HTC: There's a 'big story' regarding the Vive's launch games (TechRadar article)

I've already put 350 hours into my "launch game" for VR and that's Elite Dangerous.

I'm kinda scared how much of a sink that's going to be once I actually get one of these headsets.

The NX is actually a controller for the Vive and Zelda is the release title, produced by Kojima.

Also $450... with lighthouse and controllers

The Strider: take control of various Combine's Striders in campaign missions stretching from the 7-hour war to HL2's timeline. The Strider is cockpit-like so that will minimize mobility and sickness issues, plus it shows off VR cause your piloting a tall machine.

Too bad for Vive actually.

If 90% of your target consumers can't take advantage of one of your product stronger points you have a problem.

None of the other points are lacking though. It just also has that huge benefit of room tracking.

If I had to guess, its going to be a new portal game. "Portal VR". And it won't really be new. It will just be some portal levels designed to use VR without making the user sick.

Or its "We are proud to announce our partnership with EA as they prepare to develop new games for a great VR experience".

Why?
I'm using a CPU right now in a series which probably fewer than 5% of all Intel CPU customers use. It's still working perfectly for me though, and is a successful product.
As another example, the projector I use features a 120 Hz refresh rate. I doubt a lot of people are using that, but it doesn't make it any less appealing as a product.

Having an additional feature is not a drawback, especially if it doesn't induce any significant increase in cost.

Stars of Barathrum may live to see the light of day! Actually what happened to that? EVE Valkyrie looks pretty awesome but that's a Rift exclusive right?

Gabe shut it down. We don't know if permanently, but the person who was heading it is in the VR team (last time we saw him he was at least). And yes, Valkyrie is a Rift and PSVR game with Vive version possibly coming later.

First person shooters are horrible in VR, they will make people sick. That's why Epic's Bullet Train Oculus demo is all about standing still and shooting, and then teleporting somewhere else to stand and shoot. Anytime a VR game has a player turn when the player's actual body does not turn, that makes people sick. Some people more than others, of course, and for some people it can take a while to be affected. Note that when in a cockpit, the rule changes - a point of reference like a cockpit really helps, which is why there are going to be a lot of space sims and racing games in VR.

My point is, it would be a bad idea to introduce a VR device with a game that will make the majority of its players sick. And I'm sure Valve knows that, since their big selling point is the room-scale walking around normally.

RIGS: Mechanized Combat league is in first person, and people who have tried it, says you get an initial simulation sickness and it then subsides as your body get acclimated to the experience.

Guessing L4D3, given the leaks way back. Curious as to how they make the game compelling for both VR and regular players.

That's the type of VR Valve have been extremely critical of though.
Their stance is that if a user experiences any sickness at all, the software is doing it wrong.

That's why I don't think this - if it is anything - is anything like the direct adaptation of one of their existing properties that people are expecting.

Is HTC's Senior Manager of Product Marketing for virtual reality really going to say anything else?

No, there probably isn't anything massively exciting attached to the Vive / SteamVR release other than VIve itself and games available everywhere along with something Valve made, that I expect little of "big story" from.

If it is magically L4D3, I hope I'm right and Biometrics are afoot.

Would be totally down for seeing that pop back up, purely for the idea of it and the art that was shown. Showed a lot of potential, especially also being a new Valve IP, which would be a long time coming

It's Half Life 3 and/or Portal 3

And for those of you who haven't tried VR (and likely hate it because you haven't tried it) there will be non-VR flavors of both games. Hence "HL3 is not a VR game". Cause it's half-VR.

This move will kill any momentum Oculus has.
A 'half-VR' game is going to be the killer app for VR? Not a chance.

My guess is we're getting Team Fortress: Storymode by Telltale

What's going on with Oculus? Their lead on the market is pretty much gone at this point.

They're launching next year and have been saying that since June. This launch for HTC and the Vive is a soft rollout, with a larger focus next year. I wouldn't be surprised if it's a very limited number of units that go on sale in December.

Frankly, I still think they've got the edge thanks to Facebook's backing. It's a source of capital that dwarfs HTC, and that means they've got a quicker path into retail. They're also likely miles ahead in mainstream applications. Additionally, the Touch controllers already make the sticks used by HTC & Sony feel archaic.

I suspect the Vive will be the headset of choice for gamers, though. If Valve is serious about this and starts pressuring for exclusivity - they can corner that userbase immediately.

Probably given the slower nature of the game mixed with the VR wow factor. However I can see motion sickness being a factor with all the drops and launches.

Yeah, I was gonna say, Portal would probably be the worst games to port to VR because of all the falling through portals on the ground, changing perspective, high speed, etc.

If Valve and HTC were to release a bundle/pack next year and call it the THREE pack and it was exclusive to their platform then I think I would have to do something I said I would never do.

Build a rig and get back into PC gaming.

Source 3.

Portal 3, L4D3, Team Fortress 3 and Half Life 3.

Take my wages for the next two years Valve :)

I would put my money on a Portal more than L4D3 since fast pace FPS where things are jumping out at you can be pretty hard sell. Although I don't know how the locomotion would translate over to portal since there is a lot of bouncing and flying around.

It seems like a lot of games are leaning towards the blink/teleport method for locomotion so I am interested to see what they would do in either of those games.

However, the majority of that article is just rehashed speculation and rumors and the "big story" is just more no substance hype from HTC.

I think they said they're still working on the controllers. As I'm basically forced to go with the Vive, I hope they steal the Oculus design if they can't come up with something better themselves.

This is far more important than room-scale tracking for most people.

If they release any half-decent exclusive game and call it Half Life 3, they can have a huge lead in the market immediately, but I think decades of console war rhetoric sort of deluded people into thinking that Valve actually wants to bother.

Facebook is going to probably pour billions of dollars into VR and have a massive marketing push over the next 10 years to spur adoption of the technology. As long as Valve makes sure that Oculus can't afford to lock their headset to their proprietary store, Valve gets to make a ton of money from selling VR games on Steam. It's why they've been essentially giving out their technology to anyone who wants to spend money manufacturing it (only HTC bit so far) and been very critical of any sort of exclusivity.

- Screencap this post, I'm pretty this will happen -

When HL2 launched it made an impact on the gaming world for the fresh shooting mecanics, great graphics and interesting storytelling in 2004, 11 years later almost everything has been said and done in shooters BUT they can make HL3 to have the same impact as HL2 making the best VR FPS ever with controls adjusted to VR environment, perfect graphics and atmosphere making it a perfect boom to the gaming world and surpass the already high expectations for the game.

It won't be for launch though, but this will happen!

Personally, I'm in agreement with the Bombcast on how Half Life 3 will happen if it ever does. Valve will just up and release it. No announcement trailer for a trailer, no year long wait, no press previews, just a full on "Half Life 3 is available on Steam now with Steam VR support".

This isn't an isolated prediction. A ton of people think this is a possibility, most recently on the latest Bombcast.

A L4D game in the style of that Zombies mode in World at War. You're held up in a house and you need to stop the zombies from coming in, you'll need to rebuild windows/walls/whatever reinforcements in between waves.

I still think that the day HL3 is announced, is the day that it's released.

And I really doubt it's going to be for Vive's launch.
