Fallout 4 PC Performance Thread

How do I remove this horrible haziness or bloom-y blur in the background?

I THINK that is a result of their weird ass depth of field implementation. That is exactly what the standard DoF (non-bokeh) looks like when talking to characters.

Even loading that entire city it really shouldn't be dropping that low.

I can't say I agree or disagree because I have no inside knowledge of what the engine is doing.
I suspected it was my CPU and I still do since it increases in usage and GPU usage drops.
The only time I can really get the game to utilise my GPU fully is by rendering in 4K.

I think he means the faded out colors and whatnot you seem to get in certain areas (particularly at high altitudes)

Seriously, what the shit causes this? How do I fix it? It happens every single play session and the only solution I've found is quitting the game and restarting it.

I remember In Oblivion there was a console command that would reload an area you're in and that might fix it. Can't tell you what's causing it or what the CC is though :(

I'm so confused...
This is on a GTX 980ti.

Yup, it's pretty unbelievable. I've had it not go quite as low as this (hit 26 at the lowest) but still, I think anything under 45 or even 50 is basically unacceptable considering the processing power being thrown at a game that isn't a stunner to look at. I've tried playing with low god rays and medium shadows and still drop to the 40's while in certain areas of the city. I am hopeful it gets better fix official or community patches.

I am currently experiencing a weird audio bug. Loaded up a saved game from when I was outdoors in Concord. When I went into the sewers/under ground, whenever I fire a gun, I don't hear the audio in game unless I press the tab key to go into the Pipboy.

AS SOON AS I hit the tab key is when I hear the audio of whatever weapon was last fired. It doesn't matter how long ago it was either.

Anyone else experiencing anything similar ?

R9 280 + i5 3470 + 8gb RAM + Win 10 on Ultra (auto detect)

Haven't tested framerate with a frame counter but it looks smooth to my eyeballs no crashes and no serious glitches worst thing I've encountered was a mole rat hill being slightly off the ground after I killed it.

First thing I want to remove from this game ASAP. It looks terrible everywhere.

You wait for mod tools to be released.

Reshade im guessing. Game has, that washed out look by default smh.

Found a way. I set bDoRadialBlur=0 in Fallout4.ini and bDoDepthOfField=0 in Fallout4Prefs.ini

I'm running on a 7970 and both High and Ultra run at the same fps, it feels like. Around 40ish. The only difference I've noticed is that my computer fan runs louder/hotter on Ultra.

Depends what you prefer, blurry shittiness in the background or clear shittiness. You can also always turn up ugrids for better lod.

I really just want to remove the bad lighting/haze effect but keep the DoF in the background. It's pretty drastic in your settings, I actually prefer it but damn if that washed out haze lighting is tied to DoF then wtf?.

Did the "presetinterval," "mouseaccelleration" and "forceignoresmoothness" tweaks and finally got a mouse cursor that felt as responsive as I'd like (I guess it's dumb but I just can't play stuff with the slightest amount of lag/floatiness in the mouse), but it looks like it also unlocks the framerate and winds up causing the stuck-at-terminals glitch. Any way to get the former without causing the latter?

Man i hope they just dont rely on the community to fix this game. I know you can do alot of things, but animations, and the graphics seem like shit. After seeing how awesome the Witcher 3 was and the updates it got, I hope these guys do the same.

How do I play this in full screen?

Also how does this perform in 4k on a gtx 970?

It should automatically be fullscreen. If not uncheck the windowed mode in settings.

i don't think a 970 will manage 4k. even at 1080p the game will drop as low as 35-40fps with high or above settings. medium settings gives you maybe another 10fps. so you'll still be dropping as low as 45-50fps. not every setting has a low setting so medium is essentially the lowest you can go.

I don't really care about 60fps, 30 is fine with my but I was just wondering, I am gonna wait for the next line of Nvidia cards to upgrade from my 660.

Anyway I unchecked windows and did 16x9 aspect ratio and changed the res to 1080p but there is no way for me to run it in full screen, makes me not even want to play the damn game.

I just had my first CTD with no error message, just straight-up closed. About 40 hours in in an alleyway near the public library. Why would it do that when it's been perfectly stable before?

Disable window mode in the launcher.

It works at a solid 60 FPS at 1440p with godrays on medium and shadow distance at a custom 13000 (between high and medium). If you want to go full 4K you'll need to cut back on shadow distance or go down to 30 fps which creates RIDICULOUS input lag for me. As in, I can push the stick to the left and let go before my character even begins to respond to the input.

