The Wii was such a good console.

Best console ever.

Wii sports and resort alone are still the best games of last gen. Not to mention the insane stuff like dkcr, brawllllll, mk7, etc.

Also wii had the midtier games on lock and it was just overall the most magical system i ever played. Nsmb wii as well, what a return to form.

The virtual console was also just a gift from the nintendo gods. I like my wiiu but it is nothing like the wii.

I was thinking about this in the shower today. The Wii, as much garbage as it had, was still an exceptional little gem of a console. It makes the Wii U's disappointments/failures all the more hard to accept. (And I think the Wii U is my favorite console this generation, so that's not a stealth jab at all...)

I'm a big fan of the Wii. Nintendo 1st party came back after the poor Gamecube showing. Not a fan of WW or Sunshine. Prime and Melee were godly, though.

We had 3 great Mario games, two good Zelda games, remastered MP series, two great Kirby games, a Rhythm Heaven game, Sin and Punishment 2, a new Punchout, a good Fire Emblem title and many more.

Nintendo was on fire with the Wii.

The VC is still incredible.

And the system had tons of B tier goodness that was just outright ignored online. Most of the gaming press was so enamored with AAA flavor of month titles that they got overshadowed.

For me, the Wii seem to have true unique 3rd party support, stuff that you didn't see in either HD Twin.

I ended up ignoring the Wii for a long time after I bought it. Picked it up on launch day, played some launch titles, then shelved it until Smash Bros. Brawl came out. From then on forward it was my Super Smash Bros. Brawl system and that was pretty much it.

Recently I got back into it though and revisited the games I ignored and missed out on. While there aren't too many huge quality titles for it that I'm interested in, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn absolutely blew me away. One of the best games I think I've ever played. Alongside Kirby's Return to Dreamland and a few other games I'm very happy that I decided to give it a second shot.

That being said, it being my only console to play new games on when I was growing up really soured me on it. I wasn't able to play the same games that a lot of my friends were playing and I ended up mostly just gaming on the PC because of it.

It was probably Nintendo's best since the SNES honestly.

Maybe better. Maybe.

Close minded "Hardcore" gamers let it down. Fuckers.

Then Nintendo stopped caring about it for no damn reason. Fuckers.

It's probably my favorite Nintendo console. I have more than 100 physical games for it and I still play it to this day. Plus, I love the Wiimote+nunchuck setup and its pointer, such a game changer.

Only Mario Galaxy 1 and No More Heroes really ever made my list of "best of the gen" for me personally so not the greatest system there was... but still had a ton of fun with friends playing games like Smash and NSMBWii...

I actually ended up playing more SNES and N64 VC + GC BC than Wii games... which I guess in some ways makes it amazing in that sense.

By no means did the Wii suck, but I won't really remember it as fondly as the others.

Formed a list of my top 25 Wii games that I intend to make a video on. Anyone think i forgot any major titles or if i've just completely screwed up the placement? I really liked World of Goo on the Wii, if only because the Wiimote was a perfect fit for it. Otherwise, I think the major omission for me is Monster Hunter Tri. I spent 250+ hours on it, one of the games of the generation for me.

I have a soft spot for niche Wii titles like Zack&Wiki or Dewy's Adventure. I still have my Dewy plush. Cant forget Kororinpa Marble Mania either.

Theres one thing ill always remember though, when they announced DK Jungle Beat was being ported to wii. The wii version is some half arsed attempt to turn jungle beat into a traditional DK platformer.

You know, I'm a great Nintendo fan, always buy Nintendo consoles as soon as I can, but Wii was a exception.

Nintendo is not that important here in Brazil, but everybody had an Wii, except for me. I didn't like the wiimote and the casual games.

But one day, two years before Wii U release, I bought a Wii to play skyward sword (not a big fan of mario ahaha just love Zelda and pokemon <3), and I realised that I was sooo wrong. The console is great and I've played so many good games in it.

I'm happy that I gave it a chance to surprise me, loved every second.

(Sorry for my bad english)

I think the most fun I had on the console was Elects/Eledees.

Throwing houses was fun as hell.

Most of those games you mentioned were sequels are remakes that had better iterations and mainline entries elsewhere and a few of them are tge worst in the series (Looking at Smash Brothers and Mario Kart). As a console it was a real struggle to get a game that wasnt just a half asses port.

Little King's Story too.

Overall it was the best Nintendo console in terms of first party releases. They had more triples and home runs then any previous console of theirs, and I've lived through them all.

It's your list, but I strongly disliked Excitebots.

I would go with House of the Dead overkill over Ghost Squad. Red Steel 2 was quite good, and Goldeneye was superb.

Oh, and Endless Ocean 2 was decent.

Best Nintendo console since the NES (and it didn't hurt that there were a ton of legacy titles available through the eShop). The motion controls were fun and never really stopped being interesting for me. The focus on gameplay and "feel" was definitely a highlight of the Wii, something that I think the other consoles missed.

Plenty of great "traditional" games, but to be honest I liked the motion control games the best.

Nice list, though why give Klanoa it's own slot (in the top 5!) but lump all VC games together at 10?

Klonoa and VC titles are prior gen games that are ports/remasters. I ask because if you're counting ports/remasters here, at least IMO the VC would be a lot higher than 10!

Klonoa is a remake.

Resident Evil 4 is a port, which they put all the way down at 19 despite being one of the best games of all time.

