Just Cause 3 Dev Diary: The Engine

Holy... that is amazing. This is a game! So much good stuff coming out recently and soon, but this is on another level.

Isn't it just a mod? I also don't understand what you think would be so fun about doing this in the game.

Looks like point of contact destruction still isn't in for many items which is sad. Also the FPS wowser.

Because this is the point of games, isn't it? One of the main points anyway. It was an unexpected result to see the planes flying like that. Even though it wasn't me playing, I could feel the joy in such a scene. The unexpected craziness of games is the best thing, why it's my number one passion.

Then you will love the hell out of this. It's all about creating your own crazy fun in a massive sandbox full of insane possibilities.

That video was incredibly non-specific about the engine and its features, save for the newer Havok technologies. "You can use the wing suit and the grappling hook at the same time!" Yeah, but you could probably do the same thing in another engine. That's a gameplay feature, not an engine feature. Why not talk about something unique that makes the engine stand out, like the dynamic LOD stuff that SE is trying to license, or the particle system or something. At least they talked a little about the AI implementation.

Yeah, I get that its just marketing, but these are also marketing: 1, 2

That stream isn't great quality, so I'm not sure how much we can use it for a performance benchmark. It's running on the same engine as Mad Max, so I'm expecting similar results.

Much better footage is all over Youtube. Apparently they don't care and are leaving it up.

I've been playing JC3 for a couple of days and I miss that minimap, I wonder why they removed it.

Wait... Did they get rid of the minimap?

If so, fucking rejoice!

Edit: Omfg I watched a stream and there's no minimap

I am so happy. Almost convinced me to buy the game on the spot.

Surely, this is a setting? Over here scratching my head if not...

I doubt the guy I was watching would bother turning it off. Didn't seem like the type. And the person who I responded to said 'I wonder why they removed it'.

The minimap has been a giant ball-and-chain for the open world genre since it became a thing. Getting rid of it is absolutely wonderful to see. GOAT open world games like Ocarina of Time, Shadow of the Colossus, and MGSV don't need it. Your mechanics should do the orienting for the player.

I love this engine. Been playing a lot of Mad Max recently and the game looks ace and performs extremely well even on a relatively weak card like a 760 gtx.

To those familiar with the series, is this game challenging at all? I know the point of it is to go crazy, but I'd like some challenging encounters, as well.

It's not optional, there's no minimap.

But man the game is hella fun, I can just fly the wingsuit all day long, it feels so good..

In JC2 I was pulling my hair out during some aircraft stunt runs. As for general gameplay, once the military rolls in with a couple choppers it's about as challenging as older GTA games at 4 or 5 police stars.

Sounds good. Thanks.

Far better. Theres plenty of footage on Youtube by various people, eg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-c4pFlWgGlw just search Just cause 3 ps4 sorted by upload date.

Ah yes, much better. See some minor slowdowns, but they are pretty infrequent. Have they done away with the health bar in 3, because it looks like automatic regen as far as I can tell.

Wait... really? Any time I spent in a non-plane vehicle in JC2 felt like a total waste since the para-sail traversal was just so much quicker.

I'd probably use it just because at some point you really need to use what's most useful and fast but if i have the choice i'd rather drive because i like driving and in these games where you can move in a lot of ways making the choice to use something that's more limited makes it more meaningful and fun. I rarely use the horse in Witcher too, if i don't need to go fast i just walk everywhere instead.

I usually don't like that sort of planing mechanics that games have sometimes anyway.

There are so many players on GAF that are hypersensitive to framerate that it's hard to gauge just how bad/good a game's framerate is before getting your hands on it. According to discussions on this site, Driveclub has both an amazing sense of speed and a garbage unplayable framerate at locked 30 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Just Cause 2 performed very well in its class last gen, especially considering visuals, draw distance, world size, traversal methods, and all the explosions. Would be disappointing to see them not reach that standard at least.

What! How???
Looks like the game's released early in quite a few places.

Physical edition.

Either that or he got a copy from the publisher.

I'm not entirely sure what this post is implying. Do you care about framerate or not? Because your first paragraph suggests you don't, but the entire existence of your post implies that you do care.

Driveclub's framerate does make the game unplayable to me, especially when there are games like it that have a higher framerate.

And if I recall correctly, Just Cause 2 ran pretty damn well, so I expect the same from Just Cause 3. I'm not sure where you got the idea that this game would look disappointing in the visuals department, or run poorly. Haven't personally heard anything bad about it yet.

One of the earlier videos there is a dev saying that they want to improve the driving, so maybe they did make it better =X

I plan on going to cars every now and then because I like the idea of nitro+jump.

I can live with a steady 30fps, of course 60 is better, but 30 is perfectly servicable, if it starts going too far south of 30, then it's an issue.

How is this performing on XB1 yo? That's the version I'm eyeing but I don't wanna play at a craptastic 20fps or some shit.

Another thing I am really looking forward to is the game comes stock with various mods to use for everyone. Pretty neat addition.

It's a shame the destruction seems to amount to little more than a gimmick.

Well, that is part of the allure of the series and and when you combine that with the crazy traversal, 4 retractable tethers to play around with and all of the vehicles it makes for one hell of a playground. They basically took the formula that people loved in JC2 and put it on steroids. Which is fine by me.

What do you even mean by this?

It opens up an entire realm of possible approaches when completing the various objectives of a mission.

I had no idea that Just Cause 2 wasn't even using Havok for its destruction last time around either. This is going to be insane.