Can you please share you're ini settings and tweaks you did? I have Strix 980's SLI'd and I get fluctuation between 40 and 60 fps, but no where near that rock solid 60 you're showing.

I followed this guide, but I only did #8 & #9

http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1543988-a-data-vault-of-tweaks-and-fixes-for-the-pc-version/

Also I have the CPU overclocked to 4.3Ghz, but the Gpus are not overclocked and running stock. They Boost to about 1390Mhz on their own.

What are the rest of the specs of your PC?

So every time I change something in the configuration settings I click okay and it doesn't change... it goes back to the same setting and doesn't save. Anyone else have this problem?

Drive by asking, without reading the entire thread, if anybody else had lighting pop-in issues with some interiors? Particularly the first museum fight near the start of the game? I found if I moved very quickly through rooms the lighting wouldn't load until I was already there. Didn't seem like deliberate scripting, as I found if I waited a bit the lighting would load in advance. Talking about the dynamic lighting, like the spot lights. Running into a room was like someone hit the switch to turn them on.

Engine/game issue? Or something on my end?

anyone had driver crashes from the latest ones? I dont know if its nvidia related or the new windows 10 update. I guess I need to roll back

4670k slightly overclocked.

Really, really odd... I'm on an identical build and have had 0 performance issues. GTX 980ti, g-sync monitor, 4670k overclocked to 4.1, 16gb RAM, SSD. I'm using the recommended settings from Nvidia's Experience thing.

No problems or hitches whatsoever, and I'm pretty sensitive to them.

I'm actually having an opposite problem where my framerate goes above 60fps and causes bugs like getting stuck at the terminal (character just sits/stands there. I can look around just fine, but can't move or interact with anything).

Can't say I've encountered that yet and I've got about 25 hours logged.

I've been pretty happy with performance, but I've made a couple ini tweaks, have all fade distances set exactly at 50% with shadow quality on medium and god rays on low. Everything else is on / max.

Holding 60fps probably 90% of the time, and I've never seen it dip below 53.

Is anyone else having the issue when using third person camera there is this weird stutter? Where moving the the camera keeps causing these mini freezes for a split second sometimes, almost liked it is locking on to something for a split second?

It's driving me INSANE!!!! :(

It's really spoiling my enjoyment of the game. I MUCH prefer 3rd person and the fact they have made it decent this time was one reason I was really excited about this game. But I have spent most of the 10 hours I have been playing it trying to fix this issue. Searched for others online having the issue and the only other mention of it I found was this post on Reddit (with no replies) -

https://www.reddit.com/r/fo4/comments/3sivec/3rd_person_camera_studders_gets_caught_issue/

Actually, I just found out EXACTLY what it is. It actually DOES happen with mouse and keyboard controls as well.

It's an issue with the walk animation, not sure if it's the transition, the animation itself, or what, but if you use mouse and keyboard and press caps lock to walk, you can reproduce the issue. Also explains why the camera doesn't lock up using a controller if you are running.

edit: looking at it more, it seems the character pauses before changing directions while walking, which is the exact same time as the camera locks up.

UPDATE on this issue.

I am SHOCKED I have not seen more people complain about this. It breaks the combat in 3rd person when using a controller to the point of being unplayable!!

I have confirmed that KCroxtonJr is 100% correct in what causes this issue. And I do not think it can be fixed without Bethesda patching it.

Here is a video showing the bug in action.

0-10 - Shows that it does not happen with weapon put away

10-20 Showing the freeze. Note at all time the right stick is pushed so that the camera should constantly move, but whenever the left stick is pushed it freezes for a moment.

20-30 Shows how extreme it can be while playing. In this example I am HOLDING the right stick all the way to the right, it should spin constantly, however it freezes every time the left stick is moved!

35-40 Shows how it does not happen if you push the left stick all the way so your character moves fast.

I then proceed to show the same issue going the opposite direction.

The issue is also present with mouse and keyboard when CAPS is on to lock walking/slow movement.

Got the pipboy edition for my brother, who now hates my guts because he's studying for the lsats atm :p

He's running a 760m and some corei5 with 8gbs memory. Judging by the posts I'm guessing high is out of the question, but as he doesn't really care about framerate as long as it stays "not slow". What should I advise him to do? I could get more info on the cpu if needed, but I doubt that's going to be too much of a bottleneck looking at the requirements.