I don't seem to remember much, if any, new content in Wii Klonoa. Seemed to me like a textbook remaster: new controls and better graphics. That's not to take anything away from it, Id have it in my Top 25 too!

A remaster is just a port with some enhanced assets, if it runs on an entirely new engine and completely overhauls the look of the game then it's a remake.

Rhythm Heaven Fever/Beat the Beat: Rhythm Paradise
Kirby's Epic Yarn
The Last Story
Mario Strikers Charged
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Pikmin 1 & 2 (better with Wii Remote)
Super Paper Mario
Wii Sports (Resort)

I'm still baffled by just thinking that I would struggle to even find 25 games to fill a WiiU "best of" list, yet there are sooo many people that believe Wii is a piece of s**t and WiiU is like the second coming of Christ.
(I'm not s**tting on the latter either mind you, I would never do it if only for the 300+ hours I've spent on Mario Kart 8 alone, but there's just too much more variety in the lineup, and an arguably objectively innovative aura around the Wii/wiimote it's not even funny comparing the two)

To each his own of course, but still... *shrugs*

Completely agree with you. Despite a half dozen or so Wii U games that I absolutely love, it's easily my least favorite Nintendo console. Wii, on the other hand, is one of my favorite systems of all time.

Opinion and all but I would put NMH over NMH2 because only the first is a true cult classic (the sequel is more of a parody of being a sequel).
Also I strongly suggest Kororinpa (it's a very simple game that validate wiimote tilt controls, pure arcade bliss).

Shitting on every console's library most of the time just show the lack of knowledge of who talks (there are very little systems without any at least a few enjoyable games, looking at you Watara SuperVision...).
Wii library is undervalued because Nintendo big hits overshadow the rest of the games (even Nintendo smaller games like Punch Out!!) for those that just gave a casual look to Wii library.
Also Wii lack those kind of big budget releases more common on PS3 and Xbox 360 so if a guy is interested only in those he won't find anything palatable on Wii.
That said the true breath of Wii library stand with the mid tier games by Nintendo or third party.

Absolutely. :-\

Not sure about that... most of the time I see people complaining about "waggle" or the huge amount of shovelware released on the system.
The latter is probably the most baffling: because while I understand there's nothing to be happy about having to skim through an endless flow of mediocre stuff, there's still a very respectable amount of games very well worth playing.

Instead it seems like, for some people, the true value of a console lies in the following formula:

true console value = # of good games - # of shovelware games

and since the second number is a likely 100 times the first on the Wii, the result is obviously negative, i.e. console is s**t. That's utter nonsense to me.

Yeah, it was a good console. Not comparable to GameCube, but still it had plenty of mindblowing and amazing games.

The backwards compatibility makes that pretty much moot, IMO. Between the GC games you could play on it and it's own titles, it's arguably has the most well-rounded library of Nintendo games ever.

I just think it's a battle of quality vs quantity.

I can think of a top 25 Wii games much easier than a top 25 Wii U games, but a top 10 Wii U games list would shit on a top 10 Wii games list imo.

I feel like I might be in the minority on that one, though. It's why I think N64 is the greatest console of all time just off the greatness of the Zelda titles, Mario 64 and Rare games alone. There's not many of them, but the ones that are there are fucking GREAT.

Uh, it was only BC for the first couple of years. Nintendo eventually removed the BC.

I meant to respond to this topic earlier, but I knew when the Wii was coming to a close those who like niche quirky but interesting & unique titles would remember it fondly. Wii had a lot of shovelware, but between that there were legitimately great but often overlooked games, it being a lot cheaper to develop for and a bigger potential audience let more creative and different games come into existence.

In the end this is what made it a good system, a lot of B/C interesting games that otherwise would not had been made.

Wii-1.jpg

Just a small example of what the Wii had to offer.

Outside of first party, Wii was a terrible console to me. Probably the worst Nintendo home console quality-wise. It had some great games but I just didn't like the motion control stuff. You could skip it in some games but in others just didn't work for me. Even had that Wii Motion Plus thing built into my Wiimote too, just didn't work and wouldn't recognize my movements. Maybe because where I live and where my Wii was I don't know but it just ruined the experience for me.

Yeah, the Wii was definitely my favorite console last generation, but my tastes in videogames tend to lean towards the colorful and wacky, so that's most likely why.

Here's most of my Wii Collection:

Since this picture i've added Ghost Squad, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles and maybe or or two more. Bayonetta 2 photobombed.

Here's the most up to date picture but it's a bit blurry:

As you can see my Wii game stack higher than everything else, though my PS2 collection has built up quite a bit since that picture. Unfortunately all my discs are kept in a CD binder as i'm currently as University so I can't take any new pics.

I enjoyed the Wii a lot, until I got an HDTV then that's when I started playing my PS3 a lot more. There were a lot of fun games you couldn't play anywhere else, however. Me and my friends have lost days of our lives playing Boom Blox.

Fair enough.
In my opinion Wii would be the "winning" console even when taking quality into consideration, but I see where you're coming from and I guess it all comes down to personal tastes and the like.

I liked that there was almost no overlap in the library of the Wii compared to the PS3 and 360.

Lots of exclusives that you couldn't find anywhere else.

No it doesn't. You said GCN BC was removed a couple of years into Wii's life. It was actually removed five years into it. The Wii was replaced one year later.

Grunkle was the one who said that. I was the one who said the combined Wii and GC library gave the Wii Nintendo's most satisfying console library.
