subtitle support etc.).

PS2 classics doesn't sound like backwards compatibility.

It is the same thing. If the system can play the games through emulation, then it is backward compatibility. The question is whether Sony will lock out disc support like they did with PS2 games on the PS3, or support disc and digital like they did with PS1 games on PS3. Presumably the former is a result of having a far less than perfect emulator, which would possibly be a non-issue on the PS4. The distinction is not necessarily one that would be included in such a simple survey.

Certainly, Sony may not offer any disc support and for all we know they may not support cross-buy either, but in both cases those would be specific decisions to disallow those features rather than a failure to implement them.

Huh. Maybe I'm missing something, but why would anyone want to remove a game from their library?
When you play a metric shit ton of games it helps to have the ability to remove the ones you don't want to see again while navigating through the library.

i also got the email.

i've done surveys for playstation voice before. I even won a T-shirt from them (albiet it was a girls tshirt for some reason)

There is no such thing as 'native BC' in software emulation. Which is what they would be doing regardless.

...What!? "Playstation 2 BC doesn't sound like BC"

The main thing I want is to change my PSN ID. I don't care if I need to still use my current one forevermore as a sort of master account name or something, but please let the name that everyone sees, the name I log in with etc be editable. I really want to snatch my username that I use in most other places, and my current one is annoying the hell out of me as I created it when I was going to play a part in a community and ended up not doing that, so it's just silly and redundant now.

on the Ps3 you have the option of combining a theme with your own custom background. I want to at least be able to change the color that comes with a custom theme.

It would be backwards compatible with the PS3's library of PS1/PS2 Classics. Meaning the ones that you purchased would carry over to your PS4 library.

Disturbing lack of "update our CDN to something used in the 21st century."

I don't think Sony's will ever completely match up to Microsoft's. Sony is still a Japanese appliance company from another era. Microsoft is primarily a software company. CDN is a lot of what they do anyway.

No, the games are not modified. Users have been able to get non-officially supported PS2 games running through the PS2 emulator with the current PS3 models. The emulator is very hit or miss and it makes some sense that Sony doesn't offer it as an open feature given the highly imperfect nature of it's functionality.

Exactly. The modified story came about since a lot of people were convinced the PS3 would never be able to emulate the PS2 purely in software, so when it suddenly did they decided it was probably because the games were modified somehow. Also makes for a nicer excuse as to why it doesn't support any discs at all. They weren't completely wrong originally, the emulator can't handle a lot of games that really push the hardware, but it can run many unmodified games just fine apparently.

This GIF is just the worst. It has like, 3 frames of animation and on only the left half of it. Why would you even include the right side of the GIF? Someone had to go through the effort to fucking REMOVE the animations from the right side of the gif and just leave a single frame. My whole day is ruined now.

At least they're aware of what needs improved and hopefully, sooner or later will fix it. Eventually we'll get everything working as we wished for. IT will be glorious. Then PS5 will come out and everything BETTER continue on and not start form scratch! :p

While it could be emulation on a technical level, "classics" to me sounds like select games that will be available only through PSN, regardless of whether you own them already in some other form.

If anyone at Sony is reading this, this is all too late. I sold my ps4 after the frustration of not being able to change my username, and I'm now passed the point of getting another ps4 just because I've become so upset by how long it has taken. Maybe next gen. I'll be sticking to PC gaming for a long while.

They are already called Classics on PS3 and they are just the roms from the discs. While Sony may or may not allow discs or cross-buy, the use of the word classics has nothing to do with that.

I'm aware of that, but in light of what Xbox is attempting with 360 games, and with the seemingly small, but vocal BC community, simply re-releasing the PS3 "classics" feels like it's missing the point.

Indeed. On the PS Blog it was mentioned that Sony doesn't want to cut and paste PS3 features to the PS4, but rather make newer versions that are more specifically built for the PS4. And that would fall in line with the Eurogamer report on PS1 and PS2 emulation allowing HD rendering and trophy support.

But whether or not that means they would limit the catalog to only a select few titles is unclear. It would certainly fall on the less consumer friendly side of the possibilities to make people rebuy games that they may own both physically and digitally already on PS platforms, but it is absolutely a possibility. But it would probably be the least popular way to go especially given that the Xbox is supposedly going to support over 100 titles from day one, with additional titles coming after, all with support for both disc and digital.

Conversely, Sony could also allow for some games to get feature enhancements while also opening up full emulation across the board with out region restrictions or locking out discs. I would guess that the actual result may be somehwere in between but really at this point we have no idea other than that PS2 games are coming to PS4 in some form.

Along with those options I would like to add a better Download List. It is just a giant list of of all purchases of games, themes, add-ons, DLC, avatars but without the ability to search and filter this list. I know the PSN website has a JavaScript that allows for that but that is for the online store only. I want my content easily accessible with search or more importantly filtering options.

This is now what I tweet @Toshimasa_Aoki about. (It was PNG screens before.)

I really don't think it's realistic to think that older games would receive trophy support. Assuming the games are in their purely original form and were being emulated, it would probably prove to be too difficult to implement trophy support within the emulator.

If it involved messing with the game's own code, that could create even more problems, as you'd need to get those who either made the game or were familiar with it to make changes. It would be a logistical mess, and hardly worth it IMO.

Features like recording, screenshots, livestreaming, remote play, shareplay, multitasking and the simple convenience of playing on a modern console would be enough for me.

I've posted about this before, but yes, there are -massive- risks in allowing this. Every single codebase that uses username is at risk - that includes everything from the firmware of the psp, vita, ps3, and ps4, to billing systems, customer service backends, the web store, account management...

Some of these code bases haven't been touched in years, and now you need to not only review them for dependencies, but update them, qa them, and then make the change live in a huge mission critical ecosystem with millions of users.

Anyone thinking $10 a person to change your name would be profitable for Sony is wrong. Anyone thinking it's a simple change is wrong. I don't have access to their systems/database to give a sense of how major the change is, but that it's a massive undertaking is pretty much definite - you have over a decade of legacy code that would need review/modification/qa.

Even just 'adding aliases' requires this - it's not the 'solution' that is difficult, it is the implementation.

The thing is that they'll pay for it eventually. I've seen plenty of times on how sitting on a bad code base affects things downstream, often at the most inconvenient times. Good luck making decent headway on changes, when the people who developed/supported the old code base have moved on and documentation is sparse.

Why are they even asking for a vote?
All of that shit should be standard.
Its way past time. I wanted to change my PSN name years ago.

I'm so glad shit like this doesn't bother me one bit. Don't really care for all the ancillary shit. My console does the one thing I want it to do, play games, all the other shit is just gravy.

I would give you so much money to make up for my stupid teenage ID mistakes, Sony.

So.

Much.

Fucking.

Money.

(Giant ticks for everything on that list, Sony, puh-lease.)

I don't get this. Why are people okay with paying just to change their display name?

Not to mention paying to play online, though I mostly see that one explained with Sony/MS offering servers to the developers so we have to pay for the servers, which makes me question why we still pay the same amount of money for the games as on PC (and sometimes even more)?

I do think PS4 should have updates more frequent. Xbox has major updates about ever 3 months or so.

Well, the PS3 had frequent updates pretty often, and SCE got massively criticized for it.

With Sony, it's always "blamed if you do, blamed if you don't", it seems.
